Report: Vikings interested in Gary Kubiak

The Vikings named Kevin Stefanski as their offensive coordinator on a permanent basis after he closed the year as the interim choice for the job, but they may not be done adding to the top of their offensive coaching staff.

NFL Media reports that the Vikings are “in play” for former Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak. Kubiak was initially expected to take a job on the Broncos staff, but those talks broke down and Kubiak is now pursuing a return to coaching with other teams.

It’s not clear what kind of title Kubiak might have in Minnesota, but it would probably involve a fair amount of work with quarterback Kirk Cousins as the team tries to get a bigger return on the investment they made in free agency last year.

Kubiak is set to interview for the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator vacancy on Tuesday.

  1. Yeah, like Kubiak is going to take some offensive assistant position and work for Zimmer when he could go to Jax and be the OC.

Where is Zygi Wilf? Why do Zimmer and Spielman still have jobs?

  2. I hate to say it, but the Vikings are looking like a circus.

Stefanski intial says no to the Vikings in hope of other interviews.
Stefanski is then hired as offensive coordinator after losing out on the Cleveland job.
And the Vikings are now interested in a former offensive coordinator type of head coach ?

    Stefanski just said….”Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat”?

  3. After the lackluster performance by Cousins against the Bears in their 2nd meeting I don’t see Minnesota other then a 2nd or 3rd place team in the NFC North.

  4. Perhaps he would be our next head coach when Zimmer’s contract expires at the end of next year. It’s time for the Vikings to move on from Zimmer, he’s stuck in the past. We need someone forward thinking. I don’t know about you guys, I’m tired of waiting, and I’m afraid I’ll die before we ever win anything. Let’s get aggressive and pick this guy up no matter the cost.

  5. The media up here in Minnesota is pretty slow, I’d still like to know if Joe Philbin is in play as the offensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings. People who don’t know any better will say he’s not a great head coach-but the Vikings are not asking him to be a head coach, Joe Philbin is an excellent position coach and would be an outstanding addition to the Minnesota Viking’s staff!

  6. Kubiak would be the perfect OC for Cousins, but he’s not going to be OC, so I’m not sure why he’d want the job. After the way they booted DiFipplio last year, hiring Kubiak will make Stefanski constantly have to look over his shoulder.

  7. Seems like damage control to get some experienced coaching in to stop the bleeding of a sub-par season that saw the team losing 4 more games than last year despite a new QB.

  8. Would be a great win/win situation for all. Kubiak does a good job as QB coach and assistant head coach which would set him up for a head coaching job in 2020. Vikings would benefit from his ability to coach QBs.

  9. P.S. EVERYBODY (fans and media alike) need to get off Kirk Cousins back. Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rogers etc could not do any better with that horrendous offensive line. The offensive line problem actually started when Zimmer named two (2) offensive line coaches with the unfortunate passing of Sporano. Never heard of two offensive line coaches-let’s find one (1).

  10. Kubiak doesnt want to deal with being a Head Coach, he just wants to run an offense. Dont see him landing in Minny. Jacksonville should do everything they can to get him.

  11. This hire would have everyone looking over their shoulder.
Actually, just interviewing him probably has the same effect.
Would love to know if Zimmer was consulted….

  12. Kunal doesn’t want (or need) to be a HC. ANYWHERE. After a TIA in Houston and another health issue with the Broncos, he knows his body can’t handle that stress. OC is the perfect role for him at this time.

  13. Vikings won’t get their monies worth on that ridiculous guaranteed QB contract. Two more years of mediocre football in that shinney dome.

Case Keenum helped lead that team to 13 wins and the conference championship game. That Oline was maybe slightly better, but still an issue as it has been a for several of the last years since Theodore’s rookie season.

Big contracts come with big expectations, Cousins CERTAINLY earned the pressure that comes along with it, and needs to take the good and the bad that go with it.

  15. Zimmer has found a place for several former head coaches. I’m sure he could find a spot for Kubiak that would be attractive for him. And yes the whole idea might be attractive to Kubiac knowing that if Zimmer leaves he would step in. I hope they get Kubiac, I don’t care where they put him. I got the impression that the biggest value Tony Sparano gave them was not as an offense of line coach but has one more person for Zimmer to kick things around with. I’m sure the Wif’s can part with enough cash to make this happen

  16. Kubiak doesn’t want the pressure of being a head coach, yet wants the prestige of an offensive coordinator, so unless he really wants to have a lower pressure year as a QB coach, I’d assume he looks for a coordinator position elsewhere. And if Zim is canned/not renewed (which I’d be surprised), I suspect Stefanski is next in line to the throne. Zim has had a lot of success with former head coaches, so it isn’t too surprising he has interviewed several this off-season — worked great with Schurmer and Sparano.

Now, you can have two offensive coordinators, to go with your two offensive line coaches. That should work out fine!!!

That could be a tough sell to get Kubiak to Minnesota given Zimmers contract situation.
    ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

WHAT?? A former head Coach on the team with a contract and an under performing Head coach with no extension…. He should jump at the bit!

  19. Time out, this is getting ridiculous. First off Zimmer is a great coach, not a good coach or one the game has passed by. The OL coach passed away before the season started, the OL had injuries again this year before the season started. Cousins started out great, but after getting his head beat in each week he naturally started to get gun-shy. Cousins is fine and so is Zimmer. If they fix the OL then all is good. If anyone is to blame its Spielman for continuing to give Zimmer an inept, talent starved OL. If he doesn’t start adding talent to the OL this year, then he needs to be the first to go.

  20. I heard they plan to suit him up and send him out there wearing Cousins’ gear.

    Couldn’t hurt.

  21. Mike Zimmer said the 2017/18 team had a finish it mentality that wasn’t here this year. My opinion correct or not is, for 9 years The Vikings ran with out a QB with a long ball, They simply overlooked the fact they traded a regular guy QB that worked hard, scrambled and had a a good mid rane ball with a few good deep hits, Now they have a one trick pony, he was just plain AFRAID in the pocket all year, you could see it in his eyes, last yearcase would scramble and take a hit for a first down, Cousins stands there pees his pants and checked down or got caught for a strip sack. Those players do not play for him. I don’t know who’s decision it has been to virtually ignore the Offensive line early in the Draft Zimm or Spielman (or Both) but both have lost this team. AND A LOT OF FANS. Zimmer is also unwilling to change his Defensive schemes for teams that have lost before and steal a few plays NOPE my way or the highway…well next year will be the highway. And take Spielman with you!
