Report: Greg Schiano likely to join Patriots staff

The Patriots are set to lose linebackers coach and de facto defensive coordinator Brian Flores to the Dolphins after the Super Bowl and that will make two years in a row that the team’s top defensive assistant has moved on for a head coaching job.

Per a report from the Senior Bowl, former NFL head coach Greg Schiano is a likely addition to the top of the defensive staff for the 2019 season. Schiano is in Mobile to talk to teams and NFL Media reports that “the spot that appears likely” is on Bill Belichick’s staff in New England.

The report cautions that nothing is done and it is the second year in a row that Schiano’s name has come up in conjunction with the Patriots, but a big difference this time is that Schiano left Ohio State specifically to pursue a return to the NFL.

While Schiano has never worked with Belichick, the Patriots coach has endorsed Schiano as a coach on more than one occasion since his son and current Patriots assistant Steve played for Schiano at Rutgers.

  1. Don’t really know what to think of this. Maybe he is a good DC, certainly didn’t look like head coach material at Tampa Bay.

It’s a pity we are losing Brian Flores, he did a good job this year with the Pats defense.

  2. It does stink that Flores is going to leave, ESPECIALLY to Miami….. I thought he was doing a MUCH BETTER JOB than Patricia & hoped he’d stick around for a few more years before jumping into the head coaching world…..MIAMI IS A DUMPSTER FIRE…. if he can turn that team around before he gets fired that would be AMAIZING!!!!
    Don’t know much about Schiano, but if B.B. thinks he’d be a good D coordanator I’m satisfied…..
    Until it all happens….
    Go Pats….GET THAT 6TH RING!!!!!!

  3. “the guy was robbed of a HC gig at Ten”.

How was he robbed? The Tennessee fans did not want him, exercised their right to express their opinion, and the administration agreed with the fans. End of story.

  4. The man must know something about defensive backs considering he coached Harmon, the McCourty twins, and Logan Ryan at Rutgers. Belichick likes and trusts Schiano and those are the people he hires. NOt sure how anyone could have a problem with this.

  5. Bill Belichick is the Defensive Coordinator of the Patriots. He just wants someone he is comfortable with to make sure it is working correctly. Obviously, Crennell,Fredo Mangini,Patricia and Flores are not idiots. They will prepare specific game plans for the D that Belichick will review and sign off on.

  6. I don’t know about him working with the defense but id like to see him working with the scouting dept for the draft and after.

  7. Good coach. Built a program that BB used to draft and win titles. Flores is crazy going in the division, too. Horrible owner and now a very rude awakening coming for years to come.

Would like the move for Patriots, however Rex would be a lot more fun

How about Rob Ryan? He’s 56, worked with Pats before, hired by Belichick as an LB coach 2000-2004 so 2 rings in a great era on defense for Pats. He left on good terms to take a DC job at Raiders. Since 2017 he’s been with Fox and more recently it’s British partner Sky Sports tv.

  9. Same old “stuff!” Recycle coaches instead of providing Young BLACK Coaches with Opportunity. Wasn’t Schiano the coach of the TB Buccaneers and instructed his players to ignore the “V”
formation, there by causing possible injuries? Go back to college and LEARN sportsmanship!

  10. “Loser, bad, stinks” are all quotes from the experts here who obviously are better evaluators of NFL coaches than Belichek.

Before there was any realistic indication of a vacancy on the Pats defensive staff.

Well except, ya know, the actual defensive coordinator leaving at the end of last season to go coach the Lions, when Schiano still went to Ohio St.

When was the last time either Ryan brother coached a successful defense? I think it Rex with the Jets in 2010.

  13. Please not Schiano. Ohio states defense sucked this year. He fails wherever he goes….The DC should be Brendan Daly the dline coach
