Anthony Barr sees endless possibilities in free agency

Anthony Barr will have a Vikings helmet on his head in Sunday’s Pro Bowl and it may be the final time that the linebacker wears that logo.

Barr is set for unrestricted free agency in March after playing out his fifth year with the Vikings and he said from Orlando this week that he’s “not sure there really is a plan” for how he’s going to approach things this offseason.

“I’ve been thinking about it,” Barr said, via ESPN.com. “It’s been a whole year, two years really, coming, so — my contract was up last year, had the option, and this year now it’s really up so the possibilities I feel like are endless and I could be anywhere. I want to be back, like I’ve said throughout the last year, but like I’ve been saying also I know my worth and I know what I’ve got to do I’ve got to do it for me.”

Barr had 55 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble in 13 games for the Vikings in 2018.

  1. Sometimes great player….but disappears too often to give him one those large contracts with a lot of guaranteed money.

Here in MN…we’re frustrated. We see brilliance and dominance…and then we wonder why his number hasn’t been called in 2 games. I think I speak for most Vikings fans when I say, we’d love to keep him….but we have to let him go for cap reasons. Too much already committed elsewhere, and too much needed to address the offensive line.

  2. Barr has been a bust as a first round pick and has not made the kind if impact a high first round pick should make. That makes him expendable, For the Vikings it makes financial sense to let him walk, But the other question becomes How do you replace the production? Someone WILL overpay for him, But it wont be the Vikings.

  3. @purplepride11 eric wilson is more then capable to replace barr at a fourth of barrs price tag. Face it zimmer only really likes to blitz smith an alexander, barr rarely come on a blitz. Letting go of waynes with be extremely stupid especially with hughes coming off a knee an rhodes regressing

  4. 55 tackles and 3 sacks? Those are ok numbers for 8 games.
So if another team gives him a big contract, they would have to believe he was being played out of position. And since the Vikings aren’t changing their scheme, as far a I know, then they would have to see the same thing.
In which case, they let him go. You can get 55/3 from a third round pick.

  5. Someone will overpay for him. He is arguably the worst player on their defense, along with Sendejo. The defense wasn’t any worse when he wasn’t on the field. Breaking Rodgers collar bone is why he is known, it’s going to make him millions. Save the money, sign Waynes.

  6. I like Anthony a lot but can’t afford him. Trade Waynes to Oakland for a high draft pick and select a good coverage linebacker with the pick, and pick an OL with #18.

  7. Nice player. Wouldn’t mind him on the PACK but Rogers is still mad at him for derailing our entire franchise.

To be fair, nobody likes a dirty player. It’s not just AR.

  8. Not too many teams interested in a guy who’s too slow to arrive at a play on time, and compensates by hitting late. No place for a guy like that, not anymore. I mean, he created the need for a major rule change all by himself, after all. Who needs that?

  9. He’s not a leader or has the heart to grind in games when he’s needed. He has all the size and speed to be great and dominate but has only shown flashes of it. Someone will pay him but probably not the Vikings. Pay Waynes, he deserves it.

  10. Barr’s wisdom is going to pay off huge. He knows exactly what he’s doing, and he’s following a well thought out plan. It’s the same plan he’s been following since college. He’s a regular at the pro bowl, and we’ve never heard anything bad from his corner of the world. He’s not the best player in the NFL, but he’s among them. He’ll get paid, and his plan should be the one every player follows.

  11. Barr is going to get paid more than he’s worth, and while I’d like to see him stay with the Vikings, they shouldn’t overpay to keep him. There were too many games in 2018 where Barr was not a factor to justify a long term contract at $12 million per year (his 2018 salary).

I expect either Rhodes or Waynes to be traded as well, and hopefully with that pick or their own first or second round pick, they can nab a replacement for Barr, and build a better OL while they’re at it.

  12. Granted it’s just one game but after watching the Rams game, he’s hardly worth the money. As an edge rusher, he’s OK, not big money worth, just OK. Covering players out of the backfield, he’s terrible. He got away with that a lot in Minnesota because the rest of the defense could make up for his shortfalls but if he signs a big contract and they look forward to him carrying a defense, good luck with that.

  13. Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

I somewhat joke because I don’t think Zimmer plays him to his strengths as much as he could. If he winds up on a 3-4 team or somewhere he gets to rush the passer more, he’ll probably be a double digit sack guy and more widely regarded as a dominate linebacker.

But, I don’t think he’s worth that price tag given what he’s asked to do for the Vikings.

  14. Covering players out of the backfield, he’s terrible. He got away with that a lot in Minnesota because the rest of the defense could make up for his shortfalls.

    ——

Please tell us what linebackers can cover wide receivers one on one from the slot?

If Barr goes to a 3-4 team or where he’s allowed to rush the passer a bit more, he’ll be worth the money and a double digit sack guy.

  15. I like Barr but the guy disappears on the field way too often to pay him like a top LB. Hopefully the Vikes work something out but they can’t overpay with their offensive line needs.

  16. Never really understood why we drafted him in the first place, considering his size and skill set are much better suited for a 3-4 outside linebacker than a 4-3.

Everything that’s been said is true. Flashes potential, disappears way too often. No idea how this guy keeps making the pro bowl because he’s not THAT good.

Personally, I’d hate to lose him for nothing though, I think they should franchise him and trade him for a 3rd rounder or something.

  17. It’s sad that a good player is hitting free agency but fans are conditioned to knock his salary down so he fits on their team. Imagine NBA players dealing with this.

  18. The Vikings D is the sum of all the parts. When Barr is allowed to come free via the scheme his speed for his size shows in a straight line burst thus highlight film material. More suited for a outside 3-4 D. His problems are he can’t shed blocks, average coverage skills and the well documented, playing when he wants to. $10-$12 Mill a year, don’t see the value for the Vikes, but hate to see him go. 2020 3rd Compensatory pick booked.

  19. He is 1/2 the reason our run D is so bad! Plus he is out of position as much as in. He gets hurt EVERY freeking year. BYE.. another Spielman 1st round misses

  20. I wish him luck wherever he ends up. I am not sure if he underperformed at times, or if he was just misused. It can be difficult for fans to know how well defenders are doing, as we do not know the responsibilities they are given on any given play.

  21. He’d be a good fit for the Rams IF they can afford him. If they have Barr on one side & Fowler on the other could turn 2 first disappointments into semi-studs.

  22. AZ Cardinals should let Marcus Golden (who is good) walk and instead sign Barr (who is better) and more suited to the 3-4 they will be running. They have the cap space for several big free agent signings this year. Chandler Jones on one side, Barr on the other, and a draft pick of Q Williams in the middle in a 3-4 would upgrade their defense immediately.

They were a very good defense for years before Wilks tried to switch them to a 4-3 without any shift in defensive talent. With guys like Buddha Baker, Patrick Peterson and Swearinger in the backfield, Barr and Williams in a 3-4 would make them great again. All those guys would be under 30 and defense would be set for a long time.

  23. His only claim to fame is intentionally injuring Rodgers a couple years ago. Other than that, he is an average player.

  24. No heart, no drive or passion for the game. Disappears for large portions of every game and can’t stay on the field.

Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out. Still ticks me off we took him over Aaron Donald.

  25. He’s good, not great. Tends to disappear from one play to the next. Eric Wilson and others can replace him without much loss of output, if any. Good luck to him.

  26. Vikes should make him a Defensive End like they did years ago with Chris Doleman, who was a LB his first few years in NFL

Yeah that’s what all you packer fans were saying after that hit…’thanks, anthony barr! you did us a favor!!!!’ yeah, it’s not like your entire fanbase didn’t send him death threats or anything like that.

and i’d hate to break it to you but the packers era of winning is over, and it started this past season when even having Rodgers resulted in a very poor season. i thought he was so great that he could overcome anything, even a coach you all blame for everything? it’s simply the pendulum swinging the other way. you had your moment in the sun for a long time and now it’s darkness awaiting for multiple decades. no team has been luckier than the packers since 1991. first the broncos era went down starting last year, now you and the steelers are in the process of going back to last place in the division for a long long time. Once brady and BB are gone, the patriots will be the last domino to fall. those 4 teams had a nice 30 year run, but it’s simple physics: what goes up must come down.

And to think, the Vikings could have taken Aaron Donald with that pick….

    ________________

Nope! not letting this nonsense stand! the vikings had drafted Sharrif Flloyd the previous first round, and had just signed linval joseph to a lucrative free agent deal. both DTs. They didn’t need another DT that draft, they needed a linebacker more than any position. Joseph has been great and Flloyd looked like a great player until he had a career ending knee injury/surgery gone wrong. horrible luck if you ask me.

  30. New England, Seattle, Kansas City or Green Bay.
maybe Minnesota, for all the ‘plays’ he’s out of position or pulls up lame on he also is a central piece of what Zimmer does on defense. An upgrade though next to Kendricks could be nice though depending on free agency.

And yea, signing Keenum 2yr 38mil. couldve made it easier to keep Barr or Waynes instead of Captian Paranoid. hey kirk, frankie says rellllaxxxx.

  31. A year ago fans of the lavender were saying Waynes was a disappointment. Now they say they have to pass on Barr (although not like the Rams did, haha!) so they can pay Waynes. Truth is they’re both pretty much average.

  32. so glad that vikings didnt sign him because he was lazy. we all know he can play at high level but he didnt do much on the field like he did when he was a rookie.

  33. As a vikings fan, i still think this team is going to ask Griffen to restructure, big time. He’s not worth that contract anymore-he’s getting older and is now literally unstable. that is an automatic restructure or you release him. that frees up a lot of cap space to sign richardson or barr.

Remmers: restructure, or release if he doesn’t.

Reiff: restructure and put at RT, not LT.

    Sandejo: release.

Barr: I doubt they bring him back when he probably will want $15 million a year or more. I don’t think he would be much of an improvement over a linebacker like eric wilson or some new guy that zimmer can mold. adding a 3rd safety also seemed like a good approach for covering tight ends and running backs-something barr is not good at.
Richardson: tag him if the cap space is there. the vikings need OL in the draft more than linebacker and DT, so it would make more sense to just sign richardson and wait until next year to let him go and draft another DT to play with Jaleel Johnson (their future DT when Joseph retires).

Don’t mess with the cornerbacks this year. Waynes is good, i don’t care what other vikings fans say. he’s gone next year (that’s why they drafted hughes) Rhodes is still good but he is always injured. Hughes won’t be 100% next year. Alexander is turning out great and could come rather cheap if they sign him to a deal next year. Holton Hill is one of the biggest steals in recent memory on defense and is now Rhodes replacement in 2 years. cornerback is a position you want too many because they always get hurt. 5 cornerbacks capable of starting is a true luxury in the nfl.

Cap hell can squeeze and ruin teams. Cousins @ 28 mil.
    ===========================================================================
That’s not an example of cap hell. That’s just a bad personnel decision. There’s always risk in free agent signings. There are very few, if any teams, in “cap hell”. There are plenty of teams that make bad personnel decisions. If teams are near the cap and have spent money wisely, they’ll be fine.

Dude crying about Bar’s legal hit is old news. The new thing is crying about Rodgers injuries from this year, try to keep up man. Also where is the outrage for that scrub wide receivers St. Brown’s dirty hit that he was penalized on??

  36. Right call by Vikings. Barr is not a huge $$ player.

They signed Diggs, good call. Diggs is the kind of receiver most teams wish they could find. They signed Hunter, good call. Hunter is a gamechanger and young, and he is still getting better!

Barr? A nice LB, but you need to pay him a decent wage without breaking the bank. The difference between Barr and his backup is not enough to justify having cap problems.

    =================================================================================================
How much do the Vikings pay him? And what is it specifically that makes him the best at what he does in relation to all of the other cap guys in the league? I ‘m sure that there are many teams that employ cap guys just as good, and maybe better, than Brzezinski. I hear Vikings’ fans talk about how great he is, without really being able to specify what makes him great and so much better than others.

  45. He is not a bust but has been more projection than production in his career. He is tall and fast but not a real difference maker, and no one really knows if he’s just a 4-3 backer or can he play on the edge? He will be overpaid just because he’s out there and teams have money. The kind of guy who’s better in Madden than real life.

  46. Funny how Viking fans are now saying he’s overrated…..compared to who? Harrison Smith….if I were a Viking fan I would take him over Smith & Kendricks. He will definitely be making $12M per year as he’s worth it. Zimmer isn’t the coach he once(see OFFENSE and his defense getting burned non-stop by bad teams) and they might want to reconsider signing him. Pressure is building in MN.

Judging cap money in January is a foolish excerise. Teams restructure and make necessary cuts and the January number is meaningless. Teams with little to no talent typically have the most cap money this time of year, see the Oakland Raiders or teams with the stars and scrubs approach, see Green Bay. We’ve already seen the “team to beat in the NFC North” mantra in other threads which holds as much water as bragging about cap space, we heard it all last year and this year how GB was going to be back. Well I guess gb fans were right they finished back in third place again.

  48. Zim has been misusing him for years. He needs to blitz him a LOT more. If he goes to a team that runs a 3-4 he’ll get 12 sacks next year….Zim has a LOT to prove next year imo……

  49. I think Zim has misused Barr. He had him covering guys on 3rd down when he should have had him rushing the passer. With the drop in production from Everson, I would put him in as a pass rusher at EG spot.Everson might have to renegotiate his contract to get Barr back. But it would be worth it.

Also, a quick review of my post and you will see that I already stated the Vikings will have to juggle and slash some contracts which is basically the same thing as restructuring and making necessary cuts.
It’s almost like there’s an echo in here.

Meanwhile, Green Bay, who finished one or two games behind the Vikings, (Depending on how unbiased you viewed week 2) are hovering around 40,000,000 under the cap.
Ranked about the midpoint in available cap space. January numbers. 😉
Now none of this means anything if they don’t allocate it correctly, but it’s obvious that Minnesota has squandered most of theirs the last several years.

  56. He needs to be in a 3-4 scheme attacking the passer. I feel the Vikings haven’t used him properly. If he gets in the right system, he’ll put up big sack/pressure numbers.

  57. I don’t get it I was told he is a pro bowler cuz of his great coverage skills so his numbers aren’t there. Now that the season is done, its “he disappears”
