Aaron Donald repeats as defensive player of the year

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald joined some elite company Saturday night. He became only the third player in NFL history to repeat as defensive player of the year.

Former Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor won back-to-back awards in 1981-82, and Texans defensive end J.J. Watt won the award in 2014-15.

Donald won last year after making 11 sacks in 14 games and was rewarded with a $135 million extension in the offseason. He was even better this season with 20.5 sacks in 16 games, the most by an interior lineman in NFL history.

“Anytime you’re rewarded for the success you have, you’re going to be happy because you put the body of work in,” Donald said earlier this week, via the Los Angeles Times. “A lot of hard work. A lot of training. A lot of things you do behind the scenes.

“And to see you get rewarded, you know, you’d be happy for that.”

Donald beat out Bears linebacker Khalil Mack, getting 45 of the 50 votes. Mack, who made 47 tackles, 12.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, four pass breakups, 10 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries after the Raiders traded him to Chicago, received the other five votes.

Mack won the award in 2016.

  1. It’s refreshing to see a player that get paid and then feel he have to put in the work even more to show he have to continue to earn the contract that was giving to him.

  2. As a Bears fan, I love Mack, but Donald is the right choice. Mack missing some games (and being gimped in 2 others) hurt his chances. What Donald is doing from an interior position as a pass rush is ridiculous.

  3. Donald also lead the league with 25 tackles for loss and he had 41 QB hits to go along with his 20.5 sacks. So on a ridiculous 41 plays this year Donald was responsible for the opponnent’s offense getting negative yards. Amazing.

  4. Aaron Donald knows what a yinzer is. He also knows 412…bc hes a Pittsburgh boy..tough hard nosed ball player. Pittsburgh is the reason for some of the best individual players the NFL has ever seen. From Montana, Marino, curtis martin, revis, ty law. Johnny U….not to mention 6 time superbowl winning steelers…

I’m just thrilled we have a totally legitimate super bowl.

    ______________

A lot of people who have sympathy with the Saints after the NFCCG might well think otherwise if some of their fans continue like this.

    No bounties either. Good stuff.

  7. They’re we’re bounties before? Tell us about tagliabue and what he did.

Super fake bowl. True sports fans agree.

  8. Boisestatewhodat….Your squad is watching and the Rams squad is playing tomorrow..Deal with it and move on….Or else get behind a team that can finish the deal…

  9. There are some obnoxious fan bases, but holy cow the Saints fans on this board are so whiney. This is an article on AD and his accomplishment. Go find a support group or something…hopefully they have one in Idaho

  10. Atlantic City refunded bets.

    Vinovich heckled in UTAH.

What’s that tell you about public perception?

  11. AD is a one man wrecking ball as was Lt…AD is so unique cause he gets his from the interior as apposed from the edge ..Thus in my opinion makes him more disruptive then LT was..

  12. Really,Vinovich getting heckled at a basketball game makes you feel good…on a play he wasnt even involved with…that says alot about your issues…MOVE ON

  13. 4 refs from LA. 2 involved in the most egregious officiating blunder in sports history.

Glad we’ve got an above board super bowl here. At least the Rams don’t have a fan base to be concerned about.

    Super fake.

  14. What makes me feel better is that anyone who watched the game knows the saints were robbed. I mean…it’s kind of been the story, right? The story hasn’t been the fake super bowl.

    28-3

  15. “What’s that tell you about public perception?”

Should be worried about how your fan base is being perceived. Seems they’ve forgotten the officiating blunders in their favor week 16 against the Steelers.

  16. I promise you Arthur blank and Atlanta are feeling it now. Here they are…first super bowl and all and no one is there… comparatively speaking.

  17. Viewership ratings will tell the tale. Enjoy the illegitimate super bowl. Feel bad for the Rams…they don’t have fans so I won’t say I feel bad for them. Even Colman robey or whatever his name is…hear begging for forgiveness now. He admittedly got beat and intentionally knocked Lewis out. An intentional no call. Sad state of affairs. NFL is a disgrace.

  18. Boisestatedat…can you honestly say that the officials didn’t miss ANY calls against your squad…The missed call that drives you only has more significance than the other missed calls on both sides cause it happened when it did..?

For a start complaining about the refs after the 2009 NFCCG is outrageous, some of the hits not called against Favre were so late they were almost in the locker room. But going back to the last game if the correct call is made for the facemask on Goff that changes everything that happens afterwards. There is no way you can say the Saints even get into the same position to have the bad call called against them. Apart from that blowing a 13-0 lead in a stadium where fans thought blowing whistles was completely OK, not having the defense show up when it really mattered and finally throwing a TD after winning the toss in OT had nothing to do with the final outcome.

I just hope we don’t have another 2 full years of whining by Saints fans ruining every single thread as Patriots fans did after Deflategate.

  21. Just as I thought Boise can’t or won’t answer the question honestly cause he knows deep down inside that his squad couldn’t finish the deal at home…Stop the rams late in the fourth or when they win the toss in ot drive down and score…but they could not do either…soooooo they go to the ole blame the refs deal…

  22. Great interior lineman. He’s not better than Man Dog Fletcher Cox. Dude played injured during the Rams game- and out performed him.

  23. What Donald did all that in 15 games this season is amazing considering he got completely shutdown by Lane Johnson and the Eagles in Week 15.

  24. How he do against the run? Did he often sell out and leave lanes open?”

You know that was him throwing Ingram for a six yard loss in the NFC Championship Game. Brees threw the game sealing INT right after that.

  25. Aw gee, and I thought it would be Richard Sherman. Oh — my mistake. Sherman wins the award for offering the most opinions on everything. My bad.
Congrats to Aaron Donald. He is the best defensive player in the game.
