Bill Belichick credits Josh McDaniels for making right adjustment

The Patriots had only three points and 195 yards in the first half. They had 212 yards and 10 points in the second half.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick credited offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for a second-half adjustment that finally got New England into the end zone.

“McDaniels made a great adjustment,” Belichick said. “We talked about that on the sideline. We went to a two tight end offense, but we spread them out. We were able to complete some passes to Julian [Edelman] and then to Rob [Gronkowski] at the goal line to score [on the next play]. It was really well executed. It was not something we had anticipated doing a lot in this game. We did it against Kansas City, but it was kind of right time, right situation. We had good protection to be able to make those throws. Tom [Brady] did a good job getting the ball to the open guy. That was a great throw he made to Gronkowski to get down to the 2-yard line.

“Josh McDaniels did an outstanding job of play calling and eventually finding things that worked and made some big drives for us.”

  1. “That was a great throw he made to Gronkowski to get down to the 2-yard line.”

That was a beautiful throw – Brady straight up dropped that gem perfectly like dropping a peach into a basket, but from 35 yards away.

  2. “We talked about it on the sideline” to me sounds like Bill told McDaniels what formation change to make and to play out of and then McDaniels called the play and Brady executed.

McDaniels won’t last 3 seasons as a head coach in NE when Bill retires or anywhere else for that matter.

  3. KC and the Saints deserved to be in the Super Bowl, not the Rams and Pats.

It’s the first SB in over 40 years I didn’t bother to watch. Heard it was rather boring though. The irony.

  4. Had they kept the power run game going with Michel it wouldn’t have been so close. The Pats got way too pass happy early in the game.

  5. Yes Josh McDaniels deserves credit for the adjustments that he made.

But does anyone else notice how Belichick failed to mention the name of Brian Flores who did a brilliant job of calling the plays on a Patriots Defense that held the Rams to just 3 points? I guess that’s because Flores is leaving to be the HC of the Miami Dolphins

It is a shame that you also apparently refused to watch the AFC Championship game between the Pats and Chiefs because that was a classic and, if you had watched, you would know that the Pats deserved to be in the Super Bowl, and deserve to be the Super Bowl champions for the sixth time in their history.

  7. See what happens when the refs call a clean NE game? Booooring.
Glad Suh didn’t get a ring, and NE gets another * for their path to the game.

  8. If you think KC deserved tp be in the game then you didn’t pay attention, calls were in KS’s favor aside from one.

  9. People do not like the Pat’s and a lot want them to loose. But give them credit. I think NO should have been in SB. As far as KC, teach Dee Ford how to line up outside of the neutral zone. Bad play and bad coaching.
Next year the Chiefs will end it for Pat’s. Need defense help for sure.

Buddy, Belichick is responsible for the schemes and has taught every defensive play caller the Pats have had. All calls have to go through him and deservedly so.

  11. Great post, nfella- “…peach in a basket…”

That pass (and the previous one to Gronk on the other sideline for that matter) was absolutely a big-time, clutch pass, beautifully thrown.

  12. Belichick (THE REAL GOAT) credits everyone but himself. If you like and respect the guy that scores and simply hands the ball over to the ref…then Belichick is your guy. Congrats Coach.

  13. “I still can’t believe it took McDaniels 2 weeks to come up with that first half script… yikes”

Must be new to football – the Rams have a great defense and the Patriots did move the ball in the first half.
