Super Bowl rating hits a 10-year low

Yes, more people watch exciting football games. And, yes, fewer people watch boring ones.

That rule was proven yet again on Sunday night, when the Rams — 11 weeks after a Week 11 54-point explosion — were limited to a field goal as part of the lowest-scoring Super Bowl of all time. According to Dominic Patten of Deadline.com, the nationwide overnight rating of 44.9 becomes the lowest since Super Bowl XLIII, between the Steelers and Cardinals.

It’s also a 5.2-percent ratings decline from last year’s game between the Patriots and Eagles in Minneapolis.

The five highest-rated Super Bowls, per Deadline.com, were Super Bowl XLIX (49.7), Super Bowl 50(49.0), Super Bowl LI (48.8), Super Bowl XLVII (48.1), and Super Bowl XLV (47.9).

The poor performance of the Super Bowl comes at the end of a season that featured increased ratings due to increased scoring and generally exciting games. The league will be hoping that the trend continues in 2019, and that unlike this year it lasts through the title game.

  1. Super Bowl LIII earned a 26.1 rating in New Orleans, the lowest of of any market and the lowest ever in New Orleans.

  2. Perhaps when you have a team that doesn’t deserve to be there… Boring game aside – when belief in the product is shattered, interest wanes.

  3. i thoroughly enjoyed it, watched every minute of it and then all the post game i could until 1AM. Wanted to make sure i had fun and made Lane Johnson proud.

  4. I think fans are sick of seeing the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Combined with fact that The Saints got hosed out of their opportunity to play in the big game. The league got what they wanted. Another NE win. And ratings for a fledgling LA franchise. A NO/KC Super Bowl would have been WAY more entertaining. I am starting to believe what my father always said. That the NFL is fixed.

  5. the commercials got to step up someone tell the ad agencies just putting a movie star in the commercial don’t make it good. Free advice from Mr Average Fan here.

  6. Here’s a thought that might improve the Super Bowl ratings. Find another AFC team to play in it besides the Patriots.

  7. Why would any one want to watch the same old team play and another team that shouldn’t have been there. CBS wanted these two teams to play so they got what they wanted. By hook or crook. so they can live with the reduced view.

  8. I liked the game; I also watch paint dry.

Seriously, I like to watch defense played at its highest level and this game provided it. The problem for me is that defense is outlawed early in the NFL season with penalty calls. After December 15th, refs swallow their whistles and let ’em play — defenses all of a sudden become potent.

I’d rather they let defenses play the whole season.

  9. This proves the NFL is right. For all the complaining of the offensive biased rules this year and that no one plays defense anymore, people HATE defensive dominate games. Since the majority consider this a boring game, the ratings consider this a boring game, the more the league can do to get the scores up, not down, is the only way to get more people to watch.

  10. It was a good defensive battle but this sucks because now the NFL is going to make up more rules to benefit the offense. They can’t have “boring” games and poor ratings.

  11. I didn’t watch, we went to the movies. I am a 55 year old lifelong football player and fan. I have been to a Superbowl and never missed one on TV. I am NOT a Saints fan. But what should have been the end of that game was a farce. It rendered the Superbowl illegitimate. I don’t expect Pats or Rams fans to feel that way, but it was complete arbitrary BS that one team can go to the Superbowl that shouldn’t have and the other can’t. It ruined the credibility whole season. LIII*

And spare me the “there were other plays”, etc. They call them game winning shots, game winning plays, walk off homer, play of the game, etc for a reason. The game was on the line. The NFL just jumped the shark.

  12. Chiefs vs Patriots was the real Super Bowl. After you beat the Chiefs in KC, you just finish the job. Sometimes the biggest test, even for the champion comes earlier on.

  13. I wasn’t rooting for either team, but quite honestly I found last night’s defensive-oriented game refreshing. I’m old enough to remember when those types of games were commonplace (especially in the playoffs) in the days before the rules changes that were designed to artificially inflate scoring and passing stats.

  14. Why would anyone think the game was fixed? Was it the 3:1 ratio of flags for the Patriots? The 3:1 ratio of penalty yardage for the Patriots? Was it how the refs refused to call Pass Interference against the Patriots for the umpteenth time in the playoffs? It couldn’t have been the way that every time the Rams got something going, there was a flag to negate it. I just don’t understand why anyone would feel that way…

  15. People are crazy if they think the games are fixed by the NFL, Vegas maybe, but not the NFL. You can be sure there’s one person who wants to see the Patriots lose more than YOU… that’s Roger. And if you don’t know that, you have not been paying attention.

  16. I didn’t watch because a) I hate the Patriots and had no real rooting interest; and b) sick and tired of the politicization of the game. It’s a football game – leave the politics out of it and let the fans enjoy it.

  17. professional sports is going to suffer. Today’s generation can’t even go out to dinner without texting each other from across the table. Ratings are screwed 25 years down the road. It’s over

  18. Doesn’t matter what the ratings are…the Integrity of the league is intact!!!
    – Roger Goodell and Refs

  19. Maybe of some of the other owners actually hired competent coaches some of the lesser teams might actually become competitive. In fact, if the fans of such teams would spend less time hating the Patriots and claiming the “game is fixed” and more time demanding excellence from their own teams then quite possibly things might change.

  20. So, this just guarantees that next years Super Bowl will be a 54-51 offensive slugfest. Gotta keep the sponsors happy

  21. Not sure why viewing was down however I believe that the concept of the Rams being there after what happened in the New Orleans game probably had something to do with it. When the NFL failed to address the issue, it may have given way to the idea that the game is fixed. When that happens the casual observer is no longer interested and you are left with your hardcore fan (i.e. wrestling).

  22. Game was HORRIBLE!!! I watched the 1st half and could not stomach any-more. Thankfully I avoided the halftime show as well…. Nice job NFL… Saints vs KC would have been a MUCH better game to watch, but we couldn’t get that game right REFS!!!! UGH!!!!!!

  23. Seriously, WHO CARES about ratings other than the network & NFL executives? I watch because I like football, not because I care if it’s the highest or lowest watched game. That being said, it was the worst title game of any sport since the UCONN/BUTLER NCAA title game – the one where neither team could hit a shot to save their lives.

  24. Lebron thought the game was boring too…which is funny since the NBA finals has been Lebron for the last 8 years and Lebron vs Golden State for the last 4. So interesting!

  25. Weird. Awkward. Boring snoozfest. Many wondered if the NFL’s best was actually represented. Half-time show stunk. Goff looked spooked out of his shoes. The only moment of excitement was that one pass when Cooks was standing alone in the end only to be broken up by a Pats DB. It deserved to get low ratings.

  26. Thought it was very interesting that very early in the game Robey-Coleman was called for a helmet-to-helmet hit which in of itself was not a bad as the hit in the New Orleans game. It’s easy to see why people feel games might be fixed with an attempt to get to a particular outcome.

  27. I’m a 40 year Pats fan but this game had low ratings written all over it. The rest of the country, understandably, is tired of seeing NE and the Rams still don’t have only been back in LA for a short time and have not (yet) won back that big fan base.

Not to mention everything I read stated it sounded like a Pats home game

  28. 13-3 with a Pats team that most of the US is tired of seeing and a Rams team who didn’t deserve to be there.

The Super Bowl was clearly the Chiefs/Pats two weeks ago and the Pats earned the victory.

With increased ratings for the year as a whole, it’s clear people are tired of the Pats. Which is ridiculous. All they do is win, I wish people were tired of my team winning SB’s.

  29. Proving once again the average NFL fan is a moron. This was as exciting if not more than any SB in a while. If you want offense and zero Defense become an NBA fan.Or just stick to Madden.

  30. Bills, Dolphins, Jets… That’s all that needs to be said. 16 of the last 18 seasons the patriots have been able to “pull off” winning the division. (10 strait) When all you have to do is win against inept teams such as these I would say you have a pretty good chance of getting to the big game.

  31. I wasn’t very interested after the Saints/Rams no-call debacle. I didn’t start watching until halfway through the 4th quarter.

NFL is dying a slow death.

  32. Should have term limits on QB’S Who want to watch a game that is a rerun. You kow whats going to happen one every play,

  33. Roger was hoping it will be Chiefs vs Rams. But the darn Patriots found ways to win again. Good thing Brady finished the Chiefs on the OT. Maybe the fans are disgusted that the Rams were handed the win and everbody hates the dominant Patriots. People are now used to participation trophies and look askance at the drive for excellence and sustain winning. It’s now about equality instead of competition to the max, sadly.

  34. I would not have tuned in to Chiefs/Rams 2 if it was going to be anything like the first game.

That was the worst football game at the NFL level I have seen in decades. Only video game nerds would like that crap. Not me. I like defense.

  35. Had the RAMS taken a lead, the ratings would have increased. Why do I say this? I was just at a conference with 900 people. Less than 20 of whom were for the Patriots. The nation tuned out. Now had they recieved a text saying RAMS are UP they would have turned on the TV hoping to see a PATS loss.

The bitterness and hatred has got to stop y’all!

  36. Are these traditional cable/TV ratings only? Does this include the online/streaming component? That’s an important figure to cover given how many people have cut the cord.

  37. We finally get a defensive game with both defences actually doing their jobs and lots of people are unhappy.
Yes, Vegas and the networks will probably fix this problem but at least young NFL fans got to see what the game used to be about, tough nosed defensive football that didnt resemble a basketball game.

  39. Lol at the people who think it’s rigged. The NFL brings in billions upon billions annually. No one is going to jeopardize that cash cow. Bet your the same guys who think the moon landing was fake.

  40. I didn’t watch, we went to the movies. I am a 55 year old lifelong football player and fan.
    ———————————————————————————————–
I felt the same way, but all the great food was in the room and could’nt just walk away.

  41. Shocker! Fans don’t want to watch fake super bowls.

Goodell got the matchup he wanted and it failed miserably.

    NFL is a disgrace.

  42. If the NFL is rigged, then I should have no problem predicting WHAT TWO TEAMS will be in the Superbowl next year. It will be the COWBOYS versus the CHIEFS or COLTS. There, come back next year and lets see if it’s fixed.

  43. i believe it was a factor of the patriots being there and people are sick of them. which is ridiculous cause its not their fault they are better then everyone in the AFC. but also a big factor is Rams shouldnt have even been there and proved it VALIANTLY with Goffs pathetic showing. pats vs. NO would have been awesome with 2 living legends at QB.

  44. Y’all crazy. It’s a tense & tied game in the 4th quarter. We’re not talking 49ers v Chargers Super Bowl 29. THAT was boring.

If you NEED a ton of scoring, then go watch basketball. Defense is allowable in the NFL.

  45. 2 teams that don’t score a passing td in the biggest game of the year, after the ram averaged 30 points a year….Add the refs awful calls vs saint and chiefs. Sounds rigged to me.

  46. People are sick of 3 things.
    1) Pats dynasty – suck on it
    2) SJW BS – we want sports not social commentary
    3) NFL front office – time for Roger to go

  47. It’s the game no one wanted to watch. It was the worst possible matchup the NFL could of asked for and the play lived up to it’s non watchability. Chiefs/Saints would have been awesome for everyone not in Bean town or on the west coast.

  48. Snooze fest. You can have exciting defensive games but this wasn’t one of those. The Rams didn’t look competent offensively for 9/10 of the game and the Patriots were better than that but not enough better to score many points. If there was a record for fewest passes thrown into the endzone this would have to take the prize.

  49. The bad officiating during the NFC/AFC title games probably left a bad taste in fans mouths.

I know a lot of fans that couldn’t root for LA because of the bad call but can’t find themselves rooting for NE.

I’m a Pats fan but this is what I heard from a ton of casual fans that didn’t watch the game last night.

  50. This is what Dictator Goodell gets for neglecting his duty to ensure a fair outcome in the NFC Championship Game. How much more compelling would a Brady/Brees matchup have been? In 12 years together, Payton/Brees have NEVER scored just 3 points.

    Instead, we got this garbage.

  51. So this means the NFL will be rigging the game against NE more so than usual. Bring It On!

    ———————

Maybe old school, as in before they had the forward pass. If I wanted to watch a boring, low scoring sporting event, I’d watch soccer. I don’t need or want a high scoring shootout, but something in the 20’s for each team would have been nice.

  53. the pats who have been there a lot and the rams who just moved combined with the non call is why. sure some people probably only watch halftime or turned it off when it was still slow (even though it was close until the end) but screw them. sorry it wasn’t your 43-40 game boo hoo.

    No – AC/DC

  59. Well, it’s the NFL’s fault because:

    – The rest of the league can’t keep the Patriots out of the Super Bowl
    – People (rightly or wrongly) think the fix is in because of poor officiating
    – There’s still some left over resentment (rightly or wrongly) from all the social justice stuff

  60. How the hell did the patriots end up with a defense after all?

It’s like someone else mentioned, the refs swallow their whistle in the playoffs, as ordered.

The problem with it is that not only were the normal PI calls ignored, so were some of the hits on qb’s that were called all year.

Got a hand it to Bill, he knows he just has to get in the playoffs then all bets are off on what would be expected to be called.

He’s playing chess while all the other coaches play checkers.

  61. depressingly dull game. worst halftime show.
Pat’s D was awesome, Brady looked every one of his 41 years, he’s the GOAT but starting to decline.
Rams D was also great, but you can’t be on the field that much and not wear down eventually.
Goff not ready for prime time.

oh, and the halftime show was god awful.

  62. Instant gratification world we live in. Nobody can enjoy a defensive struggle or a pitcher’s duel any more.

Personally, I loved it. The anticipation of when the dam would break was great. This beats 7 on 7 score fest, tennis break games every time. I’m glad the Twitter audience were bored.

  63. Bound to happen, the Pats are there way too often so there is a natural backlash there, the Rams play in front of a lame fan base and the commercials have kinda run their course. Personally I liked the defensive check match, it was a refreshing change-up from the track meets we have been seeing lately. Let the fair-weather fans dwindle away, true fans will watch and appreciate even if the game isn’t as sexy as a 42-38 game.

  64. Um, don’t people have to tune it and watch to see if it is a “boring” game or not? These low ratings were because people didn’t even bother to turn it on since it didn’t even have the right 2 teams in the game.

  65. From a spectator perspective, that was the worst Super Bowl of all time. Even when the 49ers beat the Broncos 55-10, that was at least entertaining.

    ————————————————————————————

I didn’t watch more than 10 seconds of the SB. Crazy that one team was robbed of going, and the other got there because of the luck of a coin toss.

  67. Had nothing to do with the score and everything to do with the two teams involved!

FACT: you can’t actually determine a game is “boring” unless you actually tune in and watch that it is boring! You need to watch first not after so that excuse holds zero water! And, blaming it on the Halftime show? really? Just stop with the lame excuses already!

No one was happy that the Patriots were back in the Super Bowl unless you were a Patriots fan. No one was happy that a front running, overhyped opponent who didn’t belong to begin with in the L.A. Rams were their opponent.

Any other excuse is full of holes and makes no rational sense.

  70. Here is a thought. The rest of the NFL needs to step up. Belichick makes the rest of the NFL look stupid. Why is that the Patriots fault??

  71. It’s cute how people think KC didn’t get punked in their own backyard with the refs in their back pocket…keep up the faux outrage haters!

  72. Patriots fans swear that Goodell is out to get them. He wouldn’t have done a thing to them any of the multiple times they cheated, if not for the other owners prompting him to do so. They love to claim that things go against them when the converse is true.

    ——————————————————-

There were several personal fouls in that commercial. Ha.

  74. Maybe it is because I am old school (and old). But I remember when a defensive game like that was a classic.

Congratulations to New England. (I’m a Steelers fan “sigh”).

  75. Things I care about: my team winning.

Things I don’t care about: TV ratings, “boring” complaints from people who watch the Super Bowl for the commercials.

  76. How could two teams who don’t throw a td in the superbowl even deserve to win a superbowl in today’s modern flag passing league. lol…Lets be real! The saints without getting robbed would be the real superbowl champions.

  77. The definition of “boring”: not interesting; tedious.

Alas, football IQ is relative as to whether a viewer found this game not interesting, tedious.

    I didn’t. Belichick didn’t. Brady didn’t. Coach Cowher didn’t.

I suppose it could be backlash from the NFL trying to redefine science that has existed for hundreds of years as well.

  79. Everyone outside Boston area is sick of Boston sports. The only area that rivals Boston area sports, in terms of lack of interest, is the California area…..what with Golden State and all. Im so sick of Boston and LA. GTFO with that crap NFL.

  80. What I find astounding is the number of people who didn’t watch the game but couldn’t wait to get here to comment about how they didn’t watch the game. How about this, don’t watch, don’t comment. Find something you like and stop being so miserable all the time. If the NFL is rigged, it’s been that way for a long time so if you’re a SB winner, it must be fake. If you think NE cheats, they’re only doing what your team did, or would have had they been smaahtah.

  81. Not sure who Deadline is, but Nielsen still rates SB 16 as highest ever, at 49.1. Won’t ever be broken due to splintered audience now, but can guarantee that millions watch it (streaming, for example) and aren’t captured in rating numbers now.

  82. I can’t watch anymore NBA or NFL thanks to Boston and LA. I came back here to see the “news” of the ratings drop. Everyone saw this coming with NE always winning. And since my team hasn’t beaten NE in any game in my lifetime, I know there is no hope of a superbowl as long as Belichick and Brady are running the NFL.

  83. I’ve been a fan of the NFL for 32 years. I just can’t find a reason to come back next year. So, Im hoping this is my last NFL comment anywhere for the rest of my life. NFL is the new WWE

  84. So people watch the because it was boring? How did they know unless they watched it?

I found it like watching a soccer game. Lot of buildup, little scoring. I can totally understand how the average football fan doesn’t get that. You have to be able to appreciate individual plays that don’t always end in a score. It requires patience. The instant gratification crowd don’t go in for that so much.

Hey Saints fans, did you see how a real QB drives down the field and secures the win?

    ——–

Actually running the ball got them down the field…and on the final drive. look a the 3rd down that went for about 20. Watch Gronk pre-snap and get to me… should have been a 5 yard re-do. he clearly takes 1.5 steps froward without setting up. Not sure how that didnt get called.

  86. It makes sense that in a year in which one team got to the Super Bowl due to a coin flip and the other made it only because of legendary officiating blunder that a large percentage of normal customers would be disinterested in the game. Don’t feel sorry for nfl, they will bounce back.

  87. Rams should lose some draft picks for trying to hide Gurley’s injury(s). Obviously there was something wrong there (or… was that just the dumbest offensive game plan in Super Bowl history??)

  88. Just a terrible game. Defensive battles can be great, but it just felt like both teams were stuck in the mud. Honestly the most boring Super Bowl ever. My team won last year, so that makes it great…but the SB 52 game itself was a great, exciting game. Not this one.

  89. How would people be able to formulate an opinion that it was a boring game unless they were watching it. I don’t but that. I think it had more to do with the fact that the Saints got hosed and an LA team that had no businesses being there was in it.

  90. Maybe one of the reasons for the low ratings is that the Rams didn’t belong in the game, following the no-call by the refs in the Saints game.

  91. It was a garbage game. Featuring a team the entire world hates and is somehow saluted by the media even with their shady past. A PED user got the MVP. And the Rams shouldn’t have been in the game. CBS was horrible.

  92. Liked the game and the winning team

Half time show sounded like a machine about to blow up and looked worse

Ads made me want to not by their products

  93. The commercials were spectacularly boring. The game, Goff was outclassed from the jump. McVay and his boy offensive genius title, reminded me of a Adam Gase type showing.

And some of the calls the Pat’s got….are real freaking old.

Halftime? If they were gonna have a Voice coach there…get Gwen Stefani at least I can dig that.

  94. Boring game altogether on the offensive side of the ball, the commercials with the exception of maybe one or two were lame, only one cool movie trailer and it was too short. I’m pretty sure most people just shut it off when the patriots finally got a touchdown in the 4th and got ready for work the next day. Everyone has seen the Patriots have plenty of SB win celebrations….no need to watch that either.

It’s funny because the one team that got robbed was NO not KC. Interesting perspective.
    Carry on.

  96. I don’t know the demographic for the typical NFL fan, but that halftime show was terrible. Too long, too loud, too obnoxious, too irrelevant, too ridiculous. Marching band would have been far more entertaining in half the wasted time. Match-up sure smelled fixed.

  97. Having watched the way the Pats completely shut down the Rams, and seeing the results of the prior month or so of football, I say with confidence there’s no way the Saints would have done better.

The Pats slogged through this one, but they were ready. They were ready for absolutely anyone.

  98. People are tired of the MVP winning after being suspended in the same season for cheating.
    ________________________________
And people are tired of the whining from fans of other teams, but hey it still happens

  99. Part of it is the two weeks of brow beating before the game. The media stories get so thin and boring. The over hype of players like Goff, Suh and CJ “Fats” Anderson becomes nauseous. It’s hillarious that the media really thinks we care about every aspect of their lives outside of football that by the time the game starts we are done with the whole event. They need to bring it back to a week after the conference title games and move the PB to Saturday or never.

  100. What kind of hold does Robert Kraft have on the entire NFL? Will the other owners allow him to destroy Pro Football?

  101. Just curious, since the article doesn’t mention it, but how are ratings determined? How much of a game must be watched to be counted? I say this because how would a viewer know before the game that it would be boring? The AFC championship was boring in the first half, a 14-0 Pats lead, but featured 31 points by the Chiefs in the second. So, perhaps the first half was boring, but not the second. How much of the Super Bowl would a fan have to watch to determine it was boring and tune out? Seems like the boringness of the game is a pretty flimsy argument for why ratings were down.

  102. Boring or not I did not watch it this year nor last year. I am just tired of Patriots in the Super Bowl. Nothing personal as I like Tom Brady. I want to see new teams in the title game. Patriots have had enough.

  103. I tuned out after the Rams who were moving downfield in the 4th for the go ahead score had their big gain nullified by a bogus holding call on the center. When that happened you knew the fix was in, wasn’t even worth watching anymore.

  104. 1.People didn’t want to watch the Pats in the Super Bowl – again
    2. People in California don’t care anout the Rams – or football in general
    3. Combining 1 and 2 …expected low ratings.

Just a terrible game. Defensive battles can be great, but it just felt like both teams were stuck in the mud. Honestly the most boring Super Bowl ever. My team won last year, so that makes it great…but the SB 52 game itself was a great, exciting game. Not this one.

    ———

And yet the Patriots had 26 1st downs and 407 yards of offense

  106. Saints Patriots SB would of been a higher scoring game for sure, the Pats still would of come out on top = Patriots 34 Saints 27

Fans felt the same way during SF dynasty.
Fans felt the same way during Dal dynasty.

    Keep pretending otherwise.
    ———–

Nope, teams loaded up to beat them, and did so.

    Without refs help.

    — Giants fan who witnessed the Giants do just that to SF.

  108. I heard there were about 74 Rams ‘fans’ at the game yesterday. The true loser in the fake super bowl event…

    The city of Atlanta.

  109. I was content with following the stats on the web after the league made sure a west coast team was in the SB. Chiefs vs. Saints would be a more intriguing game to watch. I’d rather watch chess than this boring game.

Not surprised. Everyone is tired of seeing the Patriots. They are like grandma’s meatloaf, consistently good but oh so boring.

    _____________________________________________

I get that everyone is bored with the Patriots, but if you lived here in New England, where there were so many bad years in all four major sports, you would understand WHY we are not bored with them. It’s a pretty incredible feat.

Exactly. BTW 44 does not mean no one was watching. Only about 100 million or so. I just want you all to know that I cried all night thinking about those poor souls who never got to see Brady make history.

  112. Yep, should have been Chiefs vs. Rams. NE and NO had no business being there, and NO WASN’T there for good reason.
    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

NE has no business being there? Interesting, they beat the vaunted Chiefs twice this year including in the AFCC game that was played in KC. Tell me how they had no business being there?

  113. “Good defensive battle” wow, the football know-nothings are out en masse today! But hey, how about that Maroon 5 just crushing it!!!! This Super Bowl was a new low in championship games. This “throwback game” crap is all coming from the NFL. No one, I mean NO ONE who knows anything at all about the actual game at the NFL level would call this game a defensive battle, unless they had a vested interest in spinning it positively. Ugh.

  114. Rigged games? This isn’t the NBA with gambling refs or the draft lottery gifting Ewing to the Knicks. Though a lot of good that did them as they continue to be the embarrassment of the league with over 45 years of ineptitude.

  115. My boy and I were talking before the game and we both agreed there was very little buzz with this game. Of course Im a Chiefs fan so that could be why we felt that away in this city, but I think it was more than that. I respect the Pats more than anyone. I am totally jealous of their success.! But I do think many people are tired of them. And I think most of us felt like the Rams didn’t deserve to be there after getting blatantly robbed by the ref. It all just felt very anti climatic after the great championship games.

  116. Nothing wrong with great defense. Until the last two minutes the game could have been decided by one big play or turnover…..

  117. The playoffs overall were a giant thud. Outside of the championship games, which were marred by bad officiating, these were some of the worst playoffs that I can remember. Looked so promising on paper going in, but I guess that’s why we don’t play the games on paper.

  119. I think it’s great that people chose not to watch a fake super bowl. Did you see the massive city-wide party New Orleans threw yesterday? Man…what a place! Now that’s a fan base for ya!

  120. It wasn’t because of the great defense or the Saints temper tanrums. People are just sick of the Patriots and didn’t want to watch them win yet another Super Bowl. The Chiefs vs Rams would have been a much better draw. The thing that matters about the score is whether it’s close or not and not the number of points. Do you think people would have preferred a 50 to 20 game?

  121. @ araidersfan says:

I wasn’t rooting for either team, but quite honestly I found last night’s defensive-oriented game refreshing. I’m old enough to remember when those types of games were commonplace (especially in the playoffs) in the days before the rules changes that were designed to artificially inflate scoring and passing stats.
    …………………………………………………..
You are spot on Dude! The game was fun to watch, what a chess match!
Hate the Pats, hate the coach if you want…. but they play SMART, disciplined football.
And no, I am NOT a Patriots fan.

  122. I think people just arent interested in Goff and the Rams, and that was made worse by what happened to New Orleans.

People say they hate seeing the Pats in the Superbowl, but I dont think its true. People like them, needs a team like the Patriots so you can point your fingers and say thats the bad guy.

  123. But, but, I thought ensuring both coasts were represented would ENSURE boffo ratings. Wait, it didn’t?

  124. Thanks to the corrosive mix of fantasy football and low attention span millenials, any game with less than 90 points scored is considered boring. Out here in the real world, this game was an incredible defensive football clinic ultimately won by the greatest dynasty in the 100 year history of the sport. If that bores you, I recommend literally any other sport.

  125. Also the worst commercial roster ever. There were 2, maybe 3 commercials worthy of superbowl commercial status. Easily the worst superbowl Ive ever seen.

  126. Not sure the Boring game is to blame , when the numbers get crunched so more you see something interesting …

“On Sunday, 57.4 percent of homes in Boston were tuned in to watch the Patriots play in their ninth Super Bowl in 17 years. In Los Angeles, just 44.6 percent of homes watched the game. The Rams moved back to L.A. in 2016.”

Moving from the L.A. market has always been a popular plan in the past …..

  127. Both defenses played exceptionally well. Certainly not great for the casual fan that rather be watching CSI reruns, but for real football fans it was excellent. I think if Goff had been able to tie it with a TD people would have liked it more, but it ended up one sided in most of the 4th.

  128. Honestly, hope to never have to see a superbowl as boring as that one. Either team deserved to win this dreadful game. They should of cancelled it after the 3rd quarter.

  129. Best outcome a who dat could ask for given the circumstances. Viewer ratings at a 10 year low. Lowest scoring SB of all time. Less than 200 Rams ‘fans’ were witnessed at the game. The Rams lost their fake super bowl without even sniffing the red zone.

    Cheers, homies.

  130. There’s a difference between good defense and bad offense, that game was bad offense.

Neither QB played very well, neither team had any inventive schemes and when big plays were there to be made the offensive players generally failed to make them.

The throw to Gronkowski wa a thing of beauty in a sea of ugly.

  131. The low ratings had more to do with the Saints-Rams outcome than with the actual game. The situation with the Saints was the culmination of a season full of horrific officiating, but that non-call and the league’s botched handling of it signaled to NFL fans across the league that the game is seriously broken and the league refuses to admit it. Unless they take action, my bet is that ratings are going to be low heading into next season as well.

NFL officiating has become a crisis that could determine the future of the league. They need to wake up and deal with it.

  132. The facts are no team in NFL history has benefited more from Ref calls then NE. The fact every game is close calls into question the greatness of NE. Go back check the records every NE win is close and during the game a major call or no call occurs. Fans have seem this record before and now are aware the NFL has an agenda. That is why more fans the ever are calling this a fake Super Bowl.

  133. Sean Payton & Brees Vs Belichick & Brady would have been a much better, and intriguing matchup.

With the amount of different formations that Payton runs his signature plays through it would have given Belichick and his staff a lot more problems to come up with a game plan specific defense. Just look at their past head-to-Head matchups. Sean McVay was amature hour.

New Orleans and all of NFL nation was robbed of a great Super Bowl matchup.

  134. The better team, who made the adjustments they needed to, who is calmer under pressure, and had the better quarterback….won the game.

It wasn’t a boring game if you’re a fan of real football and the chess match within.

  135. Ratings are based off individual households doesn’t account for the parties of people. And Super Bowl parties are a big thing. Except for the peeps that have no friends 😔. But it’s all good everyone is welcome at my house to watch the SB. But this years SB did suck and was super boring.

  136. Lousy game, boring Patriots, the quality of the games is poor and continues to erode as safety becomes more of a factor…..every other play seems to need some kind of comment from a former official to define the rules for the audience and we are lucky if a flag is not thrown…..the number of commercials and advertisements impacts the game flow….past that point the NFL is doing everything right

  137. Ok so the Pats latest SB was a 10 pt spread. So using this logic any SB win less than or equal to 10 points isn’t considered great and is subject to scrutiny of an NFL agenda. Which means that in 52 years only 27 teams have truly been great and above such scrutiny.

    Fake super bowl indeed.

  138. The only way that game wasn’t going to be boring was if the Rams won. The only reason it was boring is because that didn’t happen.

    I miss the 54-3 blowouts … sniff

  139. I am going to guess all these guys saying they didnt watch because they hate one or both of the teams…..they watched. Maybe to see a team lose rather than win, but if they have this much vested interest they did too watch.

  140. Sure it wasnt very exciting but defense still and always will win champipnships. It really reminded me of the 1999 NFC championship game between the bucs and rams.11 to 6 was that score.I used to hate brady and the pats but now I am happy for them. You got to accept what we are seeing. Its mind bloowing. New England had 15 new players this year but they do it again and again. AS Ric Flair used to say in order to be the man you got to beat the man.

  141. Payton and Brees beat the Pats so bad in 2009 that they sat Brady in the third quarter. It would have been nice to see a legitimate game between teams that BOTH deserved to be there and with legitimate GOAT candidate QB’s and coaches. Would have been a great game.

Instead, the refs robbed us all, and especially the Saints, of a decent Super Bowl.

  142. The facts are no team in NFL history has benefited more from Ref calls then NE. The fact every game is close calls into question the greatness of NE.
    __________________________________________________________________________________
This is definitely true. Always see them get the calls but never see very few go against them. They always seem to get the calls during the crucial moments of the game. Holding vs the rams. pick from chiefs etc and thats onlyh this year.

  143. Lowest scoring super bowl ever and they couldn’t find a MVP from the defense? I don’t know who those guys are either, but somebody must have done something…

  144. maybe the NFL should borrow the UFC’s motto”as Real as it gets” as we are learning they’re all fixed……and its about as close to being real as it can be while still fixing it with the refs. LOL – 1st penalty on a Pats 3rd down and a mile- “defenseless receiver” …knew right then

That sounds like your opinion….not facts. But here is a fact, they played the game and the Patriots won….again. It’s in the books….forever.

    =======

Hard to overcome make believe roughing the passer call or they would have.

NFL tries to manufacture outcomes and it’s back firing.

  147. I seriously love defensive football. I love a defensive battle. Outstanding defensive play defines games.

That Super Bowl had none of it. It was NOT a defensive battle. It was an aging (although no doubt the GOAT) QB against a young frightened QB and two offenses that were neither creative, or able to adjust. Bad football product yesterday. Like a Thursday night game.

  148. News story: “The CBS broadcast game out of Atlanta was seen by a total audience of 100.7 million, according to CBS Sports.
That number comes from when you add up everyone who watched on CBS the network, CBS Interactive, NFL digital properties, Verizon Media mobile properties, ESPN Deportes television and other digital properties…”

So no, you cord cutters aren’t too cool to be counted in the ratings…

  149. Maybe if the NFL didn’t fix both championship games people would be more interested. Both the wide receiver and secondary quality in the NFL is terrible bc of the year of watering down. Just because the rules are soft does not make these guys good. Reynolds on the Rams is one of the worst route runners I have ever seen and they targeted him how many times. Cooks drops a perfectly thrown TD. No one on the Rams can cover the Patriots lameo receiving corp….football is dying under Goodell

  150. Most people probably turned it off after that complete JOKE of a “tribute” to Stephen Hillenburg when they got our hopes up but didn’t play Sweet Victory at halftime.

  151. It appeared to be bad offense not really good defense. Both Brady and Goff were off with their throws too often. One of the worst SB’s ever. Add to that Fatigue made for horrible ratings.

  152. Lets be honest, no one took the team from La La Land serious… not even their own home market tuned in to watch….

  153. For me this was a SB that didn’t matter, I hardly watched any of it. It was hard for me to see the Rams there after seeing the Saints get hosed. Low ratings for this SB doesn’t surprise me. Taking into consideration the the Rams/Saints outcome & football fans totally sick of seeing NE ending up there so often, it was a recipe for disaster. No offense to NE, by far the most consistently competitive NFL team I’ve ever seen. Fans like me of 31 other teams wish their team could be that good.

  154. Football fans watch football. I don’t like the Pats or the Rams, had no rooting interest. But I watched because I love the game. When all the fantasy players and party-goers are gone, real fans of the game will still be watching the game.
