Brian Flores reportedly signed five-year, guaranteed contract in Miami

AP

During his first press conference as Dolphins head coach on Monday, Brian Flores said that he told the Dolphins during his interview that they should not hire him if their beliefs were not aligned about how to build a team.

Given the hints the Dolphins have made about taking a step back in the near term in hopes of building the foundation for a consistent winner in South Florida, one of those beliefs would likely be that they’d stick with Flores and the larger plan through the rough times that come as part of that process. Flores said on Monday that he anticipates “some pain” will be involved and he reportedly signed a contract that reflects the time it may take to heal it.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Flores signed a five-year, guaranteed contract with the Dolphins. That’s in contrast with other coaches hired around the league this offseason who signed four-year deals with a team option for a fifth season.

Coaches often get fired with guaranteed money left on their deals, so there’s no guarantee that Flores is going to see the end of the deal even if the current view appears to be that it is going to take some time to get the Dolphins on track.

  1. This is what I would do. It might take 3 years for ANY team involved in a true rebuild to collect draft picks and slowly build the base.

And, it could take up to 5 before you’re attempting to hold a Lombardi.

Good move by Flores. This is what I would do. I wouldn’t even take a phone interview without these kinds of things on the table.

These owners are morons to the nth degree thinking you can build a winner in 2 seasons.

Build your lines, find a QB you can coach up and slowly bring that QB along in the first 2 seasons.

One would think that this shouldn’t even need to be said, but one look around the league makes one think otherwise.

I would 75% of NFl franchises have it wrong in at least one key way or more than one way, with not understanding how to do it.

People say “BB has Brady”, which is true, but the approach should not be different.

The Rams have failed, for example. They’re now in a cap hell with a QB they have to pay.

Their window is slammed shut. You can’t do what Elway did with Denver because it’s an outlier.

If NE wasn’t so decimated by injury in 2015, Denver does not make it to the SB and win it. It never would have happened.

So many stars had to align, including Goodell covering for Gomer’s HGH use.

The bottom line is, the Pats Management Secrets Vol 1 book was written in 2004. If you read that and don’t pretty much grasp how to approach it, you’re dumb and shouldn’t be an owner, GM or Coach in the NFL.

Instead, these teams have been arrogant and literally working behind the scenes to try to influence Goodell instead of just strategically trying to mirror how BB does it.

Gase had a 5 year deal too, how did that work out? 10 HC’s in 15 years makes it pretty clear the fish rots from the head.

    2. Mike Tannenbaum was the GM.

If one piece is out of place, it won’t work.

    1. Owner stay out of the way.
    2. Good GM that gets it and sees it the same as the coach.
    3. Good coach who gets it and has leadership qualities.

Not every coordinator is really a leader. Most of them are only going to be good coordinators.

  5. Wow. 5 years for a guy that’s never been a NFL head coach a day in his life. Let me guess: He’s gonna try to implement Belichick’s system and tactics. I saw this movie before when McDaniels was the lead. It didn’t work then and it won’t work now. Belichick’s whole system is based off his rep of “Listen to me and you’ll become a champion”. McDaniels and Patricia were/are laughed at when they tried the same methods.

No money should be guaranteed in professional sports. Incentive based. You hit your targets you’ll be rich. Much more entertaining for the fan
    ==========================

That’s a terrible idea in team sports. Salaries based on incentives only creates extremely selfish players as there’s no incentive to share the ball or block extra hard for guys who are taking away touches from you. Perhaps individual sports based on performance like golf or tennis are more for your way of thinking.

The other issue with all the Florida teams is this:

    1. Lame fans
    2. Lame fans need hyped signings and draft picks to sell tickets.
    3. No tax attracts selfish, money hungry bums in FA.

We shall see if Ross finally gets it or not, but I am also not convinced Flores is ready either.

Miami got that it needed, a leader. Go Phins!

    —————————–

We have no idea if he is a real leader or not. He’s never run an entire team before. It may come down to his support staff he has with him.

    We shall see.

  9. It starts up front. How about having a line that can block somebody? Get a FB and a TE to help out. Give whatever QB we get more than 2 seconds…

  10. Until they draft better and get some talent it won’t matter who coaches them. Just look at Belichick’s record without Brady. I am sure he is a good coach but lots of good coaches wash out when they shouldn’t because the talent of the team.

Well technically, a dolphin is a mammal, but the rest of the sentence as far as this franchise is concerned is very accurate.

While I tend to agree with you McVay has turned the Rams into winners in 2 seasons…with practically the exact roster Jeff Fisher ran into the ground, and because of this success the rest of the league is going to expect it or they’re going to move on quickly to the next flavour of the month

  13. “Let me guess: He’s gonna try to implement Belichick’s system and tactics.”

He’ll bring some of that but he’s a fairly young and intelligent guy. I don’t think he’ll go totally hard ass on the team either. Will he expect them to work harder than they have recent season? Almost certainly.

And after the Super Bowl all the defensive players should have a fair amount of respect for him.

Not true at all. The roster is quite different than it was just a year ago let alone two years. Not to mention a more mature and in their prime players like Goff, Donald and Gurley. They added talent like Suh, Whitworth and Talib. The Rams have a lot of high draft picks and added a bunch of FAs in the process. McVay took over a team that had gone through a lot of its rebuilding process. Miami is just starting that after blowing their cap on old FAs past their prime.

    1. the division
    has regressed

    2. watch that window slam shut. they overpaid (threw away picks) for cooks, talib and peters and opened checkbooks on all of them including suh.

the roster is very top heavy, with how it is built.

translation? window likely slams shut and they will be masking what is a rebuild which always fails

baltimore or denver are good examples….look at them right now..rebuilding and not admitting it to the fans

Fact: BB drafted and groomed Brady.

If he had support in Cleveland and gotten Kosar out of there sooner, this dumb argument you all use would look even more dumb.

Get over it already. BB is the main reason for the team’s success. Brady is just the cherry on the top of the sundae.

  17. Another coach benefiting from Bill Bilicheck. He’ll be fired in a couple years. Glad he got guaranteed $$$ though

Can you please tell me what Lottery Numbers I should pick this week? You seem to know everything about the future. You realize that Chuck Knoll and Don Shula as well as Belichick all came from other successful regimes to HC from being an Asst. ? PS- if you want to sound smart and be taken seriously; learn to spell his name correctly.

  19. Great Coach and QB combinations happen. Look at Walsh/Montana, Knoll/Bradshaw, Levy/Kelly, Shula/Griese and yes, BB and TB12.
If you have a generally good roster, a really smart coach, a gifted QB and an owner that’s passionate about winning there’s a lot of success possible.

Sadly, we’ve had none of the above for decades. We can only hope that Flores is the first piece of the puzzle to build with.

  20. Football fans seem to forget that the Cleveland Browns fired Bill Belichick many years ago as their head coach. Owners want to win as soon as possible no matter what they state. Brian Flores made a valid point on building a team through the draft and what ever else he told the Dolphins. That stated it starts with a franchise quarterback, that’s the piece the Dolphins have not had since Dan Marino. Moreover their profound mistake with Ryan Tannehill as a franchise QB was huge. If only Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland knew how to recruit a quarterback or if Nick Saban had gone with Drew Brees when he was available.
