Dak Prescott expects Cowboys to “pay what’s deserved”

Dak Prescott wants a new deal this offseason. The Cowboys want to give him a new deal this offseason.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones already promised an “extraordinary contract” for Prescott, who “no one deserves to get paid fairly more than he does,” according to team executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Prescott is worth more than the $725,848 he made last season, which ranked 55th among NFL passers. He has made more in his off-field endorsements than he has in football in three seasons. But figuring out where he fits in the quarterback hierarchy is the hard part.

Prescott expects the Cowboys to “pay what’s deserved” and makes it clear he expects to be paid more than Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who has a team-friendly deal that paid him $15 million in 2018.

“Nobody’s wife makes as much money as his wife does either,” Prescott told Trysta Krick of USA Today. “When Tom Brady isn’t the breadwinner in the home, then that’s a great problem to have.

“So, in that case, he can do that. He can do his contract however you want to do it.”

Brady’s wife, model Gisele Bundchen, earned $10 million in 2018 and $17.5 million in 2017, per reports.

Is Prescott worth Aaron Rodgers or Matt Ryan money?

He is 32-16 since the Cowboys made him a fourth-round pick in 2016 and has set an NFL record for most fourth-quarter and overtime comebacks (15) by a quarterback in his first three seasons. But he has averaged only 3,625 passing yards per season with 67 career touchdown passes.

“People are going to question, and I want them to,” Prescott said. “I don’t care. I am here where I am today because of the people always saying what I couldn’t or could do.

“It’s almost comical sometimes. if I hear it or allow myself to get involved in the talk, sometimes it’s comical. But I just keep going out there and just doing what I know I can do best.”

  1. So he is saying 15 million per year is not enough to live on?

    What a jerk.

    Which, of course, makes him the perfect Cowboy, or Jet, or Steeler, or Colt, or….

  2. If I was the Cowboys I would wait until the end of the season.

    The Rams had a good game plan of stopping Zeke and make Dak beat you. It will be interesting to see if other teams apply this same formula. His consistency concerns me. Were the comeback wins against good team AND was his performance bad early so that the situation necessitated them falling behind.

    Lot of questions here!

  3. Prescott is 32-16 in spite of Prescott, not because of him.

    How he plays may be fine. Trent Dilfer and Eli Manning won a Superbowl, and Rex Grossman made it there.

  4. May they pay him a cap-crushing contract while he continues being mediocre QB who needs great players around here because he doesn’t make any around him better.

  5. Prescott’s worth what a mid-level QB is worth because that’s what he is. Without that Dallas offensive line and Elliott’s production, Prescott would be in Case Keenum territory.

  6. If Jerry gives Dak a new contract extension….he might as well sign Garrett to a 5 year extension as well. Why on this Planet does Jerry keep running out a boring bland mediocre product at his age?? He should be trying to win with some flash on his way out of this life~

  7. You can’t look at W L record for Dak…. That team has, until this past season, the Best OL in football and Zeke runs them into the playoffs each year.

  8. He is the kind of quarterback who ultimately kills you because, when he’s on, he can look brilliant, but he can’t sustain it during a 3-game playoff run and never will. Coach killer.

  9. Eli is going to finish in the top 10 all time in every major passing category and yet he’s being put in the same sentence as Prescott and Dilfer. It never ends.

  10. Mid-level quarterback at best right now. As soon as a the opposing team takes away his run game the Cowboys game is over cause he isn’t going to win it a majority of times with his arm and leadership. As moe film gets out there on his tendencies I see him having mor trouble than good times…..Jerry needs a real QB for the Cowboys after wasting years with Romo……here they go again……
    Clap coach he is going to need it.

  11. He’s not worth top tier QB pay. It’s scary because Jerry is probably going to pay him 22m/25m per year-60/70 mil guarantee. We’ll be back in Cap Hell in a few years with no SB to show for it.

  12. Whatever contract dak prescott signs…

    … he should give half to Ezekiel Elliott.

    O – H !!!

  13. He should get around $27 to $30 million with about $70 million guaranteed, it is a QB market and desperate teams will drive the price (Elway). QB tag cost is about $25 million this year and could be upwards to $30 next year. Either Dallas lets him walk next year as a free agent and try to draft a QB or sign a different free agent this year (Flacco, Bortles, Tyrod, Dalton, Foles and any other retread like Tannehill) or they can tag him for around $30 million next year. Dak is currently a QB who had a crappy O coordinator who won enough games to get to the playoffs and actually win one which is better than Romo. Is it worth the risk to draft another Weeden, RG3, Tannehill, Bortles, etc or stick with what you got.

  14. It is very unbecoming to talk about another family’s income, young man. Take care of your own business and keep it as private as possible.

  15. I believe Jerry Jones has lost the ability to objectively evaluate talent. If he sees Dak as a franchise QB, then Cowboy Nation get ready for a decade of mediocrity. Eagle and Giant fans should rejoice and pop some bubbly. After this article, I going to drink some single malt scotch…..a whole LOT of single malt scotch.

  16. He expects to be paid more than Brady when he has a 1-2 playoff record.
    Seems like something a jerk would say.

  17. I think he’s saying they are going to pay Elliot market value since he’s 92.5% of the offense.

  18. Not a fan, not a detractor. But some facts:
    Jerrah has a .54 winning percentage since becoming GM, which is not even 9-7
    Jason Garrett is .57 which is barely 9-7
    Dak .67, which is almost 11-5

  19. I actually like Dak, but this is the part where you say, “I just want to play football so I’ll let my agent hand all that business related stuff off of the field.” Why even comment on what another player or what another player’s wife makes? I just hope the contract is organization friendly….I get the feeling this team might need to move on at some point if he cannot get more accurate with the football.

  20. If I’m Dallas I pay this man and bring in Tom House every year to work with him on maintaining consistent throwing mechanics. And this is not a knock on Prescott, as Tom Brady has worked with House for many years. Prescott comes off to me as a player who will reward that loyalty. And he has been an excellent representative as the face of the franchise. Pay the man.

  21. Or maybe Dak could say something like: “I’m honored to be the QB for the Dallas Cowboys who have had some of the greatest players in league history. I know the business end will take care of itself. I just want to win games and continue the legacy.”

    BTW – I am no fan of Jerrah’s ‘Boys.

  22. What is a fair amount for an average passer in a passing league? The salary cap has skewed way too much to QBs, but blame GMs and owners for that. Starting with the Ravens, right through to Niners and Vikings.

  23. I wish him all the best. Get as much money from the Jones’s because that “cheerleader” disguised as a head coach will never lead Dallas to a Super Bowl title.

  24. As much as I want to make a joke out of this, he’s worth about 70-75% of Rodgers, so around 25ish given the market for QBs. Nobody would break the bank for him, especially after Cousins failure. Let him walk if he wants 30 as he won’t get it.
    The Pats are extremely lucky Tom has not demanded a top salary, and I expect he comes back in his next contract for around 20 a year for 2 years. Pats spread it out over 3 years with a signing bonus and pay him up front most of it.

  25. Tom Brady is NOT the bread winner in his family? Wow, what kind of family has to visit a soup kitchen or be homeless on $15 million per year before tax? LOL.

  26. Every Eagles, Giant and Redskin fan are praying for Dak to get 26+ mill a year with 60 guaranteed.

    Putting TB12 out there as not the bread winner in his family was way out of bounds. Brady makes that low of an income because he chooses to be cap friendly to win (6) Rings in (9) tries. At any time he wants he can make $35 million a year. He just chooses not to. Jerry, please pay Dak as much as possible..

  27. Jerrah needs to get a fishing rod like in the Geico commercial and hang a dollar over the head of Dak to show him who is the boss.

  28. Every number this guy has Is padded by his first year. Problem is you give any NFL defensive coordinator a year of tape and they will expose you. It’s exactly what happened to Dak. Cowboys over reacted after his first season and they are paying for it now. By the way lifelong Cowboys fan here and feeling every year of it at this point.

  29. Jerrugh will offer Dak qa bare bones minimum salary, with low guarantees, but a free family boat ride on his new COWBOY 1 $250M yacht. How bout dem COWBOYS!

  30. But he has averaged only 3,625 passing yards per season with 67 career touchdown passes.
    ===============================================

    Because the Cowboys have the RB who has won the rushing title 2 of the last three years. He doesn’t have to throw it 50 times a game.

  31. While the comment itself isn’t necessarily derogatory, I’d be very careful taking about another guy’s wife and how much money she earns. Again what he said wasn’t disrespectful but you’re talking about someone’s family and discussing their finances. Not exactly the right thing to do

  32. If you watched Dak Prescott’s career in college, and if you’ve been watching him in Dallas, the guy is awesome. All he does is win. And, he’s done it at every level. He reminds me of Roger Staubach. You can’t watch this guy and not love him. Hey, if they’re paying guys like Case Keenum, Alex Smith, and Kurt Cousins the kind of money they’re getting paid, Dak Prescott should be at $30 million per year. Just keep watching, or at least start watching. He’s just scratching the surface. He’s nowhere near maxed out on his growth as an NFL QB. He has the tools to keep it going for a long time. $30 mil.

  33. Does he know Brady took less before he met Gisele It helped Brady to continue taking less after he met Gisele I’ll give him that but Brady has made 220 million in the NFL and at least 100 million in endorsements doesn’t include his personal investments How much more do you need in life.Very arrogant comments he made

  34. Would I rather have him than Matt Ryan? Yes. Would I rather have him than Aaron Rodgers? No. Dak should be paid, but his salary should be somewhere between #15 – #10 among QBs.

  35. Not being a Cowpie fan or Jerry Jones fan, I really do not care how much Prescott is paid. Pay him a lot, and they have less money to bring in talent around him. Pay him too little and he winds up leaving as a free agent. I am fine with either outcome.

    Don’t think that was even remotely the point. Not even remotely. Wow.

    says the Philly fan who’s team lost twice to Dak last season. At least the Cowboys players love Dak as opposed to most of the Eagle players who don’t like Glass-on Wentz.
    I also hope the Cowboys lock-up Dak to a multi year contract so he can continue to whip the She-gles for years to come.

  38. The players union needs to fix this issue. You have average quarterbacks taking up most of the teams cap.The overall Team cap is limited and there is no reason why the quarterback cannot be limited.

  39. is he really going to walk into negotiations talking about how much money someone else’s wife makes?

  40. Why are Philly fans on here running there mouths? Carson Wentz can’t even compete with his backup, who is about to bail btw, and they wanna talk trash about our QB? Offensive ROY, 32-16 as a starter, yet to have a losing season, has actually played in playoff games. Give as much credit as you want to Zeke but I personally don’t forget the criticism and blame Romo took for Dallas failures in his time when they had no run game so don’t understand how there’s criticism for Dak too for having a run game to help him out. This downplay of Dallas QBs is nothing new. Romo “sucked” because he “put up big stats but had no rings”, however Aikman was “overrated” because despite his rings “he didn’t put up big stats”. So stats matter when downgrading Aikman but don’t matter when crediting Romo? Got it. It doesn’t matter what Dak does he will never get credit for his contributions or accomplishments. The credit will be given to somebody ekse much like it is with Aikman and much like blame was always given to Romo. Interestingly enough though if Zeke is given credit then the haters would just pass it down to the O line to downplay how good Zeke was and any credit given to the O line would be passed down to the defense to downplay them and so on and so on as one big loop. For example: Saying Aikman was a great QB usually gets a “well all he had to do was handoff to Emmitt” but saying Emmitt was great leads to “any RB could’ve run behind that O line.” If this was a story was about Wentz gettin a new contract Eagle fans would be sayin he’s the best in the league and should be paid as such. But fact is Dak’s shown himself to be better. Facts are facts

  41. Stay classy Dak. Fraud QB, Fraud good guy. Have fun buying more adult toys with your bud Zeke you beacon of a role model. Dallas, sign him now.

  42. He’s a serviceable QB. He may end up being a great QB. Or he might have already peaked. If I’m Dallas I offer him ~avg starter money and if he balks you let him try free agency.

  43. 20 million plus per season is the starting price. He isn’t worth it but that would be the going rate for him. Then they pay Lawrence what a Mack salary… Then they pay Cooper 17 mill cuz that’s what he is worth then… Zeke what 17-18 mill… 74 mil for 4 players yeah that should work.

  44. “Prescott expects the Cowboys to “pay what’s deserved” and makes it clear he expects to be paid more than Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.”

    Seriously? This guy is delusional. Brady is the GOAT. Prescott has won exactly nothing. Case closed.

  45. a middling boot licking house staff caretaker quarterback is going to make contract demands after comparing himself to Brady when everyone know he plays like Bortles;

    welcome to the NFL, the Newengland Football League;

  46. Both sides agree that he will be treated fairly, but that begs the question, do they agree on what is fair? Prescott thinks he should be paid more than Tom Brady, but does Jerry Jones think that is fair to pay him that much, since Presott is only 1-2 in the playoffs and he never played in the SB, but Tom Brady has 6 Super Bowl rings and 9 trips to the Super Bowl?

  47. Dak have you won a Super Bowl, Dak have you been an MVP, Dak have you ever led the league in any passing statistic? Yes, you should make more than the 700k deal, but son, REALLY? Compared to your peers you are slightly above average. This crazy salary situation withQB ‘s will be the demise of the league. The money these teams are paying one positional group compromises the entire team. When a QB counts more toward the cap than his entire OL and TE, there is a severe problem. Teams no longer have the ability to build a team beyond their initial rookie contracts. As soon as a player excels, his price tag becomes exorbitant and the player is lost to the highest bidder. Truly, a team’s core is made up of 3-4 players(because of costs). The rest is free agent signees on prove it deals and rookies. When you cheer for a team year in/ out, it is really a small group. Damn shame!

  48. Aww how will poor Dak feed his family only making $15mil/year? Brady doesn’t take a pay-cut because his wife makes a bunch of money. He takes it because he knows he can live off $15mi per year and knows that because of the salary cap his team is able to sign better players and that will help his legacy. It seems to have worked pretty well. I hope the Cowboys sign Dak to a huge deal and get burned. It’s pretty obvious to everybody except Dak that he’s nothing special.

  49. The Brady contract is interesting. While he plays for this the evil empire I hate him, but I suppose he has sacrificed money for rings and you can’t knock him for that. We as fans jump on these highly paid players when they plead their case for more money so we have to give Brady credit. Some say he benefits from under the counter gratuity from Krafty Kraft but that will be hard to prove, but we do know the Patriots history of not playing within the rules. But until then you have to give Brady credit. Would he be quite so generous if his wife didn’t earn the big bucks, I think he would. With or without the brown envelopes I think Brady values the team higher than money, it just makes it easier for him to make that decision.

  50. I’m not a Dak hater, he has some really good traits, great teammate, players follow him, athletic runner, the negatives are he is a check- down qb who rarely can hit wide open receivers on go routes. You can win regular season games with him if you stack players around him but he doesn’t elevate anyone’s play, he can’t carry a team, and if they pay him like a franchise an, they will lose players they need to win with him. He should take 15 mil, the team can take that and still keep the team together, anything more, he will sink the franchise. I like Dak, but I would rather play the season out, fire garrett, bring in Sean payton and see if Payton wants him or draft a an in td 1

  51. No quarterback is worth beans without a line… they have to get paid too. Good luck, Dak, you’ll need it.

  52. Quarterbacks have always been paid much more than any other players in the NFL. When Joe Montana and Steve Young were competing for a job, they had multi-million dollar contracts, but a starting linebacker on the same team may only be paid about $100,000. When John Taylor, a starting receiver for the Niners, retired, he had to drive an 18 wheeler truck for a living. A linebacker who started for the Niners became a carpenter when he retired. However, salary for the quarterback position is getting out of hand when Prescott demands to be paid in the 20 million dollar range.

  53. Teams may start drafting quarterbacks every 3-4 years to avoid paying these crazy quarterback salaries. When their rookie contract is up, just let them walk and start over. Drafting a guy like Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold sure beats paying Joe Flacco and even Eli Manning more than $20 million per season.

  54. Interesting if you take the top two QB’s picked that year salary totals, Goff and Wentz over the first 4 + 5th year options and Dak gets a new a year before them in the $25 million
    a year range Dak will over his first 4-5 years actually out-earn them both as a 4th rd pick and being grossly underpaid the first 3.

    The rookie salary cap actually works out to get a star their 2nd contract faster.

  55. Pay the man!

    – the rest of the NFCE

    In all seriousness, take a so-so QB, give him a good Oline and good running game, with some receivers and he can put up good numbers. The supporting cast is who should be paid, not the QB.
    I wouldn’t pay him that much.
    Let him walk.

    If Jerry gives Dak a new contract extension….he might as well sign Garrett to a 5 year extension as well. Why on this Planet does Jerry keep running out a boring bland mediocre product at his age?? He should be trying to win with some flash on his way out of this life

    ====================================

    the cowboys finished in the top 8 of the league. boring or not, it was effective. many say the pats sure didnt look flashy winning the super bowl, but they won the super bowl so who cares how it looked? dak is very clutch at the end of games. he is still developing. hes only 25 years old. everyone blames him for everything but who would you replace him with?

  57. I haven’t posted here in about a year, but I felt compelled to say something after reading this. Dak Prescott is a slightly below average quarterback with a fantastic offensive line and great running backs. Whenever he decides to stop being a running quarterback, he’s awful. Truly awful. He misses wide open receivers. He throws interceptions instead of taking a sack Horrible. He’s not a pocket passer and never will be. No way they get to the Super Bowl with Dak Prescott as quarterback. He had an amazing rookie year, but he was running a lot that season, and he had the added pressure of having Tony Romo beside him on the roster. How delusional is this guy?

  58. Jerry loves Dak Prescott for the same reason he loves Jason Garrett; they both bow, kiss, grovel and call him MR. Jones

  59. Cowboys are close. very close. Dak is a winner. They’d be foolish to start over with a new QB if they don’t pay Dak.

    Question: who is a better ‘passer’, Dak or Cousins? Cousins. Nobody questions Cousins passing ability.

    Question: who is better at everything else when it comes to being a QB? who is a proven winner? Dak. Cousins has proven he can’t do anything else as a QB even average when you look beyond his arm talent.

    Always go with the winner, and not the flashy looking arm. Dak DESERVES more than Cousins. Dak knows this.

    Cousins completely WRECKED the QB salary cap hit for every team from here on out, because every QB that wants a new contract is going to look at Cousins as the minimum for guaranteed money. So laugh all you want at his contract and the vikings for paying him that contract, but your team is next in line and the price is only going up.

    Meanwhile my vikings will go 0-16 for the next two seasons, cousins contract will be up, and they will be sitting pretty to draft trevor lawrence. good times ahead!

    Cowboys scored 22 against a Rams defense that held the Pats to 13, losing by 8. That’s not a bad performance. And no, I am not suggesting Dak is at Brady’s level.

  61. Redskins fan here, Dallas sucks blah blah blah. Fact is, Jerry Jones is actually a pretty decent GM and gingerbread boy isn’t that bad a coach. I’m just saying step into my slice of heaven for a while and you’ll appreciate them a bit more.

  62. “Nobody’s wife makes as much money as his wife does either,” Prescott told Trysta Krick of USA Today. “When Tom Brady isn’t the breadwinner in the home, then that’s a great problem to have.

    1. It doesn’t matter what a spouse makes. The spouse isn’t playing in the NFL.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Nah, JJ should call both of them in with their agents state there is $X to pay you guys with. You guys work out who gets what and get back to me.
  64. how a middling running back with a caretaker arm ever get to do commercials?
    Dak has won how many titles?
    he’s been to how many Super Bowls?
    oh, that’s right, he’s a good boy, tows the NFL party line, licks Jerry’s boots;
    and he thinks that will get him paid like Cousins, Keenum, Bortles if not top flight guys like Foles, Brady and Roethlisberger or Brees;
    won’t be pretty when reality strikes after the Cowpies go one-and-done again in the playoffs next season;
  65. First of all, any QB paid more than TB12 is overpaid. The NFL is spiraling out of control when it comes to QB contracts where teams are now FORCED to overpay for average talent.
    I have an idea, why not allocated a set amount of say $20m for each team to pay it’s starting QB and then in each contract have a bonus of $5m for the QB that wins the SB each year? This way, more of the cap can be spread around to other players and maybe a few teams would be able to keep some of their FAs by being able to offer them more money that’s not tied up in their QB.
  66. But, Brady was giving the Pats team-friendly contracts before he met Giselle. Is Dak comparing his value to that of the GOAT? Win your 2nd playoff game first. After 3 years as a starter TB12 had 2 rings already, with a 3rd on the way.- again, before he met Giselle. Here is a plan for Dak: Sacrafice for your team, marry a Super model or movie star, and you can also leave Jer-ah enough cap room to buy some talent around you..
    Strangely New England just won Lombardi #6 with just 2 Pro-bowlers on the roster, while Jerahs boys had 6!
  67. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones already promised an “extraordinary contract” for losing in the first round of the playoffs.
