Kirk Cousins has been “frustrated” all offseason

The Vikings spent all that money to sign Kirk Cousins so he could get them beyond a playoff berth.

So when they didn’t get to the postseason at all, there was plenty of disappointment, especially for Cousins himself.

Via Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Vikings quarterback said during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show that last year could not be viewed as a success on any level.

The short answer is no,” Cousins said. “We didn’t make the playoffs. There were high expectations and we didn’t deliver, and so I’ve been frustrated since the season ended.”

There were some impressive stats along the way, but Cousins said he’s anxious to get started to try to make amends.

“I wish the 2019 season started tomorrow,” he said. “I’m ready to go and make amends for 2018. It’s been frustrating to know I have to sit here for whatever it is, seven or eight months before we get back at it.

“It has been a tough January for me. I haven’t been sleeping well, that kind of a thing, because, yeah, it just left a bad taste in my mouth the way the season finished up.”

Of course, he can sleep on some really expensive bedding, since he’s making $29 million next year. So he’s got that going for him.

  1. The Vikings had their one chance to win it all in 2017, when all the stars were in alignment for them and everything went their way. In 2018 we saw the real Minnesota Vikings, a team in decline and destined to finish at the bottom of the division for years to come.

  2. You should still be a Redskin, Kirk. We’d make the playoffs if you were with us. Too bad you sold out to become a Viking! You don’t need all that money! How many millions is enough?

  3. This guy is becoming the king of “feels bad man” after the season is over. How about you throw the ball more than 5 yards next year so the Vikes have a chance to win oh yeah and learn how to scramble.

  4. He just needs to stop wincing in the pocket before anyone touches him. He’s one step away from happy feet. With or without great OL play the good QBs can stand in the pocket. The league will take care of him, anytime the QB gets touched its a flag, so man up.

  5. Wow, Impressive stats along the way, yet just missing the playoffs. Who could have predicted that? At the very least MN has two things going for them. They don’t have to listen to the constant off season chatter on if he will sign long term or get tagged. The 2nd is that while his cap number is high the next 2 years, they can at least plan for those impressive stats…and possibly just missing the playoffs. Kirk was frustrated after 2016 & 2017 also but that frustration didn’t translate into different results.

  6. I love it when a man making 20+ million a year says ” I feel bad, can’ t sleep at night”. Hard to feel sorry for you,Kirk, try living paycheck to paycheck and see how you feel/sleep.What should make you feel awkward is that you, alone, make more money per game then most make per year. Or that your outrageous salary has cash strapped the Vikings team. This is a win NOW scenario and you can’t even get to the wild card game. 29 million could pay for an entire starting OL.

  7. Well, maybe you shouldn’t have done a complete shakedown on the Vikings when you signed your ginormous contract.
    Now with your team hamstrung against the salary cap, and only 5 draft picks in April, you should expect very little relief.
    This team’s future is looking very dark indeed.
    Do you Vike that?

  8. He got the dough $ and that’s all he needs,…he’s not a football player, he’s a business player. Listen to all his interviews, it’s cliche after cliche…bla bla bla.
    Bud Grant used to say some guys can’t afford NOT to play…it’s a business

  9. After signing him to that big contract, did anyone really expect Cousins to lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl ? Cousins never got the Redskins anywhere close to the big game. It follows a bunch of wasted money on quarterback’s that can’t deliver – Scott Mitchell, Matt Flynn to name a few. It never works out.

  10. Kirk Cousins has become a master at manipulating the Market while being a half a quarterback. There are times where he looks fantastic and teases you, Then he will panic in the pocket and do something like throw the ball backwards to your running back, Or making a throw that goes to absolutely no one. He seems to have no feeling for the rush at times, And his footwork in the pocket is not where it needs to be. Another thing is his moxie. He is good person, I believe that, But his aloof attitude can be irritating, And i can’t imagine it doesn’t affect his Viking teammates ( Case in point, The thielen meltdown on the sidelines in week 17 against the bears) It is not Kirk’s job to coach the Vikings, It is Mike Zimmer and the offensive staff. The question is, Will he listen, Or continue this behavior. He says he is frustrated, Ok. The question becomes then, What are you going to do in the off season to improve not only your game, but your swagger and moxie. Have an edge week to week like you had in Washington against the Bucs. That is what i want out of my quarterback. Case Keenum had that, Kirk Cousins needs to find it. If he doesn’t, He will be nothing more than a average overpaid quarterback, And the man responsible for firing of Mike Zimmer and Rick Spielman, Followed by a exit of Cousins out of Minnesota.

  11. He doesn’t feel any more frustrated than the Redskins fans were after he chocked in the Giants game to prevent the Skins from making the playoffs or the Viking fans when Cousin again chocked in the last game of the season to miss the playoffs. If he didn’t chock, he wouldn’t be frustrated. Kirk needs to stop talking about his feeling and start delivering in the clutch

  12. Like I said before (and others have said), Cousins is more of a timing pocket guy, Case was like other recent Viking QBs in being more mobile and looking for the open guy. This meant WRs didn’t worry about their routes and the line didn’t have to be all that fantastic at holding the pocket and the RBs & TEs didn’t have to be all that great about that side of things either. You all saw the sideline contretemps between Kirk and Thielen about routes & timing, but the bigger point is how bad is the Vikings coaching that this wasn’t foreseen nor changes made to suit?

  13. Get some line help. The line was a joke last year, every game I watched the defense was pushing straight up the middle and collapsing the pocket, usually without blitzing. That said, Cousins didn’t elevate his play to compensate for the poor line play.

    If they improve the line and they still dont make the playoffs and win a game next year, then I’ll throw it all on his feet. Then they’ll only have 1 year left of the contract and it will be start over time again.

  14. Cousins will always tease fans into hoping he won’t fade at the end of the season in big games. He’s got great stats between the 20’s, but in red zones, not so much. The Vikes got taken by this fraud. He isn’t doing any better with them then he did with the Skins. You were had, Vikes. Get used to missing the playoffs for the next few years. I’m glad he’s gone from D.C.

  15. It’s simple: Kirk is a supremely talented QB when everything is going exactly right. With a clean pocket and well-run routes, he is a top 10 NFL QB. When things break down and the going gets tough, Kirk panics and makes a mistake. Depending on the flow of the game, he seems to be either the best or the worst player on the field. He is the opposite of “Joe Cool”

  16. Remember how stupid the ‘Skins were for not signing him long-term? He’s a good dude, but turnover prone and doesn’t show up when it matters.

  17. I’d say there’s a lot of pressure on him for next season, but he’s got a fully guaranteed contract.
    I don’t blame him for taking it, but he was in Minnesota this year exactly what he had been in Washington for the last 3 years. If they thought they were buying something else, that’s on them.

  18. “Hey Lama, how about something, you know, for the effort” Rather than “total consciousness,” just a few less fumbles would do.

  19. I’m sure many of you have coached at some level, even small children or high school. If you have, you probably recognized a special spark in a tiny number of players. That intangible that makes people a winner, or without it, just a player. You also probably have tried to coax that spark out of players who had all the skills, use them well, but simply weren’t leaders and winners. But if it isn’t there, it isn’t there. I wanted to like Kirk cousins, but I was scared about the Redskins letting him go without a peep. Now I see why. He has a pretty good skill set and he uses it well, but he lacks that spark that will make him a leader and a winner. At his best He’s a high-level game manager, and that is neither exciting nor enough to lead a franchise like this to glory. Piling up short passes and big statistics without the rings to show for it. I would rather take a chance on some young kid full of positive energy and confidence then watch my season slip away again. This will go down in history right behind the Herschel Walker trade, not because of all the players affected directly, but because of the impact From the salary cap on the overall team. . Sorry Kirk I’m no longer a believer. I’m pretty frustrated too.

    ================================================================================

    The Vikings OL is no where near great. Saying a QB should stand strong in the pocket with an atrocious OL is stupid. What great QB’s stand in the pocket consistently when they have less than 2 seconds to throw the ball?

    If he stood in the pocket like you wanted, I bet you’d be the same one complaining about him not scrambling when he gets knocked out for the season with injury because he stood strong in the pocket.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Glad he’s gone? Really? All these Skins fans here seem to forget who they have starting the 2019 season.
    Colt
    McCoy
    Now, are you really glad he’s gone?
  22. Alex Smith’s unfortunate leg injury saved Kirk further embarrassment. Alex Smith stays healthy, the Redskins make the playoffs. Then he’d have to explain why his previous team did better without him.
  23. Should have thought about that before raiding their cap position for 30 mil per.
    That ensures the Vikes will never win anything. They’d have to have 3 A+ drafts in a row to have a a shot at a Lombardi, and it will take 2-3 years to get there.
  24. “I haven’t been sleeping well”
    So, you took money from Sleep Number Beds and it’s not working for you? Just like the Vikings? Hmmmmmm. Ironic.
  25. NO SYMPATHY for him here !!! He needs to spend the off season with a real QB who can teach him the basics… Like BALL SECURITY !!! He single handily lost the bills game because he does not know how to hold onto the frigging ball!!!!!! ” NOT A COUSINS FAN !!! “
  26. The definition of insanity is signing a QB who puts up decent stats but chokes in every big moment he faces and think he’s the guy to lead your team to a Super Bowl .His season in Minnesota mirrored his career in Washington leaving everyone frustrated at his mistakes that lose the key games to keep the team outside the playoffs .
  27. This is the same stuff he said in the off-season when he was with the Redskins, after they blew an opportunity for the playoffs by losing to the Giants in a must win game.
  28. The Vikings had their one chance to win it all in 2017, when all the stars were in alignment for them and everything went their way. In 2018 we saw the real Minnesota Vikings, a team in decline and destined to finish at the bottom of the division for years to come.
    Then he looks at the pile of money and instantly feels better.
    ____________________________________________________
    I’ve gone my entire 20’s working 2 jobs just so I can make rent and have an extra 50 dollars to take a chick to Applebees, and beginning in my late 30’s, ive been really fortunate in life for which i’m thankful. This whole “money cures all” is so grossly misinformed by most people and I get it. I used to think that. More money more problems can be a real thing, most people have no gd idea and it drives me crazy.
  30. Frustrated? What a joke. I’ll tell you who is frustrated….the Vikings front office for giving this guy a guaranteed $84M contract and missed the playoffs. That’s frustrating. Cousins has 84 million reasons to not be frustrated. Do you think he cares? Probably not. He’s frustrated because he has to wait two more years to fleece another team out of a truckload of money.
  31. He can put up impressive looking stats, but when the pressure was on this past season, he just didn’t come through. He’s frustrated? Take a number.
    Unless Cousins can learn to use his feet to avoid the rush instead of standing in the pocket like a statue, things aren’t going to get any better. This team has a lot of improving to do if they’re going to catch the Bears, starting with the OL, but they’ll also need Cousins to do something he didn’t last year; come through in the clutch.
  32. He says all the right things. If only he could make all the right throws. Can we hire Keenum to train him on scrambling this offseason?
  33. Look I’ve seen absolutely everything as a Vikings fan for decades and I’m just as frustrated as the next fan. But it’s truly sad to see all these fans bashing the first year of a three year deal. Get a grip! It was super frustrating not to be at least a playoff team but it was never SB or bust in year one. But do I believe it is SB or bust during the three year contract? YES! Or it will be a bust.
  34. “It’s been frustrating to know I have to sit here for whatever it is, seven or eight months before we get back at it.” The problem lies right here in his quote…He’s going to SIT there for 7 or 8 months?!?! Brady just won a championship and he’ll be right back to working on his craft after a nice little 2 week vacation. Cousins is a joke and always was…”YOU LIKE THAT!”
  35. Kirk, you’re so stupid and such a waste of cash. The offseason hasn’t even started yet! Why don’t you go micromanage your 10 minute increments again, weirdo.
  36. operations666 said “How many millions is enough?”
    Why isn’t that question being asked of the obscenely wealthy (> $1 billion in wealth)? Jeff Bezos alone has enough money to eradicate world hunger 6times over!
    But, I think that, at some point, it stops being about greed for money and more about greed for power and influence.
  37. Line isn’t great it it’s not the worst either. Middle pack.
    Somethinlike 14 teams gave up more sacks than MN. Easy to blame the line when you’re unwilling to admit a coach or draft mistake at an and rb
  38. Don’t blame Cousins folks…BLAME the VIKINGS ineptness for NOT doing there due dilegence. Did’nt they see the tape when he was a Redskin? Cousins is just a healthy version of Sam Bradford with make tons $$$$ from the NFL.
    Cousins can console himself with the knowledge that he at least had a better year than Aaron Rodgers.
    _____________
    Yes, and the fact that it’s these shortsighted, “epic” goals that are really the only thing the Barneys truly care about.
    With the Wilfs and Spieldope being fully aware of this, there’s no real incentive to truly try and achieve any more than edging out the Packers.
    This is exactly why you still have an underachieving, lame duck head coach, fulfilling the string of his contract in what’s going to be another lost season. skoLOL!
  40. For all the hate being heaped on Cousins in the above posts, I would like to suggest it should be aimed at Spielman, that is where most of the responsibility lies. Spielman was fired by the Dolphins for a bunch of little reasons and one big one; he couldn’t find a QB to save his life. Now that just carries forward the Vikings.
    Franchise QB’s never change teams, teams find a way to sign them and keep them. If you are wondering why the Redskins let Cousins get away, look no further than the 2018 Vikings.
  41. Cousins is great at 1. moving the ball between the 20’s; 2. padding his stats in the fourth quarter; 3. spewing clichés and 4. making money. Cousins is not-so-great at 1. beating teams with winning records and 2. delivering in the clutch. That is the sum total of Cousins.
  42. For all the hate being heaped on Cousins in the above posts, I would like to suggest it should be aimed at Spielman, that is where most of the responsibility lies.     >>
    The Vikings roster > Your roster.
    That’s why he still has a job, where as the chairs at the green bay country club are simply rearranged every other year. Most owners would be more than happy to have the roster Spielman has put together. The QB is the hardest to find though, you are correct. At least Spielman didn’t put a horrible roster together year in and year out like Thompson/Guety have and depend on one player and the aid of the refs to qualify for the postseason. And who was Thompsons’ top aid again that advised him on the draft year after year that’s now your GM? Oh, yeah, Gutey. I’d almost feel sorry for Rodgers if he wasn’t such a prick, but maybe that’s why he’s so adored in green bay. He fits the persona perfectly.
    Kirk needs to do what Zimmer did, and just blame the whole thing on Tony.
    Cousins didn’t even outperform an injured Rodgers.
    ———-
    Please check the stats from their head to head match ups and consult a local mathematician, as numbers are clearly not your thing.
  45. Hey Kirk, if the season started tomorrow what should us fans expect?
    That you would play better, especially in crunch time? Or That you would lead the Vikings to the Superbowl?
    Remember we’re Vikings fans that your talking to.
  46. Don’t take my word for it. Check the season-ending quarterback index, ranking the effectiveness of each quarterback based on performance. It was written by Gregg Rosenthal on the official NFL site.
    Rodgers #5. Cousins #13.
    This, despite playing with a knee brace for eight games, playing through a hamstring injury for two more games, missing the last game in concussion protocol, and Cousins having the two best wide receivers to ever play the game.
    Good enough for me.
  47. Yeah that concussion in week 17 really mattered and was a difference maker in making for a losing season
  48. Cousins is a good QB. Fans overreact to the good and bad. Tom Brady wins a Super Bowl and played average and he is the GOAT. Cousins had no time. His best OL might have been a rookie RT. Elflein and Reiff were ok. The guards were awful, especially Remmers. There is still hope for the Vikings. They gave young stars on both sides of the ball.
  49. Sir, welcome to the crowd. I probably speak for lots of Vikings fans in saying that I have been frustrated with the Vikes my whole life. Should have won the dame thing two years ago only to lay an egg. In my opinion they have wasted lots of talent (Moss, Carter, Robert Smith, Peterson) to name a few. Lets stop saying how frustrated players are and please win the big one.
