Jim Harbaugh wants a Tom Brady statue at Michigan

Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh wants the university to recognize one of its own, Tom Brady.

Harbaugh said on his podcast that he thinks a Brady statue should be erected on campus.

“I think it’s time, don’t you, for a Tom Brady statue to be built right here,” Harbaugh said, via CFT. “Right in front of Schembechler Hall, or do you put it in the stadium? Where do you put the Tom Brady statue?”

When the greatest of all time played in your program, that’s something you celebrate, Harbaugh said.

“You’re synonymous now with Babe Ruth, with Michael Jordan. The university he attended should build a statue,” Harbaugh added.

Brady was a good quarterback at Michigan, but strictly based on his play in college he wouldn’t go down as one of the greatest players in the school’s history — in fact, he wouldn’t even be considered as great as Harbaugh, who was named the Big Ten’s MVP in 1986. But Brady has accomplished so much in the NFL that Harbaugh would like to see him immortalized in Ann Arbor.

  1. Why? To celebrate his stirring Citrus and Orange Bowl wins? He was 20-5 as a starter there with one league co-championship.

If they’re gonna a build statutes build them one of Charles Woodson. That guy was a winner

  2. How will that make all of the Michigan fans and alumni who were cheering for Drew Henson to beat out Brady feel? A statue seems a bit out of place there. The Krafts will put up something nice near the entrance of Gillette Stadium.

  3. There should be two statues, one to either side of the main entrance to their stadium. One would be young Brady, in his Michigan uniform. The other old Brady, wearing the Pats uni.

Sort of a Gates of Argonath setup…

  4. Oh God no! Statues will not motivate Tom Brady, calling him noodle arm motivates Tom Brady.

Please, for the sake of continuing the New England Patriots Dynasty, the greatest dynasty the NFL had and will ever see, do not celebrate Tom Brady, instead continue to lie about him. After all, he still has four fingers that need Super Bowl rings.

  5. A statue makes no sense at Michigan as his accomplishments there weren’t great. A statue outside of the Pats stadium is a no brainer.

  6. I think they can wait on the statue. Makes him seem really old if you do that. He still has plenty of gas in the tank

  7. I disagree with Jim Harbaugh. Tom Brady became the legend in Pro Football, I am sure the Krafts will be honoring him in a tasteful and respectful way.

  8. Jordan, Ruth and Gretzkey dont have the most rings but are all considered the GOATs, so why is Brady thought by some the best just because of rings?

  9. It’s a brilliant idea. Not only will TB’s methods inspire the football program but it will also help the academic programs as students all of sudden will ace all their final exams.

  10. Blame Lloyd Carr for the Henson fiasco. When recruiting Henson, his handlers requested that No other QB be recruited, Carr agreed, but when Henson left to play baseball, Michigan was left with no experienced backup……not only did Brady winthe starting job, but hotshot Henson left them high and dry.

  11. They might as well erect bronze statues of an airplane, a buffalo and a dolphin next to him also considering they were instrumental in Tom’s success. These three pathetic teams have been trash for far too long and nobody says a word. Not only do they routinely lose to NE, but they also lose to everyone else! Has a division ever in the history of the league ever had three teams in the same exact division perform so poorly for this long? Anyone? But yes, let’s continue to pretend the AFCE isn’t garbage.

He’s not the GOAT just because of rings. He’s won more than anyone regular season and post season and statistically he’s at or near the top of everything that matters

While the Patriots’ 86-24 record against the AFC East is staggering, their winning percentage (134-44, 0.753) against everyone else is the best in the NFL, while they have 25 more non-division victories than any other team.

New England’s record against eventual division winners (24-14) makes them the only team in the NFL with a winning record in this category. Against teams who eventually made the playoffs in a given season, the Patriots (60-33, 0.645) are the best in the league, with the Steelers at a not-so-close second with a 0.480 winning percentage.

Their success against teams who finished with a winning record (75-45, 0.625) is also an NFL-best mark, with the Steelers trailing by a considerable margin at a 0.440 winning percentage.

It’s settled then. The Patriots don’t just take care of business against the AFC East, but no team is even close to their level of success against teams outside their division.

  14. And look at the teams the Patriots beat OUTSIDE the division this season

    12-4 chiefs home
    12-4 cry away
    12 -4 chargers
    12-4 bears
    11-5 Texans
    10-6 colts
    8-7 Vikings
    13-3 rams

No other team came close to beating that many teams with a winning record

  15. To Flash 1287 at 9:23AM.I agree with you completely about the Pats away record.Outstanding.What was perplexing is that their 5 regular season losses were against teams that did NOT make the playoffs(I stand to be corrected). There were parts of the regular season their defense was in question and during playoffs and last 2 regular season games it was terrific.Same can be said for the offense which at times was not as dominant as in past years.
Seven will be heaven.Go Pats GO.

  16. He was far better in college that people remember. He was screwed over by a recruiting promise made to another QB.

  17. Hacksaw you are an idiot.

AFC east team have crappy records because they lose to the Patriots twice every year.

Interesting. The Dolphins, Bills and Jets have a combined record of 358 wins and 446 losses since the realignment of the divisions in 2002. That’s a total winning % of .445! Almost ONE HUNDRED games under .500! The AFCE is so ferocious! LOL.

  19. College football is about who has the best athletes and can dominate the ono-on-one matchups. Lately that has been limited to two schools. Pro football is more about scheme and about reading and reacting.

In that Brady has no peer.

  20. A college football program can’t build a statue for a guy it was dumb enough to bench in the second quarter of games just for a young local favorite athlete. Michigan lost a big game because of sitting Brad down that way.

  21. The Patriots can thank the Yankees for drafting Drew Henson and forcing Michigan’s hand. They had to bench Brady and hand the starting gig to him to keep him from going to baseball. Brady always had the talent to go higher than the 6th round but he got screwed that year.

  22. I agree with Harbaugh. I also believe the statue could be placed anywhere on campus, not necessarily by the football stadium. Tom is a super successful person who went to Michigan. It doesn’t matter if he invented something or whatever. He’s a Michigan guy. He came through those doors and out into the world and became super successful. Maybe he wasn’t as great a college football player because he was spending so much time in the classroom, preparing for life. Just listen to him when he talks. He’s a well educated man. He represents the University well. He doesn’t even demand as much money as the other QB’s around the league because he knows he’s smart enough to invest his money and still come out ok. That also allows his organization to be more successful. That’s what a great education does. That’s why the NFL likes the players to complete at least 3 years of college. It’s in the kid’s best interest. Most of the players aren’t going to earn millions playing pro football. But that education will allow you to be able to take care of yourself. I’m sure Brady would be successful without football. Heck, build two statues.

  23. While I feel statues are stupid to honor one person……the intended message should be that you can be a good athlete and student here…..be selected much later than others and strive to be the best for years…..and become the best ever!

I think this generation of whining, lost, not particularly motivated young adults need to see what can be accomplished with hard work, drive and determination.

  24. On the one hand just looking at it from the lenses of college athletics it’s a silly idea. Brady didn’t do anything at Michigan that’s deserving of a statue. Which is not to say he wasn’t a good player there but when I think statue I think legendary player. His college career isn’t even worth being inducted into Michigan Football’s hall of fame.

On the other hand alumni from other fields who graduate and do great things are honored all the time even if they may have been average students while studying there. So looking at it like that maybe it’s not that crazy.

Check out the AFCSouth’s record without the Colts during Manning’s time there. Which included a first year Texans team that lost to the Colts 26 straight times. Also check out the NFC West’s record. Seattle won the division at 7-9.
The reason the Jets, Bills, and Dolphins stink, is because they have to build their teams to beat the Pats, and it is tough to do.
Only twice in Brady’s tenure have the Pats swept the division.
And finally, if you want to make some money, bet against a team that beats the Pats the following week. I have made a ton of money doing so.

  26. Lowell Carr caved to the alumni and had the hotshot freshmen Henson and the veteran Brady split playing time. TB12, although not the QB he turned out to be in the pros, usually ended up bailing out the novice. What ever happened to Henson and Brady. Henson never made it in either baseball OF football. Brady G.O.A.T.

He’s right though. The AFC East has been amazingly terrible for 20 years. You can’t even say that about “Peyton’s division” because the the Jaguars and Titans were both pretty dang good for most of Peyton’s career. Even the Texans turned it around after the expansion start.

With the NFC West, that was 1 year not 20, so not sure your point.

Also, your reasoning for why the AFCE is terrible doesn’t make sense. The Bengals, Ravens and Browns have been chasing a dominant Steelers team for year…yet it hasn’t stopped the Bengals and Ravens from multiple division titles and a couple rings for the Ravens. The AFCE is just terrible.

Vs NE 31 teams are terrible. What exactly is the point? Even if they give NE a free pass to the AFCCG, they still are better, 9 out of 18 times, than every other team you think is from such a tough division.Records don’t matter. Who’s standing at the end, that matters.

  30. Harbaugh isn’t the smartest of people, so will the statue of Brady be in a Patriot uniform? The guy started one year at Michigan and was decent and that’s being nice.

  31. It only stands to reason that if there was to be a Brady statute at Gillette, then Belichick should have one right beside it. Forget Michigan. I like Harbaugh’s idea, but Drew Henson kind of ruins it.

  32. New England, not U Mich, is where Tom Brady will get a statue. Tom Brady did not do much for his alma mater. No national champion won. No nothing. His accomplishments were made at New England.

    —————————————————————————–

Tom Brady started every game his Junior and Senior seasons at Michigan. That is two years, not one. Drew Henson was never the Michigan starter while Brady was at Michigan. Lloyd Carr kept on giving Henson playing time, because he was the local boosters, even though Brady was better. Eventually, during Brady’s Senior season, Carr stopped with his ‘platooning,’ and stayed with Brady, because there was no doubt who was the better QB.

Brady was a very good college QB, not just a ‘decent one.’ Fortunately for Brady, and fortunately for Patriots nation, Tom Brady did not have a good combine, and did not look good in boxers, so he was still there in the sixth round for the Pats to make the greatest, albeit somewhat lucky, draft pick of all-time.

And the rest is the continuing legacy of Tom Brady, the Greatest NFL Player of All-Time.

  34. I love Jim Harbaugh. He’s all in on Michigan. He’s always on the recruiting trail, trying to compete with the other schools. Every school takes advantage of whatever resources they have available, including alumni. Every coach doesn’t have an alum named Tom Brady. Jim Harbaugh does, and he plans on taking advantage of that. Who in their right mind wouldn’t? M GO BLUE!!!

  35. They might as well erect bronze statues of an airplane, a buffalo and a dolphin next to him also considering they were instrumental in Tom’s success. These three pathetic teams have been trash for far too long and nobody says a word.

People whine about it constantly. All the time.

It would be a much more compelling complaint if the Patriots weren’t 30-10 in the playoffs during the Brady/Belichick era. That’s a .750 winning percentage, equivalent to going 12-4 during a 16 game regular season, against the other top teams in the league, over an 18 year period in which they’ve also played more games than anyone else.

People looking for excuses, reasons to denigrate. Understandable. But they’re all wrong. The simple fact is that Belichick understands the game in a way that few others do, and is willing to make the best football decision for the team instead being swayed by PR, and Brady is a great player, who has been willing to work with the team to allow them to put a good roster together every year rather than insisting on top dollar. They have been the best organization in the league, by far, in the salary cap era.

It won’t last forever. But the excuse-making is just silly, and desperate, and more than a little bit pathetic…

    —————————————–

That’s so cute. I particularly like that of the 88 losses below .500 the Phins, Bills & Jets you conveniently leave out during that time period 83 of them were to New England. Just curious, when you were doing your analysis, with losses to their top team removed from the equation how many other divisions were only 5 games under .500?

First and foremost teams are built to win their divisions. Because of New England’s stranglehold on the top spot the other teams are constantly blowing it up every few years in an effort to find a formula to dethrone them. The Pats are the reason the other teams in the AFCE can’t get over. No doubt they would appreciate it if the rest of the league gave them more help with the heavy lifting cause the rest of them losing at a .762 regular season and .750 post season clip really isn’t cutting it.

  38. Why do you want a statue for a backup quarterback at Michigan? Celebrate Brady’s accomplishments where they happened, in Boston.

Oh boo hoo. Nine times to the SB, six times winning it. Beat the other divisions on the way there every time. Brady himself has more playoff wins, playing the top teams from each division, than 28 of the 32 teams have in their histories.
