Patriots lose defensive line coach to Kansas City

Getty Images

The Chiefs fired their defensive coordinator after losing to the Patriots, and now the Chiefs will be taking a defensive coach from the Patriots.

Patriots defensive line coach Brendan Daly will join the Chiefs’ staff, the Boston Globe reports.

Daly has been with the Patriots since 2014. Presumably his contract expired after the Super Bowl; it seems unlikely the Patriots would have allowed him to walk to a fellow AFC contender if they had the contractual ability to stop him.

Daly previously worked for new Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo when Spagnuolo was head coach of the Rams, so it’s unsurprising that the Chiefs would want to bring Daly on board.

The Patriots have also lost their top defensive assistant, Brian Flores, who is becoming the Dolphins’ head coach. Flores took assistants Josh Boyer, Chad O’Shea and Jerry Schuplinski with him, so Bill Belichick has quite a few vacancies on his staff now, not that Belichick has ever struggled to succeed no matter which assistants come and go.

  1. Every year, the Patriots lose coaches and key players. It’s always been, “Next man up!” We know it’s going to end one day and idiots like Kellerman, Parker, Felger, and Tanguay will finally claim they were correct. Of course, they’ve been predicting the end for about 10 years…

    7-UP next…

  2. Good pickup. The Chiefs Oline said they were surprised at how physical the Patriots came out to start the AFC Championship game.

Maybe he’ll bring that aggressiveness to the Chiefs dline.

I think you would find that many Pats fans were surprised at how aggressive the Pats defense was in the post-season. We had not seen that kind of consistent aggressiveness with blitzes all year or, really, in years. To the Chiefs credit, they were able to adjust in the 2nd half of the AFC Championship; but the Chargers and Rams did not have an athletic enough QB to make similar adjustments.

Why do the Patriots have the same winning % against the rest of the league as they do in their division. Keep trying to explain away greatness. Brady has a 30-10 record in the PLAYOFFS for crying out loud!!!!

  6. A bit of a brain drain, but they still have Belichick and M cDaniels on offense. I like the Shiano hire on D.

Patriots may get 6 wins (they mostly lose at least one), what about the other 10 games? What about the teams they play in the playoffs and they make it to the superbowl? Not so easy to beat that team. I have to admit, they are special.

In truth, the Patriots would win any division they would be in because their record outside of the division has been better than it has been in the division. Don’t let the truth throw you for a loop though. Here’s something for you to think about. One of the reasons the AFC East has been so bad is because of the Patriots dominance and that the other teams keep starting over and firing GMs and coaches. The Patriots have had a lot to do with that.

  9. Belichick does not strike me as someone who puts anything ahead of the team so I sure that he has paid his their dues. Belichick’s son Steve, the safeties coach, may be the only defensive holdover.

  10. Two changes are obvious, Bret Bielema has been working with the DL this year. Greg Schiano is a db coach besides being a defensive coordinator. Do you know who the KC DL coach Daly will be replacing? Britt Reid. I don’t think BB will have a difficult time finding replacements for the coaches they lost. He has a pipeline of coaches on the team that have been trained and others that would want to coach with him. Cameron Achord and Atif Austin were hired last year. Achord coached all offensive positions except wr at the college level. Austin previously coached wrs at the college level. In addition both coached ST at the college level.

  11. When these fired coaches over the years go to NE, then look great & get “stolen, to follow that up by looking mediocre again, it only shows you who & how great the real genius is.
Ever recently fired assistant better be clawing to get up to the northeast. It’ll only help extend their NFL coaching career or potentially get them promoted to the big chair.

  12. The Chiefs’ defense will still be awful next season. Count on it. You have that, and Andy Reid’s total ineptitude when it comes to clock management and knowing when or when not to use a time out. The team is going nowhere. Now, teams will also have plenty of film on Mahomes.

Whatever you need to tell yourself, I guess.

If I am Gaze or Flores I would stop chasing the Pats and vow to win the rest of the division. If you can go 4-2 in the division and be 1-2 games over 500 the rest of the way you have a good shot at a wild card spot.

In the last 5 years the non-divisions winners in the AFCE have won 104 games.

In the last 5 years the non-divisions winners in the NFCS have won 103 games.

In the last 5 years the non-divisions winners in the AFCN have won 98 games.

In the last 5 years the non-divisions winners in the AFCW have won 111 games.

In the last 5 years the non-divisions winners in the NFCE have won 103 games.

Every division you name has seen the 3 non-divisional winners win less than those of the AFCE over that time, except the AFCW, which won 1.4 more games per year than the AFCE teams.

And none of those divisions had to play the team that went to 4 SBs and won three of them over that 5 year span, a half dozen times each year.

The reality is that the Pats have won about as often in playoff games as they have against the AFCE.

See how much clearer things are when you look at the actual facts instead of just making crap up?

  15. Explain to us Patriots fans how easy the “playoff division” they play in every year is.This year it was SD,KC and LA. But yeah you’re right. Brady has more playoff wins than all but two NFL teams.. Yawn you haters bore me.

  16. Another guy simply not welcome back ever to the organization.

Lots of bridges being burned by some big ego assistants.

You just up and leave to a conf rival as a lateral move.

    Wow

I agree, but go to a different conference at least.

This whole annoying afc poaching aspect is unprofessional an annoying.

I wish nothing but ill will towards the scumbag teams doing it and
thinking they are getting a piece of bb along the way.

Well, it was actually LA, KC and LA. But you’re right, and I seem to remember plenty of people tipping the Patriots to lose each and every one of those matchups. Or were they just desperately hoping that someone, anyone would stop the juggernaut?

  19. His contract was due to expire – if Belichick had wanted to keep him it would’ve been extended before now. This was not down to the lure of a promotion, as Daly will be doing the same job for Chiefs. Nor was it a steal. Belichick has never fired an NE assistant – think about that, 18yrs – he just lets contracts expire. Daly maybe wanted out if he thought he hit a glass ceiling, or for a raise, yes of course, but don’t fool yourselves into thinking NE wouldn’t have matched it to stop him going to a rival if they thought him uber-worthwhile.

  20. It’s Belichick’s show. He runs the offense and the defense. Most coaches that leave end up getting fired by their new team, yet the Patriots keep winning. I know he has Brady, but a lot of coaches would screw that up too. Heck, Brady went in the 6th round, so a lot of coaches who are looking for athletic characteristics in a QB, probably would have cut Brady years ago.

  21. “When Brady retires, even the Kraft’s will leave.”

Lolz Chippy did you type that while on your knees praying? Because you’re dreaming and praying, that’s all. Robert has clearly groomed his son Jonathan to take over and its a rare case of an owner’s child being just as driven to win championships as his old man instead of just collecting huge TV checks and not caring about anything else.

Not to mention, sure they’re going to give up a multi billion dollar business just because a player retires. SMH

    ————————————-

I love how people talk about “getting film” on Mahomes like it’s going to change anything. It’s obviously a clueless racial thing, because people just see his skin color and automatically think of RG3 or Kaepernick running some one year wonder gimmick offense. That’s not what this is at all. 5,100 yards and 50 TD isn’t some random season that you luck into.

I’ve got news for you, it doesn’t matter how much film people get on Mahomes. He’s got the mind of Manning, the arm of Marino, the scrambling ability of Steve Young and the competitiveness of Brady. All the film in the world isn’t going to matter. He is going to dominate the league for 15+ years.

As for the team “going nowhere,” that’s just more hogwash considering they are already the odds on favorites to win the Super Bowl next year. It would seem you genuinely have no idea what you’re talking about.

  23. Regarding Mahomes. Great player, but until he starts leading his teams on methodical touchdown drives, he will not win a SuperBowl. When you depend on world class speedsters, blown coverages and broken plays to win – it will catch up to you.

Seriously? Mahomes put up 50 TD’s this year and you are harping about methodical touchdown drives? News flash for you the Chiefs led the league in scoring also. You just won the internet for the dumbest comment of the year and it’s only the second week of February.

  26. Methodical drives? Like the ones needed to tie to the Ravens to bear them in OT? Or to go ahead of the Rams, after down 11? Or the drives against the Pats, in the AFC championship game after they were down 17-0…

Given they have gone all the way to the Superbowl 9 times over that period, always have one of the winninest seasons plus go so deep in the playoffs you have to admit they have been ruling all those other divisions too.

Watch out Brady. Mahomes is already accumulating haters faster than you did.

  30. As long as NE has Bill Belichick they will be fine no matter who leaves. I’m not even a Pats fan but I can say that he is the greatest HC in today’s NFL. He is able to evaluate talent for players and coaches and elevate them to a higher level. The man is a football HC God & genius.

  31. Although the D line certainly came up huge in the playoffs and pucked up speed going into the SB, its still was not one of the teams dominant areas the padt few years. The pass rush has actually been a long term frustration to me. Im not sure if that was personel or D line coaching over that period. I just know it wasnt one of their strength areas.

  32. Trying to talk sense into people about how the Patriots fair against the AFC East in comparison to the rest of the NFL, and educate them on the reality of where the AFC East actually fits versus the other divisions (I believe they are second or third in win percentage…and yes the Pats are in the division, but they also lay a lot of losses on the other teams in the division so it balances out)…..is futile. It’s like talking to Alexandria Occasional-Cortex about why you can’t plug an extension cord into itself and have free “green” energy.

We’re all just sick of the Patriots. We don’t care. Go away.

Even people who are related to Patriot employees are sick of the Patriots. They have to create ridiculous underdog roles to make their own players care. It’s just boring to everyone who doesn’t live in Boston. And I would guess it’s even boring to some of their own fans at this point.

He’s also 0-2 against Brady and Belichick, lost to the LA Rams playoff team, lost to the LA Chargers playoff team, lost to the Seattle Seahawks playoff team, was shut out in the 1st half in his own stadium in the AFC championship with negative passing yards. Cam Newton also won an MVP award. Let’s not hype up potential one-hit-wonders. He started his career in the softest era of professional football. Brady and Peyton in their prime would be throwing up 60 touchdown passes regularly.

better check the facts dude. pats have same winning percentage against your so-called competitive divisions. put em in any division you want and they make the competition look weak and the excuse makers remain unencumbered by the thought process.

  37. People seem to forget that the Patriots have strict contract agreements with their Staff. Once they leave New England for another Team they are forbidden to replicate success.
