Florida showed Todd Grantham the money to get him to spurn the Bengals

For the players, college football is amateur athletics. But for the coaches, amateur football can pay every bit as well as professional football.

In some cases, even better: Todd Grantham has decided to remain the defensive coordinator at Florida after the Gators made him a very competitive financial offer to turn down an offer to become the defensive coordinator of the Bengals.

The University of Florida announced that it extended Grantham’s contract through 2022 and increased his salary to $1.8 million a year, placing Grantham among the five highest-paid defensive coordinators in college football.

There’s no word on what the Bengals were offering him, but suffice to say Grantham will make a salary at Florida that’s very competitive with what NFL assistant coaches get paid.

It’s well-known in football circles that the highest-paid head coaches in college football make salaries comparable to what NFL coaches make. But all that money in college football is increasingly trickling down to the assistant coaches as well. The players aren’t paid, but the coaches are getting rich.

  1. Wow. Being a UF booster and fan just became even more expensive. Better start winning 2-3 more games a year.

  2. If Saban, Sweeney, Meyer and lets say for the heck of it, Belichick decided to take jobs at one of the Big East schools (St Johns, Providence, Seton Hall, Georgetown etc) guess who would be playing for the National title every year?

Wouldn’t be Clemson, Ohio State and Alabama. The bonus is the Jets would bury the Patriots (but Providence college would be cool).

Point is: Absurd to pay only but a handful of coaches big money. Only a handful are consistently in the mix every year.

When was Florida any good? I know, Urban ‘look the other way’ Meyer but the point is…

PS: If I were Belichick I WOULD take on Providence College. What a way to go out…

    Steve Spurrier says hello

  4. Someone brought up pursuing John Fox in another thread and there’s something to be said in that. There’s talent on that squad and signing Fox would send a serious message not just to the players but to the other teams in the division that the Bengals are to be reckoned with.

  5. With how cheap the Bengals are if I were him I’d stay at Florida too. And everyone wonders why Marvin Lewis never won a playoff game.

No one wonders why Marvin Lewis never won a playoff game. He didn’t win a playoff game because he had undisciplined teams, and he’s a slightly above .500 NFL head coach. Lewis lost playoff games with Jay Gruden (current head coach of the Washington Redskins) and Mike Zimmer (current head coach of the Minnesota Vikings) as coordinators. So what are you talking about?

If BB went anywhere at the NCAA level, he’d go to Navy.

  8. “Where is the outrage like when McDaniels decided to what was best for his family and feel better about a career move?”
    _____________

Well, the Bengals didn’t already have a press conference introducing Grantham setup when he changed his mind. McDaniels went past the “if you’re going to change your mind you need to do it now” stage. That’s why people gave him a hard time because he went back on his word.

  9. I meant the last time. I know Spurrier was good at UF. But what did he do at SC or in DC?

The only respect I have for anything in that state is some of the JUCO baseball teams (Indian River, the 3 Miamai’s, etc), FSU, UF, Miami and Florida Southern. FIU has been decent over the years.

    Football is gone in Florida.

FWIW I went to one of those schools and played in the CWS.

  10. Football is gone in Florida.

There were 23 players from the state of Florida drafted in 2018, 24 in 2017. No single state comes close to those numbers.

  11. “Football is gone in Florida”
    ___________

Florida high schools produce more college players than any other state.

“FWIW I went to one of those schools and played in the CWS”
    ___________

    No, you didn’t.

i thought you asked when florida was any good besides Meyer? The question got answered now the focus is when was spurrier any good at usc or washington? ok well he took a middling USC and had them in to the top ten for a few years and beat number 1 alabama. And florida finished in the top ten this year so not sure what the point is. Oh and never ever question the HBC !!!

  13. Geez. Anyone who knows anything about baseball in the state of Florida, knows I mentioned the best programs over the past 40 years. Why would I make up the CWS? Do you even know what it is? I can name 20 major leaguers off the top of my head. 5 from FSU. 3 from UF. 3 from USF. 2 from St Leo, 1 from Florida Southern, 2 from St Pete JC. 3 from Valencia JC. 2 from Eckerd College. 4 from the U. That’s 24. I could go on. I remember who I pitched against because some guys stand out and you can kind of tell.

My apologies to all the football fans in Florida. I meant college football as far as being ranked in the top 10.

High school football, the place is 2nd to none. Again, I should have been more specific.

PS: There was a time it was western PA and Texas but we all know Florida HS FB truly is 2nd to none. Again, I should have explained that better…

  14. The players aren’t paid
    ========================================

Yes they are. They’re paid for room, board and tuition and the minimum.
