Doug Williams: We need to find somebody to mix in at quarterback

Alex Smith‘s wife shared photos of her husband taking some time out of his own recovery from a broken leg by visiting with wounded soldiers at the Center for the Intrepid last week and those snapshots showed that Smith is still wearing an external fixator over his cast.

That’s further sign that his chances of playing for Washington this season aren’t looking great. Running back Chris Thompson acknowledged as much recently, but senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams wasn’t willing to count Smith out during a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Williams is aware that no one can rule Smith in either and that means the team has to be prepared with other options at quarterback. Colt McCoy is on the roster and on track to return from a less severe break in his leg, but Williams said the team will be adding others.

“It’s our job in the personnel department to find somebody who can play,” Williams said. “Thank God we have Colt coming back from an injury. We just gotta find somebody to mix in there and we know we gotta have that guy, but we gotta build around whoever it is. I think that’s the most important thing.”

With less than a month to go before the new league year, hints about the route Williams and company will take to flesh out the quarterback room could start appearing soon.

  1. Mix in? No they need to find a true franchise QB which they probably won’t do anytime soon

  2. Dan Snyder (and Bruce Allen) would never sign Kaepernick. The Redskins don’t have a lot of cap space, so any pricey QB is out. They got burned so bad on the Alex Smith trade, that they probably aren’t doing any trades. So, they’ll roll with Colt McCoy, a bottom of the barrel free agent, and a draft pick.

2019 isn’t going to be pretty for the Redskins.

  3. Oh goodie… the Skins will open the season with that All Star QB Colt McCoy! Another year without making the playoffs…. Unless…. DRAFT SOMEBODY, and let Doug Williams coach him up. Clearly Gruden can’t.

  4. Doug Williams has become nothing but Bruce Allen’s pet. There was another word for it but I want to be politically correct.

Bruce Allen hides behind the doors while the bullets are flying and sends Doug Williams out with his pre-rehearsed company lines. Poor Doug knows if he stands up to Bruce or Snyder he would get whipped and no longer have a paycheck. It’s sad what men will submit to for the sake of money.

Dan Snyder and Bruce Allen are lost souls who will wander around in the Darkness with Hitler and mass murderers after their lifetimes.

  5. The Redskins one of the few organizations with an African American in a senior executive position…They are also one of the few sports organizations that still honors Native Americans…Were also gonna tank…then draft Tua…! And continue our legacy of inclusion…!!! Hail…!

  6. Add Colon and bring back the Great Gimmick. You’ll have at least 2/3rds of a QB. ROFL.

  7. They’re going to trade a first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh plus a first and a third next year for the right to pay Dalton, Tannehill, Keenum, Foles, and Bortles a combined $127M per season.

You know, if you believe the rumors and all

  8. I think we can ALL see where this is heading. Very unliked organization w/an unlikable team president and a subpar front office. The only question is if the “QB” they bring in would have any issues w/the team name? I’m thinking probably not because it’s all about money for him anyways.

  9. The amount of money they have wrapped up in Smith over the next two years is going to hamstring their ability to do anything. This could change the way these deals are done.

What’s in the water when 2 qbs have broken bones in the same season….

How about getting a decent offensive line that can keep a QB out of the hospital?

  11. No disrespect to Doug Williams but he makes it sound like he and the Redskins are in panic mode.

They should be in panic mode. They’re on the hook for $40M+ over the next two seasons for a QB that may never play again. Hard to win in the NFL with a situation like that.

  12. Alex Smith should be the bigger person in this situation and just retire. Saving Washington millions but because that’s what was agreed on in his contract, he will continue to rob this team. That type of language and guarantee shouldn’t be allowed to cash strap a team this way.

Alex Smith would be a fool to do that and he’s no fool. The Redskins signed him to a guaranteed contract. Everyone party to that contract understood the risks that entailed. Smith’s career might be over so that remainder of the contract is his compensation for that job related injury.

The Redskins front office totally screwed up (AGAIN). They cash strapped themselves. The team deserves to suffer the consequences. It’s just a pity that the fans are made to suffer from Snyder/Allen’s gross incompetence.

That’s what happens when both starting OGs suffer season-ending injuries, one of whom was one of the top OGs in the League, followed by both backup OGs suffering season-ending injuries.
