Kirk Cousins draws strong reaction to tweet about Miami

The first year of quarterback Kirk Cousins‘ run with the Vikings was not as successful as hoped for player or team, but there’s been no sign that he won’t be back for the fully guaranteed remainder of his three-year deal.

Some Vikings fans appeared ready to show Cousins the door after a social media post on Monday night, however. Cousins is apparently spending some time in Miami and he expressed some warm feelings about the warm weather by referencing LeBron James’ decision to sign with the Heat.

As the replies to that tweet show, such musings did not go over well with those back in Minnesota.

Some might compare Cousins’ tweet with Ron Burgundy’s teleprompter-prompted faux pas about San Diego, so it made sense that the quarterback followed up with an Anchorman reference in another tweet a short time later. He stayed away from posting the rest of the night and enjoying Miami without sharing his thoughts with the world was probably for the best.

  1. Oh noooo…he found out Miami has beautiful weather and commented about it and why a person would move/play there. America over analyzing every statement since 2016.

  2. So he likes Miami and people are flipping out? Snowflakes. What he needs to do in his off time is hire a strength coach for his hands so he learns how not to fumble 18 times a season! Kirk you’re embarrassing yourself with those stats more than your ill-timed tone deaf tweets. Also have someone teach you how to grill and move out of your in-laws basement!

  3. I am so glad the Vikings are stuck with this guy. I feel bad for the legitimate Viking fans, but their trolls certainly deserve him. Apparently, it WAS all about the money.

  4. I’ve never been to Miami. I’ve lived in Milwaukee most of my life, been to Cleveland many times, and Minneapolis several times.

    Kirk isn’t wrong.

  5. What else did he tweet? I immediately regret this decision, or, discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it Miami, which of course in German means ‘a whale’s vagina.’

  6. Vikings fans give the guy a break. He’s not our first guy to have a tough season & he wont be the last. All of you keyboard tuff guys need to give it rest. How would you feel if he was a close friend, would you treat him this way. He’s a human being doing his best in sports entertainment. Save some of your grief for a coach that didnt direct the GM to go out & get more and better offensive linemen.

  7. It’s pretty clear that Cousins’ lacks awareness both on and off the field .After the season he had the last place he needs to be is on social media making stupid comments .Miinesota is finding out why Washington let him go he’s a stat sheet hero but lacks leadership and chokes in must win situations .

  8. I don’t know how much I’d read into that regarding the Dolphins. It was 77º when he posted that tweet and it was 8 PM during the middle of February. Despite the jokes about Florida, there are literally hundreds of current and retired athletes who live here and it’s not just for the weather. South Florida is a pretty good place to live.

  9. Anyone who has lived in Minnesota understands that it sucks in wintertime… well, Summertime also… But it’s the adverse climate that makes them tough as nails. Kirk is a tough guy and can afford a good furnace/central air unit. Why would anyone want to go golfing in February? when you could be sitting in a 9′ x 15′ box with 2 other guys, Drinking Schnapps and listening sports radio… Well ok, every Minnesotan shares Kirk’s view of wanting to be somewhere else other than Minnesota in February, but has the good sense to keep it to themselves.

  10. Born and raised in MN, moved away long ago to escape the winters, and couldn’t agree more with Kirk. Well, except for the Miami part…

  11. “The first year of quarterback Kirk Cousins‘ run with the Vikings was not as successful as hoped”

–Anyone outside of Minnesota could’ve told you that was going to happen.

  12. Yeah well Vikings fans in general are a bit annoyed at kirk cousins. When you take top 5 QB money you will be expected to play that way. His press conference after missing the playoffs said all I need to hear. Dont like him, wont unless he wins us a superbowl.

  13. Sooo… Cousins isn’t from Cleveland and there is zero indication that he’s a Cavaliers fan. What the heck was he mad about? Is this just inartful gaslighting? Also, if this were a “diva” WR, fans all over the league would be shredding this guy for trying to Twitter his way out of another gig. Aren’t the Vikings glad they broke the bank for Corporal Kirk?

  14. Sounds like fans are a bunch of sensitive little ninnies to me. I dont care where youre from, when you first get to DT Miami or Gables, you DO realize within a few minutes all the beautiful women walking around. It’s just beautiful scenery in general. Just an innocent comment, people need to get a life

  15. What, is Minnesota identifying as a temperate ocean-side state with loads of beautiful beaches now? How dare he bat his eyelashes at Miami!

  16. Im born and raised in Minnesota and I do love it here but i was in Florida for a week and when I had to come home i questioned why I live here. As I write this it is 10 below zero and abother 6 to 10 inces of snow is on the way.

  17. He’s *hinting* that he wants to play for the Dolphins. Otherwise, why not just say you’re enjoying a vacation or something? I wouldn’t want this guy on my team.

    ####################
Yes, but to his dumb rich face instead of online.

  19. Minnesota is great in the summer but from Oct – end of April it’s winter. Who in their right mind wouldn’t like Miami’s weather. Have the people over 60 who live in MN only live there in the summer and FL the rest of the year. Hypocrites. The chicks in GB are actually Hippo’s.

  20. Made up story. I live in Mpls and this is not in the paper or on sports talk radio. No one is talking about it….much less outraged. Matter of fact, first I’ve heard about it.

And…us Minnesotans know better than anyone that everywhere has better weather than us! Enjoy it! That’s why we all snowbird down to Florida or AZ every winter.

  21. I listened all last year while the Barneys crowed about some nonsense stat about Aaron Rodgers’ record while trailing in the 4th Qt. against .500 teams like it was some kind of serious QB character flaw.
And now, the Vikings have thrown elite money at a QB that struggles to even beat .500 teams.

What’s even funnier though, is the fact that Cousins is so disillusioned with Loserville, he’s angling for the open QB spot in Miami.
This is so Viking-esque, you couldn’t even make it up if you tried.
    Priceless!

  22. “He only said the same thing any MN mudduck would say after getting off the plane from Minneapolis to Miami.”

You are actually right. You see, we have real winter here filled with nightly sub zeroe temps. Not like the “winter” they have in green bay or Chicago where the temps hover around 32. Or even like the Bermuda of Michigan that Kirk is used to.

  23. Vikings fans are way too touchy. The guy likes Miami when it is ten below zero in Minneapolis. That’s not a surprise.

  24. “BooHoo, my quarterback doesn’t pray towards Valhalla during the offseason like I do!”

  25. Not a fan of Cousins or the queens but my god how in the hell do you get after a guy for posting that? He leaves negative forty degrees at night & ten degrees for the daytime highs to spend an off season where it’s windchill +75 at night & ninety during the day?
Only the fans of a team that has NEVER won anything make something of it…….

  26. He’s just trying to fit in in Minnesota!

  27. So flashpatton,

Because he’s rich makes it okay to be rude, nasty, inconsiderate & disrespectful? What a good friend you must be to have?

  28. He plays in an indoor stadium. Perfect temp, no humidity with scantily clad cheerleaders in view. It’s better than South Beach.

  29. Brady has more money than god, a super model wife that makes him look like a pauper, and plays in bone chilling cold and high winds and he can’ wait for next season despite six super bowl wins.

  30. He is our quarterback so get over it. If you dont like him then don’t watch this yr. Either get behind him or find a new team. I support my team if they go 16-0 or 0-16. Gotta love all the fair weather fans.

  31. Precisely what everybody thinks when they step off a plane after being in Minny during Jan/Feb!

    Non story! LOL

  32. For those of you who believe Cousins was merely commenting on the terrific weather in Miami, I’m afraid you’ve got your heads buried a bit deep in the snow.
You have to be able to read between the lines.
In this day and age of player tampering, Cousins went out of his way to mention another player who changed teams and the fact he understood his motivations.
He’s clearly sending a signal to the Dolphins that he’s unhappy with his current situation and would welcome a trade.
The Dolphins, in need of a starting caliber quarterback are going to be exploring all avenues to obtain one.
This is quite obvious to anyone that’s willing to look beyond their Molson Ice and disgusting plate of Lutefisk.
Otherwise, he’d just merely comment on the terrific weather down in Miami.

  33. This just in….Miami has a nicer climate than Minnesota. Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins has traveled to Miami and made a comment on Twitter about how nice the weather is. Head’s exploding in Minnesota…film at 11. Slow news day in the NFL.

    1. Cousins is from Michigan and part of the reason he came to Minnesota is because he is a Midwest guy who wants to raise his family here.
    2. Molson Ice is terrible and nobody in Minnesota drinks it. We aren’t Canadians.
    3. Lutefisk is delicious!!

  35. You could literally do this story after every tweet he makes. No matter what he says, a bunch of losers are going to make senseless comments because they’re mad he didn’t single-handedly take his team to the Super Bowl.

  36. Cousins drives his grandma’s van. He’s hardly a South Beach guy. Feel free to knock his play but he has his head screwed on right.

Why people want to question the motives of guys, with positive track records, who work in one of our country’s only true meritocracies is just odd.

  37. Kirk’s comment had nothing to do with the weather! Kirk was clearly thinking about what Lebron James did to Cleveland when he took his talents to South Beach. But Kirk Cousins has no talents to take to South Beach beside the Vikings bass could only hope and pray that Kirk wants out his contract… Because they are stuck with the worst free agent signing n the history of the NFL. The Viking go some 13-3 to 7-8-1, they go from one game away from the Super Bowl to not even making the playoffs. And it’s not going to get any better next season because their division could be the best and strongest in football…

  38. Well when you think about the difference in weather between Minnesota in February and Miami in February then I certainly understand his tweet. He said NOTHING about the Dolphins. This was about weather. People find a reason to get upset about everything now.

  39. “How dare anyone out there make fun of Kirk after all he has been through.!
He lost his aunt, he went through a divorce. He had two freaking kids.
His husband turned out to be a user, a cheater, and now he’s going through a custody battle. All you people care about is… readers and making money off of her.
HE’S A HUMAN! (ah! ooh!) What you don’t realize is that Kirk is making you all this money and all you do is write a bunch of crap about him.
He hasn’t performed on stage in years. His song is called “Give Me More” for a reason because all you people want is MORE! MORE-MORE, MORE: MORE!.
LEAVE HIM ALONE! You are lucky he even performed for you!
    LEAVE KIRK ALONE!…Please.
Perez Hilton talked about professionalism and said if Kirk was a professional he would’ve pulled it off no matter what.
Speaking of professionalism, when is it professional to publicly bash someone who is going through a hard time.
    Leave Kirk Alone Please!
Leave Kirk Cousins alone! Right now! I mean it!
Anyone that has a problem with him you deal with me, because he is not well right now.
    LEAVE HIM ALONE!

  40. Oh, how precious!
The Heidis are so dumb, they can’t even tell when their star player’s trolling them looking for greener pastures down south.

  41. Not sure how they know that the people responding were Vikings fans at all but okay it makes the story better. A lot of people enjoy the warmer weather to the cold. Kirk is no different it seems.

  43. Can we get this straight please? I have seen multiple posts on here referring to KURT Cousins. KURT…IT’S KIRK. NOT KURT. To those of you who have commented on KURT Cousins,
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I surfed back and watched that presser. Other than the annoying swaying he does while talking what exactly did he say that would cause you not to like him? I mean, he pretty much owed up to everything that went wrong…both in that game and through the 2018 season. Didn’t throw any of his teammates or coaches under the bus. And no, I didn’t buy the line about the thing with Adam Thielen on the sideline being a good thing, but I don’t know him, or how he thinks. Whatever.

Where we do agree is your statement about Cousins taking top 5 money and playing well under that level. That’s the real issue. Some dumb tweet in Miami has little bearing on anything, but I can see how some freezing Minnesota natives might not want to hear it. From him.

  45. Why tweet? It is so often misunderstood. Does the world need to know your every thought Donald, er I mean Kirk?

Why shouldn’t Lion fans have the right to troll Viking fans, their respective teams have won the same number of Super Bowls.
As for Kirk, save your tweets and your breath.
As brainless as Dolphin management has been in the past, even they’re not as dumb to give a lackluster QB such a big guaranteed contract.

  47. I’m not sure why his statement has become such a lightning rod for the Viking faithful. There are 49 states (in addition to many 3rd World countries) that are much nicer than MN.

  48. Is there some sort of contest this off season to post ridiculous takes having to do with the Vikings? Somehow, this one isn’t even the #1 most ridiculous. It’s literally one of the worst winters in the last 80 years. Every Vikings fan wants to be in Miami right now!!!

    Why, you ask?

Because Viking fans are arrogant jerks, who’s delusional perceptions of just how good their team always is, is an annual farce most of us just laugh at, as well as their conception of what the Vikings have ever accomplished in a historical fashion.

You’ve just witnessed a clear and perfect example of it on this thread.
Sad and pathetic, but all too predictable.

  50. This internet hub bub doesn’t represent the views of Vikings fans on Kirk Cousins. First off, Minnesotans don’t hate on anyone, particularly fellow mild mannered nice Midwesterners. What I hear about Cousins is that they admire him hanging in to make tough throws with bad protection often getting obliterated a moment after unleashing a laser strike to his receivers. They don’t like the fumbles for sure, but most rational people know that Cousins wasn’t asked in job interview if he was able to absorb a karate chop from a 270 lb. man while holding the ball in a quick release position. Vikings fans by and large are proud to root for him. Trubisky is an unknown, Rogers is probably on the descent and I can’t even remember the name of the Lion’s QB. The Vikings will quite possible have the best QB in the NFC North for the immediate future.

    All true.

Had I been asked to play GM from home I would have kept Keenum. Problem with that is if the Vikes go 8-7-1 they’re steamrolled for *not* signing a young, strong-armed FA that ‘could have put them over the top.’ The great ones seem to elevate the players around them and Cousins didn’t do that. Just the same, Kirk was arguably Minnesota’s best player on offense last season. It simply was not good enough.

Zimmer said before the season it wasn’t Super Bowl or bust. The idea was to inject some stability into a position that’s been a revolving door the last couple decades. Say what you want about Minnesota’s chances of winning a title, but those chances decrease starting a new QB every season. He took hits and stayed healthy. Credits for that.
