Florida authorities have “no idea” regarding the “biggest name” report

Friday’s bombshell was, for a while, overcome by a bigger bombshell. It’s unclear whether the second bombshell ever will explode.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Patriots owner Robert Kraft isn’t the “biggest name” involved in the investigation that has Kraft and many others accused of solicitation of prostitution. That sparked rampant speculation regarding the person to whom the “biggest name” belongs, with plenty of likely innocent names being dragged into the discussion with absolutely no evidence that they have any involvement whatsoever.

But here’s the problem. There’s currently no proof of a “biggest name,” and no reason to understand why the authorities would be holding a “biggest name” so close to the vest, after releasing a long list of other names, including Kraft’s.

Nobody around here has any idea what [Schefter] is referring to,” state attorney spokesman Mike Edmondson said, via Diana Moskovitz and Kelly Naqi of Deadspin.com.

So maybe the “biggest name” will emerge, proving Schefter right. And maybe the “biggest name” won’t, proving Schefter the opposite. Either way, the clock is ticking and speculation continues and it will be unfortunate for those who have been linked without evidence to the case based solely on a claim that potentially ends up being incorrect.

  1. Prostitution should be legalized. Consenting adults should have to freedom to do whatever they want.

However, human trafficking is NOT within the bounds of “consent”. If Kraft knew (which, to be clear, I suspect he didn’t) then he’s scum. I have a feeling though, that all of the johns caught in the sting had no idea about trafficking.

  2. John Havens, former President and COO of Citigroup, Inc. was also charged. Pretty big name, but I don’t know if I would necessarily classify him a “bigger” name than Kraft. Someone else may be revealed, as there are supposed to be many more names released in the coming days.

Also, the lead detective commented, “On every gentlemen you have on the list, the act is recorded on that video.”

  3. Patriots should have to forfeit all draft picks in rounds 1-3, for tarnishing the Shield

  4. Everytime I see one of these stories , I say please don’t be in Florida , please don’t be in Florida ………….Crap .Most of us are normal I swear .

    Tiger Woods….Duh

Suppose we put your name in there without any evidence. How would you and your family feel?….Duh

  6. @footballpat

I agree, all of the parties involved will be revealed in due time. They are not “leaking” names as some have suggested.

This is not a case of something that had been going on for a few months and localized to a few shops with willing participants. Some of the places involved have apparently been offering these services for years, and have been traced back to New York and China. Human trafficking is at the core of the investigation, events will unfold over the coming days.

    Gotta be Goodell

    ————————-

That would be shocking. If it truly were Goodell and it turned out to be that he and Kraft were involved in human trafficking, this is something that could take the entire league down.

It wouldn’t take the league down. All that would likely happen is Goodell would be fired, the NFL owners would hire an outside company to vet candidates and a new commissioner would take over. The league’s owners knowing they have mud on their face would collectively make a donation to an organization against human trafficking and everyone would move on. To think an employee could take down a league is ridiculous.

  9. Who cares.

The Lions are the Browns of the NFC. One playoff win since 1957, why are they even in the NFL?

  10. Well…wouldn’t be the first time Schefter didn’t have his facts straight. Hes a little over dramatic for my tastes. You know he’s probably the guy who can’t watch old Full House episodes without getting choked up during the “dark” moments.

  11. If reports are true this old fart needs to be stripped of his team and should face significant jail time. Scum like that deserves a couple of encounters with his new friend Bubba.

Nice attempt at fake outrage there. He’s charged with a second class misdemeanor, which typically gets you a ticket and fine.

This was just a simple sting operation to get johns/customers,any claims of it really being about trafficking investigation are far fetched, and Florida Sheriffs departments have pretty bad reputations overall (and we have only heard there side). There are literally thousands of such Asian massage parlors around the country. The Sheriffs would have shut it down immediately if it was a trafficking investigation rather than letting it go on and focusing on johns.

Not to minimize any of this, but there won’t be any jail time involved, and the hit to his reputation will be a bigger punishment to him than any legal ramifications.

  13. One of the names on the arrest sheet was “John Johnson”….obviously a cover name for someone. This “John Johnson” has yet to be explained. They are obviously holding back revealing someone.

    I am spartacus

  15. When the dust settles, we’ll probably see NFL sponsored commercials condemning human trafficking; one week on the schedule in which players are encouraged to wear pink spikes and link arms as a show of solidarity during a national anthem.

Also, Kraft does not own the team. The Kraft group does. That would become an important legal detail if they tried stripping it from Kraft himself based on his own behavior. The best they could to is have Kraft step away from being the face of it or any PR role. Jonathan Kraft already does run the Kraft group for the most part (father still does have some hands in) and as far as running the team itself thats what they hired Belichick to do.

  17. Kraft doesn’t own the team? Don’t be silly. Holding company, the kraft group, is common ownership structure used for legal, tax, accounting, and other purposes. Kraft controls the kraft group which gives him ownership and control over Patriots. He will not lose the team over a little h job, but not sure why you rushing in to defend him.

  18. Shefty draws more attention to himself with his “I know something that nobody else does, but I’m not going to get specific” approach to his job.

The name recognition he receives for putting this stuff out there is so high, and the consequences for never backing it up are so low. How could he *not* try it?

Someday the worm will turn and he’ll be exposed.

  19. The local sheriff said there would be “a” surprise in this story–not multiple surprises. They also said no one was more shocked than they were when they saw Kraft on the videos. Seems they’ve released everything they have.

  20. Years ago, Shefty was a good beat reporter for The Denver Post. He has since, obviously, moved on to celebrity status and loves it. Being on camera is his oxygen and he loves to look at his cell phone every 20 seconds for “breaking news” from his top placed, unnamed “confidants.” It’s all self-marketing. He is good at it. Caveat emptor with him.

  21. There has been another announcement.
Johnny DelPrete, the longtime boyfriend of an LPGA star, was arrested in Stuart, Florida, as part of a human trafficking investigation involving several spas.

Kraft Group is a long way from just being a holding company for the Patriots.. And Jobathan Kraft controls the Kraft group. Bob Built it, but Jonathan had been running it for years now.

  23. Not like Shefty has ever tried to call attention to himself before.

And while there are, in the real world, bigger names that a football owner, Shefty knows his average reader only pays attention to football and isn’t going to think, or know, about anyone outside football.

  24. It’ll turn out to be Mickey Mouse. Though evidence of him is still very sketchy and embarrassed Florida authorities are doing their damnedest to stop him being drawn into the frame.

  25. If there really is corroborating video, Kraft could get a full year suspension. No way the league wants him hoisting the Hunt and/or Lombardi trophy on national TV for a long time.

  26. Still can’t understand why this is such an issue. And I don’t say that as a Pats fan, I’d say the same about Jerry Jones, Jim Irsay, anybody. It’s embarrassing for Kraft, but that’s it. If there was a human trafficking side to this, that’s terrible, but that’s not on the johns. If you have to fine or suspend Kraft for the sake of PR, do it. Beyond that, this should be a non-issue.

  27. People talking about Kraft losing his team over this. As long as he isn’t charged in sex trafficking this is a very small thing. A misdemeanor where normally it would not be front page news but because there are a couple big names on the report it is. They release names to embarrass the johns.
If nothing else is involved then this is less than someone getting a DWI. Again if no big names on the list nobody would of ever heard about this. There should be no team penalties except a fine. Of course with Goodell you never know what will happen.
