Scout suggests that Kyler Murray inflated his height at the Scouting Combine

AP

When quarterback Kyler Murray sprouted from under 5’10” in August to over 5’10” in February, eyebrows were raised. I joked that maybe he spent 48 hours in a zero-gravity chamber before coming to the Combine.

In the eyes of some, maybe it wasn’t a joke.

I think that his height was inflated,'” an unnamed scout told Dan Patrick on Tuesday, and Dan relayed the story on the Wednesday edition of his show. “‘Maybe it’s the tin-foil hat theory. I just don’t see it. If he refuses to be measured at the Pro Day, that will be telling.'”

It’s definitely a tin-foil hat theory, but with so much gold riding on individual draft position, who knows that prospects may do to warp reality? As to Murray’s weight, Chris Simms suggested last week that Murray possibly opted not to work out at the Combine because he focused on packing on as many pounds as possible, and that Murray will turn his attention to shedding the weight and running as fast as possible at his Pro Day workout.

Regardless, the Murray situation is an example of extreme analysis and suspicion and skullduggery, in every direction. Ultimately, all that matters is whether the kid can play. As we said throughout Combine week on PFT Live, the risk of drafting Kyler Murray and having him become a bust is outweighed by the risk of passing on the NFL’s next phenomenon.

  1. He’s 5’8″ at best.

It was jarring to see that game against Bama with the overhead camera.

Dude is tiny. But so is Drew “6 feet” Brees.

  2. If I were a team looking at him pre-draft, I’d probably ask him to step up to the tape. He’s been deceptive through the whole process, why wouldn’t people question him?

  3. Every year it’s the same old stuff from anonymous sources. Nothing new here, does standing up straighter for an extra 1/8th of an inch make a difference in playing football?

  4. I don’t have a personal problem with this kid. But I will not lie: the media rooting for him, for whatever reason, is making me not want him to succeed. Honestly, that’s not fair, and I know it. But I cannot figure out what the media is propping this kid up for. Why does he HAVE to be number 1 in the draft? Why is he suddenly like the greatest thing on God’s green earth? Can someone tell me who started the memo to boost his draft stock?

  5. He is not Russell Wilson! He can run but those passes are not going to last long in The NFL! Exciting but as for aptitude and the long grind on the big stage. I don’t think so.

  6. I’m sore tired of all the hoopla about the kid and his sudden rise from third round pick at best before committing to attend the combine to now a sure fire first round pick after committing.

Can the kid play football? Absolutely. So could Tebow. Competitiveness and athleticism alone don’t guarantee success as an NFL QB. I would say that game knowledge helps tremendously as shown by lesser athletic talents Brady, Brees, Manning, et al.

He’s young and does not have the knowledge that experience brings. The key question is, can he learn it? I expect he can.

  7. Next phenomenon? This kid isnt even close to being in Deshaun Watson’s class. Pump the brakes will ya?

  8. Media rooting for him? All I’m seeing is members of the media relaying anonymous sources saying ridiculously negative things about him.

  9. To me this story would carry a lot more weight if these anonymous sources actually provided different theories on how he could’ve faked his height.

It is not as if these prospects are getting measured by their agents w their agents yelling out their height and the NFL having to take their word for it.

This was all done at the combine by NFL ppl. Was it Kliff doing the measuring. How did he fudge his height? It’s easy to just throw it out there w no proof what so ever just some old school scouts opinion who’s stuck in the 70’s.

  10. Enough about him, please. Like every other 1st round pick, he has a 50-50 chance of succeeding in the NFL. Let’s just wait and see.

  11. Every prospect is scrutinized but for some reason the media elites have decided that Murray is off limits to any scrutiny. Everyone should be treated fairly and equally but there should be no room for special treatment.

How did he fake his hand size? There are tricks to stretch the ligament in the hands its been done before !

  13. if measured 1st thing in the morning compared to late afternoon, 1/4 inch difference is not unexpected

  14. this guy is a bust waiting to happen..he starts one year at oklahoma becuase he couldnt beat out baker mayfield and now he is supposed to be the next best thing…lololol…bustttttttttttttttttttttttttt

  15. @natureboy123 It is because Kingsbury is the Cardinals coach. Before he knew he’d get the job. He said if he were an NFL coach, he’d take Murray with the 1st pick in the draft. Then he gets the Cardinals job and they have the first pic. Everything snowballed from there.

  16. The Vombine is known for fabricating measurements. Why do you think pro scouts bring their own stop watch. Just look at the simulcast of Chris Johnson’s 40 with John Ross. Johnson beats him by a body length .. yet Ross’s official time is faster.

  17. My point is this, If some scout wants too put out rumors about this kid then he should sign his name to it. If not just shut up.

  18. Seriously though, if his height is really that important the Oakland A’s hold the true answer to the question. Wouldn’t they have given him a physical where he would be measured and weighed?

  19. You know who else was the next phenomenon but was too slight and ran too much and couldn’t draw a play on a board and was overextended by more than one read?

RG3. No pressure no diamonds tho. Lol.

  20. My neighbor spent 4 weeks doing stretches and laid horizontal in order to be accepted in the navy. He was a short man. His father literally carried him to the recruiters office in order to be tall enough. So, it’s certainly possible. Like florio said though, if the kid can play, he can play.

  21. Did I miss something? How in the world could he cheat on height measurement unless he paid the guys measuring him to lie which would never happen. And what is the tin foil hat theory? Did he also cheat when he threw the 42 tds and completed 69% of his passes? Did he lie about the 1000 yards and 12 tds he rushed for? Kids special . Deal with it. I Don’t care about his height.

  22. Count me as shocked, shocked I tell you! Like the one guy said about the Navy this went on a lot with people joining the police academy before they lowered their restrictions. Easy pass on this one.

  23. I agree with hailtothenamechange, this Kyler Murray over the hill media boom is exactly the same as with RG3 and and in 3 years, Murray will be a good back up coming off IR.

  24. For all the people asking “how in the world could he cheat on his height,” uh, ever hear of risers? They’re shoe inserts than can make you up to like 1 1/4 inches taller. It wouldn’t be rocket science.

  25. Scouts often publicly knock players they are high on so the player slides and can be drafted by the team they work for.

Some are high on Kyler. Some are not. I tend to think he will be taken by the Raiders at #4. I don’t see Kingsbury and Keim risking their NFL careers on Kyler. Even if Rosen stinks it up for the next 2 years it won’t get them fired. But if Rosen is traded and Kyler is a bust. FIRED!

Kyler is channeling his inner Mickey Abbot, with lifts in his cleats

I’m sure heightening is in the NFL banned list and he could be banned for it at the discretion of the Commissioner.

    Running QB’s don’t win very many Superbowls… I’d pass

    _——————–

Pass? Tell that to the Seahawks….

  28. Why are we looking for the next RG3, and not the next Tom Brady? Every year around time. we look for great athletic QB’s, but then every super bowl Sunday we watch all these non-athletic QB’s hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

They are measure in their bare/ stocking feet at the combine. Thanks for playing though !!

  30. I see two scenarios:

A – Murray is 5’10. He should then agree to be measured, and dispell all the speculation.

A – Murray is less than 5’10. He should then agree to be measured, and dispell all the speculation. If not, and he later is shown to be a lot shorter (I don’t mean 5′ 9.75, I mean 5′ 9 or 5′ 8) then he lacks credibility and looks bad.

  31. He probably pulled a Barney Fife and stretched his neck/spine in the front closet.

  32. Considering that an inch could be worth millions of dollars to him, he would be a fool not to try to inflate his height with something put on the bottom of his feet.

  33. Seriously, though, “inflated” doesn’t have to mean “faked”. It could simply mean that his measured height is not his natural height. Hanging upside down with weights attached to your head will stretch you out by the small differences being discussed.

  34. He will get squashed like a bug when sacked….when he runs he will get blown up….when will folks realize running qb’s in the NFL don’t last long and have never won titles….except Steve Young but he was a passer first

  35. The photos at the Heisman Ceremony are real and accurate. Murray really is 5’10”. And Tua is 6’4″. Alabama just lists him as 6’1″ to throw everyone off.

  36. What was his record in high school… something like 650 – 0? And how did he play for the Sooners? Oh, he only won the Heisman? Who cares how tall he is? I don’t care if he’s 5’8″ if he can throw down field over defenders. His passes were RARELY blocked. He had less passes blocked then did Kirk Cousins and several other taller QBs. I’d take him….

  37. Take it from a guy who is 5-9. That kid is not taller than me.

i seriously doubt he was standing next to you in your parents basement to come to that conclusion.

  38. We are all about 1/2 inch taller in the morning after spending the night in bed. People make claims that regularly inverting yourself can increase your height by as much as an inch and 1/2. With 33 vertebrae each separated by soft tissue spacers called discs, a mm each doesn’t seem out of the question if that is your goal and the payoff if you succeed is $35 million

    _____________________
    Three theories I heard:
    1. He gave himself a lump on the head
    2. Prosthetics were added to the bottom of his feet
    3. He spent time on an inversion table right before measurement

When millions of dollars can be made or lost by an inch, not doing something to get over the 5 foot 10 mark would be the surprise.

  40. Even if he did something to “inflate” his height, how much of a difference could that possibly make? 1/8″ or 1/4″? I can maybe understand if 5’8″ instead of 5’10” made a difference in your evaluation, but is 1/8″ or 1/4″ really going to affect how he plays? Seriously, hold your fingers 1/4″ apart in front of your face and tell me how that little difference in height could possibly make a difference.

How does he fake it? Aren’t they measured out in the open?
    ——————————————

Not sure it would be considered “fake”. But stretching and hanging upside down can increase height by about 1% or so by decompressing the spine. If you’re hovering around 70 inches tall that can be the difference between being 5’9.3″ and 5’10”. Would you hang upside down for hours on end if it meant that you could increase your earning potential SIGNIFICANTLY? Again, not sure you can call it fake… but perhaps inflated is a better term? It’s not like he had to do anything at the combine other than being weighed and measured, so if he’s a bit fatter and a bit more stretched out it’s not like it is going to affect his workouts.

  43. Not sure what they have them wear when they measure them but if they permit socks, this is easy to fake with a heel insert. I agree looking at the Heisman picture makes Tua look a whole lot more than just 3 inches taller than Murray.

  44. So…. this drafts darling Murray is already starting his slide from for sure first overall to late first round?

The pre draft smoke screens and misdirections are in full effect.

  45. What was the temperature when he was measured? Would his height deflate on a chilly winter night?

  46. I love all these experts claiming this kid is a bust.. based on what? your intimate knowledge of what makes a guy a good pro? You are taking the word of someone who once had a job, got fired and hasn’t been rehired by anyone? I don’t know Chuck Casserly and he is probably a good guy. Doing what he did which is basically trying to ruin a guy for the draft was low. Now we are hearing that a guy “inflated his height”.. this is just nonsense. I don’t know if the kid will be a great pro or not but every year we see guys get drafted who are supposed to be great and aren’t. Guys who aren’t that turn out to be. It is a crap shoot and acting like people have some inside knowledge is a joke.

  47. s to Murray’s weight, Chris Simms suggested last week that Murray possibly opted not to work out at the Combine because he focused on packing on as many pounds as possible, and that Murray will turn his attention to shedding the weight and running as fast as possible at his Pro Day workout.

This can be easily solved by scouts and GMs demanding to re-weigh him and measure his height again at his pro day. The kid was guzzling water like there was an upcoming drought up until the combine.

Listen to Andrew Hawkins talk about how he inflated his height. He sculpted clay around his heels & then taped up his feet “for the drills”. It’s definitely possible.

  49. Ultimately, all that matters is whether the kid can play.

    ——-

    ahem, Johnny Manziel could play

  50. Lets see, Murray measured a little under 5’10” somewhere, in the NFL combined he measured a little over 5’10”. A little under and a little over isn’t a real measurement. Murray would be listed at 5’10” in both cases. Some people just like to split hairs and cause controversy.

I agree with some other comments, if Murray can play QB at the NFL level, who cares!

  51. I have not logged into PFT for over a year, and I have been reading posts only for the last week – even though my team won the Super Bowl and I had some curiosity about what the haters were saying. My wife says I am the best estimator in the state. That said:

    1. I saw clips yesterday of Russell Wilson from his Wisconsin days and he looks taller than listed and certainly taller than Murray.
    2. There is no way that Murray is 5-10 or taller. If he is, then the LB and DB chasing him are 6-5. They are a half-helmet or more taller than him.
    3. His current refusal to be measured at his pro day is a huge mistake.
    4. As for other things, his team BARELY beat Army. Please.

Arizona will take him and Rosen will get a better chance elsewhere.

  52. Cardinals are adrift without a rudder and this is a very deep draft defensively. Perfect time to swing for the fences with someone getting so much hype.

Rosen still seems to have potential skill-wise, but the worst-case scenario doesn’t seem that different between Murray & Rosen, so not much to lose, especially if they can get a decent pick back for him.

As soon as I heard Washington mentioned in connection to Rosen, it all made perfect sense. Unless they want Lock.

Kyler is better than half the quarterbacks in the league and that includes Matt Stafford and Kirk Cousins

    ===========

To be accurate, he’s not better than anyone yet. The list of college stars, and Heisman winners, who crash and burn in the NFL is long. There’s simply no way to tell until he’s playing pro, and even then not right away (see: Mayfield clicking as the season progressed).

    ==============

I’d be shocked if there isn’t some kind of readily-available collagen-like stuff that could be injected into one’s heels and then drained later. Not throwing or doing drills at the combine would be the perfect cover for doing something like that.

Not suggesting Murray actually did any of that, just talking hypotheticals. The pro day will either clear up doubt or reinforce it.

Getting both heavier and taller seems like an unusual mix, but everyone’s different.

  55. 5’9″ meh
    5’10” Yeeeeessss! #1 Pick!!!!!!

And you wonder how scouts end up picking so many busts in the draft.

I’m not saying Kyler will be a bust, I’m just talking about the mentality of scouts.

It’s ridiculous some of these guys are professionals. Like an inch changes things, a blazing 40 time dismisses 3 years of game tape and someone shoots up the draft board. Things like that make you wonder.

  56. Combine is so overrated. Looking at the combine film of Brady, he shouldn’t have been invited, just like Edelman wasn’t.

  57. One thing to remember is Murray’s agent has every incentive to do everything possible (morally or immoral) to get his client drafted as high as possible; at number one there would be about $15 million guaranteed and a nice percentage for him.

  58. Someone beat me to that Seinfeld comment lol. Surprised Florio didnt link a Seinfeld clip in the article.
Kyler “Mickey” Murray -hey if this football thing doesnt work out for him then maybe he can be a stand-in for a kid actor in a soap opera, or maybe he can act out jaundice for med students.

  59. Combine is so overrated. Looking at the combine film of Brady, he shouldn’t have been invited, just like Edelman wasn’t.

Yet you are still watching, 16 years later.

  60. 48-0 record playing the top level Texas football in high school

1st all time in yards per attempt EVER
Highest pass efficiency rating with 205.7 EVER
Tied for 3rd with the most TD’s
and you all are talking about his height! Get outta here

  61. Doesn’t really matter if he inflated his height or not. He is a small guy who is going to get pounded into the ground by NFL defenses.

  62. Oh no his shills in the media and elsewhere won’t like that. Guess his agent, his college coach and Kingsbury will have to be interviewed again. Why the media determined he was their darling and not the DE that ran a 4.41 40 is beyond me.

  63. I don’t have a personal problem with this kid. But I will not lie: the media rooting for him, for whatever reason, is making me not want him to succeed. ——————————————————————————
This!! I’m asking the same questions.
Nothing against him. Not at all. But there does seem to be a coordinated effort to promote and protect this prospect. Why??
Fair or unfair, there are some legit reasons to question and consider his draft status. Just like EVERY OTHER prospect. But it seems if you question Murray on any level, you are met with swift rebuke!

  64. I dont like the kid for the reason he played with the media, oh its all about me and whether I do baseball or football. Like Hillary, you cant pick on her if she hasnt announced yet. Just like I dont have to be measured if I’m not playing football.

All I know is he will have a resounding thud when he sees how much faster the linebackers are and he aint running away from them with ease.

What I dont get is if someone is going to the combine they should be forced to fully cooperate or stay home. Wasting the coaches and analyst time with this bs.
