Michael Bennett-Greg Schiano reunion could be awkward

The Patriots are planning to trade for defensive end Michael Bennett when the new league year begins, and things could get awkward with the Patriots’ new defensive coordinator, Greg Schiano.

Bennett previously played for Schiano in Tampa Bay, and Bennett made no secret that he didn’t enjoy that experience.

“I think he just wants to flex his power,” Bennett said in 2013. “He has small [man’s] syndrome. I still talk to guys who are there, and trust me, there’s not much respect for him in that locker room.”

Schiano and Bennett may be able to bury the hatchet in New England, as the Patriots have a good track record for keeping outside issues from becoming a distraction. But it could be tense when they first get together, as Bennett will soon be playing for a defensive coordinator he’s previously said he doesn’t respect.

  1. Love my pats but I will not cheer for Bennett

So many good memories of the past. Don’t want a whiner

Still can’t believe they would pick him up

  2. Bennett has something to say about everything and everybody , some call it being passionate, ya think? BB won’t put up with locker room non sense!

  3. Bennett lied about a cop holding a gun to his head, when a cop turned himself into a human shield to protect Bennett’s life. Hopefully Shiano and the rest of the nation has no respect for Michael Bennett.

  4. Bennett sucks. He’s stealing money at this point. He doesn’t even make it to Week 1.

  5. Belichick will have a serious talk as he does with all potential additions. His navy background means he runs a tight ship with channels of protocol, accountability and most all no mutiny!

  6. Bennett is a bad person that has been divisive, including lying to push a hoax hate-crime against police. That said, the Patriots are the ultimate second chance for a football player to redeem himself and I hope that he does.

    In Belichick We Trust.

  7. I’m in the minority of Bills fans that respect and appreciate the patriots. Watching the greatest coach/qb ever with my own eyes is awesome. I don’t respect either of the Bennett’s and I don’t respect this move. This isn’t having someone conform to the Patriot way. The Bennett’s are not respectable.

  8. Typical of the pathetic Patriots. Thinking they can just pick up any player they want and he’s going to be great. The most nauseating franchise in the history of sports

  9. Well, if he opens his mouth too much, he will be discarded like a rag doll and his reputation will be damaged for ever.
BB will let him know how it is in Foxborough, if his brother already hasn’t.

  10. let’s not forget that Schiano was a complete tool when he coached the Bucs. Bennett may be a whiner, but in this case he’s 100% correct as well.

  11. Schianno is the odd addition to the Patriots not Bennet. Given the cost and career stage Bennet is a good get. Even the Rutgers guys in the room will not accept the old Schianno act so Schianno is on at least as short a leash as Bennet.

  12. This could be the Patriots Achilles heel. It might take the Bennett brothers to do it.

  13. Now the Pats need to Sign the other Bennett brothers, Colt and Rooster, to corner the market on Bennetts.

If Schiano and Bennett have any problems, one or the other will be gone by Week 3. In Bill We Trust.

  14. Bill Belichick runs the show in New England. He’ll make that very clear to Bennett. If there are any problems, Belichick will quickly eliminate them. That’s just another reason why he is the greatest coach in NFL history.

  15. Long time Pat’s fan, and I hate this acquisition. In fact, I haven’t seen a single positive fan reaction anywhere. At best it is “In Bill We Trust”.

  16. The Patriots run a tight ship.
If I was a new player, near the end of my career, I’d keep my mouth shut and hope for a super bowl ring and another paycheck.

  17. “Bennett sucks. He’s stealing money at this point. He doesn’t even make it to Week 1.”

Hilarious. People like you who don’t like a player make these claims without even bothering to look at what the guy did last year.

Which BTW was 9 sacks, 15 tackles for a loss and 30 QB hits. The latter was something like 5th in the entire league. But yeah, he “sucks”.

You don’t like the guy fine, but you make yourself look foolish by claiming he’s not a good player still.

  18. Bennett needs to shut his mouth and just DO HIS JOB!
He has a problem with interjecting all of his Social Justice Warrior extra-curricular BS into the locker room. THAT needs to be squashed because it’s highly divisive. If Bennett decides he wants to create a problem, he’ll be forced to “get his mind right”…or he’ll be gone.

  19. People said Marty Bennett would be a disaster and he wasn’t. He’s a talky guy too, but he just said a lot of funny stuff and there were no issues about his not being a team player. I imagine Michael Bennett already knows the rules of being on the Patriots, but he’ll have it explained to him anyway. And he’ll also be told that the Patriots don’t hesitate to sit and even cut guys who can’t stick with the program.

I am a little nervous about Schiano. Last season there was such a good feeling among the players and coaches. Still disciplined, but just tons of respect and, yeah, love. I hope Schiano doesn’t blow that atmosphere, especially when it looks like the team will have a mix of old and new guys who need to gel.

  20. You haters watch and learn. Only Vonn Miller and Mack had more QB pressures in the last 3 years than Michael.12 picks this year… Last year’s draft class basically redshirted . Above the salary cap. Defending SB Champs. Yawn.. You bore me.

  21. It happens every year. BB builds the team for that year and people complain about his additions. This year it’s Bennett last year it was Brown. Brown was too fat and lazy the self proclaimed experts said. Hardly. Keep hating.

    ————————————–

Bennett can do his job that’s all BB is worried about. It didn’t cost NE much to obtain him. If his brother comes back that will be a plus also.

  23. It will work fine. One person is in charge, Bill Belichick, and everyone else just does their job. Belichick keeps it real simple. He doesn’t over-think stuff. Tom Brady has a lot to do with that. 90% of everything is the QB. Belichick has been doing this for a long time, so he knows what buttons to push and even if you push the wrong button, Tom Brady shows up on Sunday. Both Bennett and Schiano butted heads because they are super competitive and they wanted to win. When you don’t win, you get problems. These guys will get to know each other in a less stressfull environment and get along fine. They’ll actually help each other out.

  24. I’m sick of the whole thing.

Basically stopped watching NFL games this past fall.

This coming fall? I’ll be walking my dog instead.

  25. I watched Bennett play his and dominant his career with the Seahawks. He had a down yes due to injury his last year but I paid attention to his play with the Eagles and his play popped off the screen pass rushing and he would absolutely blow up the run game.

Belichick’s knows what a force this guy is on the football field. He was a one man wrecking ball in the Super Bowl until his other pass rusher went out at half time. If any of you think he is going go stop talking you are crazy.

  26. Which BTW was 9 sacks, 15 tackles for a loss and 30 QB hits. The latter was something like 5th in the entire league. But yeah, he “sucks”.

Inflated numbers b/c he played opposite Fletcher Cox. Sit down boy

  27. “Typical of the pathetic Patriots. Thinking they can just pick up any player they want and he’s going to be great.”

    Another hilarious post.

I don’t think Bill expects any player to be “great” per se. Its clear from the past that he picks up players and expects them to be good or very good at the specific role he defines for them. And he usually defines that role based on their strengths to fill a role he needs filled on the team.

It doesn’t always work out but does far more than with most other teams. He’s been historically successful at this. I think Bennett will excel under Bill and be a very effective player the coming season unless he gets a serious injury early on.

What’s actually pathetic is the gnashing of teeth and gnawing off of your own extremities of the Pats haters over this. Pretty funny too. Lolz

  28. As a Pats fan, yes, this is a tough signing. Great player, unblockable in the SEA/NE superbowl, but two shameful incidents with the police in Vegas and shoving an elderly woman.

But true fans live and breath “in Bill we trust.” BB runs his team based on principles. And a big one is “everyone starts with a clean slate once they walk through the door.” If BB thinks Bennett is capable of taking of advantage of a fresh start, I’ll just numb myself with a 6 superbowl dvd marathon and let them go to work.

  29. I like the move. I’ve always defended the Patriots against the accusations the haters loved to cite (spygate, deflategate, etc.) but since signing Bennett, I’ll no longer have to do this. Save me a seat haters, I’m on board with you.

  30. The guy can play and he’s not too expensive. It isn’t as if the Patriots are known for their choir boys. They’ve had a murderer on their team and their owner is a known john. Bennett may be a big mouth and lots of times it’s BS that’s coming out, but the man can play football and that’s what Belichick cares about.

  31. Bennett played 1 year for him, 2012. So, things are static from 2012?

Nick Bosa on playing for new #patriots defensive assistant Greg Schiano at Ohio State. “ he’s aggressive. Great guy. Smart coach schematically. Definitely intense, that’s for sure.”

  32. -Problems already with a coach..check
    -2-4 game looming suspension..check
-no more Fletcher Cox getting triple teamed..check

Howie just keeps gamin those pats.
Thanks for the year Mike. I wonder if bb will let you sitout all those practices like you did week in and out down here..And without cox, plenty of playing time available now, right???

Addition by subtraction/Careful what you wish for.

ALL WE GOT ALL WE NEED

Right! As soon as he makes his first sack you’ll be losing your mind like the rest of us

  35. I love this signing because the Patriots need some mean players on defense, especially for their pass rush. Next season, they should aim to rank 15th or better for quarterback sacks. This past season, they ranked 30th. Michael Bennett jumps offsides a lot, but a little bit of more discipline can go a long way in the NFL. He was one of the very few defensive tackles to get to Brady in Super Bowl XLIX.

I don’t care if he gets 50 sacks next year. I don’t accept people who lie about the person protecting them simply to get his mug on tv for a despicable “cause” so he can try to cost a man his job. Bennett’s should understand you need to get paid. Never mind trying to destroy a reputation..

“Ernie Adams and BB have bad a crush on this guy for years.”

    =====================

Yes, I heard the same thing from Michael Lombardi in a podcast about when he was working for the Patriots and they feared the most against the Seahawks were Michael Bennett and Kam Chancellor. It was Bennett that stir the drink that allows the Legion of Boom to do their business in their heyday. Mutual admiration is correct.

  38. belichick has had plenty of insults from opposing players that he just shrugged off and later signed as free agents. he has thick skin and expects all his players and coaches to be tough enough to put that crap behind them when the sign on.

  39. If that’s a problem, don’t bring him in. If his brother ends up there as well, and things don’t go well, things could get weird in the locker room, but that’s not in my wheelhouse. That’s Bill’s job.

  40. bennett is a moaner & a complainer..this does not seem like the ideal place for him

  41. Big deal….. they don’t have to love each other & hang out together away from the field, they just each have to do their jobs effectively, & Bill will be there to make sure that happens……
Respect is earned….& given to those that have earned it already…..to me it looks like they BOTH have some earning to do…. guess we will see how it unfolds in a relatively short time
    GO PATS!!!!!

  42. If you want a good laugh, go back a year and read all the comments by Patriot fans reacting to the Eagles signing of Bennett and compare them with this year’s reactions.

Apparently, a year ago, according to Pats fans, the guy was a washed up locker room cancer,

Now, after the Eagles made it work, there’s *no way* the Patriots fans will entertain the notion that this signing could have been a mistake.
