Report: Rams re-sign Dante Fowler Jr.

During the 2018 regular season, the Rams gave up a third-round pick for defensive end Dante Fowler Jr., as he closed in on the end of his rookie contract. Now, with his shot at free agency looming, the Rams have struck a deal to keep Fowler around.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Rams have struck a one-year deal to keep Fowler in the fold.

The third pick in the 2015 draft, Fowler tore an ACL during his first rookie minicamp practice, wiping out his rookie year. He thereafter failed to become a significant contributor in Jacksonville, starting only once during his time with the Jaguars.

He started six of eight regular-season games with the Rams, racking up two sacks. He added 1.5 sacks in three postseason games, and his hit on Saints quarterback Drew Brees forced the interception that later became the game-winning field goal in overtime.

The Rams had tried to trade for Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes, but a deal wasn’t struck. Fowler became the fallback, and he’ll now be hanging around, at least for 2019.

  1. One year deal to keep Fowler in town. Rams are trying to capitalize on their SB window while they can. Which is smart. Maximize the salary cap before you have to pay your QB big money.

So, Ram Haters, is this is what “Cap Hell” looks like?

Did it help win against the GOAT #12 and company ?

  3. D Fowler is not worth 14 million for one year, that is crazy money. What about paying based upon PERFORMANCE! I am not a Ram hater but 2 sacks in 8 games is not great performance( plus 1 1/2 sacks post season).

  4. @fearsome4

His first chance at free agency and he signs a 1 year deal? They either paid him a boatload…or no other teams thought he was worth a multiyear deal.

  5. He’s another guy with a million dollar body and a ten cent head. He makes poor decisions over and over hence the nickname in Jacksonville “Dante Fowlup”.
The Rams have seen this too hence the 1 year “prove it” deal.

No wait until you have to sign Goff. And if it’s also a one year deal, than absolutely. One year deals are a pretty good indication although.

  7. When he was still in Jax, he wanted a mega deal. That’s why the Jags were eager to dump him. It’s interesting to see he signed a one-year deal. Something tells me there wasn’t much of a market for an under-performing, over-talking, often-injured, unproductive pass rushing DE. I suspect the contract has a lot of performance bonuses in it which he’ll be unlikely to attain, especially if they let Suh go. He benefitted from having Suh and Donald and still wasn’t all that productive. I still believe the Rams wasted a draft choice by trading for him.
