Departure of Jake Ryan closes books on Packers draft class

The Packers had always avoided much business in free agency, in part because former General Manager Ted Thompson was able to draft enough contributors to get away with it.

But with yesterday’s departure of linebacker Jake Ryan to Jacksonville, it closes the books on an entire draft class of Packers.

As noted by Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, former fourth-rounder Ryan was the last member of the Packers’ 2015 draft class still with the team.

First-round defensive back Damarious Randall was traded to Cleveland a year ago, for backup quarterback DeShone Kizer. Second-round cornerback Quinten Rollins never made much of an impact, and they tried to convert him to safety a year ago before releasing him. He made a brief appearance with the Cardinals last fall but isn’t on a roster now.

Third-round wide receiver Ty Montgomery was converted to running back, and released last fall after fumbling a kickoff he was supposed to down in the end zone.

After Ryan in the fourth round came quarterback Brett Hundley (who signed with Arizona having been previously pawned off on the Seahawks), fullback Aaron Ripowski (who was signed to a future contract by the Chiefs this offseason), defensive tackle Christian Ringo (who has bounced around to a second stint with the Bengals), and tight end Kennard Backman (who appeared in seven games as a rookie).

After four years, all but Randall would have been entering free agency anyway, meaning the Packers would have had to re-sign them. But not having anyone from that year’s class to be deemed worth keeping leaves a hole in the roster, one that needed to be filled by other means.

  1. I remember thinking “okay we drafted a safety to play corner in the first, huge reach, and a basketball player with one year of football in the SECOND ROUND!?”

This was the moment when I knew Thompson had gone completely senile and needed to be removed. Sadly every big decision takes 3 years too long in Green Bay (McCarthy as well), and the fans suffer for their inability to see when the writing is on the wall

  2. Since 2011, 16 players remain with the team. Many players that left Green Bay became regulars(some All-Pros) for other teams. Most of the 16 come from the 2017 draft. In many of the other drafts there’s one player or none. Perhaps this is not unusual, but that doesn’t seem like success.

When you ‘build through the draft’ as ex-GM Ted Thompson famously wanted, you have to have a higher retention than that.

  3. Ted Thompson’s last three drafts were a disaster. And with his unwillingness to help the team in free agency, it’s actually impressive that the Packers’ record isn’t worse than what it is.

Fortunately things are looking up. Brian Gutekunst has shown himself to be capable of selecting good players in the draft as well as trading for valuable picks. Acquiring the extra #1 from the Saints was brilliant, and getting anything at all for Brett Hundley was nothing short of genius.

With another good draft in 2019, the Packers will be right back in their customary place as one of the elite teams in the NFL sooner rather than later. Good for Packer fans, and a catastrophe for fans of other NFC North fans.

  4. Ted Thompson never had a great draft. And by a great draft I would categorize as getting 5 quality starters. He never really had a really good draft (4 quality starters). He usually didn’t even have an average draft (3 quality starters).

The 2015 draft is what sealed his “retirement” from Green Bay and his 2005 selection of rodgers kept him there for too long.

  5. Packers fans will tell you this just proves how deep and talented their team is they don’t need no stinking draft picks lol .

  6. After years of saying they draft better than anybody else and they don’t need free agents, the Packers realized their own guys weren’t getting them to .500. It turns out, just a QB is not a winning formula.

  7. Well done packers—. Now squander those picks next month and your team will be an above .500 team and will make the playoffs. NOT!

  8. 2015 was a terrible draft.
It created a domino effect that Green Bay’s been trying to correct ever since, and directly led us into the free agent frenzy we experienced last week.

Looking forward to April, after a year of shoring up this team the best he could, Brian Gutekunst can finally put his stamp on this squad and show how far he’s come with evaluating and selecting real college talent.
This is a big draft for him and it will go a long way to giving Matt LeFluer a boost in implementing his offense, as well as filling in the depth in the rest of this team.

  9. One of the problems the Packers had was, since they never dipped in FA, that they stacked so many draft picks on the roster each year that they didnt have room to hang onto them year after year. So they alwsys had to release more than half of their picks anually. That has now changed. Onward and upward. Go Pack Go!

Well, that draft did lift the Vikings over the Packers two games in the standings last season.
One game, if you take an honest and unbiased look at Week 2.
    So yeah, there’s all that.

    +++++

The 2016 draft produced Kenny Clark, Blake Martinez, Dean Lowry and Kyle Fackrell.

It doesn’t deserve to be lumped together with 2015.

Treadwell, Alexander, Morgan, Brothers, Kearse, and Weatherly are all still on the team and contribute as backups, rotations and special teams. They would all start on the Packers for sure.

  16. Randall: B+
    Rollins: B+
    Ty M: B-
    Jake Ryan: A
    Hundley: A
    Ripkowski/Ringo/Backman: B

These are the real grades a Packer website gave the 2015 draft! You can’t make this stuff up. Talk about being a delusional Packer fan.

  17. TTs drafting during his tenure helped Gb make the post season all but 3 seasons he was there, most whoch were early in his career after cleaning up Shermans mess.

Then went on to build rosters that went to 4 conference title games and winning a SB…. SEVERAL teams wish they had that kind of success.

Yes he did have a terrible class that year, but you learn from it and move on.

Oh well now we’ll now get to hear Jake tell everyone how bad a teammate Aaron Rodgers is.
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

And we all know how important that is to you. You’re actually trying to make the case that Barr is a better character person than Rodgers. Wow. By the way, what did you think of the crotch grab video I found for you, that you said didn’t exist, and which I was making up? Nice, huh? Barr did exactly as Rodgers described, then lied about it. Proof positive. Now you can drop it.

  21. Who said the last 3 drafts have been horrible?

    2015 not a great draft

    2016 pretty good

You can blame Fabio for having a reputation for being a cheap shot artist. Anyone else on the entire Packer defense probably wouldn’t have gotten a flag on that play. Sad but true, get over it.

You are correct. His reputation preceded him and he was under additional scrutiny because of the 4th and 9 RTP penalty the week before against Chicago. Nearly cost that game too.

No, I’ll actually blame the official for not doing his job.
If there’s any truth that he had a preconceived notion of how to call a play due to who was making it, he should be fired.

As for being over it, I’m perfectly fine with it.
The Packers were a bad team last year, there’s no disputing it, and they weren’t going anywhere whether that game was called correctly or not.
But now, I’m looking forward to a new future as far as personnel and coaching are concerned, but with the same winning cultural mindset that’s been integral to the Packers success over the years.

My point for illustrating that game is to try and shut up an arrogant fan base that still harbors delusional opinions about how great their team is, when everybody plainly sees the obvious.
The Vikings were a dismal 8-7-1, barely better than an awful Green Bay team.
And the fact that you guys are convinced that you’re one or two players away, when in reality you’re basically trotting out the same old thing, with the same old lackluster, scapegoating coach is deliciously priceless to all of us.

  25. Interestingly enough, 3 of the 4 players that Gute signed this offseason are from the 2015 draft class. Za’Darius Smith, Preston Smith, and Adrian Amos were all drafted in 2015.

Ted Thompson in 2006 also signed 4 players in free agency, like Gute has this year. Among those players were Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett. Woodson and Pickett both played over 100 games for the Packers and were key pieces on the 2010 World Championship team that Ted built.

The Packers have been and always will be a draft and develop team at their core, but you can free up your draft board and give yourself more flexibility in the draft by signing a couple studs in FA when that is needed.

Barr explained he flipped off Rodgers after Rodgers started cursing at him not the other way around as Rodgers would have you believe. (You can search for it and see the video.) Rodgers is clearly on the sidelines well after where other video shows him having his tantrum.

After Barr calling out Rodgers as a liar , Rodger changed his story and said his cursing tantrum at Barr was because Barr did not come check on him after the hit. Again, all very searchable.
