Eli Manning gets $5 million from the Giants

The Giants chose not to pay Odell Beckham Jr. $17 million this year. They have chosen to pay that same amount to Eli Manning.

Or, at a minimum, they’ve chosen to pay Manning $5 million for nothing.

It’s the fifth day of the 2019 league year, and Manning is on the roster. Which means he gets a roster bonus of $5 million from the Giants.

He also is eligible for a salary of $11.5 million and a workout bonus of $500,000 in the final year of his current contract. Although the payout is only $17 million, the cap number sits at $23.2 million, which means that his franchise-tag number for 2020 would be $27.84 million.

Before scoffing at the notion of the Giants keeping him around for one more year beyond this one more year, the Giants have continued to give Eli one more year after one more year even if, objectively, he already has had several one more years too many.

If Eli Manning weren’t Eli Manning, would he still be with the Giants? It’s a fair question; between his family name and his own personal accomplishments, securing a pair of Super Bowl wins with two of the most clutch throws we’ll ever see in a championship game, Eli seemingly has received a lifetime pass from the franchise, especially after the intensely negative fan reaction to the effort to float him on an iceberg in late 2017.

This year, the Giants once again are all in with Eli. Sure, they’ve spoken openly about the “Kansas City model,” which implies that they’ll draft a quarterback this year and let him sit and learn for a season behind Eli — and which also implies this year will be the last year for Eli. But, frankly, that feels more a pre-draft misdirection than a legitimate signpost, alerting other teams to the possibility that they’ll take a quarterback with the sixth (or now the 17th) pick in round one and hoping that someone will leapfrog them for a quarterback, pushing down the board a player in whom they actually are interested.

Regardless of who has their interest come late April, Eli Manning remains the man for the New York Football Giants, even if he wouldn’t be on the roster for any other football team in the NFL.

  1. Frankly, a guy like Eli, he’s been there since 2004, been loyal, has won a couple Super Bowls, you keep a guy like that around. He’s been clutch situations and has succeeded, he’s mastered the Patriots twice, and plays the most important position. They should keep him around!

So yes, as a Cowboys fan, I definitely think they should keep him around for several more seasons!

  2. Manning’s stats 2018:
    4,299 yds
    21 TD
    11 int
    92.4 rtg
Would he really not be on any other team?

  3. even if he wouldn’t be on the roster for any other football team in the NFL.

Not a Giants fan, nor an Eli Manning fan, but, if the Giants cut him, I would wager he would be out of work for about fifteen minutes before another team picked him up.

  4. He’d be an upgrade over whoever’s starting in Denver, Washington, Miami and Cincy.

Keenum had 1 good year and was exposed as the fraud he is.
    Flacco is absolute trash.
Miami has Dan Marino starting this year.
Cincy has the worst starting QB in the league.

  5. What exactly does Eli need to succeed?

They’ve tried 3 different coaches, they gave him the best WR in the league, and one of the best RBs and they invested heavily in the o-line.

Now they’ve traded away said WR, and moved on from arguably their best 2 defensive players.

And they think this is the year he delivers?

  6. The Giants are a poorly run franchise and have been so for years.
They have fallen off the earth since their 2011 super bowl win.
Some bad luck with injuries, and some terrible drafting and free agent signings.

  7. I think at $17.5 the Giants are making out OK. Where is this number compared to all the other starting QBs in the league? I do not know, but I would venture it is in the bottom 1/3.

  8. “He’s been clutch situations and has succeeded, he’s mastered the Patriots twice, and plays the most important position. ”

Actually Tom Coughlin’s defense is what “mastered the Patriots”. Eli did his part and kept them in the game from that side of the ball though, that’s undeniable.

  9. He has to be thanking god he got those 2 Superbowl wins because other than those 2 years he doesn’t have a single playoff win in 15 years. Because of that he never has to retire or be replaced.

The Giants have only made the playoffs once in the last 7 years.

    2018 – QBR 26th
    2017 – QBR 25th
    2016 – QBR 25th

Joe Flacco has been a better QB than Manning over the last few years and he isn’t even an upgrade over Case Keenum.

At the end of the day this just helps the other teams in the division but to claim that Eli Manning is a difference maker at QB, in a positive way, especially the last few years, is ridiculous.

    The stats that matter

    2017: 3-13
    2016: 11-5
    2015: 6-10

  11. Making a GIANT mistake, keeping throwing millions at Eli, could use some of those millions to fortify the OL, what the heck is a work out bonus? That should be a requirement not a perk! At some point you need to secure an heir or stay in the 4th spot of the division.

  12. The Giants offense was fine last year, the defense was the reason they were so bad…
The offensive line should be better this year, defense, who knows…

  13. THey couldn’t trade him so they paid him.

They have nobody else and they screwed the pooch last year when they chose a running back over a QB.

GM and ownership of this team is terrible. Has been for quite some time. I love it.

  14. I think people need to relax. Eli is a game manager at this point, just like Peyton was when he came back from the neck and won it with Denver. No one is expecting Eli to win games himself and I trust him enough to not lose. There are no other options and drafting a QB this year wont give us better play at the position. Eli is out best bet for 2019, but man o man we are going to miss obj 😪

They also had a promising young QB behind Manning that they traded away after training camp so even if the season went poorly (which it did) they had no other option but to keep playing Manning. The Giants just didn’t want to take a chance that Manning could be benched. That team is a train wreck whose only goal is to keep Eli Manning propped up until he decides to retire.

  16. Eli Manning is terrible at this point in his career and the Giants franchise is doing much more damage than just losing games starting Eli. they’re damaging their fanbase and losing fans who are fed up with the inexcusable mismanagement of the NYG. It is a horrible mistake to keep starting Eli, over the last 5yrs the Giants have started to lose an entire generation of young fans who are 14-15yrs old and dont recall SF winning since they were 6-7, which they really remember.I honestly think fans would be more excited about starting a QB such as Ryan Fitzpatrick w/ a young drafted QB sitting behind him before taking over in a year. Atleast the Giants would have a decent shot at winning some games then

    ================================

Half of his passing yards and his TD’s are all garbage time stats he picked up when the game was over and out of reach. Manning is the king at padding his stats. If you watch the games then you know the problem Eli Manning is atrocious when it actually matters like over the first 3 quarters of the game. On top of that his arm is dying, he no longer can make every throw. He struggles to throw outside the numbers with any kind of velocity at this point and cannot push the ball down the field. Stop pretending Eli Manning is playing the QB position at a high level, he’s not.

    1) He won two super bowls with Coughlin. McAdoo was awful. Eli went 22td 11int 4300yds with Shurmur.
    2) I thought Odell made all his fame off one catch. Now he’s the “best WR in the league”. Make up your mind. Besides, Odell missed half of the games over the past 2 seasons.
    3) One of the best? Saquon is THE best RB in the game and Eli was better last year because of it.
4)”Invested heavily” meaning signed one above-average-at-best LT and drafted a LG in the second round? 3/5 of the line last year was absolute trash.

  19. Not Eli’s fault that their offensive line is hot garbage. Put Brady or any other pocket passer behind that Giants’ offensive line he would look just ask as bad. Either draft a QB that can extend plays with his feet or upgrade that offensive line.

  20. Doesn’t matter if you put Brady, Montana or Brees behind that OL…. one of them would succeed.
Fix the OL and you fix Eli. I give the guy a ton of respect for never throwing anyone under the bus. A true leader.
Eli has 4-6 good years in him, IF Gettleman can fix the OL.

    GO BIG BLUE!!!
