Report: Dolphins tried to trade for Matthew Stafford last year

The Dolphins don’t really have a quarterback of the future at the moment, or a clear path to finding one.

But they tried to make a bold move to fix that last year.

According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins were interested in trading for Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, with then-coach Adam Gase reaching out to Lions coach Matt Patricia to see what it would take to do a deal.

Obviously it didn’t happen, and Gase trotted Ryan Tannehill out unsuccessfully before cleaning house of coach and quarterback this offseason.

And the possible trade may not have even reached past the talking stage. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Lions General Manager Bob Quinn denied the suggestion of trade talks at the Scouting Combine.

Still, it’s worth noting that the Dolphins were desperate to make a bold move, in the context of owner Stephen Ross saying his former coach wanted to try to “win and win now” at a time when a rebuild is clearly needed.

  1. I feel bad for the new HC for Miami. No QB of the future. Brian Flores is going to end up being a fall guy just as Todd Bowles was for the jets.

  2. That would have been a great move for both teams!

Stafford still has the talent to be a top 10 QB. A change of scenery might be perfect for him.

  3. That would’ve been something to see Staffy trying to overthrow a *different* set of receivers.

  4. So many players end up as Dolphins after making an name elsewhere. Weird this one did not occur. Should have helped both teams.

  5. Firerodgergoodell, Stafford a top ten QB!! Now that is funny, Stafford is a subpar QB at best. He isn’t going to do anything in the NFL!! Hell look what Mahonnes did for KC!! Wasn’t his fault considering what organization he working for.

  6. Stafford has the unfortunate luck of being drafted by the Lions. Being the best QB they have had over the past 60 years, he was expected to be the savior of the franchise by the fans. With the exception of 2 injury years and a horrible year last year he has done his part. Horrible GM’s and moronic coaches are extremely hard to overcome. 2014 could have been their year. Jerraha made sure that didn’t happen with taking Blandino out on the party bus before the big playoff game. How else can you explain the picked up flag? Or better yet, Dez coming on the field without his helmet to yell at the refs but no flag. Oh well…maybe Bob Quinn will figure it out

  7. How is this possible???

Didn’t the Dolphins know Colin Kaepernick expressed interested in the their QB job?? That makes them obligated to sign him! (apparently)

  8. Thank God Adam Goose is gone. Him & Tannenbum are just plain dumb. Grier & Flores will right the ship, just give it time… Fins up! 🚢🐬

  9. Many say “get rid of Stafford”. Is there a QB tree out there that I don’t know of?

It’s ridiculous to think that they can just bring in someone else that is going to be better without a significant cost, draft pick wise The other way is to draft a young guy that will, hopefully, be better.

Stafford is better than most starters in this league. He was top 10 before last season. I expect a huge bounce back year from him in 2019.

  10. Glad this didn’t happen. Giving up a 1st round pick for a over-the-hill player who’s best days are in the rear view mirror. This would have been typical SOP for T-Baum trying to make a FA splash that simply wouldn’t have made the team one bit better.
Having Gase and T-Baum out of the team building is totally a net gain for all things Dolphins.

LMAO… says a Raiders Fan!!!!! The Team where all Veterans go to get a final paycheck.

  12. Miami had Cutler for a year and Cutler is way better than Stafford so that would have been a serious downgrade.

    Playoff win history:

    Cutler 1
    Stafford 0

  13. Stafford is not one of the greats, but isn’t the worst. Poor Lions fans.

Patricia is just wasting the Lions time. He’ll be fired soon and the Lions will hit the reset button for millionth time as they continue to be the worst team in their division, NFC and possibly the entire league.
