Mike Tomlin: This was disappointing hiring cycle for minorities

Mike Tomlin, who is entering his 13th season with the Steelers, now is one of only three African-American head coaches in the league. Anthony Lynn and new Dolphins coach Brian Flores are the others.

Since Dan Rooney — the namesake of the Rooney Rule — died two years ago this month, NFL teams have made 15 head coaching hires with Flores and Steve Wilks the only African-Americans. Wilks lasted only one season in Arizona.

“I think the numbers speak for themselves in that regard,” Tomlin said, via Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It was a disappointing hiring cycle for someone who watches it like I do, knowing some of the deserving men I do who I thought should have gotten an opportunity and didn’t. But we’ll continue to work and fight for equality and opportunity.”

The league adopted the Rooney Rule in 2003, requiring teams hiring head coaches to interview at least one minority candidate. In 2009, the NFL expanded it to include openings for General Manager positions.

“I think that’s what the Rooney Rule speaks to, equality within the opportunity,” Tomlin said. “We’ll continue to fight for that, not only in terms of head coaching searches, but maybe other areas of the profession as well. I know there’s some discussions in the offseason regarding some of that.”

  1. Hmm.
I’m concerned there are no Asian HCs or GMs.
    No American Indians either.
And of course, Hispanics are seriously under-represented.

  2. GM’s and owners see how loose of a ship you run in Pittsburgh and they don’t want to go down that same path. Seems obvious to a trained observer. Plus you let your QB run all the talent out of the building so you can see why teams are skeptical!

  3. If Rooney was more concerned about winning than he is only having 3 head coaches Trip Tomlin would be looking for a job. So, it could have been worse. The bottom line is that teams usually want the best available HC. Dallas is an exception that comes to mind, as JJ only wants a puppet on the sideline…

  4. Is he referring to women, since only two of them were hired as assistant coaches?

  5. The minorities were disappointing for this hiring cycle. Fixed that for you, Mike.

  6. I work in Inclusion & Diversity. The numbers are not always black and white (pun intended), nor is any legitimate diversity program truly all about the numbers. Even the most inclusive employers have ebbs and flows. The bigger question is whether the pipeline of assistants is strong and growing — if so, that’ll eventually up the number of minority HCs.

  7. I hate this kind of talk…..if somebody can help an NFL team win, I really dont see color of skin holding them back. Teams are too desperate for wins to not consider someone because of their skin color.

  8. Disappointing hiring cycle, Tomlin? Part of hiring cycles is the firing cycles and you sir are lucky to have a job. I guess you’re right, us fans are very disappointed you didn’t get replaced.

  9. Since Dan Rooney — the namesake of the Rooney Rule — died two years ago this month, NFL teams have made 15 head coaching hires with Flores and Steve Wilks the only African-Americans. Wilks lasted only one season in Arizona.

Is Vance Joseph just super tanned or something?

  10. If Tomlin was coaching for any other team then he wouldn’t be on the minority list either. I don’t think the Rooney rule is a horrible thing i think most owners/GM’s have already made up their mind who they want before the present HC is fired. Seems like most teams do the interview just to comply.

  11. Don’t worry Tomlin, Pittsburgh will be looking for your replacement at the end of this upcoming season. Maybe they can find a quality minority head coach to replace you, as you only represent the minority portion of those qualifications.

  12. What ever happened to employment based on job performance and not some specific quota number that must be met?

  13. GM’s and owners see how loose of a ship you run in Pittsburgh and they don’t want to go down that same path. Seems obvious to a trained observer. Plus you let your QB run all the talent out of the building so you can see why teams are skeptical!

Wow, the upvotes on this one! GMs and owners see the ship “you” run? As in, Tomlin? As in Mike Tomlin is the blueprint for all African Americans?

And teams are skeptical about hiring minority coaches because…Tomlin isn’t the most successful guy? Why not just say “they’re all alike” in plain English, dude?

Man, the flat-out racist trash comments allowed by PFT.

  14. So sick of this crap! Teams hire best coaches available and what about Hispanics, Asians and the other ethnic backgrounds. They owe you NOTHING

  15. No reported violations of the Rooney rule this hiring cycle, so it sounds like it was a huge success! The Rooney rule says nothing of hiring minorities, only interviewing them.

  16. Not really if you take into account African Americans make up about 13% of the population. Why isn’t Tomlin concerned there isn’t any Asian, Arab, Persian, Native American or female head coaches 🤔

Are you saying he runs a loose ship because is black? Because it certainly sounds like that is what you are saying.

  18. Minorities get plenty of opportunities to aspire to HC’s. With as much money that is involved in these franchises winning not to mention the sheer importance of winning in the NFL, it’s stupid to think that any owner or GM would not hire someone simply because of their race/ethnicity if that person could be successful.

He was hired Jan 2017. So technically he is right because it was more than 2 years ago. But yeah

OK so using your logic, if there’s one bad minority coach then none deserve the opportunity. That’s the same thoughts that led to the rule in the first place.

  21. Mike T, lets just stick the job you were hired for or there’s gonna be one less minority. You have a Hall of fame qb and Steeler nation is still waiting for you to get your own job done.

  22. This IS a disappointing cycle, regarding always talking about the newly hired coaches skin color. Pretty repugnant, that while pining for rights for certain colors of people, that you are putting down the hires of other fellow coaches for their LACK of “color”. Why does it matter what the pigment of the coaches skin is??? Why don’t we focus on their abilities to lead men on the field.

  23. “Mike Tomlin, who is entering his 13th season with the Steelers, now is one of only three African-American head coaches in the league. Anthony Lynn and new Dolphins coach Brian Flores are the others.”

The thing about your statement is when hiring many candidates job performance is based upon opportunities and experiences. A few years ago, minoirites were only viewed as players (and certainly not QBs). So the quota system evolved due to a thing called DISCRIMINATION which something white priviliged males fail to accept. Many of you got your union job because of your father, brother or uncle. It wan’t based upon your “performance”. Wake up!

Like every civil rights law on the books, it began with Blacks. Decades later it applies to every minority. Wake up! Blacks are not the only minority in USA. Before long, you will be in the minority. You so worried about Black people, you don’t see that other races of people have are now living in this country.

  26. Nothing like coming on PFT to be reminded that there’s a very long way to go wihen it comes to things like race.

OK let’s do the math, 15 hires and 2 were black, thats 13% so considering the percentage of population that’s black(12%) you don’t have anything to complain about. Now Hispanics on the other hand(@18% of the pop.) have a damn good reason to complain! And what about the numbers that show over the last 20yrs all the black HCs been given the opportunity and failed? Do people ever take into consideration that once these people in the leadership roles(GM/owners) see so many black HCs that have been given the chance and failed(it has to be in the very high 90% range) they’re kind of reluctant to give even more a shot!

Another thing, anyone that thinks these owners/GMs would hire a black HC just to set him up to fail and waste years towards their team rebuilding is a stone cold idiot! Let’s get to the facts: HCs are hired because the onwer/GM believes thats the best person for the job, HCs get fired because they couldn’t do the job and it didn’t matter if they were black, white, brown or purple. So let’s not sugar coat it and act like they’re just firing the minorites because these owners/GMs have it out for them becaue they are black, if that were the case they wouldn’t have hired them in the first place! Yes it’s sad that some only get one year, but the fact is there have been a lot more white HCs that’ve been fired after one year than blacks HCs.

BTW there’s an old saying in the NFL: there’s only two kinds of HCs in the NFL, those that have been fired and those that are going to be fired!

And why is it that no one complains about the lack of white players @ just 28%? NOT A PEEP ABOUT THAT? You’d think in a league that some claim to be so racist they wouldn’t have 70% of the players being black! Fact is all these owners/GMs care about now days is winning and if you don’t do that you’ll be gone, doesn’t matter what color of skin they have so let’s stop all the B S that this is a racist thing. Up till 15-20yrs ago I’d have agreed 100% but not now days.

  28. Like every civil rights law on the books, it began with Blacks. Decades later it applies to every minority. Wake up! Blacks are not the only minority in USA. Before long, you will be in the minority. You so worried about Black people, you don’t see that other races of people have are now living in this country.
    ==========================================================================================

This is not about civil rights. This is about the NFL. You have more black players in the NFL than any other race. Almost 70% of the players in the NFL are Black. Yet getting a head coaching job is really tough for African Americans. 3 out of 32 teams, that’s the problem.

    __________________________________________________

OK thats 9.4% of NFL HCs that are black as compared to 12% of the population, so up until this season when 4 black HCs were fired they were WAY over the average having nearly 22% black HCs in the league starting the 2018 season, I didn’t hear any complaining about it then, but as soon as it dropped under 12% that racist card gets played! Now the question is: can you make a case that any of those black HCs deserved to keep their job? Hue, Lewis, Joseph, well I can’t! Some will say Wilks deserved more than a year but the Cards went from an 8-8 team to a 3-13 team! Also theres the fact that theres been many white HC that were fired after only one year for the same reason so it’s really not like its anything new. Now hispanics on the other hand should be the ones complaining seeing how they make up 18% of the population and there’s what 1 hispanic HC?

This reminds me of years ago when(probably these same people) were all the complaining about not enough black QBs in the NFL, well they get their chances now days and guess what? Just like white QBs most can’t pass the test so they get benched or cut. Fact is now days for HCs it all comes down to winning, win and keep your job lose and you’re gone, skin color doesn’t seem to matter now days, its whats in the W-L columns!

BTW if anything I believe that most black HCs are being given extra time because these owners/GM don’t want to look like they’re the least bit racist.

Tomlin held a fundraiser for Hillary. He’s a leftist democrat. They live, eat and breathe skin color.

  31. Insanity! NOT A PEEP! keeps sticking in my mind after reading several comments. Mike Tomlin open your eyes outside of coaching jobs. Not only is the NFL filled with minority players, but so is the NBA, and MLB. And for that matter, news, movies, tv, advertising, music….all loaded with minorities! And honestly, not gonna be too much longer until whites are the minority of this country. Then what…..you think white people will be crying that it’s not fair? Nope! Because it will forever be thrown in their face that at one point they ruled the country and they owned slaves. Ridiculous. Everyone just man up. Instead of crying about it on media outlets tell your acquaintances to work harder, read, study, be the best candidate possible. Yesterday I was watching the news and it was the community leaders speaking for Nipsey Hussle, the main speaker, said something along the lines of forget black lives matter, if we keep shooting each other. And black lives matter is a useless phrase because black lives don’t matter to blacks. I say for any athletes who kneel during the national anthem, to get off your knees and go to these poor communities with trucks filled of footballs, basketballs or any sporting equipment and play with these kids. Show them they can do it too. I know several athletes do nice things for the community. With the money they all make, they can do so much more. And the contradiction to all of this, is this nation is continuously helping people who don’t help themselves. It all comes down to the individuals work ethic, no matter the race, color, language, planet.

  32. ***FACT IS: That 2019 will mark the FIRST TIME since 2003 that the percentage of black HCs in the NFL fell to under 12%(percentage of blacks is 12.1%) and in 12 out of the 15yrs since the Rooney Rule was instituted the percentage of black NFL HCs was in-between 18-25%, but no one was complaining then!

So my question is this, why do people A-L-W-A-Y-S just cherry-pick those numbers that ONLY benefit their argument! If anything let’s use ALL of the numbers over the last 10-15yr, not just the 1 or 2 that help make your point, it makes you look like you have tunnel-vision and you can’t see the big picture!

  33. Talk of discrimination or racism in the NFL is absurd. If there is any organization that is completely colorblind, the NFL is right in there at the top of the list. When you look at the number of black players vs the number of black people as a percentage of the general population, it is obvious it has nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with the persons abilities. The same holds true for coaches, or trainers, or any other individual involved. I have always said they will hire a purple alien Martian as head coach if he can win. There is simply too much money involved to care one iota about racial profile. Period.

  34. I think it was a bad year for minority receivers and running backs. Not enough Wes Welkers and McCaffreys given opportunities.

  35. To put a little perspective on this… the % of African-American head coaches is slightly behind the US Population % of African-Americans. 1 more African-American head coach, and they’d be almost identical at about 13%.

  36. Point taken Mike, but this was also a disappointing coaching cycle from minorities, so there’s that as well.
