Patriots extend special teamer Brandon King

Patriots coach Bill Belichick likes special teams contributors, and he’s just locked up one of his best.

The Patriots have signed Brandon King to a two-year contract extension, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Although King’s listed position is linebacker, he actually hasn’t played a single snap on defense in his NFL career. But King has been a major contributor on special teams in all four of his NFL seasons, and Belichick thinks that makes him well worth a roster spot.

In addition to kicker, punter and long snapper, Belichick doesn’t hesitate to use roster spots on players who play special teams almost exclusively. Last year, those special teams players included King, Nate Ebner and Matthew Slater. The Patriots are usually among the best teams in the league in the kicking game, and that’s in part because Belichick prioritizes special teams when setting his roster.

  1. Too many teams try to get as many “big play” guys as they can, not realizing that even the best big play guys only make their big plays around ten percent of the time. Meantime, Dark Hoodie keeps signing “consistent and solid play” guys and winning championships.

  2. Oooh, the Patriots extended a special teamer…..that means he’s a HoF’er for sure, right Pats fans?

So you are not a fan. OK.

If you watch the games once in a while you would see his name on a bunch of huge special teams plays.

Often those plays are for a loss.

  4. whenwilliteverend… I’m assuming that’s your name based on the Patriots 20 year reign. BB, unlike alot of coaches, puts a great emphasis on special teams. That aspect of the game was not up to the standards he deems acceptable last year. I bet it will be a lot better this year. BB is a great coach and he knows a football team consists of 53 players (plus PS), the best 53 will be out there for a reason and purpose. To help the team win.

  5. maybe this is an example of why no one can duplicate BB’s dynasty. who else knows how to use a guy like that even if they had the confidence to use up a roster spot on him?

No, it actually means that he has been a productive enough special teams player that BB is willing to devote a roster spot to him. And since BB has won more than any other HC / GM, it kinda seems like he knows what he’s doing.

  7. Not a HOFer but odds are good he will get another ring. Ever hear of Earthwind Moreland? Patriots signed him and he stepped in when ty law got hurt and missed the entire playoffs the year they beat the eagles in the Superbowl. Freddie Mitchell did not even know his name… He got a ring.
