Already the best 40+ QB, Brady not slowing down

Tom Brady will be 42 before the 2019 NFL season begins, and he says it’s not his last season — not even close to his last season. Whether or not he really can play to 45 or beyond, however, he’s already the best quarterback ever past the age of 40.

Brady has already thrown for 8,932 yards and 61 touchdown passes in regular-season games since turning 40, with an additional 2,085 yards and 10 touchdown passes in postseason games. That’s easily the best total for any quarterback after his 40th birthday.

Prior to Brady, Brett Favre and Warren Moon were the two most productive quarterbacks after their 40th birthdays, but neither was even close to Brady. Favre threw for 5,874 yards and 36 touchdowns after turning 40, with an additional 544 yards and five touchdowns in the playoffs. Moon totaled 5,538 passing yards and 37 touchdowns after his 40th birthday. He never got to the playoffs after turning 40.

At some point, Brady has to slow down, but jokes about his speed on the treadmill aside, he hasn’t shown a lot of evidence of that so far. And at this point, anything he does is just adding to his status as already the best quarterback ever to play past 40.

  1. There will be those that will point to his declining stats in the recent and upcoming years. But it is the Patriots offense that is again morphing. When the rest of the league is going all in for passing, the Patriots will be a run first offense, with a loaded offensive line, and a deep, talented backfield.
Michel, Burkhead, and now Damien Harris, along with James White. The speedy, lighter defenses will be bulldozed by a heavy dose of a power running game.

  2. My eight year old does not know life without the Pats in the AFC Championship. He’s been to see Brady at Foxboro and had his heart ripped out by him. There won’t ever be another one. He’s got an unprecedented drive and more grit than kids today possess. I hope he keeps going and goes out on his own terms.

  3. Yeah he looks good now, but won’t last more than 2 more Super Bowls, maybe 3 at most.

  4. “…the best quarterback ever to play past 40.”

Correction: “…the best quarterback ever to play.”

….and he’s able to have these things because unlike his peers he has resisted the urge to grab every single last dollar off of the negotiating table.

  6. He completes two passes…..slants and outs and the receivers on PEDs do the rest. Nothing amazing about that.

Another thing to take into account – Dolphin fans are butt hurt jealous. Nothing amazing about that either.

  8. Part of the reason players slow down is that they lose the drive to truly grind day in and day out. Professional football is grueling, and not just physically. People focus on just the physical aspect.

When you have millions in the bank and the only reason left to play is “the love of the game”, most players look for a way out (and who can blame them anyway). Brady is a rare bird.

We all remember when 31 teams cheated the Patriots out of 2 draft picks because they all wanted a chance to “win” a participation trophy.

That’s the only explanation that makes sense when you understand that the Colts footballs were also deflated. But the Colts did not have draft picks stolen because the Colts were not earning superbowl wins. The NFL only stole draft picks from the Patriots because the NFL was desperate create league parity.

The NFL is still hiding the PSI information from the 2015 NFL season because science exposed the fraud. The NFL didn’t want to have to give the stolen draft picks back to the Patriots. Not when the Patriots were running up the scores on the darlings of the league.

Everyone remembers how the Patriots smoked the Colts in the 2nd half of that game after the league added air to the footballs of both teams. The Patriots scored 28 points while shutting out the Colts in the 2nd half. The final score was 45 to 7. Plus all the superbowl appearances and wins after that game, while the NFL was closely monitoring the Patriots footballs. So much for that “advantage” myth.

  10. We Patriots fans need to enjoy every single game he plays because when he retires its going to be a different story. Bill does a great job hiding weaknesses but you cannot hide a weakness at the quarterback position and the chances of the team getting another high quality QB is not that high.

The team will never crash and burn under Bill but we as fans better get used to different results!

Apart from that ranking being done before the playoffs in which Brees once again fell short, also on that list above Brady are 2 QBs he outperformed in the playoffs (Mahomes, Rivers) and Luck who also fell short. Brady threw 400yds more than Brees in 2018 (despite playing more games outside and more games away from southern climes (and actually has more career yards than Brees if you include postseason). Brady also has over 50 more wins than Brees, 22 more playoff wins than Brees, 8 more SB appearances and 5 more wins.

  14. Aside from all the cheating and officials help time & time again and a soft division he is no different from any other human,it will cave in for him suddenly and with little warning just like it did with peyton,he was an offsides away from having a 3int game against KC and costing his team the game,he did nothing in the crappiest SB ever, but then nobody did,he wont be in the league in a yr. Im betting he’s traded or cut after this season.

  15. I feel his numbers will drop but still be a 10 Quaterback in the league till the day he retires.I cant see him bottoming out like Peyton did his last year.If your a Fan of the NFL and the history of the sport enjoy it because you will never see this again. He is the Last of the Legends

  16. Bradys “side business” is the paint shop/banner hangers that repainted BBs boat and now the two jets the Patriots own and that hangs all the Superbowl and AFC championship banners in the stadium. His other “side business” is “Parade Route Planner” for the New England teams. He has made at minimum 200 million.

  17. Tom’s human. He makes mistakes but he never stops coming at his opponent. He started off this year’s super bowl with a bad interception and told the guys in the huddle that would be his last mistake in the game.

In clutch time, he completed three third down passes for touchdowns using the same route tree while picking three different receivers based on what the defense gave him, setting up the touchdown to close it out.

I’m not from Virginia, not a Dolphins fan and I don’t troll other team’s threads and talk trash about great players but I do appreciate greatness and Brady, and the Patriots as a whole, are great.

All that “cheating” nonsense has been debunked countless times.
At this point what you call “cheating” is just drivel being repeated by jealous parrots.

Actual football fans understand that there are bad calls in football games while the patriots are playing in a different stadium. Do you believe that those bad calls are also being done to some how benefit the patriots?

    not much different..brady had a
mediocre year and super bowl and bb haf jimmyg ready to go for perennial 10-6+ seasons.

bb will likely do the same with stidham as he did for brady and jimmyg

note how bb is building defense and run game first again like he did from 2001-2006.

    pay attention

brady is not perfect even if the GOAT

  21. Brady’s 2018 numbers were very typical of his HOF career. His receiver group was one of the less adept of his career and he had an inordinate number of INTs due to the receiver. In addition, several other QBs had perhaps their best year ever making his totals look less impressive than they might have otherwise. So, with the new influx of receiver talent things bode well for him to put up some pretty eye popping numbers. There is an 85% chance he plays until he’s 45 and a 33% chance he plays until he’s 50, depending on how flexible he will allow his role to be.

As far as the notion that the Pats will turn into more of a running team, they ran the ball more in 2016 than last season. The number of rushing attempts will be dictated more by the game situations they are in rather than some overall design. You don’t take the ball out of the GOAT’s hands unless it’s to exploit foolhardy overcompensation by an opponent. As BB has said, they will run more if it’s being effective. He didn’t use a first round pick on a receiver for the first time as Pats HC because he plans on going smash-mouth.

  22. I hope he does keep playing. He started declining last year, as even ardent Pats fans will admit. He’s not some myth – he’ll be 42, and has played a few extra seasons because of the consistent postseason success.

He has dominated the Bills so thoroughly in his career. I’d love to see Buffalo turn the tables for his last few years and get a few sweeps in. It would be great to see him try to hang in there longer than he should, like so many great athletes have before.

  23. He is the greatest performer in American sports history. I would not rule out him playing in another Super Bowl if they get the bye again.

The funny bit will be when they reinstate Josh Gordon in November / December.

  24. I’m not one to say we will never see another QB, Head Coach or team again because we should have learned by now…never say never. However this team, the way they have won games they should have lost in simply incredible. Great to see real NFL fans of other teams showing their sincere appreciation of this team, this head coach and this QB Tom Brady because if you love a sport like we all do on this site it’s a given you have to appreciate this team and all that they have accomplished. For now just enjoy this league and all it has to offer for true blue professional football fans everywhere. Best to know, what and when to appreciate the legends of the game and why the league is better off for it.

  25. as father time always wins in the end …. lets just enjoy the end of a career that was rather improbable for a six round draft pick … as sure would be great to see the team load up with weapons for one or maybe two more good runs for lombardi seven which would be heaven ….. and for all the haters out there sorta funny having read tammy boy here still leads the league in jersey sales, so lets hope no major injuries to him or the important dudes on the team n these last few years as the inevitable transition comes and wondering post brady how will the next twenty years become ??? … but must say it have been a very enjoyable sans NYG gittin real lucky there bucky run

  26. I have never understood the argument that Brady is “just a system QB,” or as some great football minds say, “he has two passes the slant and out,” or those that call him “noodle arm”!

If this was true, than multiple decade loser teams, such as the Dolphins, for example, should put in the exact same, weak and boring offense where some noodle armed QB hides behind a big offensive line.

Football history is being made, we should all enjoy it. Those of us that were Grogan fans back in the day and loved the team when they were a perennial .500 team, on good years, have enjoyed the ride. For my son that was born into a Pats loving family in 2004, he has been spoiled but his love for the team won’t fade.

  27. The GOAT is going to be driving a Bulldozer, albeit a Shelby Bulldozer, that go’s 0-100yds in 10+ minute 18 play drives, using his impeccable sense of timing to toss it through the curves and outrun the competition on the straightaways, as needed. This could add 5 more years to his career. Maybe he plays till 50.

  28. GOAT. Stop with the Aaron Rogers nonsense just stop. It’s not a beauty contest and at some point it has to translate to WINNING on the field. Father Time just got his butt whupped!

Yes he did! And on the 7th day he rested!

  31. He is cheating Father Time. Of course, they are now trying to rewrite the rules because he is so good, winning a Super Bowl and AFC CG on first drive overtime touchdowns.

You can suspend him, change the rules on him, or worse, but he will keep coming back and getting it done.

Pat’s fans are the least gracious fans in Football.
Just the New England way, I suppose…
    ————————————————————————————–
Who are the “most gracious fans”? Just curious.

  33. he’s better than any of em over 40, under 40, retired, still playing, ever did play or ever will play in our life time.

  34. Per PFF:
    In 2018
Drew was a he only NFL QB to rate in the top 5 of all six category-
Accuracy per route depth (all 3 levels)
Accuracy in terms of Separation (all 3)
    At 40

  35. Why do we “need to be gracious”? Pick the crumbs up and be happy.

I love all the haters.. They change their minds on what he is. First its”he is a system QB” next he is “the GOAT” their confusion makes me happy. He only throws 2 passes they say.. Should be easy to defend then huh???
Just do what every Player does and say.. That’s Tom Brady over there. Might want to take notes instead of just watching… Might learn sumpin.

One one hand you are convinced the Bills will dominate after Brady declines / retires, but on the other hand you seem to be arguing that Brady is not the only reason NE wins.

Odds are the next HC and QB in NE – whenever they eventually take over – will still be far better than what the Bills come up with.

  37. Actuallly, if you want to bring odds into the equation, the chances are much greater that the Patriots are in for a few decades of futility ahead.

If not for an offsides, Brady throws a game ending 3rd pick against KC. He mustered one good TD drive against LA.

    He’s declining.

Odds might apply if the results were based on random chance. But of course they’re not – they are based on ownership having a clue, hiring the right people and letting them do their jobs. The Patriots have demonstrated the ability to do that; the Pegulas, on the other hand, have demonstrated incompetence for years now.

As for Brady, the would-be “3rd pick” against KC hit Gronkowski in the hands. The second pick hit Edelman in the hands. In your world this is somehow evidence of decline, while Eli throwing a ball up for grabs and having a receiver catch it with his helmet makes him an all-time great?

  39. Hopefully he keeps declining, he only had the 5th best rating of his career last year. Stuff we Patriots fans have to deal with… Amazing. We should get paid.

  40. For all you haters out there that are hoping for the Patriots to be on the “cliff”. They prepare for the future. They’re quietly building a defense that dominated at the end of the year and a running game that takes advantage of smaller defenses geared to stop the pass. They do not make the “big splashes” in FA that everyone hinges their hopes on in the “off-season. They get players like van noy, guy, Pennel, Simon etc. and use them accordingly. They saw Sony decline a little in the playoffs and drafted a bruising breather. They need a TE.. nope.. They draft/sign players that are 6-2+,over 200lbs that can line up anywhere. Get ready haters.. To cry… Get ready.

  41. Yes, he suffered quite the decline last year. Let’s see … he hung 28 on San Diego before halftime and then 37 on Kansas City in Arrowhead (21 in the 4th quarter or OT to include converting how many 3rd and 10 or 4th down passes).

    Sheesh!

  42. Maybe not a cliff. I think while BB is at the helm, they’ll stay fairly competitive. But what is that…3 more years? 4?

The run of dominance is definitely over.

  43. he’s the best decision making QB ever. which, quite frankly, is the entire point of the position. i’ll take that any day over arm talent.
