Matt LaFleur: Choosing wideouts like “filling out a basketball roster”

With the Bucks in the Eastern Conference Finals, basketball is in the air in Wisconsin right now.

Packers players like David Bakhtiari and Aaron Rodgers have been taking in games (and taking in beers) and Packers head coach Matt LaFleur is making cross-sport analogies during the team’s organized team activities. LaFleur said this week that picking a wide receiver group is like “filling out a basketball roster.”

“You need guys that are at a certain area of expertise, and then it’s our job as coaches to put those guys into position where they can showcase that skill set … You’re not going to go out and play with five point guards,” LaFleur said, via the team’s website. “You need a speed guy. You need a guy that’s got short-area quickness … we’d like to have a couple guys that are versatile enough to do both of those things.”

Davante Adams is the clear No. 1 wideout in Green Bay and LaFleur will build out the rest of the group around him. With the players still working to get the offense down, it might be a while before anything else is set in stone.

  1. How about a guy with a great pair of hands, with jump/reach, physique, power, playbook and route/situation smarts, and who doesn’t shy at blocking. Sorry Matt but merely fast or quick, depending on going deep routes or across/underneath, is a very simplistic vision.

  2. Receivers are very dependent on the guy throwing them the ball, no matter how good they are. Some diva receivers think THEY make the QB in the NFL, not the other way around. Gregg Jennings and his crazy sister bashed Rodgers and burned their way out of Green Bay to the Vikings and said that Jennings was the one who made Rodgers look good. Jennings quickly found out how wrong he was. Instead of receiving Rodgers’ passes right into his hands in full stride, he now saw balls sail over his head, bounce, or be thrown to the defender.

  3. There’s a lot to choose from. The been-there, has-beens in the Minnesota secondary are in for a treat.

An aging and injury prone QB, a group of mostly inexperienced wide receivers and an aging and ineffective TE.

Yeah, it does sound like an easy day at the office for the Vikings secondary.

Sure. A healthy Rodgers has been the bane of the division rivals for more than a decade. People forget, last season he played eight games with a broken leg, two more with a strained hamstring, and missed the last in concussion protocol. He still outperformed your guarantee over the course of the season. Guess what? He’s healthy.

Besides, all the second-year players for Green Bay are going to tear it up this year. That’s not a prediction. That’s Zimmer talking.

  6. In the division, the packers have:

    The best rusher in ypc.
The best QB (and it’s not close).
    The best Wideout.

    Possibly a vastly improved defense.

But hey, the Vikings signed some of their own free agents they got that goin’ for’em. Which is nice.

  7. Fraud Rodgers was (stupidly) challenged to chug a beer, accepted, and it took all his worth to drink from 3/4 to 1/4 in a small cup and could not finish. Look, if you don’t like beer, fine. But then don’t pretend like you do for your image.

Cousins has more wins and better stats since 2015 than your QB
Diggs and Thielen are considered the best WR duo in the NFL
Cook, if healthy, is in the tier of Bell and Elliot

Packers haven’t beaten the Vikings in almost 3 years. GB, a fourth in the NORTH!

How would you know what he’s thinking? You’re the fraud. You have issues.

  10. Diggs a no-show at OTA’s. I guess he’s already a legend in his own mind, because of one never-to-be-repeated lucky, fluky win. That’s called; dedication to your craft.

    _________

Alright, let’s take this one at a time.

1: Aaron Rodgers was rated by ProFootball Focus as the #5 QB last season.
    Kirk Cousins, #15.

2: Diggs and Thielen are the best receiving duo in the NFL?
By who, and under what standard?
    Cite references, please.

3: How do you even begin to compare Dalvin Cook to either Bell or Elliot.
Give me one stat or shred of proof that would lead any sane NFL viewer reason to believe this.
As it stands, ProFootball Focus ranked Cook as the 5th best RB.
And that was in the NFC North.

4: Green Bay has made monumental changes to both their organization and their roster.
They still have plenty of room under the salary cap, giving them sufficient flexibility as the season wears on and in the near future.
How all of these changes shape up is anybody’s guess, but I suspect they’ll stave off 4th place.
Meanwhile, the Vikings desperately resigned much of their 8-7-1 (1-6 against teams with a .500 or better record.) talent.
And unfortunately, questionable financial dealings have left this team with almost all their cap room used up for the next several seasons. (They are already 3 million over the cap in 2020 as it is)
So seriously, who’s team is really trending closer to 4th place?

So what. The all-time series is nearly even, which means they play each other tough. Even in two decades of Packer Dark Years, which was during the Vikings Heyday* (*a period of local notoriety during which the Vikings accrued an undetermined number of attaboy banners,) they went 15-14, 14-15 against each other. Your “streak” means nothing, unless the Vikings notched, at minimum, a SuperBowl appearance. Did they? I don’t think so. As far as I’m concerned, the Vikings are on a one-game win streak over the Packers. Yawn.

  13. Why is the creepy person asking where I am? Very disturbing.

It’s Memorial Day Weekend. Get out and live a life.

    Moving on…

Davante, G-Mo, MVS, and EQ is a nice top 4 group of WR’s.

There are 8 other WR’s that will be battling in training camp to make this team. Kumerow, and J’Mon have a inside track to make the team, but Allen Lazard is also a player to keep a eye on in camp. Trevor Davis, Derrius Shepherd and Jawill Davis will be trying to win the punt and kick return jobs.

Rodgers is six games over .500 in those four years. Cousins in only two games over .500 in that stretch. As for stats, Rodgers has 112 TDs in those four years, while Cousins has 111. Of course Rodgers has played in nine fewer games too. Do you even want to discuss INTs?

Diggs and Thielen are considered the best WR duo in the NFL

….by Vikings fans, and nobody else, homer.

Cook, if healthy, is in the tier of Bell and Elliot

No he’s not. At least, he’s never been healthy enough to prove that. But if Rodgers is healthy, he is, without doubt, one of the top two QBs in the NFL, which counts for way more than a RB anyway. I guess let’s see which one stays healthy this year.

Packers haven’t beaten the Vikings in almost 3 years. GB, a fourth in the NORTH!

Stop posting, your credibility is gone even with fellow packer fans. Whoever you are.

  17. Aaron Rodgers has more yards, nowhere near the interceptions, and nearly the same amount of TDs as Kirk Cousins on a BROKEN LEG.

Even at this point in their careers, there isn’t one GM who would look at Rodgers and Cousins and think “I’d rather have Cousins.”

But the Vikes won the division a bunch in the 70s

    Well done.

  18. “But if Rodgers is healthy, he is, without doubt, one of the top two QBs in the NFL…”

Rodgers was healthy for about 20 minutes of game one last year. He netted about 20 yards of offense and zero points.

The Packers did better with him “injured” than when he was healthy.

But that only netted 6 wins.

No one considers Rodgers one of the top two QBs today, outside of delusional Packer fans.

  19. Oddly, I read an article just this week from Sporting News ranking all the QBs, and Rodgers was 2nd.

I get that Vikings fans wouldn’t know QB talent if it smacked them in the face. I mean, to this day, they still defend passing on Aaron Rodgers twice, for two people who aren’t even in the NFL anymore.

  20. Oh, and in case anyone was wondering, their rankings for the rest of the north:

    Mitch at 15
    Matt at 17
    Kirk at 18.

Congrats! You’ve got a worse than average QB on a crippling contract!!

    ——–
That made me want to do some research, I was looking at this thing called the standings – Rodgers won only 6 games and they year before the team only won 7th – both third place finishes.

And yet Kirk is 4-1-1 against Erin and Matt has won 4 straight against the Packers. Also Erin is the only veteran QB in the NFL that is 0-37 when behind by 1 or more points in the 4th quarter against teams with winning records. I believe Kerry Collins and Trent Dilfer are ahead of him on that list, by a lot.

  25. theclulessgoatherder: “No one considers Rodgers one of the top two QBs today, outside of delusional Packer fans.”

Just in: “Sporting News ranks Aaron Rodgers No. 2 quarterback in NFL, By BRIAN JONES May 20, 2019, 11:33 AM.”

  26. I guess you’ll learn as you progress on to middle school.

Someone says “no one thinks this” and then I show that someone thinks this.

It’s basic. Do you still wear pull-ups?

  27. BRIAN JONES rated Rodgers #2? Well that settles it then. Wait a minute, ESPN QBR has Rodgers as number 16. Actually who cares about any of it? Oh, that’s right, Packer fans only when the Packer is rated high (not necessarily #1 even). It’s all they have anymore during the Packers current rebuild.

  28. I love these Vikings fans. They’re an endless source of comedy.

Most Vikings fans that I’ve met are pretty great. We share a mutual respect.

Because team he cheers for a team that has never won a super bowl means he can’t comment on the current sorry state of the Packers? But you get to comment because the team you cheer for has won a super bowl? As if the team you cheer having won a super bowl in the past grants you a right to comment on the current state of something.

Just another example of packer fan arrogance and packer fans thinking they are better than others because of the team that they cheer for.
