Baker Mayfield on Duke Johnson: Join us or get out of the way

Browns running back Duke Johnson said Tuesday that he remains in favor of a trade that would send him away from Cleveland, which led to a question for quarterback Baker Mayfield about whether that makes it awkward for Johnson to be at the team’s minicamp.

Mayfield said it “can be a stir-up in the media,” but denied that it is awkward for anyone other than Johnson. He called Johnson’s situation “self-inflicted” and that the question for the running back is “what are you doing right now?”

“That’s something that we’ve been dealing with for a while,” Mayfield said, via Cleveland.com. “If we have guys that want to be here, they’ll show that, they’ll voice that. Obviously he’s going to handle his stuff how he wants, but you’re either on this train or you’re not, it’s moving. You can get out of the way or you can join us, so it is what it is.”

Johnson said on Tuesday that he won’t be a “disgruntled employee” and that he resisted doing any interviews before minicamp in order to keep the focus on the team rather than himself. He also added that he asked for a trade after the Browns were shopping him this offseason, although that detail may not be playing much of a role in Mayfield’s analysis of the situation.

  1. Brady would have said, “You’ll need to ask Coach Belichick…” Belichick would have said, “Duke’s here and participating.” He would then repeat that line again and again as reporters asked the same, or slightly differently worded question, over and over. No drama…

  2. Oh Boo Hoo ! Johnson got mad that the Browns were taking calls on possible trades for him so he demands to be traded. If someones calling any team about acquiring one of their good, but not absolute untouchable players, they would be fools to not listen to offers. The irony here is that Duke tells ESPN he understands it’s a business, then gets mad because the Browns are exercising due diligence in their business. Duke was a very good player on horrible Browns teams. Now he is a good player on a good Browns team. Aye Carumba….just go away Duke

  3. Jumping onto a moving train might be dangerous, depending on several factors. Speed and spot on the Box Car is most important. If you’re right in front of the train and it’s going 60mph, it’s going to be tough. If you’re trying to jump onto a car that already has no room, it’s tough. Still; Not as tough as being on the caboose that the train engineer is trying to uncouple.

This will be interesting to track as the season progresses.

  4. The guy is the 3rd RB and being shopped… don’t blame him for wanting more of a role after what he has shown so far.

Mayfield should refrain from talking about his teammates to the media.

  5. This is who Mayfield is and who he has always been. You’re with him or against him. Don’t forget that Duke started complaining last year that he wasn’t getting enough touches AFTER the Browns started winning. The guy was happy getting his carries on a 1-31 team and became a malcontent when they started using Chubb and started winning. Mayfield knows this guy’s deal.

  6. Guy is a mental midget and won’t last long at all. This rah rah stuff is cool and all in HS/College but it’s the NFL, calling out one of the vets in your second year when you just went 7-8-1 and more than half your TD’s came against the dregs of the league is a laughably poor attempt at being an alpha when money is involved and the other guy is more established than you. The players on that roster have known Duke Johnson a lot longer than they have known Baker. Brown’s fans like to troll the Steelers about Roethlisberger’s leadership but at least he has a couple of rings to his name.

  7. Hey Baker… I think he’s made it clear that he wants to be traded. It’s always amazing how people can tell someone else what to do, and then when it’s them with a problem it’s always different.

  8. Baker is going to find out that after some film out on him things will be a lot harder. They are acting like they are contenders already and haven’t won anything.

  9. Hey Baker, know your role. You’ve literally been in the NFL for 1 season. I sense Roethlisberger 2.0

Funny, I always thought you wanted your QB to take a leadership role.

And being a leader I would prefer a leader. Leadership 101…do not ever pass the buck to the next man up.

Ah yes, the repeat things over and over game. That’s the mature way to handle it.

  12. I think this is the most over-hyped team this off season. Everyone has them penciled in for the playoffs, but I’m not so sure.
I have always liked the Browns and will root for them, but people need to back off the bandwagon a bit.

Official number of Lego sets put together this year.

  14. this guy have RG3 written all over him. At least RG3 got hurt. I was rooting for him last year.. he is showing more of his prick side now… I hope they crash and burn.

  15. Baker has a good point. Whatever is gonna happen, it’s better that is happens soon. If Duke is traded or released, do it before camp. If he’s gonna stay, he should be committed.

  16. Mayfield’s personality is one reason this team is fun to watch and follow. I’m not a Browns fan per se but I enjoyed them last season when he became the starter. I don’t always agree with Baker but he’s got talent and his brashness makes for some entertainment. Looking forward to watching them this season.

In this case I suspect he took the opportunity of answering the question about Johnson to send a message to everyone else. I get this is only his 2nd year but this is his team.

  17. Baker, Landry, and Beckham all on the same team. Things could be really really good or really really bad.

  18. It’s official. This is Baker’s team now, for better or worse.

  19. Stupid little marathon? What’s a great marathon? Calling for another bomb should put you in prison. One of the great old cities in America and one that’s turning out championship teams in all three major sports. Signed Eagles fan.

  20. And the blitzing linebacker said “thanks Duke”, as Mayfield lying on the ground asking “where are we at”?

  21. Social media generation has caused softness all over the world.

Baker needs to say these things to Dukes face and say nothing to the media.

  22. And this is how a fractured locker room starts.
Stay out of other professionals off field business and if you’re going to call them out for their on field business, do it behind closed doors.
Publicly humiliating someone seldom makes them want to step up their game at the pro level.

I think it was Duke that said he favored a trade in no way MAD that they are entertaining offers.

  24. Send him somewhere he can be fantasy-relevant again! That Browns backfield is going to be a fantasy nightmare this season.

Duke has already said he’s not going to be disgruntled.
