Patrick Mahomes’ summer assignment: Improving footwork

AP

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn’t letting his Most Valuable Player trophy go to his head.

Mahomes thinks he has plenty to work on before training camp, and he told Dianna Russini of ESPN that he’ll spend his summer between minicamp and training camp focused on footwork.

“My footwork,” Mahomes said. “I make a lot of off-scheduled plays, scrambling around and throwing the ball, but there’s so many little plays that I’ll miss, ’cause my feet aren’t in the right position and I rely too much on my arm.”

Talented young players sometimes run the risk of relying so much on their natural talent that they don’t develop the finer points of their games, and by vowing not to rely too much on his arm, Mahomes is recognizing that. The Chiefs have challenged Mahomes to improve the details of quarterback play, and it may be scary for the rest of the league to consider that Mahomes has plenty he can improve.

  1. Mahomes is highly overrated. The NFL defenses will figure him out and he’ll come crashing down.
The media did this SAME thing with Doug Williams, Kordell Stewart, Vick, McNabb, Tavaris Jackson, Byron Leftwich, RG3, Newton, Wilson, and Murray.

  2. Talented dude for sure.
The general culture around that team is concerning though.
They seem to have issues with judging character.

  3. Is he going to watch Footloose and get pointers from Kevin Bacon?

  4. Chiefs have become Americas Team. They could win 9 out of the next 10 Super Bowls and Mahomes could throw 500 touchdowns.
After retirement he will be elected president of the United states.

Please elaborate on what this “SAME thing” is? They are different style quarterbacks with varying degrees of success, including winning and appearing in Super Bowls.

  6. I wouldn’t worry about mahomes.

The nfl is pushing him as the face of the league.

So… expect A LOT of “helpful” calls by nfl officials
while he runs around looking for receivers.

  7. “The media did this SAME thing with Doug Williams, Kordell Stewart, Vick, McNabb, Tavaris Jackson, Byron Leftwich, RG3, Newton, Wilson, and Murray.”

None of those QBs had anything approaching a season like Mahomes had last year. Yes, now DCs have had a full season of film and a full offseason to study it so it will be harder for him this season to recreate that success, but your point is poorly made.

They also have film of The Master, Bill Belicheck besting them in the AFCCG.

    Copycat league.

And PMII has a full season of film on those defenses.

True. And I love watching PM; I hope to watch him for many years to come.

But BB keeps changing it up.

Films of his D have been available for decades.

  11. There’s one nugget that Coach Reid has said about Mahomes. The best thing about him is that he doesn’t make the same mistake on the football field twice.

He’s going to be scary. Anybody talking trash should just hope 15 doesn’t line up against you any time soon. He’s gonna take this league down.

“Same thing” is dog whistle for their race. I noticed his list didn’t include Steve Young a HOF scrambling QB and right away I knew what he meant.

Why don’t you go ahead say exactly what you mean. The keyboard courage of racists never ceases to amaze me. Mahomes is a qb on the rise who barring injury will be one of the top 3 qbs in the league within the next 2 yrs. The fact that he’s willing to work on his craft and critique himself makes he and the Chiefs a problem for the rest of the league for the next 10 yrs or more.

  14. I like Mahomes.

He showed heart when my Ravens pummeled him and he still came back and beat them in overtime.

If they get him some more defensive help, he will get a ring at some point for sure.

  15. I like Mahomes too. He needs to improve his footwork to be able to make throws from the pocket. Team will try to contain him. Steve Young is a good example, he said he learned that he needed to be able to make the throws from the pocket and not scramble so much. Broken plays make good highlights but to be able to execute the plays as they are designed to be run will make him so much better. That will be scary.

Ummmmm…..Wilson is one of the top QBs in the NFL by any reasonable measurement

Usually I would agree with this statement but Mahomes is on a whole different level. As a broncos fan I am not looking forward to facing him twice a year for the next decade. They have something special.

Mahomes has the best qb rating in the nfl from the pocket last year.

  19. KC native.. That’s true.. To a degree. When teams took away his 1st read he tended to scramble. If he can master subtle movements, instead of running to keep a play alive, he will be much more effective. He even admitted that by saying he missed alot of throws. He got a cannon for an arm and can make throws out of position, but when he is in position he is a work of art.

  20. I’m a Patriots fan and he missed alot of throws because he was out of position. He gets his mechanics under control and understands defenses better he will be one of the greats.

  21. “The NFL defenses will figure him out and he’ll come crashing down.”

Why aren’t they saying that about Mitch Trubisky (who had a pretty pedestrian season)? Instead, they say,”He’ll improve. He’s still learning. It takes QBs three or four years to figure things out.

BTW, Mitch was foolishly selected ahead of Mahomes.

  22. They can try to figure him out, the man threw 50 tds. He is accurate, great long ball and is already working on his flaws. Once he figures out what defenses are doing he will tear them apart.

Actually they were bested by an offsides penalty but I guess you forgot that part.
