NFL planned meeting with Tyreek Hill raises more questions than it answers

The NFL plans to meet with Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill, reportedly on Wednesday. So what does it all mean?

The news raises more questions than it answers, given that the league previously has suggested that it is deferring to the still-pending proceeding that resulted in Hill’s three-year-old son being removed from the custody of Hill and the boy’s mother. Unless that proceeding has ended, or unless the league has secured permission from the court to speak to Hill, the league’s decision to move forward conflicts with its prior messages.

The league also will reportedly meet with Hill on multiple occasions, which can be regarded as an indication that Hill is being investigated for multiple potential violations of the Personal Conduct Policy. As previously explained, Hill could in theory be disciplined for making threats against Crystal Espinal, and for contributing to conditions that resulted in Hill’s child being removed from his custody.

However it plays out, the league seems to realize that something tangible needs to happen before training camp opens. Hovering over the situation is Hill’s history of admitted violence against Espinal, coupled with the chilling suggestion that further violence against Espinal is possible, when he said to her earlier this year during an argument over whether their child respects Hill or is terrified of him, “You need to be terrified of me too, bitch.”

It’s hard to imagine the NFL not punishing that comment, given Hill’s past conduct (for which he was never suspended by the league) and the NFL’s decision in 2018 to suspend Ravens cornerback Jimmy Smith for making threats and engaging in emotional abuse with respect to the mother of his child.

  1. Didn’t the police come out and say recently they w erent actively investigating Hill? If so it seems like the time to interview him since there doesn’t appear to be legal proceedings forthcoming and it gives them plenty of time to investigate between the meeting and training camp to get the decision right or at least make an informed decision.

  2. The League is scrambling to find any facts quickly enough to justify their pre-determined punishment before training camp opens.

  3. Just have Mahomes mentor him. I mean that’s what Gordon is getting and Goodell and Kraft are sipping their brandy together deciding when to let Gordo. back in after multiple multiple league infractions.

  4. Hill was never suspended from the league for his past conduct because he was in college when it happened and they handled the discipline…

  5. “Just let mahomes mentor him” oh please….not every team can have the luxury of having the commish in their back pocket
Between letting the druggie play again to not letting qb’s get hit so old man Tom doesn’t throw a hip to that bogus 4 game vacation errrrr suspension so old man Tom is well rested to changing the pass interference calls to benefit old man noodle arm tom….such a pathetic display of favoritism from the goodell for the patriots. So disgusting

  6. I feel sure that Goodell will make a ‘business decision’ on this one – Hill will get a bare minimum suspension (4 games) and they’ll ride out the criticism.

They can’t afford to hobble the main threat to the Patriots in the AFC – lots of people are fed up with their unprecedented run of success.

  7. Hill may genuinely be a bad guy. It sure sounds it. But some couples are just poison together. They won’t stay away from each other and only bad things happen when they are together. Time for one of these two to walk away. Being associated with each other will only add more fodder for the police and the tabloids. I know there is a kid involved, but is truly the home life they want to model? One of you walk away, you are hurting each other and the child.

  9. Goodell and the NFL shield are such hypocrites cause Jimmy Smith,Tyreek, others who are not convicted are suspended on threats and OJ Simpson is still welcomed at the NFL hall of fame and his bust is still enshrined.

  10. Article 46 sits buried under Goodell’s desk as Hunt and Hill play in the league after disgusting domestics for AFC teams not named NE.

If either one of those gutless pukes played in NE, they would havebeen suspended indefinitely a long time ago.

Then again, Kraft would have cut them personally.

  11. Pretty sure just last week the police made it clear they were done investigating and unless there is new evidence they aren’t pressing charges. Seems like the perfect time for the league to start its process.

  12. @Roger Alamode
How can you compare a guy that has a problem with Marijuana, a now legal drug in most states and certainly one that does less damage than alcohol or pain killers to a guy that beat his pregnant girlfriend and now at the very least threatened her and put their child in harms way? This goes beyond any silly fandom and is simple human decency-this guy should not have the privilege of playing in the NFL.

  13. Goodell does and will continue to do whatever the OwnerGroup tells him to do! That’s why he has lifetime job security! The decisions coming out of that league office are inconsistent, not equitable ,and certainly have no objectivity. Roger does what he is told to do when he is told to do it( by the owners).

  14. Absolutely ludicrous he’s still in the league with the despicable acts he’s committed. Minimum one year suspension, I’d prefer out of the league permanently.

  15. It seems very likely the NFL will suspend him for the comment on the audiotape, but to my knowledge, the entirety of it has never been heard by the public. I wonder why whoever released it in the first place decided to provide an incomplete version. I’m just curious if we are not privy to additional context due to the incomplete nature of the released version.

In any event, there are still gaps in this whole saga. I’ve the feeling those hoping for a major suspension are going to be disappointed when the league makes its final decision. My guess is he’ll actually miss 2-4 games.

Its actually a tough thing to have a mentally ill addict into your home in an attempt to help them. Have you ever tried it?

Seriously? Kraft and Goodell are in kahoots? I’m not a Pats fan but do you remember the draft picks, fine, and quarter of a season for their franchise quarterback? How about the release of the PSI data after they kept track of it for a year? I remember one of those things because the latter never happened.

I despise NE, but when their coaching staff openly mocks Goodell with clown attire you have to stop pretending they’re in bed together. They’re not. Kraft and Goodell have been at a party together, but to claim they’re collaborating on decisions like villains in some 80’s cartoon is laughable.

Wow comparing marijuana use to spousal and child abuse? Thats a shame.

  20. It’s all a smokescreen that the NFL will call “due diligence”. This is how they’ll justify letting him off without any penalty at all or a laughably small one. That situation is a ticking time bomb.

  21. Whatever happens the Goodell and the nfl will surely handle it wrong as the past bears that out over and over again from being too heavy handed to too easy they rarely get the right pulse. In this case a year suspension is warranted. So they will suspend him 2-4 games, surely. Everybody thinks the nfl is prospering under Rogers “leadership” but the facts say they are prospering in spite of it. A team of chimps could run the nfl and they still would make a profit. The guy simply can’t get out of his own way.

  22. Vaphinfan.. While your at it do some research on Ricky Williams, Mercury Morris and Cecil Collins before you talk about anyone else. Then see how Don Shula became their coach. Then research the Mud Bowl.

Gordon served his suspension. For drugs, mind you, not for punching a 4 year old in the stomach after forcing him to hold his arms out. If you think that’s equivalent, you are a terrible person. Gordon is suspended again, and there is no indication he will play. What’s not fair about that? Does every story have to be about the Patriots for you? Can you just not deal with the fact they are better than the foolish Dolphins? I guess not.

    —-

Not. Plus given that everyone here already has pre-determined his penalty why shouldn’t his employer? The facts are in evidence (there is a tape you know….) plus prior history.

Can’t have it both ways. You either punish on suspicion or you interview and get facts. In my opinion, both would be fine and should happen in concert. In the non-NFL world they call it administrative leave pending an investigation. In the NFL it is CEL pending an investigation. I think they have more than enough to punish for at least some of the allegations.

    And should.

  25. Let’s just stop with all this and let the courts handle it. As long as a court in the United States allowed Adrian Peterson to walk away a free man, and as long as he’s been welcomed back into the NFL, this is all just a big waste of time. The NFL is the best in the world at providing entertainment. There are a lot of great young men that play pro football and do a lot of good things in the community. I guess it’s boring to write about those guys all the time. Good news just doesn’t sell. But why is Tyreke Hill’s kid so important, and Adrian Peterson’s kids are not? If we cared about the kids we’d be demanding Peterson gets locked up for good.

  26. Gordon isn’t getting any special treatment, he’s suspended indefinitely and missed a SB winning season. For anyone to compare an addict who’s hurt NO ONE but himself to a lowlife who allegedly beat up a 2 year old severe enough to break his arm plus his college history of violence against women shows a real lack of intelligence. Grow up!

I know you are nothing but a knuckle dragging troll, but I’ll bite.

One is someone who is a menace to himself.

The other is alleged to be a menace to others.

See the difference? No, you don’t. Why am I not surprised.

  28. First off, let’s state the obvious: If Hill were a back-up offensive lineman, the Chiefs would have cut him in a New York minute. Now then, there’s a 3-year-old with a broken arm. Who broke his arm? His mother? Was it an accident? No and no. The taped conversation between Hill and his girlfriend reveals that she covered up for him during the police investigation. Charges couldn’t be filed because the cops couldn’t determine conclusively which parent broke the child’s arm. But we all know who did. The guy who said that she should be terrified of him “too,” the word “too” indicating that Hill acknowledges that the little boy is terrified of his father. And of course we have the prior incident at Oklahoma State in which Hill choked his girlfriend and punched her in the stomach when she was pregnant with the boy. Hill as earned a two-year league ban, at the very least, and I cannot how the Chiefs won’t choose to cut him, considering the precedent the team set in its dismissal of Kareem Hunt. Hill should be toast. Will he be? Star players equal more money, so ….

So you are really comparing a guy smoking weed to a guy abusing his wife and child? As a fellow Dolphins’ fan I find you a complete embarrassment.

  30. His previous college town wrist slap conviction (for an attempted beating abortion) was still on the books when he was drafted, so that makes him a two time loser which should be a permanent suspension with an option to petition for reinstatement after one-year. All the owners gave Roger absolute power when it comes to these type of issues. But, guessing Andy is begging the league to allow him to play, if he is allowed to play again and either his woman beating or alleged child beating happen again Reid and Dorsey (or any other coach GM who sign him) should be permanently gone from the league and Hunt and any Hunt family member should lose their right to own an NFL team (or any owner who signs him). There needs to be some real risk for signing players like Hill, Hunt or Church.

  31. NONE of this matters!
    WHy?
Simple, if the NFL suspends Hill, the media will rip the NFL and will claim that Hill hasn’t been charged with a crime and should be left alone.
If the NFL does not suspend Hill, the media will rip the NFL and claim that the media isn’t “sensitive to domestic violence by players” (amazingly enough the NFLPA does not get ripped and is utterly silent on the matter of players committing DV while under contract).
So the NFL loses no matter what.
Hill wins no matter how many times he beats a woman b/c the NFLPA and the media have his back.

  32. This is just standard procedure, and just for show. The NFL wants to show they did their OWN investigation, which consists of making sure there are no loose ends out there or anything that could come back to bite them once they declare “we couldnt find anything either”.

  33. “Does every story have to be about the Patriots for you? Can you just not deal with the fact they are better than the foolish Dolphins? I guess not.”

Lolz this guy often claims “nobody outside of NE cares about the Pats” and then goes on to comment about the Pats on almost every single article on the site including many that have nothing to do with the Patriots.

I have a client that is a group of psychologists that I’m sure would love to do a case study on him related to “sports psychoses” because he’s certainly disturbed.

  34. “Hill wins no matter how many times he beats a woman b/c the NFLPA and the media have his back.”

You do realize PFT is “media” correct? And that PFT has repeated called for his suspension? Or are you just typing without actually reading anything other than the headline?

Exactly. He’s paid a boatload of money to take as much heat as possible off of the owners.

  36. Hill hasn’ Been cut because Kareem Hunt was then the Browns signed him. PFT lauded the browns for doing so. Why should the team just cut him when some other team will sign him. They will be praised and the chiefs will appear to be naive.

  37. even if he doesnt go down hard this time, he will screw up again. Men who beat women and kids dont change.

  38. If he played for the Raiders he would have been suspended,or banned a long long time ago!

  39. The audio tape was weak for threats. There was no statement about harming her. There’s an interpretation that she should be terrified of him leaving her since he’s the breadwinner. You want to try him for his reprehensible conduct in college and that’s not fair or right. The injury to the child’s arm was not his fault and some hack radio personality stirred the pot and created a story where there was none. The police and CPS investigated and it wasn’t conclusive. So now NFL, please weigh in?!?
