Patrick Mahomes throws football out of Arrowhead Stadium

Getty Images

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes displayed one of the more impressive feats of arm strength you’ll ever see on Friday.

Mahomes was on the field at Arrowhead Stadium when a camera on the KCTV helicopter caught him throwing a football up, up and all the way out of the stadium. The ball went over the top row of seats and was seen rolling on the concourse below.

The Uncle Rico-style throw has racked up plenty of views on social media. The ability to throw a football up and out of a stadium does not really have a lot of relevance to a football game, but it is an impressive-looking feat.

Mahomes looked in 2018 like the most impressive young quarterback to come along in years. This is just one more impressive display of his talents.

  1. That is impressive…..after all, let’s not forget, he did have a couple extra weeks of rest after loosing the AFC championship game to work on it!!!

The Kansas City Chiefs are built for a dynasty run, so eith get on the train……or get flattened. Andy and Patrick are the face of the league.
All teams are now trying to do things “The Chiefs Way”
Kansas City Chiefs = America’s Team

  3. Doug Whaley’s parting ‘gift’ to the Bills – trading the pick to KC that got them Mahomes……

  4. Hes had a fun offseason. He will have another one this season with a bunch of extra days when hes bounced again from the playoffs.

  5. Idk how healthy or unhealthy that might be
And or how risky of a practice test is for young Patrick’s shoulder longevity

    I’ve played QB
And practiced throwing balls as far up vertically as possible, punt-style throwing, etc

Now because I’m suffering shoulder ailments etc
Specialists are now wondering how much of a part those type throws have played

I just hope he’s not doing more harm than good unawares

  6. Pretty impressive, what an arm, what a talent. I hope he can help the Chiefs get to the promised land, Andy, Lamar and Co. really deserve it.

  7. ” all teams are trying to do it the chiefs way”

Are you serious? The Patriots aren’t and look where it got them. The Chiefs’ way is getting bounced in the playoffs and not winning the whole thing. You Chiefs’ fans are hysterically delusional.

  8. OBJ threw the ball 100 yards, so. I like Mahomes but let’s see if he can have some consistency in reading a defense. Alex tanney has an accuracy video on YouTube and Lamar Jackson threw a ball 90 yds. Reminds me of a few years back when presscot and Carr had their fans flying high.

  9. That’s the worst piece of footage I’ve ever seen. Shot from a cell phone or what? (Turn volume down or you just get the awful sounds of the chopper blade)

  10. Whoopdefriggindo.

If strong arms were the measuring stick of quarterbacks then Josh Allen would be very good, but God knows he stinks.

  11. well, when arrowhead stadium isnt so high, then yeah, it is possible. try doing that at cleveland browns stadium. those upper decks are higher than skyscrapers.

and besides, we all know arm strength means squat if your on a team that always chokes when it counts.

    GO BROWNS!!! HOORAH!!!

  12. Hey…Kyle Boller could thrown football thru the goalpost from 50yds while on his knees. What do the 2 have in common? Neither won a Super Bowl! Freaks: yes! Champs: Nada.

  13. Mahomes would be a great QB even if he had an average arm. The QB position is 90% mental, and that’s where Mahomes excels. The physical stuff is amazing, but that’s not why he’s winning so many football games at such a young age and with hardly any experience. The scary thing is he hasn’t even scratched the surface yet.

  15. Classless beats jealous everyday of the week. Why are we classless exactly? By bragging on our team winning superbowls? I guess that’s worse than being able to throw a football out of a stadium. If you can forsee the Patriots “future”, tell us forseer when we can expect to see your team win a Superbowl. Hilarious.

  16. Ask yourself why he didn’t slow down a bit in last TD drive in AFCCG that would have put Chiefs in SB.

Did he forget how he lost to Brady in regular season?

You will see if he is a real deal when he doesn’t have Tyreek Hill.

  17. So many QBs look like phenoms in there first year as a starter. Then after the defenses have tape to study, a lot of the phenoms come back down to earth. In no way shape or form to I want or expect Mahomes to fall, I will hold back anointing him the next best thing until year three or four of such success…

  18. Kid has insane ability. FINALLY KC has a franchise QB.

    ——————-
From neck down. Usually, that is not what it takes you to promised land.

  19. As long as he can complete the 2 yard passes when he needs to on 3rd and 2.
    ——————————————
This is much harder than you can imagine, because defenders look at QB in the eyes, and they will hold the line of scrimmage.

  20. Throwing ball out of the stadium implies he threw all across the field 110 yards and then out of the stadium ie from the opposite end zone

This feat no doubt a cool achievement is probably a high punt,

  21. Steve Pallazzolo of PFF has some interesting information about accurate QBs throwing the ball 10+ yds down field the last 3 years. Brady is #1. He also has interesting information on QBs who have thrown more passes at or behind the line of scrimmage for the past 3 years…. Brady wasn’t even in the top ten. Big Ben was #1 with 379 and Flacco was #10 with 274.Here you haters thought Brady only throws short passes.

  22. On 2nd and long, either you throw 10+ yd pass (with only 30% completion rate) twice to get first down, or your throw dink n dunk (with 70% completion rate) twice to get first down.

Question : which one gives you better chance getting first down?

Answer : the one with only 30% completion rate.

That is why dink n dunk is so hard for QB to command, no other QB could depend on it to score enough to win.

  23. New England fans are “classless “??? It wasn’t a New England fan aiming a laser at TB12 during the AFC championship game ! Now that’s not only classless but dangerous!! Oh, ignorant too!

  24. Mahomes is a freak and is not human. I would expect Rodgers to answer this challenge about as well as he does chugging a beer. Rodgers is all hype and reputation, nothing special about his arm, except to Packer fans…

  25. Chiefs fans rejoice in promised glory from fat Andy all the while Eagles fans are laughing because they’ve read the book already and know the ending ends in tragedy!

Are you serious Man? Consistency reading a defense? Did you even watch any NFL games last year? 50 TD’s and 5000 yards passing against 11 INT’s 3 of which were last minute hail Mary throws into the end zone at the end of the half. Tell me when Dak Prescott won the NFL MVP again? Or set records that no QB in the NFL has ever done? Not to mention in his 1st year as a starter. I think Mahomes can read defenses just fine.

  27. Anyone who isn’t a flake would be embarrassed to be a fan of such a degenerate franchise. I would expect a classy kid like Mahomes to depart via free agency the first chance he gets.

  28. How old is Mahomes? This stunt serves no real purpose other than to flex his massive arrogant and egotistical ego. Color me unimpressed.

  29. Mahomes (and Mayfield for that matter) sure seem like the real deal. And regardless of my team loyalties, the sports fan in me always roots for great match ups between great athletes.

That said, it wasn’t long ago when RG3 and Kapernick were the new face of the NFL, and we were going to see over a decade of this “new style of QB facing off”.

Maybe pump the brakes a little bit, enjoy watching these guys improve, and hope for good health.

  30. Cheifs fans are starting to sound like Seahawk fans a few yrs ago. The next dynasty. How’d that work out? Glanville used to win bets on Farve doing the same thing. Guess Farve won 1 SBIWL.

Patriots fans are classless. Enjoy losing when Brady retires. Your dynasty will soon be a distant memory.
    ————————-

That’s a chuckle. The Pats DID make it to a Superbowl in the 80’s and 90’s before Bill and Tom. Hmm, lets see a SB every 10 years- sounds about like A. Rodgers run in GB or Brees? Not a slam against Rodgers- he’s awesome, just proving a point.

As long as the Kraft’s are owners the Pats will be fine. The Krafts have had Parcell’s, Pete Carrol, and B. Bellichik as coaches- how many other franchises have similar HC choices? They had QB succession of Bledsoe, Brady, and would have had Jimmy G if Brady wasn’t the GOAT. What about any of that points to the Pats being a bad team after Bill and Tom go? Quality ownership is the #1 reason for sustained team success.

Not going to be a Dynasty like they are now, but certainly not trash either, and no reason to think they won’t be a long time quality team like the Steelers- might not win, but are always in the mix.

  32. As a Chiefs fan…..gotta love all the hate from other teams fans. Must mean Mr. Mahomes is kinda good! Ultimate goal is for Pat and the Chiefs to be as hated as the Patriots!

  33. The bouncing football startled a passing motorist who swerved into a gasoline tanker, which was knocked into a filling station, shearing off the pumps and igniting the spewing gasoline, before crashing into a local kindergarten in session for the day.

  34. If this guy can have a year like last and advance his team to the Super Bowl, he can figure on getting a huge paycheck. I usually couldn’t give a rat’s rear about the Chiefs, but with Patrick as a player, I watch every game I can get. He is amazing and has intangibles that even some of the players claiming to be HOF QB’s (pointing at Erwin Wawgers in Green Bay) don’t even have.

Go, Patrick! Show what a real young pro football QB looks like and that the Philthy Fragile Fool is not one; Lamar is not one. Dakota is a running back.

  35. more media hype. just like the ” no look pass ” that other QBs have done but the media didnt make a huge deal out of it. reminds me of OBJ making a one handed catch and the media gushes over it, something chris carter did almost every game.

  36. Flash in the pan. He’ll be a back-up in Washington in 3 years. Book it.

  37. ” all teams are trying to do it the chiefs way”

Are you serious? The Patriots aren’t and look where it got them. The Chiefs’ way is getting bounced in the playoffs and not winning the whole thing. You Chiefs’ fans are hysterically delusional.

Don’t know if I agree with the whole “Chiefs Way” statement, but it is rather curious why the Patriots made the off season moves they made.. I mean how many wideouts did they sign?? Its almost like they’re planning to be in shoot-outs, or like they feel they have to keep up with a certain offense that they couldn’t consistently stop..

Media hype? The dude threw 50 tds. Lol media hype. Media hype is like when carr said Khalil could get 30 sacks and khalil turned around and said carr could throw 50 or 60 tds lol. Now THAT is media hype.

  39. I mean how many wideouts did they sign??

Find gold among stones, that is what Belichick has done since he saw Shane Vereen’s 11 catches in SB against Seahawks.

He can do it because Brady doesn’t need top WR.

  40. Why is it that its always mostly Patriot fans posting on anything relating Mahomes?? I mean their team the SB, so why threatened by a young QB?? Its not like you see them on all the Rams articles or anything, but they come out in droves for all things Mahomes related… Feeling insecure about the AFCCG??

  41. Why is it that its always mostly Patriot fans posting on anything relating Mahomes??
    ——————————————————————-
    Not just Pats fans.

People learn from their experience on other QB, and know you can’t judge a QB based on their first year, especially if the QB has tons of supporting around him.

Mahomes was overhyped too much. Ask yourself, do you think he could have scored 20 pts against Pats defense (which was not among the best) without Tyreek Hill?

  42. I am certainly not a Chiefs fan, but Mahomes is great now, and will get even better. His father was a pro athlete, and it shows in the way Mahomes plays – his brain is his best asset even though he is athletically gifted in so many ways.

The hype is actually with Brady. New England continues to win most of their games when he doesn’t play. Had D. Brown not been offside, Brady would have rightfully received the blame for the Pats losing to the Chiefs – he played poorly … and had Brown not been offside the game would’ve been over at that point as a Chiefs win.

When you see things as bad as Brown lining up offside in that situation, The Falcons passing when anything else would wrap up a SB win, and Seattle throwing from the 1 to lose a SB, you have to wonder if the fix is in to make sure NE wins.

  43. Just imagine if Mahomes gets the Patriot Privilege from the refs and Goodell like Brady. He would have 11 rings.

  44. Yes I’m serious, reading defenses. Apparently, you being a chiefs fan, you didn’t read the article where Mahomes said himself that he missed alot of throws because he was out of position. If he read the defense, he would have known from where the pressure was coming from and adjusted accordingly instead of running around. Until he gets the mental part of football he will just be “a highlight” and be 0-4 against playoff teams and almost won.

Hill had exactly one catch in the AFCCG and Mahomes scored 31 points in one half.. 24 in the 4th quarter! So yes!

Belichick drafted a highly regarded receiver in the 1st round, signed Damaryus Thomas, and he’s hoping that Josh Gordon is able to come back. Gold among stones my arse! He knows his team has to keep pace and were fortunate last year..

Well we do agree they had the best noncheating qb in football but it was in his later years. And that’s when defensive backs were allowed to play defense and qbs were allowed to get hit.

  50. Awesome since so many schemes rely on throwing the ball to the parking lot. Yes, that’s heavy sarcasm because plenty of NFL QB’s have huge arms. I’m not denying this guys potential at all. I just find this whole conversation is not based on reality. I wish him the best other why though.

  51. Patriots fans sure seem to be spending a lot of time worrying about the QB they barely got by in the AFC championship game!! The end in near pats fans….maybe not this year but soon…enjoy it while it lasts

  52. All the NFL has to do is extend the end zone into the parking lot and Mahomes will break all sorts of records…

    *****
“Barely got by”?! The Pats won the game and went on to win the Super Bowl. A win by 1 is as good as a win by 100, “barely” isn’t a measure! And if I recall, weren’t the Chiefs the number 1 seed?

  54. Patriots fans sure seem to be spending a lot of time worrying about the QB they barely got by

    ———

    Barely? I call it dominant.

    Twice, last year, don’t forget.

  55. If by “keeping up” you mean signing/drafting WRs that are big and strong enough to catch balls in traffic and able blockers in the run game and whose route tree enables them to line up anywhere, then yes. Or how about drafting/signing defensive player that rank high in QB pressures, another yes. Or drafting a RB that is good between the tackles and is a good addition to the stable of RBs they already have, another yes. Or drafting Oline men, yes. But if by “keeping up” you mean trading or reaching for WRs / TEs because of need, then no. BB has learned about building a team and he has learned well… Others not so much.

  56. @mikespillane337

    ——————————————————————————————

That was a reference to his FOOTWORK! He was saying that his feet were out of position causing his body not be in a position to make specific throws. Coaches and scouts raved about his football acumen, IQ and photographic memory. Also in 3 of the 4 losses he had the Chiefs leading with less than 1:59 left in each of those games… Please don’t try to pass yourself off as knowledgeable about this again..

  57. That’s Tom Brady in a vintage Patriots’ red jersey throwing the ball out of the stadium. It completes a trifecta of 100 percent verified feats – the 61 mph throw and the 5.17 40 preceeding.

    torgow,

Is he still scary without Tyreek Hill?
    ______________________________________

Yes! Mahomes made plays. Unlike those making biased comments hoping he is a fluke without really watching him. Chiefs fans got to see the upgrade Mahome brought over Alex Smith. Yes Alex Smith is not Elite QB but he was a very good QB.

Mahomes made plays and I believe set or tied Drew Breeze’s record for throwing to 15 different receivers in a single season. So yes, He can function without Hill.

People keep ignoring that the Chiefs failed last year, because of the defense Not the offense. The Chiefs scored over 24 points in every game they played. That has all been changed. The Defense may still be bad, but they made major overhauls.

  59. He’s a beast. He will only get better. It’s just a matter of time when he hoists that Lombardi trophy. Whether he will win multiple depends on his future massive contract or contracts.

  60. Insane how many haters there are out there for Mahomes. The guy says and does everything exactly the way an athlete should at an incredibly young age, has generational talent across the board, just won an MVP in first year as a starter and had his team one drive away from the Super Bowl after throwing for 5,000 yards and 50 TD in the regular season, and yet half the people on this board seem to hate the kid and be rooting for his failure. Which has no chance of happening, by the way. Anyone who saw him play enough last year understands that, barring injury, he will own this league for 10+ years.

I get it, jealousy brings out the worst in people. I used to feel the same way when other teams drafted franchise QBs and the Chiefs were stuck with the Alex Smith’s of the world, but man the negativity towards this guy is unreal.

    It’s cool though, I’ve been there. I understand. 😉
