Marquez Valdes-Scantling working out with Randy Moss

The Packers used to struggle for ways to stop Randy Moss when he was a receiver for the Vikings, but Moss may wind up helping the team out this year.

Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling‘s offseason work got a rave review from quarterback Aaron Rodgers and part of the reason may be because of who the wideout has been working out with. Valdes-Scantling is being tutored by Moss as he prepares for his second NFL season.

“I’m still training with him now. We train Monday through Thursdays,” Valdes-Scantling said during an appearance on NFL Network. “He’s teaching me the game. He’s a 14-year [veteran], Hall of Famer. Couldn’t ask for a better mentor to go out and teach you how to be a great wide receiver.”

Valdes-Scantling has a similar build to Moss, but the 2018 addition to the Hall of Fame’s advice has not centered on how to be more like him. Valdes-Scantling said Moss has advised him not to “try to emulate anybody” and be his own player once he’s back on the field for the Packers.

If that player can step into a bigger role alongside Davante Adams, that would work out well for Green Bay.

  1. Valdes-Scantling and Adams are going to make things tough for defenses. Along with Geronimo Allison, the Packers have three big, fast WR’s with good hands. And the other young WR, Equanimeous St. Brown, is another big target with speed. If they shore up their offensive line, and get something out of Jimmy Graham, their offense will be plenty good enough because they’ve got a pretty good running game which should be much better under Matt LeFeur than it was under Mike McCarthy, because he actually cares about running the ball.

  2. Randy knows that if he can turn MVS into a respectable receiver then he’ll shoot to the top of the list for coaching jobs. I commend him for taking on such a challenging project.

  3. Randy Moss has been training wide receivers for some time, this is not a one-time gig.

  4. Hmmmm, he will teach him some tricks and then let the Minnesota cornerback’s know what he taught them so they can counter them and intercept the ball. Great move!!!!!

Any Vikings fans want to make a bet that the Packers wife receivers outperform the Vikings wide receivers (again) this year?

Again? What’s your definition of “outperform”? The Vikings’ top two receivers had more catches, yards, and touchdowns than the Packers’ top two, by a wide margin. Extend it to the top three by adding the terrible Laquon Treadwell and the now-gone Randall Cobb and the Vikings’ trio still had more in each category.

I might add that the Vikings’ WRs contributed to more wins, too.

  6. Hopefully he doesn’t recommend the “moon the crowd and bump the goal post with your butt” as a preferred touchdown celebration, but I guess that could be ok too as a signature nod to Moss.

Waffle is referring to his post from a few days ago when he misread current depth chart means this year. He is trying to revive his tired take that was wrong then…

LaFleur arguably has the best team,
Best “team” compared to what? I mean have you seen the Packer’s WR depth chart?
You do realize that the Packer backup receivers gained more yards than the Vikings backups, if we’re just talking about depth here.
Oh wait, the Packers whole receiving corps. gained more yards than the entire Viking receiving corps. too.
    3,106 > 2,989
Hmm……that must really suck when that blows up in your face.”

  8. It’s not odd that Moss would prefer helping a Packer than a Viking player, being familiar first-hand with that dead-end.

  9. Not really surprising Filthy. It’s not “wont”. It’s “doesn’t need to.

The Packers wide outs might be the worst in the league…

  10. Hopefully he won’t teach him to play when he wants to play, and to take the play off entirely when the ball isn’t coming his way….

  11. Remember Moss’s 2nd stint in Minneaopolis (via trade) ended after just 2 games, alledgedly Randy didn’t like the food catering.

How bad was the food for Moss that he is now seeking revenge by training a Packer WR. He didn’t waste his time on any Viking WR’s because they are lacking a franchise QB to get them the ball.

  12. The frequent Viking troll posts on Packer threads is in direct proportion to their frustration of accomplishing absolutely nothing these past two years. The Packers gave them a vacuum in which to do great things, guaranteed things, and they blew it.

Time’s up (and they know it!)

  13. The frequent Packer posts on e eey single Vikings article and even one that have nothing to do with them is nauseating.
It has made me hate Packer fans.

  14. Nothing but positives can come from Randy and MVS training together. I wasn’t aware they were doing it 4 days a week, but that is wonderful! I know they trained together some last summer as well.

I am really looking forward to seeing this WR corp with the new offense in camp. 1 thru 5 is solid(Tae, G-Mo, MVS, EQ, Kumerow) then you have J’Mon Moore and Trevor Davis at #6 and 7. Very nice depth that some teams just don’t have.

Moss has said he sees “greatness” in MVS like many of us do and that’s just grand.👏

  15. Hey remember when the Packers picked Vonnie Holliday two picks before Randy Moss? Then Moss ended the Packers soon to be record home winning streak on a rainy night at Lambeau. Brett Favre actually complained about the weather after the game!! 😂👌🏻

    #SKOL!! 🏈

Moss has never lost a playoff game vs. Green bay! Let that sink in!

It has sunk in…….as deeply as water off the back of a duck. Moss had a losing record against the Packers. He can have all the attaboy banners you’re comfortable giving him. After all, once a Viking, always a Viking.

similarly, aaron rodgers has never lost a playoff game against the vikings.

  18. Still nothing.

    What a bunch of cowards.

The Packers wideouts gained more yardage than did Vikings wideouts last year. Their QB had a broken leg. The playcalling was stale.

The Packers wide receivers group was better than the Vikings wide receivers group. We lost Cobb, but I don’t expect the outcome to change. And deep in your heart, you know that I’m right.

Any Vikings fans want to make a bet that the Packers wife receivers outperform the Vikings wide receivers (again) this year?

I’ll take that bet. But to “outperform” you must include more than yards. Packers receivers racked up a lot of garbage time yards en route to a 2nd straight losing season. When you are playing behind nearly every game, your receivers are going to rack up some garbage yards.

  20. MVS won’t be Moss, but he showed promise last year. I think Moss’s help is less about the rivalry and more about a desire to give something back to the game. NFL players help each other out all the time; Larry Fitzgerald has helped dozens of other receivers.

  21. When retired HOF players volunteer to help your team win even more championships, it truly is humbling.

We are so incredibly blessed to be fans of the greatest team in NFL history.

  22. Interesting story. I’m looking forward to MVS making a significant jump in season two. He has already garnered invaluable experience as a rookie, after he was thrust into a major team role due to injuries.
Hopefully he doesn’t pick up any of Moss’ bad habits and his penchant to misbehave.

  23. Smart move by this young receiver to work with the greatest
WR ever in the NFL. Where is Adams? He is good but come on.

  24. It’s always fun to see Vikings fans spew nonsense that comes back to haunt them.
In 2018, 5 of the Vikings 7 losses were by more than one score. The other two would have been two score losses if not for a super late Vikings score. The Vikings, after being gifted a chance to tie the Packers with what should have been a non call, also added quite a few yards in a game that would have been over.
Conversely, only 3 of the Packers losses were by more than one score. One of them Aaron Rodgers didn’t play. The other two featured late scores by the other team.
The point here is that the Packers were never really playing in “garbage time,” while the Vikings had 8 games where they were playing from waaaaay behind.
I do appreciate you having me look that up for everyone. It shows that if not for one bad Mason Crosby day and one truly bad call, the Packers would have had more wins than the Vikings did.
    Enjoy your day.

Odd that he won’t help any Vikings.

    But not surprising.

That’s because Diggs and Thielen do not need any mentoring, they are the top duo in the league and are a threat to take it to the house any time.Marquez Valdes-Scantling is wise to hit Moss up and learn from a guy who pretty much dominated at his position during his career not too mention scorching your beloved Packers on a yearly basis when he was in Minny..Why wouldn’t you if you were coming into your second year, smart move on his part.Valdes-Scantling has a chance to be one of the top WRs in the league why not speed up the learning process.

Hey remember when the Vikings won the Super Bowl? me neither. lol.

  28. Let’s all hope Moss doesn’t pass on that stench he accumulated in Minnesota of never being able to win a Super Bowl. It followed him his entire career, just like it has for 60 years in Minnesota. MVS deserves better.
