NFL suspends Roc Thomas three games

The NFL has suspended Vikings running back Roc Thomas for three games for violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.

He is allowed to participate in training camp and the preseason.

Thomas admitted to felony marijuana possession in May but was sentenced to probation, with the charge dismissed if he completes conditions of the probationary term. Those include a chemical dependency evaluation and possible treatment; no alcohol or drug use; and random testing.

Officers executed a search warrant on Thomas’ apartment Jan. 16 after complaints about the smell of marijuana. Police found 143 grams of marijuana and nearly $16,000 in cash.

Thomas, 23, played in five games last season and had 10 touches for 51 yards. He played 29 snaps on offense and 59 on special teams.

  1. Doubt he’ll make the squad this year, but would be quite an upgrade for the Packers…

    Roc Thomas = World Class

  3. The nfl has done great justice getting this vicious pot head off the field, while a guy who tried to murder his unborn baby and broke him arm later is still not suspended.

  4. Last year every Viking fan was hailing this guy as “starting caliber” and now he might not make the team?

He’s just 1 of 90 that complete this…how would cheese say it… ah, yes. “Garbage roster.”

A team that was behind by two or more scores in more than half of their games last year and did absolutely nothing to improve.

  5. He’ll be cut, the packers will be the 1st team on the phone, their running game is terrible. They’re going to last in the league. There is plenty of help needed in that crappy backfield.

Oh, something new for you to use in a vain attempt to rationalize the Packers being better than the Vikings. The Vikings were behind by two or more scores in more than half of their games? I don’t follow the Vikings quite as closely as you do, but I can say they didn’t lose all those games because they lost less than half of their games. So now come-from-behind victories (or ties) are a negative?

  7. Roc Thomas played 5 games for the Vikings last year. I find it odd that Viking fan is trying to disown him now.

He made the 53 as a undrafted rookie last year and Viking fan was bragging about him.

All the Vikings really have at RB is Cook and Mattison. Cook is injury prone and Mattison is a untested rookie. Abdullah is there to return kicks.

Boone and Roc Thomas will be very much in the mix in camp.

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

The Packers “garbage roster” Passing Game and Running Game both exceeded that of the Vikings last year. Don’t you find that curious, or at least troublesome? The Vikings might want to hang onto this guy. Have they offered him less for the privilege yet? That should do it, unless he discovers the Vikings are going with same ‘ol, same ‘ol again, even if they turn purple out of pure wash/rinse/repeat frustration. That’s their M.O.

He would be starting caliber on some teams, just not the World Class Minnesota Vikings who have immense depth at Running Back….

Think of it this way……..the Packers aren’t better than the Vikings……..they’re simply not any worse than the Vikings. I hope that helps, because it’s true.

First, if Roc Thomas was starting caliber, some other team would have grabbed him when he was waived by the Vikings in early November in order for them to put him on the practice squad, plus anyone could have then signed him off of the practice squad. The World-Class (which now means slightly better than .500) Vikings were 23rd in yards-per- carry last year. I would have expected to see a guy with starting caliber for other teams get more than 8 handoffs

  12. People wonder why Pats fans have a persecution complex. Well if you changed Vikings to Patriots, there would be a hundred comments on cheating. Every team has players suspended, like the Pats Super Bowl is tainted cause of Edelman.

  13. Hey Robbo,

The Vikings did come back to tie one of those games, thanks to a bad call.

And they came back to win one of the other games.

I’m just here to celebrate the fact that the Packers and Vikings were incredibly similar last year. The Packers were in every single game (except the last one, when Rodgers didn’t play), while the Vikings played good roughly half the time and got destroyed the rest.

And while the Packers tried to do everything they could to improve, the Vikings were like “ummmm….SHAMAR STEPHEN AND A ROOKIE CENTER WILL WIN US THE SUPER BOWL!”

    Good luck with all that!

  14. I liked this guy. How can you not like a football player named Roc? Sorry he screwed up. He was too low on the totem pole for this and is probably done with the Vikes. Maybe they can bring in a player named “Tank”?

Brian Gutekunst going to be blowing this guys phone up if he gets cut

    —–

I doubt he gets cut. If he can play QB he has as good a chance as anyone on that team to beat an opponent with a winning record.

  16. “I don’t follow the Vikings as closely as you do”

Then stop claiming you know anything about any team. You just admitted you don’t follow the NFL closely and that has always been obvious to everyone. It’s ok to admit you are a novice. I would respect the honesty.

I know a lot about all 32 teams. Pay attention. Perhaps you will learn something.👌

Man, fans of teams that put on the field a garbage product these past two years sure are sensitive to that fact.
    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Two years??? Try nearly six decades!!! That can’t be fun. Isn’t that the reason you’re here every day? To make yourself feel better about yourself at the expense of others? I’m sure the Vikings have some sort of plan to dig themselves out of predictable mediocrity. Hang in there.

  18. Thomas was okay, but I always liked Boone better. With the Vikes drafting a RB in the 3rd round, his hold on a position was tenuous in the first place. I don’t recall Vikings fans last year ever calling this guy the best thing since Barry Sanders or anything like the cheesers have said above (which when you come to think of it is a refrain they repeat with most every Viking cast-off), but regardless of talent, if you do the crime Roc old boy, you must do the time.

    _____________

That may be your perspective from the land of free grass, but the rest of us football fans like to pay attention to these things called “standings” and “victories.” The Packers haven’t beaten the Vikings or finished ahead of them in the standings since 2016. I know you like to pretend that all teams that didn’t win the Super Bowl are equivalent, but that’s not the way the real world works.

  20. The big story here should be about the busy-body nosey-@$$ neighbor who died him out for a “smell of marijuana!” I’m in a “Legal State,” (Colorado), don’t smoke weed (my own preference) and HATE baked drivers in front of me waiting for the stop sign to turn green, but couldn’t imagine calling the cops because of something so petty. If the dude’s hurting his significant other, kids or pets, by all means, engage. But a reefer smell? Mind your own business! LOL

  21. Some of you people are like 5 year old girls arguing about poney tails.

5 year old girls – sorry for the insult.

    =================================================================================================
Last year, the Vikings were worse in nearly every facet of the rushing game. Green Bay was 22nd in rushing yards while the Vikings were 30th, and the Packers were 2nd in YPC while the Vikings were 24th. Green Bay was 15th in rush TD’s while the Vikings were 27th. Great defense, best QB in free agency, and a couple of the best receivers in the league. And an allegedly great head coach who took a 13-3 team from 2017 and somehow made them less than the sum of their parts in 2018. One of the more underwhelming coaching jobs you’ll see.

And geez, do you think the two Vikings wide receivers padded all those stats because they were behind by two or more scores in 9 games last season (6 more than the Packers were).
    __________

Hey Tokyo, you might want to check some box scores before you spout off about some arbitrary stat that you think elevates the Packers to the level of the Vikings.

The Packers were behind by two or more scores in NINE games last year, not three. Since that’s the same number as the Vikings, I guess you’d have to conclude that your statement that “the Packers were in every single game (except the last one, when Rodgers didn’t play), while the Vikings played good roughly half the time and got destroyed the rest” is not correct.

Hey, I thought of another way of determining how good a team is. Maybe you should look at the score at the end of the game instead of how many times the team was behind by an arbitrary point spread in the middle of the game.

  24. My way of determining if a team is good is if they make the playoffs.

Not simply if they’re wearing purple and play close to where I live.

The Packers weren’t good last year. Neither were the Vikings. But, as always, Vikings fans don’t care if their team is good. Just as long as the Packers aren’t. Which makes them pretty cool fans. lol

    Enjoy your day.

    ——–
    Good metric waffle
fwiw, my way of determining which team was better was the standings.

Now you can get back to celebrating the Packers glorious off-season with upgrades everywhere, oh my!

  26. Roc Thomas made a mistake. He got caught.
In fact, a large percentage of the population honestly doesn’t even care about his indiscretion.

I certainly wouldn’t view him as some kind of untouchable, nor would I be so quick to throw away a capable reserve or rotational back over something like this.
Especially when this team already employs such a brittle and unproven starter.

I mean seriously, this team and fan base welcomed back a child abusing running back.
And even gave him a raise if I remember correctly.

  27. This is extremely disappointing behavior, and reflects very poorly upon Viking leadership.

Roc is a key rotational player given the history of Delicate Dalvin, and I’m concerned about the Viking season being even worse than I originally predicted.

  28. Thomas just finished any chance he had of staying in Minnesota. With Cook, Mattson and Abdullah already on the roster, Thomas and Mike Boone were basically competing with Abdullah for the #3 spot. Barring any injuries, Thomas is as good as gone.

  29. As a Vikings fan, I truly hope they dump this guy.
    They don’t need a 300th 4th team running back.
Especially one who is such a lame-brain as this guy.
If he can’t stay away from drugs and trouble he is not worth the roster spot.
I truly hope he gets bounced out of the NFL and never gets another change and has to learn the hard way how to make a living.

    Boone is better anyway.

  30. This is really dumb, after the next CBA is signed, there will be no more suspensions for weed. Granted, he got caught and all but still, the NFL needs to take an enlightened outlook on these type of arrests.
