Saints to expand package of tight end plays for Jared Cook

It took a little time for Saints tight end Jared Cook to officially join the team. Since then, the team apparently has been spending plenty of time coming up with ways to use him.

“New tight end comes in for us this year,” coach Sean Payton recently told Chris Simms. “Jared Cook from Oakland. We’re gonna expand the package that includes him.”

In his first season working with Raiders coach Jon Gruden, Cook had a career high in catches (68), yards (896), and touchdowns (six). He once again wanted more than his current team would pay to keep him, and in the same way he jumped from the Packers to the Raiders, Cook jumped from the Raiders to the Saints.

Cook’s two-year, $15 million contract pays out $8 million this year and puts him at the bottom of the top 10 tight ends by salary. With Payton’s ingenuity, Cook could perform like a guy at the top of the top 10 tight ends.

  1. Drew Brees, Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas, & now Cook? As good as they were last year, they might be even better with a top 10 tight end that haven’t had in several years.

  2. If there’s any coach in the league that will use Cook to his fullest potential, it’s Sean Payton. Saints will be tough to beat no doubt.

  3. I’m of the unpopular opinion that the reason he racked those numbers up is because Carr is check down Charlie. He’s worth it IMO, great TE, but let’s see what his production looks like when he doesn’t have a QB that’s afraid of his own shadow.

  4. A number of back up receivers were injured through most of the season last year and Brees’ shoulder was injured, yet, the Saints were still the number one seed and got to the Championship. So if the receivers corp of the Saints get injured up again…with Jared Cook aboard…he is a serious offensive weapon! I believe a great fluctuation between off sets of Thomas and Cook as well as off sets between Merredith, Ginn and Tre’quan and Kirkwood will keep any defense breathing real hard trying to keep up! Now add Kamare and Murray with fgreat receiving hands to fake runs and receive all day long. So the new addition of Cook should prove to be an uplift on the receiving corp and I don’t see how it wouldn’t!

We saw it when he was with the Packers. He was injured for the first half of the year and when he returned, not only did he put up great numbers, the entire offense came to life. I believe he is going to be an absolute MONSTER in New Orleans.

  6. We had Cook in Green Bay for one season and I wish he’d stayed, but the nagging thing about him is he never completely puts it together. Everyone who brings him in raves about his ability, which he then demonstrates, but he never seems to sustain it. Perhaps Payton can get it out of him, but I wonder.
