Baker Mayfield thought the Patriots would trade up to draft him

Baker Mayfield went to Cleveland with the first overall pick in last year’s draft, but that wasn’t what he was expecting to do.

Mayfield told ESPN that before draft day, he didn’t know he was the Browns’ pick — and that he actually thought the Browns were going to pass on him, and the Patriots would trade up to take him at No. 2 overall.

That idea isn’t totally crazy. Eventually, the Patriots are going to need to replace Tom Brady, and Mayfield’s agent said last year that the Patriots, who had two first-round picks and two second-round picks, had explored the possibility of trading all the way up to the second overall pick to draft Mayfield.

But Patriots coach Bill Belichick has generally preferred trading down in the draft, and has never pulled the trigger on a huge trade up like that. And even if Belichick had wanted to, Giants General Manager Dave Gettleman scoffed at trading down from No. 2, because he loved Saquon Barkley so much. It’s awfully unlikely that the Patriots and Giants would have agreed to a trade.

So while the question, “What if Baker Mayfield had succeeded Tom Brady in New England?” might be fun to speculate about, it was never a realistic possibility. Even if one of the people speculating about it was Mayfield himself.

  1. If Belichick could’ve taught Gettleman how to GM the Giants the right way… THEN he’d be a “genius”.

  2. I’m thinking Tom Brady will never retire unless he gets a major injury. If he stays injury free he may be playing until he’s 60.

Doesn’t this guy ever shut up?

Is he not suppose to answer questions during an interview in case he might hurt your feelings?

  4. Why would ANYONE believe that BB would draft a guy like Baker? I mean, Baker is talented and all that, but he doesn’t strike me as a BB kind of guy.

  5. Didn’t the Browns have a losing record last season? Why is this guy talking so much? They seem to have a decent team, so probably he has the urge to grandstand.

  6. is this the same kind of crap rumor that NE was going to trade up for Lamar Jackson too?

All it takes is one agent to start a lie, make it seem real, to get his client picked higher.

NE was never interested in either player.

  7. Even if the Patriots traded all their draft picks (1st-23, 1st-31, 2nd-43, 2nd-63, 3rd-95, 6th-198, 6th-210, 7th-219) they would have still be short a mid 2nd round draft pick to trade all the way up to 2nd overall. It wasn’t possible.

  8. Sad thing is that they probably believe this nonsense. Belichick won with Vinny Testaverde. He won with Matt Cassell and the soon to be exposed Jimmy Garropolo. Pretty sure he didn’t covet a 5 foot 5″ punk to bring into his locker room. But whatever motivates you Baker since the highlight of your year won’t be beating a terrible Cincinnati team again, which is sad enough but this guy said it out loud, lol.

  9. Man his agents had his head spinning didn’t they? Since his mouth has shown a lack of IQ, I wouldn’t doubt that we’ll be seeing “Baker’s money was absconded” articles in later years!

  10. Mayfield plays like a short guy. Maybe that’s why he has an attitude problem.

  11. Even if the Patriots had an interest in Mayfield, the timing just wasn’t right to make that sort of a sacrifice to move up that far in the draft. If the Patriots surround Brady with great weapons and maintain an excellent defense Brady could be effective for quite a few years.

  12. Why would the Patriots waste all that draft capital to put a guy on the bench for a minimum 3 years and probably closer to 5 years? His rookie contract would be up before he ever saw the field.

  13. And when he realized by now that he still wasn’t going to be starting, he would have a humungous hatred and resentment towards Belichick that would dwarf the hatred & resentment he has for Hue Jackson. He would probably hate Brady too.

  14. It made sense to draft Baker and trade Brady. With Brady you have 3 to 4 years max of high level play but with Baker you have at least 15 years. With the way the Patriots defense played in the playoffs plus the run game, all Baker would have had to do was manage games to win the SB.

  15. As a patriots fan I’m glad we didn’t. We dont need the Anti Brady. In 3years we will look for a qb.

Not sure why the down votes. That’s not an opinion, that’s a fact based on all accepted draft value models. The Giants would not have accepted the Patriots two firsts and two seconds for the second overall pick because it was not near enough from a draft value perspective.
