Aaron Rodgers: Billy Turner’s a great addition for us

There’s been plenty of attention paid to changes to the Packers offense this offseason and most of it has focused on how quarterback Aaron Rodgers will adjust to the system head coach Matt LaFleur is installing in Green Bay.

Less attention has been paid to newly acquired members of the unit, especially when compared to the slew of new faces on the defensive side of the ball. One free agent is slated for a starting role this year, however, and Rodgers told Chris Simms that he thinks right guard Billy Turner is going to fill a big role for the Packers this season.

“The guy who won’t get a lot of pub but I’m trying to pub him every chance I can is Bill Turner,” Rodgers said. “He’s going to be a great addition for us. He is going to be a really good addition. He’s a big tough dude, fits in really well, good athlete. He can move in our system because we’re running off the ball. He’s going to be a big part of what we are doing up front because Matt wants to run the ball.”

Turner started 11 games for the Broncos last year and made 12 starts for the Dolphins in 2015, but only played in nine games between those two seasons. That’s likely part of the reason why he’s flown under the radar, but fulfilling Rodgers’s expectations come the fall would likely ensure that’s not the case in the future.

  1. As a Dolphins fan. He’s an average run blocker and he’ll probably get your QB killed in Pass Protection

  2. This guy should help with rotation if nothing else. Can’t believe preseason starts in a couple weeks! This is the biggest Packer make-over in almost 15 years. Lots to be excited about if you’re a Packer fan.

  3. Billy Turner has already fit in well on-the-field, in the locker room and off-the-field. Most talk about Amos, Savage, the Smith Bros., and Gary on defense when they talk about the new guys. Those guys are all great additions as well, but Billy is not talked about enough and as Aaron said, Billy will be a big positive addition for this offense.

Bakhtiari says he hit it off right away with Billy: “Billy is fantastic. We jumped in right away on a frienship. Great addition to the line and this locker room.”

Some guys just chase the money, but I don’t blame all these free agents for wanting to chase a ring in Green Bay.

Going to a rebuilding team that hasn’t had a winning season in 3 years is chasing a ring? The delusion is real.

  5. Turner is going to make an immediate impact at RG for the Packers, it was a position of need going in to the offseason.
And with the addition of 2nd round draft pick, Elgton Jenkins, and wild card, Cole Madison, Green Bay’s O-Line depth is shaping up to be a positive on this team.
It’s obvious why Aaron Rodgers is all smiles as training camp approaches.

If they are signing Turner right now obviously oline is struggling. It’s obvious you have never seen him play either.

  7. Rodgers would like to raise a toast and drink to celebrate his new right guard but it would probably take him half of training camp to actually finish the glass of beer.

Green Bay targeted and signed Billy Turner in the opening days of free agency.

The Dolphins played Turner out of position as a LT.
They had to out of necessity as injuries took their toll, and i think it was clear that he wasn’t suited for the position.

In GB he’ll find a home at RG, and from all accounts, he’ll be a great fit for Matt LaFleur’s zone blocking scheme.
I have no illusions about his overall talent.
He was ranked 33 by Profootball Focus out of all NFL Guards.
    He’s very good, not elite.

Anyway, he’s got to be a sight better than the Justin McCray/Byron Bell experiment that GB employed last year.

  9. Bill Barnwell gave the Turner signing a D grade, but I’m sure he’ll be great. Good use of $28 million.

  10. Hope he helps. I have no idea what this Packers team will do this year; I’ve followed them for 50 years and this is the most uncertain team they’ve fielded since at least 2006.

  11. Its funny how many of you talk about how trash the Broncos offensive line has been yet when your team signs one of their O-line rejects, suddenly this O-lineman becomes elite. SMH

  12. This just in……Turner thankfully takes GB big money and will be below average. This is par for the course in cheeeser land.
