Will the Chiefs keep Tyreek Hill over the long haul?

Before off-field issues put the career of Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill in limbo, talks on a long-term deal had begun. Forgotten in the events of the past four months is the fact that those talks may have hit a snag, unrelated to the off-field issues.

Here’s what Jay Glazer wrote in a mailbag for TheAthletic.com, several weeks after he called the shot of the offseason by predicting that Odell Beckham could be traded: “[T]here were questions in Kansas City about whether they could re-sign Tyreek Hill. I heard some rumblings at the start of free agency that his name was being thrown about in trade talks, but at the time thought it had to do with his contract more than anything else.”

It’s possible that the Chiefs had caught wind of what may be in the pipeline from a legal standpoint and explored cutting and running, but it’s hard to imagine coach Andy Reid deliberately sandbagging another team about a situation that, at the time, could have jeopardized Hill’s 2019 season and possibly beyond. So it’s possible that Hill simply wants more than the Chiefs are able or willing to pay, given that they soon will be both breaking the bank and blowing open the vault for Patrick Mahomes.

Contract talks are expected to resume soon regarding Hill. If there’s an impasse, a trade becomes one of the options, either in before the 2019 deadline (less likely) or in early 2020 (more likely, if the Chiefs decide to take that path).

The wildcard in all of this is rookie receiver Mecole Hardman. It was assumed when the Chiefs traded up to get Hardman in round two that he had become the Tyreek Hill short-term contingency plan. What if Hardman was actually the long-term contingency plan?

If Hills seeks (and he arguably deserves) $20 million per year, the Chiefs have Hardman under contract for four years at a total payout of less than $5 million. And coach Andy Reid already has made it clear that he believes Hardman could have the same impact as Hill has had.

He’s got that same explosive power,” Reid said of Hardman in May, regarding comparisons to Hill and DeSean Jackson, whom Reid coached in Philadelphia (and also drafted in round two). “Now, DeSean was probably a little bit further along then Tyreek was at the position — [Hardman] is probably closer to where Tyreek was coming out as a wide receiver. DeSean was a phenomenal route runner coming out. You’ve seen the growth with Tyreek, and I think you’ll see it with this kid. But he catches well, he’s got great, secure, hands, and he can run like a son of a gun.”

If Hardman can deliver on that potential, it gives the Chiefs leverage in their talks with Hill, and choices in the event the Chiefs decide that it makes sense to do with Hill in 2020 the same thing they did with Ford in 2019: Apply the franchise tag, and then trade the player.

That approach would give the Chiefs a chance to evaluate Hardman for a full year in practices and games, with Hill possibly becoming the Alex Smith in this scenario — and Hardman becoming (if he can check all the boxes) the Mahomes.

  1. Dude will be in trouble again within a year or two, and current trouble may still grab his tail.

  2. When it comes to ‘winning’, doing anything or everything is on the table and morals or right and wrong on usually the first things off the table.

  3. The ONLY reason Tyreek Hill is free and clear is because they didn’t have proof. He’s now showing he hasn’t changed since college so its a risk assessment of whether or not they’ll have video, photos, or witnesses the next time there is an incident. And there WILL be an incident.

Do u want to not only fork out tens of millions in guaranteed money but cripple your salary cap for years for someone suspended or in jail? I’d let him walk.

  4. they soon will be both breaking the bank and blowing open the vault for Patrick Mahomes.

Based on one season…that wouldn’t be smart at all.

  5. I don’t get it. They cut bait with Kareem hunt, yet want to sign this guy long term? Trash organization, from the top down.

  6. Strange that mahomes is so good at playing quarterback that it will stop him from winning a super bowl because of the contract he will command.

  7. It’s just a matter of time until he does something again. If it walks like a bad person, talks, and commits domestic violence more than once, guess what, he’ll do it again.

  8. Congratulations to the NFL for butchering their decision to suspend Tyreek Hill..The Chiefs didn’t hesitate to welcome Hill back with open arms..What I suspect will happen is Crystal Espinal will have a “tell all” interview with some notable outlet, AFTER she gets full custody of these kids, or at least the newborn twins.

  9. Hill is a serial domestic violence abuser that will now feel emboldened by not being suspended. It is far more likely than not that he will assault Espinal, one or more of his kids, or all of them again than not. It is far more likely than not he will end up seriously injuring one or more of them. That’s how dv abusers operate. Unless they are jailed or so badly shocked that they snap out of the abusive cycle they will continue to commit abuse.

And when it happens again all we’ll hear from Goodell and KC is shocked exclamations that they could never have seen it coming.

  10. if he was expendable, they would have released him the second they heard about those child abuse accusations. But Hill can single handedly change the outcome of a game, so of course they’re going to keep him for years to come. its sad but thats the NFL.

  11. I’d try to trade him for the best player/draft picks offered. There will likely be takers and then your team can move on with the message sent to other teammates.

  12. Mostly all of the chiefs fans want a Superbowl and they do not care that Hill is an abuser. He is innocent they say. It’s just a coincidence. He will get his on “the yard”, a player will convict him.

  13. Another black eye on the NFL. I thought there were still a few class team ownership left but KC has shown they also are persuaded not what is correct action but care less about victums of NFL players

  14. Do it, but only with a “morality clause” in his contract. If he won’t sign one with it in it, he is not serious about reforming as he does not trust himself.

  15. well the best we can all hope for at this point is some karma on the level of what happened to junior galette. the chiefs welcoming this guy back shows him that he is the most important piece to them possibly winning something. wont happen when hes on their team.

Go ahead and pay the piece of trash. When he screws up again you can be stuck with the contract.

You do know the only gauranteed contract in the NFL belongs to Kirk Cousins right?

  17. What incentive does Hill have to stay out of trouble now? He must feel real confident in himself after this latest incident.

  18. Well..if Oakland is going to keep a guy like Incognito who’s threatening to kill the world I can see the Chiefs keep a guy who was only accused of a veiled threat in a domestic argument with his wife.
Didn’t threaten to shoot her or kill her or anything like that.
So yes I think he deserves a long term contract in KC.
You got guys like Incognito, Ruben, and Hunt, ect ect ect all playing ball.

It’s time for PFT to stop the persecution of Tyreek Hill and focus on guys like Incognito who threaten to kill people. Mass kill people.

What is your take on that PFT ?

  19. The Chiefs will keep Hill on a short leash for all of 2019 and see what happens before considering signing him to a big contract in 2020. He’s really a PR nightmare so I think after this season Hill is done in KC.

  20. Kelce welcoming back his team mate with open arms! Says a lot about the state of culture in KC! This will come back to bite them all; KC , the Commish, and the NFL name. A repeat Domestic Abuser who harms and threatens children and pregnant women gets a big welcome back because he is a gifted athlete. It has nothing to do with being a hater, this is just plain WRONG!

  21. Well, I certainly picked the wrong forum to comment on. This is the forum of illiterate idiots that don’t know anything about what they are talking about. Click bait lemmings. You don’t want to know the truth. An overly thorough police investigation didn’t find anything wrong. The NFL, an organization under the gun for “getting it wrong” also takes 4 months of its own investigation, and found NOTHING wrong. Maybe, just maybe, Tyreek is the victim. He has a GF and baby mama, all chummy with him because he’s about to make the big bucks in the NFL, but he realized what a POS she is and dumps her. Suddenly, he’s a child abuser? Gimme a break! Tyreek hasn’t hurt anyone in his life. Growing up, he was just a quite kid that wanted to plan football. Raised mostly by his grandmother. You don’t think he grew leaning respect for women? Nah, man. Tyreek is NOT that kind of person. He loves his kid more than anything. THAT’S the TRUTH. You would rather see someone hang than realize your morals just might be wrong.

Karma, it’s coming. What goes around comes around.
I’m not sure what’s more despicable Hill , or all the Kansas City fans defending him.

I know what’s worse, clickbait lemmings, believing the first thing they read, assuming the worst, and never once considering the true story. Even after it was proven by medical personnel and law enforcement, Hill didn’t lay a finger on his kid, people like you are still going to write your own narrative. Hill has been nothing but a model citizen until his whack GF came back in his life. It his highly probable that he didn’t do anything wrong in 2014 either. Throwing that women out of his apartment should’ve been the best thing he could do for his life, but she wouldn’t have it. Accused him of beating her up. Even the judge didn’t want to hear his side of the story. Taking a plea bargain was the only way to keep him out of jail. But he accepted the punishment he did get and worked his butt off to be a great human being and an exceptional father. The reason his teammates backed him and welcome him back is because they KNOW the real Tyreek and KNOW that Crystal’s family made the accusations. Both the DA and the NFL KNOW Tyreek didn’t do anything wrong. THAT’S why no punishment is coming down on him. I hope the opposite is true of his toxic ex-gf/baby mama and her whole gold-digging family.

And before you start accusing ME of supporting domestic abuse, you can KMA, first of all, but then try doing some research and you will find everything I said is true, if you spend half as much time finding the truth than flapping your sadistic ideas on other people.

He already admitted to assaulting his girlfriend when she was pregnant…. that defines his character

  24. If they keep him they will win the superbowl, but if they let him go in a PR move some team with zero morals will pick him up in a second. Everyone whined and cried about Hunt and they let him go. The Browns snatched him up and it’s funny how all these holy posters don’t seem to have an issue with this. Why? It seems like there are snowflakes who have hatred for certain individuals and certain teams. Hill gets paid to do the job of playing football not for being a nice person. When he loses a step he will be thrown into the NFL meat grinder and tossed out on to the street, so in effect the NFL uses him and he uses them until one or the other can’t keep up their end of the deal. It’s funny and convenient though…the NFL has to right their integrity issues from last year…hint hint wink wink. I got $50 bucks on the Chiefs to win the superbowl…bet on it. Or if anything goes south/injuries, the Saints will get payback for being screwed last year. It’s all a big game, look back to the Katrina convenience Superbowl win. Pat’s gotta rack up superbowl wins, but the NFL has to let other teams win every now and then to make it look like everything is on the up and up. Gotta love it.
