PFT’s pre-training camp (for most teams) power rankings

Getty Images

1. Patriots (final 2018 ranking No. 1): The Kings of the Hill remains perched there until someone can knock them off.

2. Chiefs (No. 4): The non-suspension of Tyreek Hill keeps the Chiefs in position to topple the Patriots.

3. Eagles (No. 5): If Carson Wentz stays healthy, it could be two Super Bowl wins in three years.

4. Cowboys (No. 7): Expectations are high, but too many players want/need to get paid.

5. Bears (No. 9): When not having a kicker in July is a team’s biggest problem, a team doesn’t have many problems.

6. Colts (No. 8): If Andrew Luck is going to satisfy Jim Irsay’s desire to win three or more Super Bowls, it’s time to get to work.

7. Rams (No. 3): If Todd Gurley‘s best days are behind him, the Rams will be regrouping, at best, in 2019.

8. Saints (No. 2): Between a pair of heart-shattering postseason losses and Father Time gaining ground on Drew Brees, the Saints could be moving in the wrong direction, at least temporarily.

9. Seahawks (No. 11): If 2018 was 2012 all over again, maybe 2019 will be 2013?

10. Steelers (No. 15): They’re pissed, they’re determined, they’re on the same page, and they’re potentially very dangerous.

11. Chargers (No. 6): Philip Rivers, citing the team’s many close games in 2018, has said the Chargers could have been 16-0 or 6-10. Getting to 12-4 again may not be easy, especially since they’ll take no one by surprise.

12. Vikings (No. 14): It’s possibly an up-or-out year for Kirk Cousins, with fewer excuses for subpar play.

13. Browns (No. 16): How will a team with sky-high expectations but limited achievement handle adversity? That question could get answered as soon as Week One vs. Tennessee.

14. Ravens (No. 10): It’s the Lamar Jackson show in Baltimore. What that actually means is one of the NFL’s best-kept secrets.

15. Packers (No. 21): “The audible thing” won’t be a thing for very long, because ultimately Aaron Rodgers will do what he wants to do, and the Packers won’t do anything about it.

16. Jaguars (No. 27): They’re starting at No. 16. They could be finishing much, much higher.

17. Texans (No. 12): At least I won’t have to worry about the G.M. calling to complain about a five-spot drop.

18. Panthers (No. 17): If Cam Newton can get and stay healthy, the Panthers can be dangerous, again.

19. Falcons (No. 18): With all three coordinators out and three new ones in (and the head coach serving as one of them), it makes sense to watch and wait.

20. Titans (No. 13): They can beat anyone. They can lose to anyone. Until they take care of the latter, they’re in danger of sliding to the basement of the AFC South.

21. Bills (No. 23): Josh Allen has more weapons, and he could be on track to becoming a star.

22. 49ers (No. 29): Year Three of the Shanahan-Lynch regime brings another chance to get the players they need to make the offense go. Keeping key players healthy is the biggest challenge.

23. Broncos (No. 24): Vic Fangio is going all in, and it could make the Broncos a surprise team in 2019.

24. Jets (No. 31): With the stink of the Maccagnan firing lifting, the Jets could be quietly laying the foundation for something unexpected.

25. Lions (No. 22): The Lions love that no one is taking them seriously.

26. Buccaneers (No. 30): Bruce Arians gives the Bucs a nice bump, but it still comes down to Jameis Winston.

27. Washington (No. 20): Yes, there’s talent. But there are still real issues with the folks running the show, and they’ll find a way at some point to keep the team from being as good as it can be.

28. Raiders (No. 26): Jon Gruden is trying to will this team to relevance, like Dr. Frankenstein trying to will a cadaver of mismatched parts to life.

29. Bengals (No. 28): Other than the pre-Mariota Titans, has there been a less interesting team in the last 30 years?

30. Dolphins (No. 19): They decry tanking talk, because they have to. The reality is that the Dolphins are tearing it down in the hopes of someday building it up.

31. Giants (No. 25): It’s becoming more and more clear that this team currently makes all major decisions with a dart and/or Ouija board.

32. Cardinals (No. 32): If it works, it’s going to be spectacular. For now, though, someone has to be at the bottom of the stack — and the Cardinals have earned it.

  1. I disagree that not having a kicker isn’t a big problem. It’s a huge problem for the Bears and any other team who doesn’t get consistency at that position.

  2. Pats number ONE as they should be .
Where they start is not a predictor of where they end but lucky number SEVEN sure has a nice sound to it .Does it not?
Here’s to a great NFL season -everybody

  3. “21. Bills (No. 23): Josh Allen has more weapons, and he could be on track to becoming a star.”

    Blake Bortles 2.0

  4. Normally I’d take this opportunity to make fun of the Vikings at 12. That was until I saw the Cowboys at 4.

    Really 4!?! LOL.

  5. Goodell once again proves what a jack*ss he is. Tyreek Hill is on tape threatening his girlfriend at the time. A clear violation of the conduct rule. No suspension. Why?”The non-suspension of Tyreek Hill keeps the Chiefs in position to topple the Patriots.” Yet the league had zero evidence to suspend Brady 4 games. I predict Hill does not make it through the season without some other similar incident occurring.

  6. To answer your question posed at 29 – Less interesting teams than the 2019 Bengals:
    The Pre-Mariota Titans.
    The Mariota Titans.
    The 2000-2017 Cleveland Browns.
    The Jets every year.
    The Post-Megatron Lions.
    The Redskins.

  7. Spend just one day of your life laying off the Bengals. Burfict and PacMan are gone. The roster has many high quality individuals active in the community. May not be interesting, but it’s important. Certainly preferable to the headlines made by many self-absorbed players.

  8. Keep prattling on with your Brees and “father time” nonsense. You’ve been barking out this foolishness with no evidence like a two-bit carny soothsayer for awhile now. Yes, eventually he will slow down but there have been no signs that it will be this year. Take Dat!

  9. Chief fans are very lucky Goodell hates the Pats, If Hill was a Patriot player he’d be banned for life. Though hopefully Karma comes back to bite Hill & KC in the butt, it always does.

Remind us….what is Andrew Luck’s record against the Patriots?

  11. So despite the Titans being able to beat anyone, and despite improving their roster and addressing their weaknesses, they are at #19 because they can lose to anyone? The Patriots can lose to anyone too, but that clearly doesn’t mean they’re a bad team. In fact, the Patriots were dominated by that #19 team.

  12. Pat’s fan are losing their minds, they were counting on Tyrek Hill being suspended. Now that he’s back with the team and they have no Gronk they know they won’t win in KC this year in January

  13. hey Nelly the Pats are not worried about ANYONE, especially a team that hasnt been in a Super Bowl since man first walked on the moon. Chiefs fans are cute

  14. The NFC north has 2 likely dominant defenses, 1 potentially dominant defense, and 1 likely very good defense if the FA signings pay off for the packers. The bears not having a kicker IS a big deal. Looks like the toughest division top to bottom to me.

  15. Chiefs fan: point a laser at a player – get fined $500 and banned for life.

Chiefs player: assault your girlfriend, promote a threatening environment for your family, and possibly abuse your child – get the red carpet treatment

  16. I’m amused by the people who love to hate on Josh Allen. I’m not sure why they feel the need. I guess we can all just laugh at them when he has a good year.

  17. Wow. I’m a Cowboys fan, and #4 is high. They need to prove they can beat teams like the Rams and Colts first. I’d put them around #5 to #8. The story of their season could hinge on the latitude and success of first-ever offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore. The guy has been an offensive guru his entire life. Will Garrett let him install his own offense? Or is he merely shuffling Garrett’s playbook? We shall see. I’m hoping for some new looks and creativity. This element of coaching could help propel them past the division round that has plagued them the past several years.

  18. I wonder about the psychology behind self-delusion, because it will be on full display this year at Arrowhead Stadium. Chiefs fans will have to delude themselves into disbelieving what they know to be true about Ol’ No. 10, the girlfriend/wife and child abuser. “Yay, Tyreek, you’re the greatest. Score those touchdowns.” What sort of mental contortions do you have to engage in to cheer for this slug? As for Chiefs management: The bosses have already soiled themselves by keeping this piece of human filth, who has gotten a pass for every criminal act he’s committed because he’s a star athlete. Every day Hill is with the club only deepens the stain.

  19. In any power ranking for NFL, I only pay attention to the top 12 spots because only 12 teams can get to the playoff. Who cares if number 32 should rank higher? Just give me top 12 teams and be done with it. Or give me top 6 NFC teams and top 6 AFC teams.

That’s so cute. KC fans get a whiff of success and in July they automatically pencil in hosting the defending champs in January. Meanwhile in NE we are on to…camp

  22. Carson Wentz had 10 good weeks and now he’s the greatest QB ever. The team was going to miss the playoffs last year and only really made it because he got hurt and it allowed Foles to come in and save the season.

  23. The Lions love that no one is taking them seriously.

    Yep.

Last time that happened they went 11-5. This defense looks eerily similar that that #2 ranked defense. Buckle up! New NFC North Champion this year

  24. Really

The saints add a really good te and have no real losses except center that they replaced with the best in the draft and drop like a rock?

Oh I forgot it must be mark Ingram why they dropped like a rock.

Yep did Ingram make the Ravens go up 7?

  25. you’re running cousins out of town now?? do you remember when you were posting articles daily about how he deserves 30 mill a year?? Pepperidge farms remembers….

    False.

I KNEW Goodell would cheat for you against the Pats. It’s what he does.

  27. why is father time catching bres and skipping brady?saints will have to be cheated to miss sb this season

  28. with only the 9th best and oldest qb in the league, losing so many coaches, a schedule against all the division champs again, a disgruntled personnel director, and all the dissension and decline we constantly hear about; how can the patriots possibly hope to compete against all the teams with great qbs like mahomes, rogers, etc.? Guess they’ll just have to rely on getting phenomenally lucky for the 19th consecutive year.

  29. Vikings are ranked way too low… Cousins is gonna be hoisting an MVP trophy in about 6 months

  30. So we just pretending the Bengals didnt have a winning record before injuries tore them up last year?

  31. So Aaron Rodgers is going to throw out the coaches play calls and use his own all game, that means the running game will be abandoned in short order in favor of the passing game.he knows of course that the running game keeps him upright and healthy and at his age thats pretty damn important.we will see less passes from him this season with much more productivity when he does pass the ball.

Recreational marijuana is now legal in Michigan.

  33. Aaron Rodgers please! Overrated. At some point you have to produce on the field not look good losing.

As for the Patriots where at Gillette Stadium can they find room for a 7th banner? Keep thinking 10 yard Tom is getting old. Your team needs more help than wishful thinking

Last time that happened? I have news for you: No one ever takes the Lions seriously. One playoff win since 1957 will kind of lull people to sleep. So it’s more accurate to say the last time no one took the Lions seriously, they finished 6-10.

Florio, your dislike of the Packers and Rodgers never goes away.

    ___________________

Are you for real? Florio has picked the packers to go to and win the superbowl every year for like the last decade.

  38. Seems like the Cowboys and Seahawks are a bit high.

And everyone should stop picking on the optimistic Lion fan, and instead congratulate the person for standing out there shouting in glee all by themself.

  39. the assessment of the vikings is spot on. As a fan of the team, I just don’t believe cousins can handle this weight on his shoulders. you can’t deny he’s a talented passer. but he cannot handle the pressure. unless the defense dominates like they did in 2017 and make it easy on him like they did on keenum, i can’t see cousins going down and winning a game they need to win to stay in it. if the team fails this year, fire spielman, trade the aging veterans and position yourself for Tua, fromm, or herbert this year (assuming they come out), or for Trevor Lawrence whenever he comes out. ideally, they wait for lawrence- that guy is going to be incredible.

So true, not laying everything at Boswell’s feet, but when he lost his mojo last year, it cost the Steelers big time. Again, not all his fault, there was plenty of blame to go around, but at the same time, he couldn’t seal the deal when he had the chance.

Making it to 3 straight SBs, 4 of last 5, winning 3 will do that.

But in all seriousness, Brady has been hearing the declining/Father Time thing for like 5 years so not sure what you’re listening to.

  43. Dallas at 4..Please!! This List would probably be more accurate if he just started with the Pats and then went in Alphabetical order.. SMH!!

  44. 2 and 3 are really funny! Good luck on that! Eagles only holding one public training camp session is to hide all the cheating that will happen to achieve that! And they don’t want the public to see it!

  45. um, you guys are making my point, Chiefs havent won anything since man first walked on the moon. you know, meaning in the past 50 years, smh

4-27 against winning teams. Let that sink in

  48. Even if Josh Allen proves to be nothing more than average starting QB, his personality will make him a star. Regardless, #21 is higher than they should be at the moment.

  49. As a Cowboys fan, they ARE too high at #4. Realistically I would put them at 9-12 at this point. The Eagles are WAY too high – they should be in that same range of 9-12. People sure are hopping onboard the Eagles bandwagon this year, but I’m confident it has a few broken spokes.

The Saints and especially the Falcons are too low. I would put both in the top 10. Vikings, Packers and Browns look about right just outside the top 12.

  50. I’m glad that a member of the media finds the Bengals boring in the offseason. It means there’s nothing to report on. No arrests, no controversy, no drama. I’ll take uninteresting over a media circus any day.

  52. I’m glad Florio keeps the Seahawks on his back burner or they would be ranked 18-20 and mentioned at 6-10 or 7-9 every year. Watch them take the NFC West at 11-5.

    ——————-
They had Hill last year too didn’t they? Played the Patriots twice last year too. Once home once visitor.

  54. Sorry just because you are the SB reigning champs (or the runner up, or anyone who went to the playoffs) doesn’t automatically say you have to be knocked off first. Patriots – players gone and Brady wasn’t exactly elite last year, Chiefs lose weapons…oh wait, unless they didn’t, people moving around. Sorry there just isn’t any thought into this one.

    More interesting…Mark Sanchez retired today.

  55. Amazing thing is, we do this every year. We look at the previous years play, how everything “figures” and it all make so much sense. But then they actually start to play and within 4 weeks, suddenly the previous year, and all of this logic, becomes irrelevant. And, some team NO ONE could possibly perceive as a realistic competitor suddenly is one of the major threats (last year it was the Bears.)

It seems only the Patriots are a truly reliable contender. But all the rest – no matter how illogical now – wont materialize until after a few games are played, and the only “sure” thing, is that almost none of this will be relevant.

  56. So Bills with #2 defence last year with 10/11 returning d starters, revamped o line, and revamped receiving core is #21. If Bills relocated to Dallas, they would be #1 in power rankings.

  57. Seahawks at 9 seems about right as they have the same team as last year with some additions and improvements. Playoffs last year with the number 1 running game. Year 1 for new OC last year so expect improvement.

Russell, Chris Carson and that improved line alone should keep them where they are around 8-9. They can just grind a game along, keeping it close, running the clock. Then you have RW at the end to try to win it. Same old recipe really just different ingredients.

What would vault them into the top 5 would be the young defense and the new young receivers coming alive.

The special teams unit seems to be a focus of improvement so far. #9 feels like a place where they can fly under the radar a bit this season and then go on a late season run IF things go well.
