Jerry Jones: You don’t need the rushing champ to win a Super Bowl

The Cowboys won three Super Bowls with Emmitt Smith as their top running back and Smith was the leading rusher in the NFL in each of those seasons.

One might assume that would work in Ezekiel Elliott‘s favor when it comes to hammering out a new deal with the team. Elliott has led the NFL in rushing two of the last three years and the team went to the postseason each year.

They didn’t win the Super Bowl, however, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones pointed out in an interview with CBS DFW that having the rushing champ isn’t a prerequisite for winning the big one.

“The point there is, you don’t have to have a rushing champion to win a Super Bowl . . . Emmitt was the first one to do it . . . . That’s one of the dilemmas at running back is that the league knows that you can win Super Bowls and not have the Emmitt Smith back there or not have Zeke back there,” Jones said. “You’ve gotta do all of the things along with having Zeke that allow you to have other players so that you can win the Super Bowl. That’s what we’re going through.”

The Cowboys have a couple of other players to pay right now and neither quarterback Dak Prescott nor wide receiver Amari Cooper has a team option on their contract for the 2020 season. That may wind up working against ending a holdout that’s not showing any signs of slowing down.

  1. I really hope Zeke signs somewhere else. Dallas is a plantation for professional athletes of color.

  2. you’r eright Jerrah, I dont need the rushing champ to win, but YOU sure as hell do

  3. Stay the course Jerry! He has 2 years left on his current contract. Let him stew.

RB by committee if need be.

I would extend Zak quite yet either. He’s an average QB, maybe a bit above.

Extend or resign Amari Coopeer first and foremost.

  4. Terrell Davis. 1998. It’s been 20 years since the league’s leading rusher won the Super Bowl. Jerry’s analytics department needs to update its software.

  5. It’s kinda funny they have a poor-mans version of Aikman, Smith and Irvin and won’t be able to pay all three of them. or win any championships with them.

  6. Running back is the least important position in the NFL. You can get 75% of Zeke’s production from a guy like CJ Anderson at 1/20th of the price.

  7. No Tony Dorsett or Emmit Smith were needed for America’s team either. Boy’s have a better chance with Zeke than without. Pay him Jerry.

  8. He has two years left on his rookie deal so Jerry has the upper hand here. Until the union can get the players a better deal these things are going to become the norm. I do not agree with holding out but with RB’s getting run into the ground it’s hard to not sympathize with Zeke. A good QB may get 2 or 3 big deals but a 1st round RB will probably only get 1. With the 5th year option most 1st rounders wont get another deal until they are on the wrong side of 30.

  9. Should be an entertaining pre-season with Jones continually placing his foot in his mouth

  10. You’ll find out soon with that fraud Daq as quarterback, zeke makes him look good…

  11. You need a good, aggressive coach. Not a toady.
You need an owner that stays out of the business.
You need players that are not greedy. Like TB.
The Cowboys stink and will continue to do so..

  12. That quote just completely devalued the RB position and Ezekiel Elliot himself as far as what he brings to the team.

  13. Proof that this man is senile:
    92 rushing leader
    93 rushing leader
    95 rushing leader
All won the Super Bowl. Some guy that played for him and ended up in the Hall of Fame…

  14. Short memory for Jerry, do you remember the rb’s before Zeke arrived with what was called the best offensive line ? Let me remind you, Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, and Alfred Morris. What did you win then ? Nothing, not even the playoffs. You might not necessarily need the rushing champ, but you sure do need a quality one like Zeke.

  15. NEWSFLASH Fake Phd, you won’t be winning any more Superbowls. That is all.

  16. Prescott, Cooper, and Elliott are about to find out just how valuable they are without a line

  17. The Cowboys have always had a run first philosophy. You control the game by running and use the pass when the defense isn’t expecting it. That has certainly been the Cowboys philosophy since Jerry let Jimmy walk. Jimmy also like the run to control the game, but mixed in the passes more than Garrett / Lineham did. Zeke is an exceptionable RB, but I agree with Jerry sort of. You don’t need a great RB, but you do need a great line, a good RB, and some capable receivers and a capable QB, which Dak is. Dak may never put up great numbers like Brady, Mahomes, and others but he is a capable leader at the QB position. Some fans are just enamored by individuals numbers. It’s not about individuals stats, it’s more about team play!

  18. Anything Jerry Jones knows about winning a Super Bowl involves Jimmy Johnson, and I don’t see Jimmy Johnson’s name in this article, so….

  19. Look at the facts. The Cowboys have @ $23 million under the cap (top 51) for 2019. That is not enough to sign Prescott, Cooper, Smith and Elliott. Prescott and Smith have rookie contracts ending this year so they desperately need to be resigned. Cooper will be content with his 2019 (fifth year) salary. Elliott has two more years under contract but wants to leapfrog Prescott, Smith and Cooper so the Cowboys are forced to deal with the petulant running back who has had numerous off field episodes. OK Dallas fans – Dak Prescott, Jaylan Smith and Armani Cooper or Ezekiel Elliott? Elliott has shown that he will probably incur another personal conduct suspension. Who in their right mind would sacrifice Prescott, Cooper or Smith for a head case like Elliott? Dallas fans need to look at the facts. Elliott is disposable; Prescott, Cooper and Smith are not.

  20. Someone said in the comments without a line ? Are you talking about the 3 pro bowl lineman . The best left tackle the best guard and by far the best center ? No line lol

  21. so he dosen’t need zeke but he does need the clapper on a lame duck contract??? your to funny Jerry lol

  22. A cowboy standoff. Zeke is clearly saying that he believes he should get his extension before Dak and Cooper (and half the defense). Quite the team player (not). Meanwhile JJ is watching the headlines in Cabo for Zeke’s next law enforcement story to catch fire. Get the popcorn.

  23. You dont need a HOF Qb either, but it helps.

The way the cowboys are constructed, mobile QB, road grading O-Line. You DO need a monster RB to make it work.

Cowboys dont go to playoffs without Zeke. You heard it hear 1st.

Absolutely incorrect. Travis Frederick and Tyron Smith are signed until 2023, and Zack Martin is signed through 2024. They have a 2nd year LG in Connor Williams that will most likely move to RT next year after Lael Collins walks in free agency (he played RT and LT really well I’m college). And they drafted what most NFL personnel has described as a plug and play guard in the 3rd round this year in Connor McGovern.

Games are won in the trenches. Look no further than Dallas’ playoff game last year against the Rams when they rolled against Dallas’ D-Line to the tune of 273 rushing yards AND shut down Zeke (53 rushing yards) with Donald and Suh. What did Dallas do? They drafted defensive tackle with their 2nd rounder (no first) and offensive line with their 3rd round pick.

  26. You hate to waste the best of line in football on a rinky dink running game. Teams are built around certain capabilities.

The Cowboys are built to run. So. A great back makes sense. That is not true for Patriots or Indy.

  27. idk if u need the rushing leader or not. jerry said u dont need a smith back there….but when he held out the cowpatties started off bad so they got smith back in there. that was with a future hofer named aikman under center and another a wr. now hes got yak under center….pay zeke.

  28. There are many different paths to the SB championship, and relatively few rushing champs have won the SB the same season they won the rushing title. Kareen Hunt is a good example. He was the rushing champion for KC but his team did not win the SB. Tom Brady never had a running champ in any of those 6 SB wins.

Is the Cowboys SB caliber? I don’t think Vegas has made them the favorites for this season. Their D is reasonably good but not dominating. Their coach is not considered SB caliber, and so is their QB. He is good but no one will mistake him as Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Patrick Mahomes or even Jared Goff or Big Ben. Even if they have Ziggy Elliott, they are not the favorites to win the Lombardi this season.

  29. …says an owner who has never won ANYTHING without a Hall of Fame running back, Hall of Fame recever, and Hall of Fame quarterback…and a coach who knows how to put it all together.

  30. The last time Jones built a Super Bowl roster there was no salary cap. Since it came in he’s had very limited success. 24 years of futility. So I would ask… How on earth would Jones know what the Cowboys need to win a Super Bowl?

If I were him, I would pay Dak, pay Zeke and see where that takes the franchise in the next 5 years. Otherwise it’s almost a rebuild.

I’m not sure all the RB holdouts are greedy players. Elite RBs do have a dilemma they are dealing with. The rookie wage scale is bad for RBs. Their best years are 1-5 and they can’t really get paid in that window, so they have to do something to get paid. For other positions it’s definitely different, but for RB they come into the league and make an impact right away while getting paid next to nothing.

I almost think RB rookie contracts need to be limited to 3 years, which wouldn’t be fair to other players, but that kind of makes sense for that position.

    —————–

I really don’t think that’s a true correlation. That’s just coincidence. There’s statistically a 3% chance the rushing leader would be on the Super Bowl champion. So once every 32 years on average. Makes sense that it last happened that long ago. It’s a rare occurrence.

However, having the leading rusher, or any good rusher would increase your odds of winning games. It is better to have the leading rusher than to not have them.

  34. Have Zeke is the only chance the Cowboys have. If a defense doesn’t have to worry about Zeke the safety’s can double receivers and Prescott look like a fool. You better get him Jerry.

  35. It would be more interesting to look at all the Super Bowl winners and then look at the team rushing yards. There is probably a minimum number of yards you need to get to have a legit chance to win the Super Bowl. Looking quickly at the Patriots 6 Super Bowls their lowest was 1607 yards in 2003 and they were as much 2134 in 2004 (and had 2037 last year). It doesn’t matter so much what the lead back gets, more that the team can rush for enough yards. It seems like if you get close to 2000 it’s enough. 1600 is pretty low. The Giants in 2011 were probably the worst rushing team to win a Super Bowl. 1427 yards on the season.

  36. PFCcensor has it right. No way you pay this bad news running back big bucks. He’s a suspension waiting to happen and a knee injury away from retiring.

  37. Don’t often agree with Jones but he’s right in this case. If you spend considerable resources to build a team around your running back then you are destined to lose. This is not the 60’s, 70’s or 80’s. It’s a whole different era now with free agency and salary caps which didn’t exist back in the Dorsett days or in the days of any great runner. I believe the salary caps and free agency started back around 1994. That good Cowboy team was eventual dismantled because of the imposed salary cap and they haven’t sniffed a Super Bowl since.

I don’t know how many Super Bowl winners there are in the salary cap/free agency era had the leading rusher in the league on their team but I would guess way more often than not that wasn’t the case. Elliot may be good, when he’s on the field, but he’s definitely not needed to win a Super Bowl. Not if you’re good at building other areas of your roster.

  38. Yeah Jer-ah, but having an intrusive, egomaniacal owner with some deterioration of brain function can be a liability.
What is Jimmy Johnson doing these days, anyway…?

  39. Nothing against the Cowboys, but Jerry’s been telling us for the last few years what you don’t need to win a Superbowl.

You know what, I think I believe him.

  40. Well Jerry, then let him go or trade him. If you really don’t need him then. It’s not that hard to figure out. You called out the fact you don’t need a rushing champ, but you want give him up.
