NFL to focus on eliminating the “lobster block”

Every NFL season brings about changes to the rules and adjustments to the ways existing rules will be enforced. In 2019, NFL officials will focus on getting rid of the so-called “lobster block.”

Referee Adrian Hill said, via Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com, that the technique involving the grabbing of a defender around the torso or shoulders to stop them from getting to the play from the backside will be targeted for strict enforcement.

“Certain teams do it, and [the league] is trying to basically legislate it out of the game,” Hill said Monday, at the Bears’ training camp.

According to Seifert, players will be shown a video containing examples of plays that weren’t penalized in the past but that will be penalized moving forward.

  1. Great. Just what the game needs – more penalties. Soon we’ll be watching NFL Penalties and in between penalties there will be somne football.

  2. .
and this causes more injuries than kickoff returns…
you know kick off returns which account for less than .01% of injuries but were deemed super dangerous with absolutely no stats showing it greater than .01%

  3. “Lobster Block”?! It’s called offensive “Holding”!

Never underestimate Goodell’s ability to confuse and confound something that’s pretty basic!

“Lobster Block Gate” is right around the corner!

    So holding?

  5. I hate the early season NFL games they are clearly not reffed the same as the rest of the season and the playoffs are even less like the regular season. There is holding on every play adding more holding penalties is just pure stupid.

  6. the whole line of scrimmage is out of control. todays olineman are too fat to safely run while the athleticism required out edges/defensive ends is unreasonable since Julius Peppers came around.
Allowing the Olineman to block outside of their shoulders (and basically hold every play) is what got the king size jumbos into the game and set this thing in motion.

  7. Publix put the “crab block” on Jameis by banning him from 47 local stores.

Inventing a name for it that refers to something in New England is just part of the setup.

  9. It doesn’t sound like this is going to prevent injury, just slow the game down even more.

  10. no accident they named it the “lobster” block. obviously the league is grasping for another rule change in a desparate attempt to stop new england. thank god we have dante scarneccia to stay a step ahead of league evil doers.
