Tom Brady suggests a poll question on whether he deserves a new deal

AP

Three days from turning 42, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is 16 regular-season games from becoming a free agent. Does he deserve a new deal that would extend his contract with the Patriots?

“Have I earned [an extension]?” Brady said to reporters, via Darren Hartwell of NBCSportsBoston.com. “I don’t know, that’s up for talk show debate,” Brady told reporters Wednesday at Patriots training camp. “What do you guys think? Should we take a poll? Talk to Mr. Kraft, come on.”

In 2019, Brady will earn $14 million in base salary; the question is whether the Patriots could give him a major boost, given the reality that Father Time eventually will win. His ever-advancing age could make the Patriots inclined to take Brady’s contract on a year-to-year basis. Brady was asked whether he’d welcome that approach.

“We’re all day to day if you think about it,” Brady said, putting a twist on an old SportsCenter bit. “None of us are really promised anything. So I’m trying to do the best I can today and just let those things work themselves out.”

There aren’t many options. Either Brady signs a new contract before March, gets tagged, or becomes a free agent. And while it’s inconceivable to envision Brady playing with another team, John Unitas, Joe Namath, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre didn’t finish where they started.

  1. Let him get some camp under his belt, maybe a pre-season game (or two) before deciding. NE doesn’t reward a player for past performance and they need some real-time data on soon to be 42 year old Brady.

  2. At this point with Mr. Kraft showing he is willing to Veto Belichick, there is zero chance Brady plays for another team.

  3. What is that word? Oh, I remember now, it is off the books! A QB with his record playing for 30 cents on the dollar. Yes, and I saw Elvis today.

$14M is a lot of money for a guy who cheated himself, his fans, and the game.

You are off, Goodell makes over 40 million, not 14.

  5. I’m a Dolphins fan and hate Tom Brady and the Patriots. That said, they’re doing business right. What does Brady care about what he gets paid for his football salary in the short-term? Preserve cap space, build a team around you, become an iconic sports figure. Good work if you can get it, regardless of pay.

The moment he retires he’ll get a sweetheart deal from Kraft to be an “Ambassador” or other nebulous title making multiple $M / yr. to show up at a few events and compensate him for the years he left money on the table. No salary cap on coaches / team employees, you can bet Brady will get his money, he’s just chosen to defer it to increase his brand.

  6. Brady didn’t seriously suggest a poll. He was being sarcastic about reporters asking him the question.

  7. I’d die laughing if he took the league veteran minimum so the team could spend more money on fielding a championship team.

  8. Brady is earning more than the reported $14M. Take a closer look at the money changing hands at TB12.

  9. Not a Pats fan but if any player ever deserves paid for past performances it is definitely Captain Cool. When he is done NE’S dominance will be over weather BB is in the house or not.

  10. Don’t ever mention Joe Namath with the like of Brady, Unitas, Manning, or Favre… He wouldn’t even be considered a Hall of Famer if he played anywhere besides NY.

  11. I wonder if Patriot fans are dreading the end of his career? Belichick has only truly been successful when Brady was his QB. Not taking anything away from his brilliance in fitting players into specific roles, but it will be interesting to see the arc of Belichick’s career when Brady is done.

  12. And while it’s inconceivable to envision Brady playing with another team, John Unitas, Joe Namath, Peyton Manning, and Brett Favre didn’t finish where they started.

    Nice list.
Ever hear of a guy named Joe Montana?

  13. Don’t ever mention Joe Namath with the like of Brady, Unitas, Manning, or Favre

unitas, farve, and manhole are way closer to namath than they are to the GOAT. brady has won more playoffs and rings than all 4 of them combied! then there was 28-3 too.o.

  14. League minimum to come back next year. As a result:

    Roger’s head explodes.
Jerruh has a non fatal heart attack due to a blood pressure spike.
    Tomlin quits.
    Mara sells his team.
The Jets fold. Not move. They just throw in the towel completely.

    Anyone object to the above?
