Odell Beckham: You want to work for QB like Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield woke up feeling dangerous before a win over the Falcons during his rookie season and Odell Beckham tweeted the same after being traded to the Browns this offseason, but Beckham used a different word on Friday to describe his partnership with the quarterback.

The wideout said, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, that he feels like “it’s going to be scary” for opposing defenses once this summer’s practices leave him and Mayfield on the same page.

Communication is part of that process and Mayfield stressed the importance of it after barking at the team’s receivers in a recent practice. Beckham joked that he hates being yelled at before saying it’s easy to want to do what Mayfield is asking.

“When you have a quarterback like Baker, you want to work for him,” Beckham said.

Some people in Beckham’s past stomping grounds might wonder if he didn’t want to work for his previous quarterback, but the words should play well in Cleveland.

  1. Let’s see what the diva is saying at his QB when OBJ goes 4 for 43 yards in Week 3. I can’t get trust this guy not to whine and complain

  2. It really shouldn’t matter who your QB is …. you’re being paid millions …. you should want to work for anyone under center. Let’s see what he’s saying in Week 6 when he goes for 4 and 43 yards

  3. Odell wants a QB that he can invite to his boat parties during the playoffs. Eli Manning is not that guy.

  4. Who does he think he’s fooling? We’ve seen his true colors before and something tells me that if the Brownies don’t live up to everyone’s ridiculous expectations for them, we’ll get to see them again.

  5. As a rookie last season, Mayfield had a better year than Eli – and he will this year, too.

  6. Enough with all the hype. WR’s are such mouthpieces and divas that they’re pretty hard to take seriously. As for ‘Baker’…….well, the proof will be in the production not the BS.

  7. I know that taking stuff out of context makes it easier to slam people and just shoot your mouth off, but take a look at what he said. “Baker yells at his receivers. I don’t like getting yelled at. But, I’m willing to look past that because I like and respect Mayfield, so I’m willing to work with him.”
OBJ has NEVER been criticized for his work ethic. He’s always been a hard worker because he wants to get better. To somehow slam him for not working for another QB is stupid. He’s just saying it’s different, but he likes working with Mayfield.

  8. It’s pretty simple… Either they will win games or they won’t. Looking good isn’t going to matter in Cleveland. They have to make the playoffs or the season is a failure. If Baker is the real deal the rest of the roster is good enough to make the playoffs and win playoff games, particularly when Hunt comes back. We will see soon enough.

  9. In less then a year the browns have gone from lovable losers to hated contenders. It’s funny how the discussions have changed. I hated the former, but I love the latter. Keep putting the browns down, it makes me laugh.

  10. After Tom Brady retires, he should teach players how to talk (while not talking to) the media.

Then the slimy media would be out of business when it comes to reaching for, propping up and home-brewing their attempts at provocative, incendiary comments from who amount to very young men, with very little, if any, professional development or polish, outside of being superb athletes.

  11. Gilmore will lock down Odell when the Browns play the Patriots. How will Odell react then? I expect he will throw a temper tantrum.

  12. this dude is going to be the first person ever to the IR with a hurt jaw from running his mouth so much.

  13. This guy is just so pathetic and immature… It must be awful for his level-headed teammates to have to play along side of this ridiculous clown. It’s really hard to understand why he’s put up on a pedestal, he commands zero respect

He didn’t want to work for a 2X SB champion? What has Baker proven up to this point? Potential? Attitude? Meh…

What has Baker proven up to this point? Well if you remember he did take over a team that was 1-31 the previous two seasons, now I know it’s not a whole lot but he is 7-7-0 as a starter and that is one hell of an improvement over 0-16 or 1-15 and that was in year one as a rookie, I think the kid’s “GOT IT” and he’s the best QB to come out since Luck hands down! And YES that includes Wentz who tore it up for the first 4 weeks in his rookie season but then went flat.

And let’s not forget what Mayfield has already accomplished, a walk on that no one wanted that turned into a starter on one of the nations top teams and a Heisman trophy winner to boot. But keep beating him down, he loves it and uses it as ammunition!

BTW where the “he’s too short to be an NFL QB”? Those people already realize what fools they were and they’re keeping their mouths shut this year!

  15. OBJ doesn’t respect contracts or money or anything really. He’ll turn his back on Mayfield just like Manning. The reason won’t matter.

  16. I love reading comments from Browns fans. After years of mediocrity, they think the team is going to the Super Bowl. The team had a losing record last year (yes 7-8-1) is a losing record, yet the comments make it sound like they’re the patriots. Its so cute……..

  17. .
    Baker Mayfield
    CMP% YDS TD INT Rating
    63.8 3,725 27 14 93.7
    Eli Manning
    66.0 4,299 21 11 92.4

so mayfields completion percentage, interceptions and yardage made for a better year than Eli…. CHECK… good thing Eli is declining cuz that states were better than 2017 2016…

  18. You should wanna work period, not because the environment fits your personality. Kid still needs to grow up.

  19. Who was the last diva WR holding the Super Bowl trophy? NFL teams don`t win with guys like Beckham. Great talent but chemistry matters and by the end of preseason a quarter of his teammates will be sick of hearing him and being asked about his comments.

  20. Just wait until Mayfield gets in his face about a lazy route or taking plays off.
OBJ will be making sarcastic remarks just like the “When you have a quarterback like Baker, you want to work for him,” jab at Eli Manning.

Ok, I get it, you’re a fan. It’s not like he came on to a team devoid of talent. They’ve had a Top 3 pick in the last 15 or so drafts. I like Mayfield and the Browns look like they finally some competent people running the team but let’s not label him elite just yet. Better than any QB since Luck? No! Jared Goff, Russell Wilson, Nick Foles, Kurt Cousins, Cam Newton are all better at this point. He still has to prove he’s better than Darnold, Allen and Jackson. Expect Darnold and Allen to take the next step since both their teams have improved big time.

  22. No doubt OBJ jumped ship in NY at the perfect time. The Browns are on the upside of their rebuild if, and a BIG IF, they can play together nicely and not let a me 1st attitude get into the chemistry its not a bad landing spot for OBJ. A nice offensive side of the ball and build that defense.
