Tom Brady turns 42, with no signs of slowing down

Getty Images

Somewhere, that courtroom sketch of Tom Brady resides in an attic, growing craggier and nastier and wrinklier every day.

Tom Brady the human turns 42 today, and he continues to exhibit all the traits of a man who could play quarterback in the NFL as long as he wants to play quarterback in the NFL.

This time it feels a little different, however. In the 2018 #HappyBirthdayTommy post, it was noted that some think he’s one more Super Bowl win away from retiring, or that he’d pack it in after two more seasons. The former was clearly erroneous; the latter still has a chance of happening, especially if Brady finagles Lombardi Trophy No. 7.

Regardless, he’s moving closer and closer to his expiration date (as we all are). At some point between 42 and 50, Brady presumably won’t be able to keep doing it at the level he’s been doing it. At some point, he’ll end what has become a two-decade chapter of his life and do something else. At some point, the Patriots’ constant fear that the end for Brady will come quickly and they won’t be prepared to continue to thrive without him may result in the Patriots making those preparations in a very clear and concrete way, forcing him to retire or to continue his career elsewhere.

Whenever and however the end for Brady plays out, astute observers advise watching his legs not his arm. Although never much of a straight-line runner, Brady has the ability to move away from pressure quickly and adroitly, stepping and sliding and effortlessly gliding as needed to avoid taking a big hit, all the while keeping his eyes in the direction of his receivers. In plenty of cases, his ability to recognize who will be open before the play is even snapped allows him to get rid of the ball before he even has to worry about stepping, sliding, and/or effortlessly gliding.

Still, that can’t and won’t continue forever. Some joke that the sixth-round pick turned all-time great superstar did a Damn Yankees-style deal with the devil; even if he did, the front end of the transaction can’t last as long as the back end.

Even if it nevertheless feels that way.

  1. That’s impressive but considering qbs today have strike zones, benefit from ridiculous penalities such as hands to the helmet really shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Qbs used to be able to get hit well after the play and have to deal with dbs mugging receivers downfiled until the ball is in the air. With that being said, is this the year Brady will actually get flagged for intentional grounding?

  2. I submit that he is actually Benjamin Button, will play 3 more years in the pros and then try be a 3rd string QB at the University of Michigan. Discuss.

  3. Like a fine wine, just getting better with age. Did you see him run the 40 in 0.63722 seconds?

  4. The salty mountain of hate does not approve of this message. He’s been too old for the last 5 years, 4 Super Bowl appearances & 3 titles and prob won’t last more than another 2 or 3 SBs.

  5. Happy Birthday Tom……man it must be nice to be you!!!
Best of luck this year & look forward to seeing you play your final season at 45 culminating in either your 8th or 9th Lombardi w/ New England…..

  6. Appreciate what your seeing this will never happen again. If you hate the Patriots that’s fine I hate the Packers I’m a Bears fan.If you hate Brady that’s fine I hate Rodgers again I’m a Bears fan but if you love the Game of Football you have to appreciate seeing Greatness This will never happen again. The Patriots are the last Dynasty team and Brady accomplishments will never be repeated. He has another 2 or 3 years left and very possible another Superbowl win that’s crazy so sit back and enjoy.

  7. As a Ravens fan who has seen us have some great games vs the Patriots it can’t be denied that Brady and Belichek have been an historic duo that will probably never be equaled in the NFL.

  8. Brady has a long way to go until he is considered to be a below average quarterback. If the Pats can maintain a strong team around him, then he can play at least until age 45 and maybe longer. Happy Birthday Tom.

  9. 2 year old Tom Brady started his 1500th game today. Meanwhile in Buffalo there was new coaching change, the 17th one in the last 15 years.

  10. Children love him, women adore him, men want to be him. Tom Brady should have been born triplets. He’s just too d*mn good to be one man. Happy Birthday Tom F. Brady…

  11. I am convinced this guy is going to play until he has a long grey beard and a cane.

  12. Brady did decline last year. Choose to overlook it all you want, but there was a decline. It wasn’t significant, but he looked ineffective in several games last year, especially over the first 6 weeks or so of the season. He also wasn’t that great in the playoffs.

  13. I just stopped by for the tears, so far they are a bit underwhelming.

Someone needs to get a hobby…..or grow up.

Brady has the best designer drugs money can buy,,,,,Edelman didn’t.

  14. I wonder if it ever occurs to Pats fans to not be so predictable on these boards. I mean, don’t the same responses get a little boring after 1000 repetitions? Just mailing it in at this point.

Bills are coming, and the AFCE is changing. The Pats days on top are coming to a close.

  15. With that being said, is this the year Brady will actually get flagged for intentional grounding?

Umm did you see the first drive of Super Bowl 42? You know where he got called for a safety because of it???

Starting off rocky in the first half isn’t anything new for The Patriots. And what playoff game was he bad in I forget? Was it the one where he threw for 345 yds and a TD and was up 28-0 before you could even blink an eye against the Chargers or the one at Arrowhead against the #1 team where he led countless clutch drives on the road with lasers in his eyes?

*That ended in a SuperBowl win.

  18. He wasn’t bad but he wasn’t particularly good either. Not much better than Peyton when he won a Super Bowl in 2016. Any quarterback can win a game when Belichick’s defense limits one of the highest scoring teams in history to 3 points.

As a Bills fan, I’ve watched Brady look like a cyborg for many years. Last year, he looked human.

Stoked for the upcoming season. It won’t be the “just add water” thing Pats fans are used to.

Ok got it, so it was the SB that he wasn’t dominant in which totally proved the original point by the poster that he wasn’t THAT great last year, totally understand now 🙄

  22. Why do people keep saying “you can’t cheat father time” when Tom Brady has already defeated father time?

The only question is how much of a beating will Brady give father time before he walks away?

  23. Funny thing is, He is in such great shape and so smart about not taking big hits and gets rid of the ball so fast he really could play 4 or 5 more years if he wants. Just a matter of life decisions. We will never see a QB like this again…..Never!

  24. Bills are always the offseason chanps. Their QB stinks. Jets are the 2nd best team in the AFCE and still are no threat to the Pats. Talk about denial.

Ya the Pats play in the tough division ……or at least that’s what you fanboys always whine……amusing.

  26. I guess you’re not allowed to criticize Brady on PFT so I’ll just point out that no athlete in any sport has performed at a high level after 35 that wasn’t later found to be juicing.

    —————————————

He literally had no one to throw to. Manning had 3 first rounders on offense alone. Those 2012-2013 “Kimbrell Thompkins/Aaron Donald” years were similar statistically, and he had his worst completion percentage of his career. Bill put together an awful offensive roster last year- probably this year also.

No one would say the defense carried him against the Chargers and Chiefs. Brady’s game has been complimentary football since 2014- use offense to control time of possession, not merely to score points.

Pretty sure it was Brady who was throwing the ball to the SB MVP wasn’t it? Wasn’t the MVP a receiver? Hmm. Pats left 10 points off the boards because of Ghostkowski’s miss, and Michel’s failure to pick up a easy 4th and 1. 23 to 3 would put the game in a different light wouldn’t it- these narratives can be bent anyway one chooses.

And if declining means being able to throw a 35 yards in the air touch pass between three defenders to win a SB I’ll take it.

2nd and 1, still eats at 12’s like an acid
I was unaware Johnny U, Staubach, Tarkenton, Moon, Elway, Warner and Young, just to name a handful QB’s who had great seasons after 35 off the top of my head, were ever found to be juicing. Although it isn’t surprising a Shehawks fan expects that everyone is juicing lol.

    Wrong

    Plenty of NHL players have.

    Just another JEALOUS crybaby

  31. I swear – only Pats fans ever make the “if we had played perfectly we would have scored more points” argument.

Brady led one TD drive in the SB. And I saw signs of decline throughout the season.

He’s not a myth. Dude is 42 now and that will show on the field.

Better to choose to overlook who Brady had to throw to during those early games and if anyone may not have been 100% during the playoffs and then retired soon after.

Too bad you missed the AFC playoffs against the Chargers and Chiefs. The OT in KC was vintage will to win Brady, converting three straight 3rd and 10s to end the vaunted Chiefs season in their own house. As Belichick says “Stats are for losers, the final scoreboard is for winners.” So you keep whistling past the graveyard. Just remember as you do, it’s not Brady and his .909 win % against your Bills that’s in there but the hopes and dreams of the Bills teams he has dispatched at a record clip

  35. As for Brady’s contract, I think he is planning on playing with the Franchise Tag the last two seasons. That way he gets good money, but doesn’t tie the future of the team’s salary cap up in a longer contract in case he falls off Max Kellerman’s Cliff. It’s a handshake deal with Kraft that Brady plays as long as he wants, and he promises to never play for another team.

Go back and watch Peyton try to throw the ball. It took every ounce of energy and timing to throw a 20 yard completion. His arm was shot.

Brady looked at least 1000 times better then that.

BTW… the Rams D played well too. They did have the best player in the NFL apparently.
