Carson Wentz: Preseason is “definitely never needed”

AP

The Eagles haven’t decided (or just haven’t told us) whether Carson Wentz is going to play in the preseason opener Thursday.

Wentz, for his part, doesn’t seem to care.

The Eagles quarterback gave the most tepid endorsement possible of the possibility of playing Thursday, which coach Doug Pederson hasn’t said he’d do or not.

“Preseason’s helpful, but I don’t think it’s a necessity,” Wentz said, via Reuben Frank of NBCSportsPhiladelphia.com. “No matter how much I’m out there I’ll be confident in Week One. . . .

“I think a little bit is helpful. But it’s definitely never needed.”

That’s probably a universal sentiment, though you’d understand why the Eagles might want to get him some time during an exhibition game, if not Thursday’s against the Titans.

Wentz didn’t play at all during last year’s preseason while rehabbing his knee, and while he missed the end of last season with his back injury, there’s no apparent problem there.

“It’s his decision,” Wentz said of Pederson. “I’ll be ready either way. Whenever it is we get out there I’ll be ready and I’m excited for it.”

Excited. Or something.

  1. Training camp is not needed? Players just show up the week before the first regular season game and they play? May be practice before any regular game is not needed either. Just go home after a game and show up at the stadium for the next game.

  2. I disagree that preseason is not needed. I understand vets don’t like it, especially entrenched starters but it is needed , unless you go to an 18 game season. The first two games would be garbage but you need game film to sort out your roster.

Pretty much everyone benefits from preseason. The refs, the coaches, and the players. Simulating game situations in practice only goes so far and if you aren’t a high draft pick this is how you make the team.

It isn’t pretty and i don’t think they should charge full price for the games but at least 2 games are needed.

  3. Of course he doesn’t want more games ..he can’t even make it through a 16 game regular season as it is.

  4. The players on the roster bubble and the undrafted rookies and journeymen need it to showcaae thier skills to make the 53 you genius. You would understand if you were a 7th round pick and not made of glass

  5. The Wentz always being injured thing is so overblown. It’s been 2 years. A fluky play where he tears and ACL, and last year he could have played through it.

    Give it a rest…

  6. He didn’t say TC is not needed. He said the preseason is not needed.

You have to remember, Wentz got hurt in his first ever preseason game, didn’t play a single preseason snap after that, and then started on Day 1 and lit it up in his first ever regular season game.

That’s the experience he’s drawing from to make these comments.

  7. The first 2-4 regular season games typically look sloppy and disorganized as is. Have a hard time believing that’d be any better if you nixed preseason games.

  8. @Justin Morris

Totally agree. Eagles had almost no chance of making the playoffs last season when they shut Wentz down.

Comeback player of the year AND MVP for #11

He also believes the last few games of the regular
    season are not necessary either.

I don’t usually comment, and I’m a die-hard Eagles fan, but this is hilarious. Well done.

  10. Oh okay then sparky we will just get rid of preseason and have all games count then and use backups in the second half eh? After all health is key. Hows that for a deal?

Exactly. They were like 4-5 when he was held out. The chances of making the playoffs were low. They did it as a precaution and then Nick was rolling. The ACL was a bizarre hit. Just a bad angle. If he gets injured this year again then I’ll start to worry.

  12. Everyone is scared of preseason because of injuries, but that is just part of the game. It sucks but you have to deal with it.

You don’t get better at something by not doing it.

I don’t even agree with the pathetic amount of practice these players get over the summer.

Most of these kids are going through tougher training camps in college and there’s a reason for that.

Once again, you do not get better at something by not doing it.

  13. Preseason is needed to audition guys for the final 53. Preseason is NOT needed to see about Carson Wentz- we have already seen him play at a scorching MVP caliber level. Well, some of us have seen it. It seems like alot of us didn;t see that lol. but it happened. And it’s coming. Get your popcorn ready, hayyyyterz.

Kids these days. Always wanting to put the cart before the carriage.

Haha, the cart IS the carriage, Dr. Wordsmith.
