Andy Reid: Patrick Mahomes will play the first quarter on Saturday night

The reigning NFL Most Valuable Player will get a quarter’s worth of playing time in the preseason opener.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said today that quarterback Patrick Mahomes will play the first quarter in Saturday night’s opener against the Bengals.

That’s on the high end of the playing time that star quarterbacks typically get. Many NFL teams are calculating that the risk of injury outweighs the reward of getting rid of offseason rust. But the Chiefs want to see Mahomes take some live snaps.

Backup Chad Henne will play the second quarter, Chase Litton will play the third quarter and Kyle Shurmur will play the fourth quarter.

  1. There is a ton of competition at the WR position, probably taking every opportunity to try and see who raises to the top. Same can be said for the back up TE and RB positions.

  2. I would think that with a player who’s talent level is so vastly different then his backup, they need to see position players play with Mahomes and not just Henne. Following training camp he’s building good chemistry with just about all of them.

  3. Sure some idiots will say you can get hurt in practice…yeah not in the nfl. They play at like 40% effort. Completly moronic to play him againest a bunch of srubs in rambo mode trying to make a roster.

Wonder how The Bears feel, drafting Tribisky, when they could have had Mahomes.

Sad. They feel sad. But that’s life as a Bears fan. Trubisky = Bortles, per PFF. Look it up

  7. Mahomes would be irrelevant, and maybe not even a starter, if he played for another team with another coach. He was drafted into a perfect situation – a great offensive coach and a great offensive roster.

  8. Mahomes is great, and I wouldn’t have him anywhere near the field in a meaningless preseason game.

  9. Well, that’s one way to make preseason football more palatable. Mahomes is must-see TV!

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard today and I listened to a montage of dumb Skip Bayless quotes today.

  11. Why in the world would anyone play a valuable commodity like Mahomes in a meaningless exhibiton game? If he gets hurt, there goes your season. It’s nuts.

  12. The World Champion Patriots, winners of more Super Bowls than any team in the last 4 decades exposed this kid and his offense last January. 0 points at halftime at home in a conference championship game says it all.

Fun to watch for sure but big time regression coming imo.

  13. Maybe that guy should ask what happened to Brady in the 2nd half that they couldn’t beat a worn out crappie defense in regulation….

UH… MVP put up 31 points in the second half against Hoodie and he couldnt do a thing to stop it. If Dee Ford wasnt offsides which had NOTHING to do with the interception the great Brady threw, Mahomes would be sporting his first Ring

Needing an offsides penalty to go to OT against a first year starter says it all.
