Nate Sudfeld to undergo surgery on fractured wrist

Eagles backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld has a fractured left wrist, Doug Pederson told reporters after the game.

Sudfeld will undergo surgery Friday morning, but Pederson said the injury was not season-ending.

Pederson said the Eagles would not bring in a quarterback right away, giving Cody Kessler a chance to win the backup job to Carson Wentz.

Clayton Thorson also is on the roster at the position.

“I can come out of retirement,” Pederson joked, via Les Bowen of philly.com.

Wentz did not play Thursday night. Sudfeld went 10-for-18 for 177 yards and one touchdown before his injury. His touchdown pass was a 75-yarder to Marken Michel.

Kessler was 3-of-6 for 12 yards, and Thorson 2-of-9 for 7 yards and an interception.

Sudfeld was injured on a late hit with 15 seconds left in the first half. He braced himself with both wrists as he fell backward onto the turf. Isaiah Mack was penalized 15 yards for roughing the passer.

  1. Looks like the Pats got a trade partner for Hoyer….
My guess is they can get him for a 3rd….

  2. Not that Sudfeld inspired any confidence, but Eagles better hope to God that Wentz actually stays healthy because things are grim if Kessler or Thorson have to take over.

  3. Philly, that Nick Foles trade is gonna come back to haunt you. Wentz can’t stay healthy, as he’s proven repeatedly, and now his backup is down. Cody Kessler is not exactly an inspirational replacement. I’d be very concerned if I were an Eagles fan.

  4. Sucks. The kid was playing great and got knocked hard on a late hit. I won’t call it a cheap shot because the guy is just trying to win a job, but still.

  5. sounds like this is mostly sudfeld’s fault for the way he braced himself for the fall. unlucky injury.

There is still a month before the season starts and this gives Thorson a chance to show the fans why the Eagles picked him.

  6. Maybe this will finally give Carson Wentz the urge to play football instead of rolling around in bubble wrap on the sidelines !

Let it go. Have you noticed how many acquisitions the team was made without having to pay Foles his $25MM?

  8. There’s not much out there right now in the way of free agent QBs. Sanchez? Osweiler? Or wait until another team dumps a QB at the end of preseason. Either way, not a good situation to be in after your first preseason game.

    — Said everyone in the world about Nick Foles two years ago.

A third for a back-up qb? What a laugh! There are still available free agent qbs that are every bit as good as Nate Sudfeld.

That’s my point….any one that’s any good will need to be traded for

  12. “I can come out of retirement Pederson joked” … yea because it’s always funny to crack jokes when talking about a player suffering a fractured wrist and having to undergo surgery. I wonder if Pederson is cooking up more comedy for when Wentz goes down again.

    Hilarious

  14. Hoyer may be worth a 7th maybe a conditional 6th but NO TEAM ANYWHERE is giving up a 3rd for him!

We’ll be fine. Carson is playing all 16 games + the playoffs this season.

    It wasn’t a trade.

  16. First the break is to his non-throwing arm and he is getting surgery on it today. There is still a month before games start to count and that is a long time for a bone to heal. Granted he won’t be ready to return in a month, if it isn’t severe then 6 – 8 weeks plus a substantial playing splint is likely. If it is in the shorter time frame then that is 2 games into the season, if the longer than it likely no more than 4 games into the regular season.

Second, most teams at this point in the season have 4 or even 5 QBs on their 90 man roster, some are veterans who are capable back ups but will be cut as teams look to save money and go with a younger developmental QB. That means there are yet to be known QBs that will be available beyond what is out there right now and are getting camp reps, so the Eagles will most likely pluck one out of those players once cut downs are mandatory . . . rather than bringing Mark Sanchez out of retirement (unbelievably he is only 32). Some veteran battles taking place in camps right now are Colt McCoy versus Case Keenan; it is unlikely that both these veterans will stay on the roster especially if Haskins wins the starting role (which it looks like he might). Another is Seattle where Russel is clearly the non-contested starter, but Paxton Lynch and Geno Smith are locked in a battle for the backup QB spot, one will most likely be cut. None of these names scream QB1 but all four are very capable QB2 players.

Finally, the truth is that having Foles back up Wentz is a very unusual situation. There are very few, if any teams that are playoff contenders that can bring in a backup and not really lose a lot from their offense. That scenario was never sustainable as Foles was to good to remain a backup, and oh by the way he left via free agency and not a trade. The truth is that the Eagles 2019/20 season all hinges on Wentz staying healthy and playing the full season plus the playoffs. Whether Sudfeld is injured or not, it isn’t likely that the Eagles seriously compete for a second Superbowl without Wentz, just like every other NFL team!

  17. If Kaepernick doesn’t at least get a try out, it’s even more obvious he has been unofficially banned from the league. The Eagles are contenders so if they decide to take some stiff off of the street without even giving Kaepernick a chance, it shows this is nothing but politics! Come on Jeff Laurie – Do the right thing and at least give the guy a shot. If he stinks, cut him like you did with Tim Tebow but give him a chance.

  18. Why are people wanting to trade for a stiff like Hoyer when Kaepernick can be given a try out for free? The Eagles can’t afford to have a sub par back up if they want to contend which means they need to look at ALL options. If Kaepernick doesn’t get a try out (when Mike Vick got an eventual starting job after jail time for horrible crimes against animals), it is 100% political.

    Yeah, ok.

  20. It was the second of two late hits on consecutive plays to go along with a cheap block in the back by Lewan that injured another Eagle player.

And you wonder why the Eagles hardly played any starters.

  21. @RickSanchez

Why would you give a chance to Kaep, a guy who hasn’t played football in years and was in decline before he was ever “banned” from the league? Why would you, as a business owner, take on a questionable football value at the cost of alienating half your fans?

  22. Just a reminder, the next time Foles plays 16 games in a season will be the first time.

  23. @backscrambling

Just a reminder, the next time Wentz plays a playoff game will be the first time.

    Foles won the damn championship.

  24. Eagles don’t get there without Wentz. I love Foles, but it was really an easy choice who to keep.

  25. @backscrambling

Uh, lots of teams make the playoffs every year. Only one climbs the mountain and wins it. Foles took care of the hardest part. What does 11 regular season games mean? Because that’s all Wentz contributed. Next season, he was on his way to a losing record, not beating a single winning team. Foles comes in and downs multiple division winners (and Super Bowl NFC Rep Rams) to get them into the playoffs.

Sure. “Easy choice” if all you can see is “oh big strong Wentz” and “beanpole Foles”. That’s all a shallow football fan ever sees. The right choice is the guy who delivers. And Foles delivered something Wentz has not.
