Report: Antonio Brown files grievance against NFL about helmet

Things are rarely dull around Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown and that goes from head to toes right now.

Brown has been away from the team for more than a week amid multiple reports of foot problems stemming from cryotherapy, but he’s reportedly due back soon. Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal also reported that the team believes the condition of Brown’s feet is a “non-issue.”

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that league rules governing which helmets players can use is a problem. The NFL and NFLPA have banned 11 helmet models because of how poorly they performed in testing. There was a one-year grace period in 2018 allowing players to continue wearing those models, but they are not allowed to wear them this year.

Brown wore one of those models while with the Steelers and Schefter reports he has filed a grievance with the league in order to be allowed to keep wearing it. Schefter reports that some believe the helmet issue has been a bigger problem for Brown than anything to do with his feet.

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady switched from an approved model back to a now prohibited one during the 2018 season. There were 32 players in all wearing the banned models last year.

Per the report, Brown is expected to have a hearing next week on the matter.

UPDATE 4:28 p.m. ET: A league source clarified to PFT that Brown’s preferred helmet is not one of the 11 banned helmets that were allowed to be used through last season. Brown’s helmet is not allowed to be worn because it is not certified by the National Operating Committee for Standards and Athletic Equipment. The helmet is too old to receive that certification and the league prohibits the use of helmets without that certification.

  1. Does this guy ever stop complaining? No wonder the Steelers didn’t want him anymore.

  2. so he wants to use a less safe helmet.
years later he sues the nfl for results from head and neck injuries.
this guy is just a jerk and completely untrustworthy.

  3. Return of the diva. That didn’t take long. So glad my team didn’t waste the time / money to sign this guy.

  4. As long as he signs a waiver absolving the NFL from any concussion litigation, let him wear whatever he wants.

    It’s his brain.

  5. The league “Grandfathered” the use of a helmet without a facemask when they made the facemask mandatory. Perhaps they should do the same with helmets that players already use and love.

  6. It’s a good thing Gruden was smart enough to sign him to a 3 year, 50 million dollar deal. That’s 150 million from the Raiders for the Gruden-AB circus. Antonio Brown makes Terrell Owens look like a stable genius.

  7. This is interesting, I wonder how this will play out.

    1. If I am the NFLPA – I am going crazy right now trying to figure out how to shut him up. Former players are working with a settlement regarding player safety most specifically about helmets, and this guy is filing a grievance against them for not letting him use a helmet that has shown to be less safe.

    2. If I am the NFL, I am taking this back to the Judge and going “Your Honor, there is a settlement based on the fact that players didn’t think we cared about their safety – a multi-billion dollar settlement in fact, and when we are doing testing and ban non-safe equipment they file grievances against us, how is this fair?”

Some of these players need help protecting them from themselves.

  8. The league should allow Brown to wear any helmet that he wants to wear, with one caveat:

The league should make Brown, and anyone else that wears non-approved helmets, sign a document that prohibits Brown from ever suing the NFL for head injuries.

  9. They took Larry Fitz and Tom Bradys helmets and you dont hear a word from them but Mr. Bigchest aka tenderfoot takes any opportunity to get his name out!
