Ravens trade Kaare Vedvik to Vikings

A Norwegian is heading to the Vikings.

Kaare Vedvik, the Ravens kicker and punter who has lit up the last two preseasons but had no realistic chance of unseating Justin Tucker on Baltimore’s roster, has been traded to Minnesota, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The Ravens will get a 2020 fifth-round draft pick from the Vikings in the deal.

Vedvik can both kick and punt, which means he could supplant either kicker Dan Bailey or punter Matt Wile in Minnesota. There is even a chance he could supplant both of them and handle both kicking and punting.

Baltimore had reportedly received calls from four teams about trading Vedvik. A fifth-round pick is more than most teams would be willing to give up for a kicker who has never played in a regular-season game, but Vedvik has done enough in the preseason that the Vikings wanted to get a jump on other teams that wanted him, and bring him in to camp.

  1. I’ve never seen this guy, hopefully he’s worth a draft pick!

I know they are not the same discipline, but in this era I’m a little surprised that there aren’t teams making the kicher/punter take double duty. I would think that specialized distinction is going to go away for most teams at some point.

  2. Interesting. Dude has a big leg and pretty accurate so it’s worth a shot. Not sure I’d put him in as K and Punter and risk injury though. I’d keep Bailey for now and let Vedvik punt and get rid of Wile. If Bailey struggles, then let Vedvik do both, or look for a punter at that time.

  3. Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Mike Webster, Rodney Harrison, Hardy Nickerson, Herschel Walker (remember him Vikes fans?): all NFL 5th round draft picks.

  4. Wile has exceeded expectations as the punter, so I expect he’ll stay on, while Bailey gets released. Hopefully this is the last PK the Vikings need for the next 15 years.

  5. That’s a pretty steep price for an unproven field goal kicker. He’s been very accurate but only in preseason games where there is far less pressure.

  6. I called it. Ask for a 4th, settle for whoever will give up a 5th. I don’t know anything about Wiles but I think Vedvik could potentially be better than Bailey for the Vikes who is no slouch himself. What ARod said probably makes the most sense at the moment.

  7. This is quite an interesting move and can be beneficial in multiple ways. I’m assuming the 5th round pick will be a comp pick, we’ll find out later. If he can do both kicking and punting then it frees up an extra roster spot for someone that otherwise would have been cut because there just wasn’t enough room. Plus assuming Bailey gets cut now his 2.5 million salary vanishes too for Vedvik’s MUCH cheaper number. And considering where the Vikings are cap wise from trying to keep all their players every dollar helps them right now.

  8. Ha! Dan Bailey is STILL being defended by Vikings brass despite being ineffective and they go and pull off this move. The Gong show continues in the Twin Cities!

  9. Great trade for Ravens and could turn out to be the same for Vikings – he looks effortless on kicks as the ball just jumps off his foot – his punts are boomers just needs to work on the finer points of punting – not sure any team is ready to trust one player with both but this guy could do it! Good Luck Kaare!

  10. The Vikings already showed they are willing to give a later round pick away when they traded two 6th rounders for Daniel Carlson who has been great for the Raiders. I hope the Norwegian is finally the answer.

  11. From what I heard Bailey was missing 1 out of every 5 kicks in camp, indicating that his accuracy hadn’t really improved from last season. Glad to see the Vikes continue to do all they can to improve the team, which is better than sitting back and watching team weaknesses without any action other than fretting and lip service.

  12. I guess early August field goals do mean something. To some people. For some reason.
Check out the comments on the article announcing Dan Bailey signed with the Vikings. The fans were so proud the world-class org outsmarted the NFL and had the 2nd best kicker ever! And was so smart to move on from there 5th round draft choice who was a bad kicker?

And yet here we are again. Can Moritz Boehringer be far behind?

If Spielman wants a 5th round pick he’ll find a way to get one.

  14. It will be interesting to see which guy Vedvik replaces, and I wonder if they know for sure yet. They’ll probably have a kicking and punting competition in camp, give him a chance in the preseason, and then decide where they want him. I wouldn’t be surprised if they cut Wile and kept Bailey for now. You want that veteran kicker if he can do the job. If not, they have an in-house replacement ready to go. This was a move made for the long term so they don’t need to be in a hurry to replace Bailey.

Case in point: This year. The Vikings traded their fifth round pick for Trevor Siemian last year, and when the dust settled, they drafted Cameron Smith in the fifth round. According to this guy, Cameron Smith must be destined to be the next Dick Butkus.

  16. Spielman will soon be on the phone with the Jets and Bears to see which will give up a pick for Dan Bailey.

Your point? I mean since Rodgers is considered the Best QB alive, will be in the NFL HOF with records most QB’s will never achieve, when did the World-Class Packers do anything to make their fans and share-holders feel proud while playing on the cheap. I understand the Vikings may have not won a Super Bowl yet, but I think I’d be more upset or less proud if I had Rodgers as my QB and never gave him a supporting cast to only make on Super Bowl appearence…

  18. If the Vikings play the Bears in primetime this year this guy will ball out, the Bears kicker who’ll choke, and there will be lots of HD shots of Nagy on the sideline. Makes for good tv

  19. I never heard of this guy but I am in awe of all you who know all about him. But I do know Bailey has been missing short to medium kicks from the right hashmark in camp like that was the goal. Short to medium kicks is what you usually wind up with when a drive stalks. We really can’t live with that. So if this is the right kicker ( fingers crossed) I am all for it. We lost a ton of players in free agency so we will have a few compensatory picks to work with so it seems like a good move to me. I would love to see the kicker situation settle down for a few years.

It’s always easier to be “more upset,” or “less proud” when you’ve never in your football watching life have had anything whatsoever happen, to legitimately know exactly what it feels like to have your team of choice participate in, and win, a SuperBowl.

Believe me, if the Vikings had just one……..they wouldn’t be upset and they’d be plenty proud. Our experience can tell you that. Your experience tells us nothing.

Being from Minnesota, I have plenty to be proud of. We have experienced many championships. Minneapolis Lakers 5 championships, Minnesota Gophers football 7 Championships, Minnesota Twins 2 Championships, Minnesota Gopher Hockey championships 5. The Vikings haven’t won the SB yet, but they will. But until then win or lose the Vikings have given my family and I some great Sundays.

  22. GREAT move by the Vikings. The last kicker the Ravens developed was traded to a doomed stadium and doing JUST fine ..Will Lutz. Vedvik will be a place kicker and trading a 5th round pick isn’t too much to give up. I feel John Harbaugh looks

  23. Comments from those Vikings fans who think one player will both kick and punt are simply delusional. It. Will. Never. Happen. There is no cap savings here, no “let’s choose which position” story. Learn the game. And…

And Laquon Treadwell was a first round pick while John Randle and Adam Theilen were undrafted. So what exactly is your point?

That’s terrific, except I was responding to a specific negative opinion about the Packers from a Viking fan, and how it’s relatable. The most I can say for you is attaboy.

Cribbage12, having Vedvik play both kicker and punter would add 1M in cap money to Minnesota this year. Learn the game. LOLOLOL

It’s always easier to be “more proud” when the football team you cheer for wins a super bowl if you have little else to be proud of I guess. I mean really, being “proud” of a team you only cheer for? Happy yes. Excited sure. Proud? Ladies and gentlemen I give you Packer fans.

You don’t usually trade a 5th-round pick for a punter, so the most likely scenario is that Vedvik will replace Bailey. Bailey’s cap hit is $1 million. Vedvik’s cap hit is $571,333. That seems like there would be cap savings there. #math

  29. The Bears wanted this guy bad but their moronic GM traded all their draft picks so they are screwed and their circus will continue.

  30. It was abundantly clear at training camp last week after watching Bailey miss back to back FG’s inside of 40 yards and quickly looking over to Zimmer and see him shake his head in disgust that something had to be done. The curse of MN kickers is still alive and well. Hopefully this guy cures it.

  31. Vedvick will be a great kicker for the next 10 years as long as Zimmerman doesn’t ‘coach him up’and stays out of his way. Harbaurgh knows the special teams game…Zimmerman doesn’t. Zimmerman is just a defensive coordinator but a poor head coach.

  32. I’m not saying that this will happen, or even that it would be a good idea…

But if Kaare were to be a better punter and kicker than what we have on the roster, that would free up a roster spot and further increase our cap savings.

We just cut Kevin McDermott – the long snapper and replaced him with one of our 7th round draft picks Austin Cuttings.

  33. Bailey was missing everything. None of the kickers available has a big of leg as Vedvik who can kick FG’s & Punt.

Bailey is gone. Good thing they did it now before it was too late.

  34. It was actually this guys career is over, he can’t make long kicks & misses every other FG attempt. Forbath is better than this dude.

So much for the Bears trading for this guy, another great Ryan Pace move/non-move

Ryan Pace has put together one of the best rosters in football and yet he’s widely considered to make bad moves. Sometimes the mass group think needs to stop and check the facts.

  37. Thats a nice trade by the Ravens, picking up a free mid 5th round pick for a guy who would probably have been cut.

  38. Most teams wont keep two kickers i guess the Vikings decided a 5th round pick was worth calling “dibs” on him so he couldn’t decline them and go some place else.

  39. And Vedvik shoots, Vedvik SCORES! Oh wait, we are talking football here! When I first heard Vedviks name I was trying to figure out why it sounded so familiar. I’m 98% Norwegian myself but that wasn’t it. Then it dawned on me…..Vedvik usually isn’t the type of name or combination of vowels you would find in football but it rings beautifully with hockey! Anyway, I’m concerned that this just might make our fairly bad kicking game worse but to me it’s worth the risk to at least see if he can help improve our special teams production in any way shape or form.
