Falcons trade tight end Eric Saubert to Patriots

The Patriots love bringing in tight ends, and they’ve added another.

Eric Saubert was traded from the Falcons to the Patriots today. The Falcons are getting only a conditional seventh-round pick, which likely means they were about to place Saubert on waivers, and the Patriots, who as Super Bowl champions are last in the NFL’s waiver order, were willing to give the Falcons something to get him before another team could.

The Falcons took Saubert out of Drake in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL draft. He has been more a blocker than a receiver and has just five catches for 48 yards through two NFL seasons. But he’s been a valuable special teams contributor and was second on the Falcons in special teams snaps last year, appearing on 66 percent of special teams plays.

In New England Saubert will compete for a roster spot in a tight end room that lost Rob Gronkowski and will be without Ben Watson while he serves a suspension in Weeks 1-4. Saubert may be able to make it on a team that likes to collect a lot of players at the position.

  1. Waste of a pick, but they have plenty so not really a big deal…
This late in the season for a guy to try to make the team seems like a long shot……perhaps LaCosse’s injury is worse than they thought at 1st…..

If more of a blocking TE, this may mean NE is not happy with Izzo. They have a boatload of TEs now.

Right now so many guys are excelling in camp that its hard trying to think who the cutdown casualties will be. Nice problem to have. But Izzo has been one that I have thought looked like he could be coming up short. Not that hes doing bad or anything, its just other guys have been doing better. The thing is, I was not sure if he needed backfilling if he is getting cut simply because others bring more value to the 53. But maybe if Lacrosse us hurt AND they dont see Izzo as an answer that might mean adding one more to the evaluation pool.

3 more 3 season games and a bunch of practices left to sort it.

  3. LaCosse is hurt, Kenricks is hurt, Watson will be out for the first 4, Izzo is still unproven. Makes sense to add a body, even if it’s just temporary.

  4. This kid is 6ft5 250+ he can run very athletic caught alot of passes in college had issues with drops but he can play when focused maybe top notch coaching will turn the light on for him.

  5. I think the Pats are looking for athletes at this stage anyway – to run block or buy Brady time for Harry deep, yet be mobile enough to screen for the zippy backs, rather than be full Gronk.
