Mike Tomlin: Urgency of now, not longevity, is my focus

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin signed a one-year contract extension last month that leaves him under contract in Pittsburgh through the 2021 season.

Tomlin has signed two-year extensions in the past, but said at the time he signed the deal that he wasn’t bothered by the change. Tomlin said he focuses “on the task at hand” rather than how long he’s under contract in the future.

In an interview with Peter King for Football Morning in America, Tomlin expanded on those thoughts as he heads into his 13th year as the Steelers head coach.

“I love the job,” Tomlin said. “I love the challenges it presents. The variables are ever-changing. It’s continually stimulating. In terms of longevity, I don’t think a lot about longevity. I just like to feel the urgency of now. You do that enough, and you win enough, and you get longevity. Longevity has never been my focus. I just want to be a really good football team here in 2019.”

The talk of the offseason in Pittsburgh has been a return to calm normalcy around the team after the departures of Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown. Whether that leads to a return to the postseason will help determine just how much longevity Tomlin enjoys in his job.

Maybe his last year with the Steelers. They need to make the change. Tomlin is the anchor that prevents them from moving forward.

    ********************************************************************************

The only way it’s his last year is if he decides to leave on his own accord or the team torpedoes in a historically unprecedented manner. Neither is likely.

  2. I think the Antonio Brown saga in Oakland underlines how underrated as a coach Mike Tomlin is. You’d think having one of the top-10 all-time best winning percentages alone would do it, but keeping Mr. Big Chest a functional human being for all those years really drives the point home.

    Go Steelers!

  3. ONE MORE NAIL IN THA COFFIN…..when will tomlin get it????? Scariest words a coach can iterate. THA MAN HAS NO PLAN….itz get out on tha field and let’s see what happens. HERE’S ANOTHER BRILLIANT QUOTE:”you’re gonna learn alot”. REALLY??? And here I thought that off-season “training” was thea time to “learn”. tomlin is befuddled and he has spun a web that he is having a difficult time extricating himself from. A few weeks ago he said he was happy that the brown-bell saga was behind him….now he is saying that “longevity” isnt an issue??? REALLY????? THEN WHY KEEP TALKING ABOUT IT???? TOMLIN NEEDS AN INTERVENTION….BETTER YET, HAVE ROONEY HIRE TRUMP TO TEACH TOMLIN HOW TO WIN
