NFL will let Antonio Brown keep his helmet model, if he can find a newer one

The specific helmet Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown brought with him from Pittsburgh and wanted to wear this season in Oakland has been disallowed. But Brown may still get to wear the model of helmet he wants to wear.

PFT has confirmed with a source close to the situation that the NFL, the Raiders and Brown’s representatives have been in contact, and that the NFL has approved Brown wearing the helmet model he wants — the Schutt AiR Advantage — if he finds a helmet that fits him and is less than 10 years old.

Schutt stopped making the AiR Advantage in 2011, and Brown’s helmet is more than 10 years old. But there are AiR Advantage helmets out there that are eight or nine years old, and if Brown can find one that fits him properly and is in good condition, the league will let him wear it, the source said.

Right now, the source said, Brown and his representatives have not found an AiR Advantage helmet that is less than 10 years old. But they’re hoping to. Anyone who has one may be able to get a pretty penny from Brown for it.

  1. I would cover kickoffs and punts with no helmet for three thousand a game x 16 games = $48,000.00 a year ,,,,,,,call me !

  2. That’s a fair compromise……and don’t be surprised if some that still has the molds starts up a small custom helmet business. For the right price, Brown is just self-centered enough, to pay whatever it takes…..maybe even the price of putting somebody in business.

I think the NFL should have insisted he wear the new helmet during training camp until his old/new one is ready.

  3. 3 thousand a game that could potentially be 12 -15 K a month for 4-5 days work a month ,,Iam in we can call it the NHFL ,,NO HELMET FOOTBALL LEAGUE ,,and I guarantee there will be less head trauma for the owners and players to deal with !

  4. Given that he couldn’t figure out how to get the grass cut at his house in Pittsburg, I don’t have high hopes on him finding a new helmet.

  5. So basically the NFL will let him abide by the rules, shocker. As luck would have it I have an autographed 2011 model. My asking price is: There’s no amount of money.

  6. The rules regarding helmets have been in place for quite some time. If the helmet was so important, he should have bought some before they quit making them and/under 10 years old.

It probably never occurred to him that he wouldn’t be able to clown his way into getting his way.

What a joke….a sad pathetic joke.
    —————————————

Why the rules allow him to do this. So he’s playing by the rules isn’t that what you folks wanted him to do?

  9. The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round, the wheels on the bus go round and round, all day long….

The horn on the bus goes beep beep beep…
The babies on the bus go wah, wah, wah…
The mommies on the bus go shush, shush, shush…
The Grudens on the bus go why oh me, why oh me, why oh me….

WHY DO YOU CARE AT ALL? Are you the Raiders’ owner? If not, this has zero affect in your life. ZERO.

Maybe he’s one of the thousands of superstitious athletes that only feel comfortable with old stuff. Like Michael Jordan wearing his North Carolina practice shorts under his Bulls shorts EVERY GAME. Or Serena Williams wearing the SAME UNWASHED pair of socks during a winning streak.

  11. This could apply to Brady too. I’m betting if his old helmet was not specifically prohibited, he could easily find one manufactured after 2009. Hell, the one he just retired is probably less than 2 years old.

  12. Hey AB – I have your helmet made in 2011. You can have it for free although you need to know that for the last 5 years several of us have been using it as a piss bucket and chewing tobacco spittoon in my deer stand.

  13. Anyone not named Antonio Brown would (and probably did) spend time in the offseason choosing a new model and getting used to it. The idiocy going on here is staggering but, as a Chiefs fan, I’m loving it!

  14. All of you are poons. Let him play with a leather helmet. With no helmet. At his consent. Why would you care about someone’s safety you dislike? Why would you care if someone is ignorant enough to take a knee during the national anthem. Half you are fans of the drama not the game

  15. Really sure what the problem is, they are allowing him to play with a helmet is within their own rules. He didn’t bend them browns wishes. They told him he can’t play with his is too old if you can find a new That’s OK, not really sure why that’s a problem he will be playing with a helmet with in the NFL guidelines. He is still an idiot for this whole thing, but the NFL didn’t bend to Antonio Brown.

  16. Makes no sense. Let him wear it or don’t. It’s his head. He could find an 8 year old model that’s more beat up than his 10 year old. Sounds like he won and the NFL saved face by acting like they told him no knowing he’s already got the 8 year old model at home.

  17. I have one. 13 million. Or this loudmouth can just retire like he threatened. Either way he doesn’t seem to care about 13 million. Right big chest?

  18. I tried to tell y’all this was all for marketing. You know damn well they still have the mold/machines to make these helmets. They will whip him up a dozen or so for this season… and then feed the media some ridiculous story about how there was one single helmet left that belonged to a dying Steelers fan that moved to Antarctica when Brown was traded to the Raiders because that was his favorite player… but if Brown promises to score three touchdowns in his first game than that fan can die in peace…

  19. I for one, hope he never finds an “old” helmet. He is so not special. If he never plays again or makes one dime from the NFL I could not possibly care less (I take that back, it might actually make me happy). But I have to give him credit. He is getting, by FAR, the most coverage on PFT. Being a complete and total tool has its perks!

You’re just mad because you’re so dead inside you can’t fake tears.

    Waaaaaaahh.

  21. just think, if you happen to have one of these helmets that happens to be his size. you are holding a winning lottery ticket.

  22. That is a king solomon type decision. LOL They know that the particular model is no longer made. Hasn’t been made for 10 years. How can he find a new one before the season starts?

  23. This was obvious when it came out that his helmet was simply too old and not a banned model. Find a 2010 or 2011 and I guess we can do this again in a year or two. Part of me still kinda wonders if this whole thing is more about not wanting to be in camp than his helmet.

  24. The good news is, if he finds a helmet that’s eight or nine years old, we get to go through this nonsense in another year or two…
There’s a reason good teams don’t deal with this type of crazy.

  25. AB is making such a mess out of this. I mean, the NFL bans things all the time just for PR’s sake (remember the “unsafe” facemasks? Justin Tuck got a “medical clearance” to wear his), but if you retire over a helmet I think we’re all calling your bluff on that one.

At least we can put this crazy business behind us. At least the Raiders didn’t give up that much for Brown. If he can give them 1000 yards and 5-8 TDs, maybe all this idiocy and diva-ish behavior can be productive. Not what I’d prefer on my team, but at least Brown would give them something worth this headache (that no one ever really believed would happen, anyway).

  26. So in reality Brown actually won his grievance.

I doubt that is the way it will be represented, but he got what wanted.

Plenty of trouble with this player, but every small thing does also get exaggerated.

  27. not one loser commenting on this thread ever caught 100 passes for 6 straight years, as a matter of fact NO PLAYER besides AB has ever done that so I can see why using that helmet means a lot to him but of course none of these unathletic keyboard warriors will ever understand

I don’t know…..fans cry every day about Tom Brady and yet he is still here

  29. My Company is switching our ERP Systems. I do not like the new one! This has inspired me to write a letter to the CEO and let him know that if I can’t use the old one I will quit.
Now I am currently looking for a job because I was fired…

  30. Are helmets all so different from each other that a guy can’t find a new helmet that’s almost exactly like his old one that he likes? Really? Something tells me this is just a guy being a tool for the sake of rebellion.

  31. My car is 8 years old and Uber still wouldn’t let me be a driver because it’s a pile of rust. AB’s helmet situation should be no different. Wear the new one.

  32. Absolutely ridiculous that the NFL and the Raiders continue to allow this foolish man to act in this manner. It makes a joke of the damn system in place. All involved in able this behavior. Why? Because he has talent! He has no sense of professionalism, no respect for anyone or anything other than what benefits AB. He doesn’t give a damn about the team he plays for, just his statistics. Real sports fans HAVE NO LOVE FOR AB. He is everything that is wrong with the current NFL . Wish he would have stayed away!

  33. Lolz all over ebay these helmets have undergone sudden price increase of 1000 times what they were.

  34. Classic NFL reporters. OMG IF AB DOESNT GET HIS HELMET HE’S GOING TO RETIRE!!!!!11!1!!

    *NFL declines*

    “Yeah I’ll be at camp”

  35. Car seats are no good after so many years but Antonio Brown can find a 10 yr old helmet out the trash can and wear it.
