Tom Brady still plans to play to 45

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is, at age 42, the oldest non-kicker in the NFL. But he doesn’t think this will be his last season. Or his next to last. Or his next to next to last.

Asked today on WEEI if he still plans to play until he’s 45 years old, Brady answered, “Yeah, I do. I certainly hope so.”

Brady said the only thing that could hold him back is if he’s unable to get his body ready for a season, but he says his offseason routine is keeping him in great shape.

“It’s a big commitment and it’s a lot of time and energy I put into getting ready for practice, post-practice treatment,” Brady said. “The mental part of the game is not the challenge. It’s just really working hard to keep my body in physical preparation, physical shape. I’m not a robot. It’s a lot of time and energy to prepare myself and my body to play. I love doing that, and I think that’s why I’ve been very fortunate to play as long as I have.”

Brady, who said no one should read anything into the fact that he and his wife are selling their New England house, said that when he does retire, he may get into the real estate market.

“Maybe I’ll be an architect or designer because I love building houses,” Brady said.

But that post-football career is years away.

  1. Hes so modest hes in great shape looks mid 30s could play till hes 50. gorge Forman won the title at 44 jack lalane had some legendary feats into his 70s brady isnt done !

  2. That works out perfect…. Stidham gets to be mentored his entire rookie contract by the GOAT, learn the playbook, keep pushing the GOAT to perform at a high level & work on & perfect his mechanics so to be ready to step in when Tom calls it a career…..
& God forbid, be there to step in& carry the team should the GOAT get hurt at any time during his 3 additional years playing for the Patriots.
IT ALL SOUNDS OUTSTADING TO ME!!!!!

  3. Don’t understand why everyone thinks this is amazing. You can’t hit qbs. You can only have so many practices. It gets too hot you have to stop practicing. Defenders gets a flag if their hand grazes the helmet. Brady should be able to play until his mid fifties.

I’d be fine with that….. you, probably not so much

  5. Good for him, just hope he hangs the cleats up in his prime on his own accord and not after putting on a poor performance. Then again, he is the most protected QB in the league so he rarely gets touched.
Plus he knows the dink and dunk play better than anyone.
I have no problem with him playing still. It will however hurt the Patriots in the long run because they have not been able to groom a replacement that stuck around.

You seem to know a lot about what it takes to play quarterback in the NFL, especially on articles about the Patriots and Tom Brady. I have to wonder why we don’t see a whole bunch of 45 year old quarterbacks out there every Sunday. BTW, what team did you play for?

  7. Don’t understand why everyone thinks this is amazing.

It is not only his age.

It is his consistent greatness. Other QBs have has great seasons.

The goat has been great for 20 years.

    And counting.

  8. It is sad to see this speculated so seriously just because his house is for sale. Is there a better division for him to get to the playoffs.

  9. so its the best. brady is looking younger every year he plays, and hes year to year. so seems to me the direction this is headed, as shown this year, is that brady will be paid whats left to spare cap wise every year as a bonus. so he will get his just due for pay and allow the pats to be cap compliant. it really cant be any better to be a patriots fan right now.

  10. I feel like everyone should put their Patriots hate aside, and just marvel at Brady. The guy is the definition of living legend. We are likely to never see what he has done repeated. More QBs should take his route of taking less too have a better team. Brady is always the most relevant QB. Meanwhile guys like Stafford and Rodgers rather break the bank and sit at home come January. We all want guys who do it for the love of the game and want to win above all else. Unless you go Tom Brady route, your not about winning . All these guys have more than enough money but Brady will trade a few million to have a fist full of rings.

  11. Hate him all you want….many reasons to. Bottom line is that he is the greatest Quarterback of our time. He is a legendary player that we still get to see win Super Bowls. Tom is the best of the best and plays the jerk like no other. Easy to hate him but Ive always thought its his motivation to have people hate him.

Has anybody else done it? No. That’s why it’s amazing

He will however for ANOTHER team. ☺

    ……………….

Boston let Babe Ruth go and was cursed.

Indy let Peyton Manning go and was cursed.

No way Brady takes a snap from another team.

  14. Only Brady is allowed to play past the cliff. He and Manning played the same type of SB and they couldn’t wait to ship Manning out of town.

  15. I wish him all of the best but like any other NFL player he is one injury away from ending it all.

  16. “Maybe I’ll be an architect or designer because I love building houses,” Brady said.

Come on Brady, you’re already putting every PFT Commentor to shame. Next time answer, “Maybe I’ll sit on the couch, drink beer, and get fat as I love to do nothing.”

Yeah, thats why all QBs do it. Oh wait.

  18. Shady Brady should just take it 1 year at a time instead of being mr perfect saying he can go until 45, i think a lot of defensive players will be licking their chops when they have a chance to hammer him hard and finish him off.

Exactly. If Brady were playing in the 80s and 90s then I would be impressed but since he’s one of the most protected players in the NFL it’s meh.

That’s why lots of quarterbacks play and win Super Bowls at his age.

    Oh wait 🙂

Not a Patriots or Brady hater, but I find Brady very annoying and wish he would just go away.
    ————-
that’s pretty close to the definition of hater

  22. I think Tom will make it to 45 the way he played last year. He isn’t dropping off like Drew Bress has. Now others QB’s will try to play until they 45 too. Even though they aren’t Tom Brady.
Also I feel if Tom wants to play until he is 45 Robert Kraft is going to let him too.

Well, he ACTUALLY IS taking it one year at a time as his current contract is set up….. it voids after this year & IF he’s feeling good & playing at a high level & wishes to play again next year he’ll redo a new contract that PROBABLY AGAIN be on a year to year basis….. Brady has said it himself, he’s in uncharted territory & will take it a year at a time even though his GOAL is to play to 45…..my guess is he does & will retire a Patriot just in time for Jarett Stidham to step in as his rookie contract expires…..
ALSO, Brady’s release is so fast those defenders that are licking their chops will have to keep dreaming about finishing him off….

  24. Today seems to be a great day to release the PSI measurements from 2015 that the league supposedly collected after Deflategate. 🙂

    What say you Roger?

  25. DeMarcus Ware: Patriots QB Tom Brady is one of the “5 toughest players I ever faced”

“The way to beat Tom Brady is to hit him. As many times as you can, hit him. And even then, it might not be enough. In the AFC Championship Game a couple of years ago, we sacked Tom four times and we hit him 20 times.

    “Twenty times.

“The thing was, every time we hit him, he got back up. We hit Tom more times than any quarterback had been hit in any game that season, and he still had his team a two-point conversion away from tying the game late in the fourth quarter. The dude is relentless.

“Everybody knows what Tom Brady can do with the football. He has great arm strength. He’s accurate. He throws a great deep ball.

“But he can also take a hit.

    “Like, 20 of them.”

Numerous other defensive players have made similar comments about hitting Brady.

But yeah, Brady is still playing because he’s “protected” SMH

  26. Still not even halfway to catching the 13 time world champion Green Bay Packers

    Let’s put this in perspective.

How many years did it take them to win 13 Super Bowls?
